I had been a happy customer for 7 years, although my time ended rather poorly. I had lost my delta insurance from covered CA without realizing it, and while I take full responsibility for that, the office knew in January and never told me until my cleaning in July. That is well below the level of competence that I expect from a dental clinic and I had hoped being a loyal customer would have let me know much earlier. Then I had broken a tooth and needed immediate care. When I told the front desk of my condition hoping they could at least guide me, they were incredibly rude and dismissive of me when I was in active dental pain trying to solve my problem. While I was able to solve my dental issue on my own, I was hoping they could have guided me better. The fact that he wasn't even willing to take a look as a professional courtesy or attempt to help really rubbed me the wrong way. Furthermore I do have criticism in the care. The first is the quality of cleanings performed by Leo Shin himself. On at least 2 occasions I noticed some staining remaining on my teeth that should have been removed. I came to Dr. Shin towards the start of last year to replace a crown that had broken. The original crown lasted about 9 years. It was $1200 with my insurance, fair enough. Upon installing it the first time, it broke when testing the bite. Unfortunate, but fine. It took an extra month to get another crown made and finally installed. That crown broke just last night while eating a soft chicken street taco. The best he can do? A $200 discount to replace it. This crown didn't even last a full year. I lived in Newport for 10 years and truly enjoyed visiting this office for cleanings and whitening. They also took a new mold in order for me to get a new retainer that I'd had long before being a patient here. That's understandable, as they cannot get the mold from a previous dental office, despite that being the most optimal option for my orthodontic care. Fast forward to now needing to replace this retainer I got from Dr. Shin: They did not keep record of my mold and are saying despite the fact that I've worn my retainer every single night, that I need to take a new mold for this new retainer. If my teeth shift at all between now and my appointment, why would I would to retain them in a new position versus the position they are supposed to be in? Dr. Shin doesn't care about my orthodontic care, but rather cares about extracting more money for a new mold. What kind of dental office doesn't keep patient records? After we asked them about this, they backtracked and said "it's actually just what we charge you for coming in". This is insurance FRAUD. They still charged us. Disappointing Experience: Inconsistent Pricing and non refundable down payment My recent visit to dr Leo clinic with my daughter for an Invisalign consultation left me with a mix of frustration and disappointment. Initially, we were optimistic about the prospect of getting her teeth aligned with Invisalign, but unfortunately, our experience was marred by inconsistent pricing practices. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and taken through the consultation process. Dr Leo assessed my daughter's dental needs thoroughly. However, our optimism quickly waned when the pricing discussion began. During the consultation, we were provided with a quote for the Invisalign treatment, which seemed reasonable and within our budget. Encouraged by the initial estimate, my daughter decided to proceed with the treatment and I made the down payment as requested. To our dismay, once the down payment was made and the Invisalign's arrived to their office, the receptionist informed us that the actual cost would be significantly higher than originally quoted. This sudden change in pricing caught us off guard and left us feeling misled and frustrated. Despite expressing our concerns, receptionist was unable to offer a satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy in pricing. We felt deceived and disappointed by the lack of transparency and professionalism displayed during the consultation process. We ended up going with an alternative provider for a much more affordable price. We did not get our down payment back. read more

BEWARE INSURANCE FRAUD! I have seen Dr. Shin on 2 occasions. Once in 2023 and again in 2024. The first time I paid what I was asked at their office and did not question it. That visit included an x-ray and general cleaning. The second time was just a cleaning and I was charged $98 at the office. I questioned it at the time because my insurance had told me I get one free ($0 charge) general cleaning once a year. But the office insisted I pay them $98. I always trusted my doctors and I didn't want to make a fuss, so like an idiot, I paid. I called my insurance afterwards and they told me that was not right. There should be no charge. I called the dentist's office and talked to the receptionist who said she would check with the dentist and call me back. I never got a call back. I called them back weeks later and asked for a copy of the invoice so I can send it to my insurance to prove a paid the $98. Instead, I got a strange, faint, almost unreadable attachment in an email with the "dental plan" itemizing some deep cleaning procedure. What was odd