After her drove 25 minutes to his appointment, they told him that he was OUT of network. The secretary said "Just pay for the exam and you can call your insurance and figure it out later". He was smart enough to call me first to see if this was appropriate. I asked to speak to the secretary that was talking to him. I heard her say that she was too busy. After another 10 minutes, another woman came to the phone and said that they "usually verify insurance 1-2 days before appointments, but we must have been too busy". I asked them to call the insurance to verify (they had just went on the website initially). 20 minutes later, they told my son that he was out of network, so I told him to cancel the insurance and we would find another optometry center. I called to make him an appointment at SVS. I asked them to verify In network insurance so that this would not happen to my son again. The secretary was very nice and agreed, but she saw that Village Vision Center had not released/cancelled his appointment yet, so she could not access his account/verify that he was due for an eye exam until they released the appointment. I had to call Village Vision back and tell them to release his appointment. The secretary said that they released it "as soon as he cancelled his appointment", which I know is not true as it took me at least 10-15 minutes to call the second optometry office.... Shame on them for NOT actually verifying his insurance when he called to make the appointment AND then trying to get him to pay upfront and imply that the insurance would pay for it if he just called them later!

When I called again, someone walked the message to the Vision office, and I received a call. My glasses had been there for over two weeks. I had not been notified because Vision was calling a phone number I had not had for over five years. No one asked if that number was the correct one to notify me. While the exam was professional, the clerical staff is not up to par. Someone should have updated my information at the time of the exam. No one asked me for phone numbers: not my cell or landline or even my email address for a contact.

I've been to eyequity multiple times to get glasses. All frames with single vision lenses are a…read moreflat cost, currently $139, which includes all of the coatings (no weird upcharges!). Thus is a better deal than you'd find at lenscrafters, or sterling optical, and comparable to what you'd find at Jcpenney or Sears optical. Unlike the cheaper department store options, however, Eyequity can make most single vision glasses in an hour if they have your lenses in stock. And, perhaps the best part of eyequity, is that they have an incredible selection of styles. Note that I said "styles" and not "brands and styles," as the reason eyequity is so inexpensive is that they don't stock top tier brands like Rayban. But if it looks the same, who cares? The lenses are perfect, and I have actually gone back to my doctor and have the glasses looked at and determined that the prescription was made perfectly (because it was a new script and I wasn't sure when it took me a while to adjust). Please do note, the opticians are friendly and helpful, but they are just opticians. You must visit a doctor first to get your prescription and then bring that to the desk. Also, I know there are a lot of online options for glasses like warby parker and zenni optical. These may save you a tiny bit on this stores flat rate. For me though, the convenience of trying on multiple colors and styles (I must have tried on 20 pairs of glasses as they kept pulling more out from behind the desk as we talked through my options) in person, rather than waiting and waiting to try something at home when I needed glasses right away, given the fair price at eyequity made sense. Finally, a little tip for UM employees with premiere care insurance, or anyone with an eye exam benefit in your medical insurance: you can go get your script from one of the weird doctors covered by your plan for free, then bring the script here to really save the most money. Seriously, it's a weird little kiosk, but I've verified the quality of my glasses, the employees are super helpful, and the style options rival (and I daresay exceed) what you might find at a place like See or Visionworks. Give it a shot!

Dr. Carder is an expert in how neurological conditions affect optometry. She did 2 days worth of testing on me to make sure she could recommend an accurate prescription. After seeing her, that's where things fell apart. I was recommended neurolens, and I asked about getting a tint or transitions. They said they would call the manufacturer and let me know, so i left without ordering the lens. Now the headache started. Me calling them. Waiting on hold. Realizing the person I need is at a different location. (They have locations in Saline and Chelsea.) Calling the other location. Waiting on hold. Leaving a message. Repeat. Repeat. Finally get a call back, and we cement my neurolense with transactions xtractive. But for some reason they can't order them that day? Don't worry, we will call you on Wed. Nope. And now I repeat the process. Anyway, I decided to go pick up my glasses without ordering the new prescription from them. That wasn't easy either (even though i called in advance), and the receptionist made me wait while she checked our other people instead of just handing me my glasses back.

These folks were great--happy to have found them. They are in the little strip mall on Stadium near Little Caesars--I never would have noticed them had my insurance company not sent me there. I told the person answering the phone who I was, my current lack of insurance and asked what they charged. She told me that if I was an AARP member I could get the exam for $59. I went ahead and joined AARP, went to my exam and when found out that I had cataracts. I knew that this was my situation as I was told that they were starting 3 years ago at my exam. All of this should have been in my chart as I was a long term patient. Went to check out and I wanted to process through the AARP. They insisted I needed to run it through my BCBS Medical deductible plan which I knew I would end up paying out of pocket as I had not met my deductible. Today I received the bill from them for $141.57 for the eye exam. When I called to discuss the situation, Karen in billing was not at all helpful, but she was rude and condescending. So much for shopping "local". I will be taking my money elsewhere.

They were also very pricey , even with insurance one pair of glasses was nearly $700. I doubt they will be in Chelsea for very long.
