Our twins attended Joyful Horizons for their very first preschool experience, and even now, after…read moremoving to Northern California, we find ourselves reflecting on how fortunate we were to have found it. I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to for this phenomenal school--I know this is a long review, but there are simply too many good things to say.
There is something truly special about the smallness of this school--the intimacy, the gentleness, and the way each child is so fully seen and held. For our children, who were sensitive and not yet accustomed to being in a group setting, it was the most perfect introduction to school. It felt less like a program and more like a warm, carefully held community.
From the very beginning, Joyce put us completely at ease. She shared photos and updates throughout each school day--especially in the early days--which allowed us to see our children settling in, playing, and connecting. That alone built so much trust and peace of mind.
The rhythm of the days is thoughtful and nourishing. Most of the time is spent outdoors, with a beautiful balance of independent play, creativity, and meaningful group experiences. Circle time was especially touching--our children would come home singing songs about peace, kindness, and caring for others. There is a quiet but powerful emphasis on compassion and mindfulness.
Learning unfolds organically and in a developmentally respectful way. The children are gently introduced to language through sounds and recognition, and each week they bring in objects that match what they are exploring. Books, storytelling, and reading time are woven naturally into the day, along with opportunities for parent involvement like "mystery reader."
What stood out most was how personalized everything felt. Joyce truly meets each child where they are. At our request, she and her assistant Bianca--both bilingual--spoke Spanish regularly with our children, which meant so much to our family. It was beautiful to see other children become curious and begin picking up Spanish as well.
Joyce brings incredible intention to everything she does. The seasons unfold in meaningful ways, with inclusive and thoughtful celebrations. It was especially sweet to see holidays like Diwali included. Birthdays are honored with such care--the "walking around the sun" ceremony is simple, beautiful, and deeply memorable. We didn't feel the need to host separate parties because the school celebrations were already so special.
There are also wonderful moments of community--outings like the pumpkin patch and a winter gathering and potluck. Joyce brought in a dance teacher weekly, and the children gave a joyful performance during the holiday celebration, which was truly special.
Joyce is also a true partner to parents. She is communicative and thoughtful in guiding families through different stages, including potty training. Pick-up times often became meaningful check-ins where she shared insights that helped us support our children at home.
Even the smallest details are handled with care. The children help prepare food together, and meals are wholesome and nourishing. One of our children can be particular with food, and we always felt supported in the way Joyce approached this--with patience and without pressure. Artwork is thoughtfully collected and returned in a way that lets you see your child's growth over time.
Her responsiveness as a caregiver is remarkable. When our son had a minor incident, she called us immediately so we could be involved right away. That level of transparency and care made us trust her completely.
And beyond all of this, there is simply so much love. Joyce and Bianca create an environment where children are safe, seen, and truly able to thrive.
Leaving was incredibly hard for us--we would have stayed as long as we possibly could.
Many families travel significant distances to attend--some driving 20 minutes or more, and even over an hour--because once they discover this place, they recognize what a rare gem it is. We were lucky to live nearby, but we would have driven much farther without hesitation.
You can feel that this is not just a profession for Joyce--it is truly her calling. The level of care, presence, and intention she brings is exceptional. She keeps the school small by choice, and that intimacy is part of what makes it so special.
For our children, this was not just a good first school--it was the right beginning. It was a truly foundational experience that gave them such a positive introduction to learning and community that now, even after our move, they are excited to begin school again.
This is truly a special and magical place, and we count our lucky stars for having found it.
