They have cigars, tobacco, chessboards, and cut hair in the back as well. I was inside, upstairs, drinking tea, reading a newspaper, and smoking a La Gloria Serie R on October 29, '03 when the famous solar flare occurred. I loved it when you could smoke upstairs and relax, study, or play chess. Paul is a class act and gentleman. Peretti near Boston Common, I went over to Harvard Square and checked out Leavitt & Peirce. The guys there were super friendly and helped me find a nice Peterson Sportsman, a 4th Generation hybrid pouch and some tobacco which I enjoyed. I stumbled into Leavitt and Peirce after a J.P. Licks ice cream coma (for those of you walking this area, you know what I mean). I originally entered the store just out of curiosity. They have so many knick knacks and "manly" items that I just needed to look around. Their items range from board games to lighters to cigars. By the time it was time to go, I purchased a cigar called "My Father" as a Father's Day gift. The woman helping me knew so much about the cigar selection and even offered to wrap my gift! So I stopped in here just to kill some time because I was selfishly ordering 5 burgers for the bunch of us at Mr. Bartley's right down the way. The variety of smokes is superior. If you like to roll your own, this is your place for sure. My favorite blend is Blonde Shag. Its so good it makes y headaches go away! Seriously. Those days are long past, and the factories are closed. They just don't make them any more. I called the shop. I spoke with Norris. I go into L&P a few times a week. Although, I rarely buy anything. I always skip right to the back and look in the self serve cigar box bin. For $1 you can take 1 wooden one (when they're there) and 50 cents for a cardboard one. I know, it is going to be a great night if I find a wooden one. I don't find one very often, but that makes it even more magical when I do. I'm not really sure why I started collecting them. I think I always plan to make jewelry boxes but I end up just putting change or papers in them. It could also be the feeling of finding a treasure, and paying for it on the honor code. It's a mini adventure. But I'd go into L&P even if they didn't have the boxes. I love the smell of the pipe tabacco, it reminds me of hugging my grandpa; the warm air that carries its scent to you as you grab the oversized pipe shaped doorknob is comforting. read more

This Harvard Square mainstay not only offers up a bevy of fine tobaccos and accoutrements, it also has some of the greatest customer service around. I purchased a lighter from Leavitt & Peirce a while back. When it suddenly stopped working, I brought it into the shop to have it looked at. Within minutes, the clerk had identified the problem and replaced the flint and spring at no cost. The lighter has worked like a charm ever since! The clerk also made it a point to tell me that I can bring in the lighter whenever and have the butane refilled free of charge. I only wish L&PT sold gasoline and groceries too, so I would never have to shop anywhere else. read more

Oh how I love this place. The boyfriend smokes a pipe on occasion, which makes gift-giving a hell of a lot easier than if he were into most other expensive, gentlemanly hobbies (big game hunting in Africa, sailing around the world in a balloon.) L+P is a classy-as-all-get-out little shop selling, among other things, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, hookahs and various accoutrement, shisha, games, chess sets, prints, wooden-handled umbrellas, and other things you would find in your great-grandfather's study. They also sell fantastic straight blades and razors, as well as various veddy Brrritish toiletries (in case you are stocking your great-grandfather's loo.) Staff is of the extremely nice hipster variety, knowledgeable and fun to chat with, slightly wary of anyone who is wearing a fanny pack and looking for silly lobster magnets, but give them a break. This store has a lot of character and personality. I love coming in and walking around, even when I don't need to pick anything up. They have a lot of old-school "man grooming supplies," like shaving cream with bar soap and a brush. They also have a variety of smoke supplies, like vape liquids, pipe and cigarette tobacco and papers, and cigars and cigar cutters. They also have some random things like chess boards. You can get an ounce of loose tobacco and some rolling papers here for less than $5, while a pack at the convenience store costs more than $11. Some people said in their reviews that prices tend to be expensive, while I thought prices were really great. I guess it depends on what you get. This would be a great place to buy a gift. I like the low-key, classy and sophisticated vibe, and that store associates are available and friendly without pressuring or hovering over anyone who is looking around. read more

