Great coffee/sandwich shop. Until recently. Change of staff results in horrible service. Too busy at front counter chatting to take orders. Had to interrupt their conversation just to order lunch. Hello, I want to start by saying that Legal Grounds is one of our favorite coffee shops. My husband and I visit multiple times a week and have always enjoyed both the drinks and the atmosphere. Unfortunately, my last two visits were not positive experiences, and I wanted to share this feedback in hopes it helps improve future customer interactions. On my first visit, there was a misunderstanding about my order regarding whether it was made with espresso or not. I've never been asked that before, which caused some confusion. When I mentioned that the price was different from what I normally pay, I felt I was spoken to in a dismissive and rude way, as if I had done something wrong. After ordering, I also noticed the employee who took my order and the person making the drink looking at me and making comments, which was uncomfortable. Ultimately, the drink was made incorrectly. My most recent visit was on the morning of January 16, 2026, and involved the same person who took my order previously. To avoid confusion, I explained my order very clearly. When I walked up to the counter, she turned her back as if I wasn't standing there. After I placed my order, she still seemed not to understand it fully. Additionally, the barista who usually makes my drink -- and clearly recognizes me -- placed my drink at the front of the counter while I was standing at the back, even though he could see me clearly. Both employees' behavior felt passive-aggressive and unwelcoming. I genuinely enjoy your shop and would prefer not to leave negative feedback, but these experiences stood out and made me uncomfortable. I recently visited Legal Grounds and as a big food lover from California, I can say it was well worth the 30-minute detour that I took to try it. Loved to outdoor tent option and inside was nice. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the s'mores latte, which was recommended by the friendly staff. It was absolutely divine, with the perfect balance of sweetness and rich coffee flavor. I also had a delicious bagel that was fresh and perfectly toasted. Could've used more cream cheese lol This place is a gem, and I can't wait to come back on my next trip! What a nice little find. I was on my way to the airport and found LGC on Yelp and saw that it only had 22 reviews but an untouchable five star rating. I went the opposite direction of the airport to give this place a try and it paid off. I'm an iced coffee snob and would have loved to try LGC's but it was lunch time and I try to cut off my caffeine intake by lunch; I opted to try their food instead. I landed on the salmon avocado toast and it was "good enough to write about". I generally do not like smoked salmon, raw or rare is my speed, but I gave it a shot and what an great choice. The salmon tasted lightly smoked and it paired nicely with the avocado and red onions. The plate was served with a bag of chips too. I polished this plate of happiness off with one of LGC's pastries (apple caramel coffee cake) and OMG, I needed a cigarette after that (I don't smoke but hopefully you know what I mean, wink, wink). read more

The food is amazing and very well priced, the coffee very tasty and the staff is out of this world. We ordered and one of the servers walked out with us to disinfect the table we were going to sit at. They also give you complimentary fruit water, which was delicious. I was looking through the photos to get a gist of what the place is like and I notice they serve art coffee's. Honestly what more wonderful and amusing than that. Legal Grounds (LG) Café on Kirkwood Highway has parking in the rear on this busy thorough fare Boulevard. The barista made a nice Cortado for me, which is not on the menu. It is espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity, but not a latte; rather it is blended espresso and warm milk with no foam. LG serves New York style bagels from Manhattan Bagels in Wilmington. I had the everything bagel, but they also have pumpernickel which is sometimes hard to find. Definitely a good choice, however they are a little skinny on the cream cheese so if that's your jam, ask for extra. LGs espresso drinks are served in a tiny 3-4 ounce solo cup that is insulated with a fixed sleeve of corrugation paper on the outside, A nice feature for keeping your drink hot when you can't sit down with a warm ceramic cup. Beware that while the lid looks snappy on top, it does not seal at all, but simply rests on top of the cup. The barista warned me about this irregularity, however this is a liability waiting to happen as soon as someone does not get the warning or forgets, and turns a piping hot, little sippy cup onto their face. Overall LG is a clean, efficient establishment with careful preparation and delivery. They have outdoor seating because COVID regulations or the establishment --other cafés in Wilmington have indoor seating-- does not allow indoor seating during Covid. I will repeat my same COVID regulation gripe here. The risk of infection does not come from other patrons distanced by tables, but from inside any kitchen where food or beverage is prepared. This whole outdoor seating phenomenon advances a mythology of protection. All the while restaurants and cafés are constructing essentially new dining rooms in their parking lots and on the street, with the sanction of state and local regulators, a ridiculous fiasco. read more
