Was in town on honey moon and decided to stop in because there is nothing like them where I'm from and every time I tried to talk to the guy at the counter about my small collection he acted like he didn't care which I can ignore but the final straw was when my wife curiously asked him how long it takes him to make a pipe he replied with I can't really answer that it's actually a very irrelevant question. I put the 2 pipes I was gonna buy down and walked out and he lost out on a $350 sale. read more

About 5 or 6 years ago I stopped going into Peretti's due to a bad experience. Previous to this I had been in multiple times either with my Boyfriend or other male friends, they hadn't always had the best customer service but they'd never come off as hostile, rude, or put out by having people in the store. However this time when I came in alone the man behind the counter was rude, dismissive, and seemed really put out for me buying cigars from him. I would have left without buying anything but I wanted the Rocky Patels as a last minute addition to a gift. After my experience there I let my bf and our 6 cigar smoking buddies know of the experience, and we stopped going. However about a year ago a group of us were in the area for dinner and we decided we'd like a nice post dinner smoke, so we ventured in. We received a friendly greeting from the guy tending the shop ( I think his name is Bob ). He was helpful and made friendly small talk while we all browsed the cigars on offer. His customer service was what I would expect from a small specialty shop. Friendly and informative about his products, including lower priced items that turned out to be great. We all ended up buying more than just the single smoke we had each been loking for. We have returned since then multiple times and have had a great experience. I happily reccomend this shop to anyone looking for cigars or other tobbaco. read more

I was in Boston last week on my honeymoon when I realized I had not brought a pipe or tobacco with me. My wife thought a new pipe would be a great memento from the trip as it would make me think of our time there every time I used it. So, with such romantic notions in mind and gratitude in my heart for my wonderful wife, I found the nearest tobacconist and went in to enjoy the experience of purchasing a new pipe. Unfortunately, the tobacconist I found was L.J. Peretti. Their selection of pipes is merely "okay", but I found a nice Peterson I would be happy with. The customer service was one of the worst I've ever encountered. Every single step of the process was painful and the man behind the counter made it clear that every request I made resulted in a huge personal sacrifice on his part. I was purchasing a pipe, tobacco, pipe nail, lighter and tobacco pouch for a few hundred dollars. I ended up walking out and leaving it all on the counter because I was treated so poorly. Fortunately, I was able to hop on the T to Harvard Square and get what I needed from Leavitt & Peirce. Those guys were fantastic! read more

They are the best in the country. no surtax and surcharges, and when you order out of state, you get a bigger break. They ship all over the world. When I travel, I give them a call, and few days later, I get my stuff. If you are interested in rare cigars including Opus X, which they always carry, give them a call, and ask for Mike Murphy or Steve Smith for cigar suggestions. If you are interested in Pipes or estate pipes ask for Charles Norman or Steve Smith. By the way, Charles is the biggest collector of Castello Pipes in the US. All right, all right. Beggars can't be choosers. This really is like the ONLY tobacco shop around. I still think it's overpriced - you'll pay about $8 for a cigar found elsewhere for $6, or online for $4. But, if you're in a bind and need some quality smokes for the eve, (and can avoid anything moldy in tubes...) then you really have no choice but to go here. - Word of warning: They no longer give out wooden matches. This may matter to those of us who did not bring our own light! The do, however, give you a book of matches. But honestly, quality wooden ones ARE the way to go, wouldn't you agree? read more

Heads up! Google Maps and Waze will take you down a dead-end alley around the corner (Maybe it's their back door, but I was late and in a rush and didn't care to check). So be sure you drive around the corner to see the shop. The shop itself was great. I visited from out of town. They were very helpful and knowledgeable and showed me a cool pipe that wasn't yet out on display, but was along the lines of what I was asking for. I ended up with a new Peterson pipe to commemorate my trip to Boston, and a few ounces of one of their house blends. I couldn't be happier! Very impressive selection of pipes and tobacco. I am not sure if the boys at the shop had a bad day or what, but service was HORRID! This was my first time at the shop and I am definitely not coming back. If I am paying a premium to shop at a retail location, rather than online, I want service. I didn't get any. I asked for some matches, the guy just pointed at them, like I was some bum. Cigar selection is also not the best. Plus where the hell are real humidors? If I am paying extra for h.upmann or R&J, I want to walk into a humidor and pick them out. Having them behind the glass with a tin of water does not cut it. read more