I love Leavitt & Peirce. Well, sort of. I love that it exists. I don't smoke, but I love the full line of general gentlemanly refinement that they sell. Traditional wet shaving is a big hobby of mine, and Leavitt & Peirce carries some nice stuff. Specifically, they sell: Merkur safety razors (I love the 38C) Dovo straight razors Merkur blades (terrible) Feather blades (great, but too sharp for beginners) Trumper's soaps and creams (outstanding) Mitchell's Wool Fat soap (I hear it's very good) The problem is, their prices for this stuff are usually about 30% over what you'd find online if you shopped around. But here you can hold and sniff, and do it in a great environment with a semi-snooty sales person. So I buy some stuff there, because I don't ever want to see them go under. Colonial Drug (also in Harvard Square) has a much larger collection of soaps, creams, and colognes, so they're worth checking out, too. Also, make sure it's obvious you're not a tourist. I think a lot of Harvard Square tourists go in there thinking they'll find more cheap souvenirs and Harvard sweatshirts, and the shop owners are probably sick of having them come in and touch/smell everything with no intention to buy. This is a beautiful shop that we wandered into on a day trip to Boston during a teacher conference in Connecticut. We saw chess pieces in the window, and being chess teachers, we ventured in. We were charmed by the decor, the upstairs chess parlor, and the general ambiance of the place. The best thing about the shop, besides it's fabled history, is the delicious smell of pipe tobacco that permeates the place. Every flavor and variety imaginable were on display for sale. I must say I flashed back to my childhood, sitting in my grandparents' parlor, breathing in the delicious cherry-flavored smoke rings my Popo blew to entertain us. When we explained we were chess teachers, one of the clerks ran to the back and came back out and gave one of the teachers an old chess piece as a memento. I will never forget our visit, and would love to take a trip back to revisit. read more

I could wander up and down the counters for hours looking at all the different tobaccos, carved pipes, and mens cologne. It was priceless that I could take a whiff of Bay Rhum and be transported back to my Grandpa's lap. My Husband loves smoke shops and this one was fun to peruse. Although some of the prices on the cigars shocked me (hello, $138 for 1?) I know nothing of tobacco quality other than I used to smoke Marby red 100s and Djarums. I'm not an elitist obviously. They have added a small jewelry store in back that is FILLED with gorgeous semiprecious stones. The Amber case is especially well done with large signature rings. Leavitt & Peirce is a great smoke shop - I stop in every once in a while. They have a good selection of cigars - you can find major labels like Cohiba, Oliva, Nub here. I do wish they'd carry the Ken Kendall 7-20-4 line, however - but so few shops do. They have a great selection of pipe tobacco too - this is the only place I buy pipe tobacco, when I want it - which isn't that often - usually in the winter months I switch over to a pipe from cigars. Lots of other nifty things to see here including chess sets and other man-type gifts (but not pornography, which is a good thing.) My only two beefs with L&P is (a) I wish they were open later on weekday afternoons - my commute takes me through Harvard Square most days, but they are only open past 5pm on Thursdays and (b) cigars are pricey there - mostly because they charge the exorbitant Massachusetts tobacco death tax. But that's not the shop's fault. Service is superb, a must visit shop when you're in Harvard Square! read more

This is a very nice store that makes me want to intake more carcinogens. Helpful staff. One time I went in and asked for a good butane lighter. I said I was willing to pay anything. He showed me the $50 lighters. I asked, are they really better than the cheaper ones. He said, you know, this $10 lighter here is very nearly as good. He could have sold me on a more expensive lighter and didn't. I enjoy the cigars I've bought. I wish there were some sort of ratings or descriptions to go by. I honestly don't know just how high the tobacco quality is in this store, but the cigars they've sold me on seem flavorful. The pipe tobacco and pipes are so alluring. God darn those carcinogens, because if not for them I bet I'd be the dork walking the campus with my pipe. Besides tobacco and smoking accessories, the store is a delight to shop in for men. There are a handful of people in my life that appreciate cigars as gifts. Heck, even I will enjoy one every once in a while, but I admit that I know zero about them, other than if I like the particular stogie I am smoking at the time or not. Though there are a few other shops in the area that are possibly cheaper and more convenient, none of them measure up to L&PT when it comes to variety and customer service. Yes, their prices may be slightly inflated, but believe me, it is worth it. Every visit I have made over the years has been stellar. All I need to do is tell whoever is helping me what the giftee prefers, and the magic begins. They go beyond the typical suggestions for cigars and their bevy of accessories will get into the gory details about each cigar brand and type if you let them. The employees' enthusiasm for cigars would be an understatement. I simply cannot walk out of this store without dropping at least $50. Every time. I go in planning to pick up maybe 5 cigars and spend a couple of Jacksons, but then *POOF*, out I walk with a dozen cigars and $100 poorer. I'm not sure how they do it, but they do. While the reviewer before me says it best, I'll still make my humble praise of near-extinction type of a store. It's a piece of a bygone era, it's dark, it's old. It carries things that only few will find useful, and that is the delight of it. Stroll through, lift up the lids of the big loose tobacco jars and inhale pungent and sweet aromas. In the back of the store there is a small counter with cosmetics that would look more appropriate in a quaint antique store, but they are not 100 year old as thier merchandizing suggests. These soaps, colognes,pomades and body oils must have been packaged the same way for at least last half a century. Call me wierd, but that was so endearing it made my day! read more

