Frankie the night we brought him home

We adopted a young pup yesterday. The staff was wonderful! Most of the people I saw working there were young people but very knowledgeable and caring of the animals. The staff treated us so nice and answered all our questions. This shelter is very clean and organized. They have a beautiful outdoor play area for the dogs and plenty of room to walk them and get to know them. This is the 3rd dog we adopted from LVHumane Society. We will definitely go back

If I could give 0 stars I would!! 0/10 recommend. The dogs look very unhealthy and dirty. The manager was very rude!! His info is in the photo. The manager Joe stated I was antagonizing a dog by looking him in the eye because he was barking , when I never even looked at the dog. When asked if he could not assume and look back at the camera he said "this is my shelter I know my dogs now follow me to the front so y'all can get out". He also followed that by quoting he studies dogs for a living and doesn't care what the cameras presume.Which was extremely rude and disrespectful. He then proceeds to say he can be rude because he gets a "check" . Which had nothing to do with the topic at hand . Wouldn't recommend this place to anybody looking for a positive environment as you continue your search for a dog. A recommendation definitely should be made to send Jo Irizarry back to customer service training where he needs to evaluate how he approaches people as a "manager" because that interaction was unacceptable.

Yesterday was the last day that our group will ever take a cat to this Kill Shelter. 1 of the 4 cats brought in for TNR had an injured paw. They said that it was septic, bone exposed and called Carol Dos Santos (Aunt Helen's Cats In Need) who told them to euthanize it. The cat could have been saved. If antibiotics would not have worked, then the paw or leg could have been amputated.. There were other alternatives It is not right how quick they are to put these cats down. You can not call this place a No Kill Shelter. They claim to be going for a goal from 97% to 100% No kill. That is definitely not the case, especially when they are euthanizing ear tipped cats brought in by the Allentown Animal Control.

Brown stuff is diarrhea and there is a dog there.

Used to volunteer here and all I can say is that these bad reviews are right...they do euthanize for space. There have been as many as 13 dogs euthanized in an 8 day span. The new kennels are not good. The dogs have no space to move. They were short-staffed and the animals were not getting out to go to the bathroom on a regular basis. Just as of May, I found them lying in their pee and feces. Lying on blankets of filth, the water bowls empty, wrong food given...The worst thing is the dogs that are euthanized are usually not given a chance. They are usually only there for a month or two and the reasons for euthanizing often have nothing to do with any bites or human aggressiveness. It is a very bad situation and my heart goes out to all the animals that are there or even come through the doors because there is a good chance they will not leave alive. I do have evidence to back up everything I am sharing...I have two pictures below and I cut the dogs out for privacy, though they might have been euthanized. I have more evidence, but this is a prime example of everything...

We found a stray kitten with an infection his eyes. we asked if they would take him in to take care of him. they said no because they don't want to give it to the other cats. i thought they were a place to take care of sick strays also. they said they would put him down. they should rename themselves the Lehigh County Inhumane Society. pieces of crap. the kitten is doing better now since we are taking care of him. giving him to a family member for a home.

I'll start by saying I don't usually make reviews, but after this place made my partner cry I had…read moreto. We went in looking to adopt a bonded pair of cats after we lost the second of our dear cats we had for 14 and 17 years. Having lots of love to give and being great pet parents we didn't think that we would be talked down to, and made to feel ashamed for not taking our perfectly healthy cats to a vet yearly. Apparently we aren't suitable because we could be bringing cat diseases in on our shoes. I pretty much told the judgemental overseer of this organization she can keep her cats. We will go elsewhere to people that aren't high and mighty. For an organization that cares about animals, they might also need to work on their people skills. Or just send their ring leader to manners school.

We have only 3 paid managers, all of them very well qualified and professional. The rest of us are all volunteers, and all of us love the animals in our shelter and work hard to take care of their physical and emotional needs. We recently renovated our very old building, (the former Zimmerman's Market for long-term local residents), enabling us to provide even better care for our wards, and modernize our veterinary clinic. No matter how well we care for them, dogs especially become depressed and anxious the longer they remain in a shelter environment, so once/week I take a dog on an adventure to a local state park, giving them the best day of their lives. It's the best and most rewarding thing I've ever done, bar none. It provides them with the opportunity to just go out and be a dog, and gives their emotions a lift. If you are thinking of adopting a pet, please give one of our dogs, cats, bunnies or guinea pigs a look. As one of our posters says, "You won't change the world by adopting a shelter animal, but for that one animal their life will be changed forever". As a side note, we have thoroughly investigated the very negative review posted by Brett W, and no one at PK knows this person, and there was no cat euthanized at PK under these circumstances. We'd appreciate very much if Brett W would contact us to clarify our understanding.

There have been cats there who have lived there from kittenhood to death, 15+ years, never being adopted. While it's a nice shelter, some cats spend years in smaller rooms with limited space and stimulation. Even with dedicated care from staff, I believe long-term shelter housing is not an ideal quality of life compared to a permanent home. In my opinion, this highlights the need for a stronger focus on adoption outreach and placement effort. I think the shelter could really benefit from modernization. They need better advertising, social media presence, etc. They don't even have a Google page when you search for the shelter. This means that this massive shelter with hundreds of animals is largely unknown to the public. This, mixed with their strict (I would argue outdated) rules and overprotective staff, the vast majority of the animals will live and sadly die in the shelter. In other shelters, it's considered atrocious if an animal spends more than a year in the shelter- these places will post on social media to campaign, and the animal will immediately be adopted once people learn how long they've been in the shelter. Meanwhile at Animals in Distress, there have been animals living there for 10+ years. It's truly heartbreaking. Part of caring for animals, truly caring, is finding them homes and trusting people in the adoption process.