They have enormous amounts of information that they are excited to share, and it's all reasonably priced. I used to go to LJ Peretti but now make the trek and the extra effort of going to Cambridge's Leavitt & Peirce Inc. Although they close a little earlier (when everyone gets out of work) Id rather deal with cursing at the 1 bus or the Red Line for not getting me there in time than dealing with LJ Peretti. Or for that matter go to Gloucester St. Cigars. Everyone there is super nice and really helpful. Just go in and ask anyone for help. Hell I don't even know if 1/2 the people work there, but just sit around playing backgammon and watching sports. Although the selection of cigars and pipes are decent enough at Peretti's , I feel like the guy that works there is inconvenienced when there's customers. Its like: "don't ask me any questions, just get what you want and leave immediately." I even went to school right around the corner a few years ago and would rather go elsewhere. The icing on the cake is the recent closings of Allston head shops. Boston police, before closing down The Joint, Green Side Up, and Wildside Gallery, went to LJ Peretti and were informed that there was "no legitimate purpose for non-conventional pipes such as glass or porcelain." That sounds more like someone has an axe to grind than anything else. Who cares what people smoke whatever they want out of? Whether its glass, steel, acrylic, brass, clay, wood, does it really matter? And where are hookahs on this list? Is one of the oldest methods of smoking also illegitimate? Because of this reason I now vow never to go to LJ Peretti's again. Join me in boycotting a store that seems to take pleasure in cutting down other businesses. read more

In the interest of full disclosure, after being a customer here for years, I took a part-time post here while grad studenting at MIT, and it was one of the better decisions I have made. Peretti's management is on a first-name basis with the world's reputable cigar manufacturers and distributors, from Carlitos Fuente right on down. While some of the employees can be gruff at times, all are extremely knowledgeable and all can steer you toward the best cigar for the price-range and flavor profile you're seeking. The pipe collection, too, is an area in which the LJ Peretti company truly shines. All of the best makers are represented, in a wide array of styles and shapes. If you are looking for a nice pipe in Boston, Peretti is definitely the place to go. The pipe tobacco is blended in the back room and shipped all over the world. The blends are created by the savvy pipe smokers and collectors who work at Peretti, to best highlight the strengths of the tobaccos they have sought out from around the globe. Bring a pipe in and they'll let you try before you buy, too! Definitely a must-visit if you're coming in from out of town, and a must-frequent if you're from the Boston area. read more

The best Tobacconist in Boston. Hands down. Leavitt and Peirce may be quaint, with their Teaberry gum and fancy chess sets, but their staff is young and (compared to Peretti's staff) inexperienced when it comes to Tobacco. Allow me to illustrate my point: As a new pipe smoker, I was interested in finding out as much as I could about different types of tobacco. At L&P, a young clerk (who was extremely pleasant to deal with) recommended one blend, saying "I don't smoke pipes, but I *love* the smell of that one!". The blend she recommended was a Cavendish style blend, the type of tobacco most pipe newbies try because they smell great -- until you light them! Over at Peretti's, owner Steven Willett set me straight and recommended I try a Burley blend and an English blend. Compared to the Cavendish, these smelled funky and spicy in the pouch, but when I smoked them, they were ten times better tasting than the Cavendish. Sweet, mild, cool and dry. I think I've smoked only one bowl of Cavendish since. Thank god for Peretti's. A note about the service: As a Boston landmark a mere crosswalk away from the Common, Peretti's gets LOTS of tourists. Many of these tourists ask inane question after inane question, not realizing that there are other customers waiting for a moment of the salesperson's time. Call me a grumpy Bostonian, but there have been times when I've wanted to smack an out-of-towner while waiting for my turn. I can only imagine how the staff feels after a long day in the middle of tourist season. If you live in the city, then don't go to Peretti's on a Saturday or Sunday. Visit them during the week, when the store will be less crowded and you'll be able to benefit from the extensive tobacco expertise of the staff. They are open until 8pm most evenings. read more

You can count on either a condesending additude or one that's just out and out arrogant. I believe that they do so much business that they really don't have to be super nice to their customers. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly/helpful. Their selection is amazing, and they recently got me into pipe smoking as well, and told me everything I need to know. I've gone out of state for cheaper cigars (NH and Delaware) and been very disappointed. I'd rather pay the extra tax for my tobacco here. If you are into pipes or cigar, go here. Fantastic selection of cigars not found in other retail shops. Also, the atmosphere here is unique. It sort of throws you back to the old days of stopping in for a smoke while going about the city. While some may complain about the demeanor of the ownership/staff, I have never experienced that and in fact they were very helpful when I interacted with them. I go in a couple times a year, because it's the convenient place to get pipe tobacco, but I always leave saying "next time I'll find a place that doesn't make me feel dumb." no experience with the cigars. the pipe tobacco selection is big, and probably good if you walk in knowing what to ask for. but it is NOT the place to go if you want to smell some tobaccos, ask 'if I like this kind, what else would you recommend?', or anything like that.