this is such an exciting store! I really find this place to be a lot of fun with some really interesting chat-skis. If I ever become some sort of business tycoon, I'll furnish my apartment with the knick-knacks from Leavitt & Peirce, with my three piece suit, monocle and cane. When I used to smoke a pipe, I'd g to L & P to get my tobacco. Their signature blend, "Black & Gold" is really good and fairly priced. I give Levitt and Pierce four stars only because their prices on items other than tobacco are a little high, in my opinion. I went in looking for cigarette rolling tobacco and was very pleased. I would give them five stars for rolling tobacco. They have an excellent selection and excellent prices. I got an ounce of tobacco for about $5.20. The tobacco is excellent quality and tastes great. This is a great alternative to buying packs of cigarettes. I've calculated that I save about $3 on average per pack buying my own rolling tobacco. EDIT: I have now decided that Leavitt and Pierce deserves a full five stars. The more I visit the more I am pleased by this place. The people are always nice and helpful. Today, one employee even gave me some scotch tape to fix my debit card that was about snap in two. I didn't even ask! I always leave this place extremely satisfied with my purchases. I bought a torch lighter today and was told that if it ever breaks I can come back and they will replace it at no charge, and they refill them for free. With service like this, I can see this place being around for at least the next century. note...if you collect cigar boxes (as I do), go in after they open saturday or on sunday. Their head cigar person (excuse my lack of political correctness) comes in saturday morning to refill the cigar case and get rid of old cigar boxes. That's when their "box of boxes" is filled. Terrific Shop. Ive recently started to smoke a pipe and L&P offers a nice range of house blended tobaccos as well as useful reasonably priced accessories such as tampers, hydrostones, tobacco pouches and cleaners. The staff there are pleasent and helpful folks. ...and they offer some good advice for the novice.. (I.e. what is a hydrostone and what's its function.) I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, but as someone who has frequented all types of tobacco smoking (Cigar, Pipe, Hookah and cigarettes), I appreciate Leavitt & Peirce for being the bastion of decent Tobacconists in the Boston area. There are few actual Tobacco shops like this in Boston and it's nice to have a classy joint like this one around. But Leavitt & Peirce isn't simply a Tobacconist. It's more of a Gentleman's shop. Here you can find the Tobbaco staples previously mentioned but also classic board games, male hygenic things (cologne, shaving goods), and various other cool items. The atmosphere is awesome. It looks, feels, and smells like a Tobacconist from the earlier 1900s. The stuff they carry other than the tobacco has a decidedly old-school feel about it too. There are a few reasons this place doesn't get five stars. One is pricing. I don't hold it against them, seeing as though they're of a rare breed in the area - but some of their stuff is pretty steep in the price range. They do have some good deals, however - cheaper starter pipes are a great one, but I would've loved to see some lower level Hookahs for those not wanting to spend well over $100. The tobacco selection is good, especially if you're a pipe smoker. There seems to be a good range of Aromatic and English blends. Cigars have been somewhat hit-or-miss for me here, some very reasonably priced ones are quite enjoyable and others that I consider not as good are more expensive. The ONLY blatantly apparent shortcoming is smokeless tobacco. There is only one jar of chaw here, and it's apple flavored. As someone who has chewed too (both dip and chaw), I would love to see Leavitt & Peirce carry some good chewing tobaccos, maybe even some Snus. Leavitt & Peirce easily nets four stars, however. Price non-withstanding, it's a very slick place and enjoyable just to browse in. And if you enjoy tobacco of any type (minus those who enjoy smokeless), you'll probably find something to pick up. You just may have to search for a good deal, but searching Leavitt & Peirce store is half the fun. read more

A beautiful, well-maintained store, with old-fashioned delights. And reasonable prices. I came looking for a variety of cigars, to try a spectrum. At first I was skeptical that the young woman behind the counter would know much about cigars and tobacco, but she proved herself knowledgeable and friendly, even to a relative newcomer to cigars and to the store itself. So top ratings for quality of store and service! Things also not to be overlooked: a good selection of Caswell-Massey soaps, which have light, but less common scents, such as sandalwood. I am not a cigarette smoker, but I still love this place. It is one of the few places in Boston that has hookah supplies. For those of you who are not too familiar with hookah... hookah is an Arabic smoking device for tabacco. One may mistake it for opium smoking device if one is not too familiar with Arabic culture. Or mistake it for a bong. But this is totally legal, fear not. You need to purchase: Hookah (the pipe equipment itself) or it's also called Shisha Tabacco (comes in many fruit flavors) Charcoal Then you are all set.