too was on the top of that "plan", the dentist's name and address is blacked out. I sent that to the insurance and of course they said that was not good enough to prove I paid since it is not an invoice. I called the dentist again and got "that's all we have" answer. There was no care or help in resolving the matter. I called my insurance again and this time I talked to a supervisor at Blueshield who conference called with me to the dentist office. Blueshield also noticed that the dentist has put in a claim to the insurance company to say they did provide general cleaning (NOT deep cleaning) and in fact, Blueshield has paid the dentist in full and there is a $0 co-pay on my part. This was all discussed on the 3-way conference call: with the insurance supervisor, me and the dentist receptionist on that conference call. The insurance supervisor specifically told the dentist receptionist they need to rectify this. The receptionist, once again, said there's nothing she can do but she will talk to the dentist and call me back. Once again, nothing, no call back. This went back and forth for months and nothing was resolved. Situation was escalated at Blueshield with someone in their fraud division, and they affirmed this is insurance fraud. To date, I have not heard any response from Dr. Shin's office. Oh, by the way, Blueshield looked into my 2023 service and that too was a scam. Blueshield records showed they made a claim which was also paid out and my share was $34, NOT $98 (another $98) that I was asked to pay at their office. So twice I was defrauded! I did talk to them about the 2023 situation as well, and same thing... not response. Just took my money and nothing came of it. Unbelievable they can get away with this! read more

The husband and I are extremely thrilled to find a dentist we can trust in Dr. Shin. We moved from the Bay Area two years ago and had yet to find a dentist we felt comfortable with. Everything from scheduling to getting my impromptu wisdom tooth pulled out went smoothly. We scheduled both our appointments for Monday morning and came in ten minutes early to complete our new patient forms. When we walked in we were greeted by Dr. Shin and Claudia. The reception area was clean, warm and inviting. I've taken numerous x-rays at dental offices and this was the first time where it was no fuss and did not take a lot of time and discomfort to get done. Claudia was attentive and gentle with x-rays, assisting Dr. Shin and finishing off my cleaning. Dr. Shin is very personable yet he gets to the point. Cleaning was a breeze, no pain and fast. I've had a wisdom tooth that for some reason didn't come out with the other three, so though we did not plan it - I got my last and final wisdom tooth pulled out! Hooray! It took him less than five minutes to pull it out, the numbing took longer :) No more annoying gap that gets food stuck in it. What I like the most is that in no way did he make me feel like my dental health was in dire need of more work. No crazy up-sell or recommendations to some specialist. Had an amazing experience with Dr. Shin's office. They had me in and out of the office in 40 minutes. Google maps routed me to the wrong place and the dental hygienist who answered the phone was kind enough to text me their dropped pin and help me with directions. X-rays were easy and quick, took less than 5 minutes. Dr. Shin cleaned my teeth using a water pick, no scraping, which I appreciated. Everyone was super kind and efficient. I came here for a regular cleaning. I don't have any issues with my teeth. They were not able to offer me a routine dental cleaning (scaling + polishing) covered by my insurance. Instead, they wanted to charge me $90 for that. I've tried to clarify this with the frontdesk lady and she never gave a clear answer to why that happened. I was not able to talk to Leo either for a follow-up request I had, and I have tried several times. I really don't know if this dentist is good or bad as a dentist, because I only received a super-quick polishing made by the front desk lady, which of course did not clean the tartar on my teeth. OUTSTANDING, 5 STARS!!!!! On a scale from 1 - 10 and 10 being the best, I would give Dr. Shin and his staff an 11!!!!! I've have had some dental issues which unfortunately was in part created by several dentists. They kept having me come back for more and more services which did not correct my dental problems, however they were very eager to charge me with ridiculous fees for their mistakes and my dental work still wasn't corrected. My initial consultation with him was so refreshingly great! When I walked in for my appointment, his office was clean and Covid safe. Erika and the receptionist, which I apologize as I don't remember her name, greeted me with such kindness and respect. I arrived a little early as I thought I may have to wait as most dental offices; not here. I was seen immediately by Erika who took x-rays and then was introduced and greeted by Dr. Shin who examined my teeth. He shared his evaluations and gave me recommendations to remedy my teeth issues. He was very caring, very thorough, very knowledgeable and very compassionate in making sure that I understood everything that my dental phases would entail. He did NOT high pressure, sell or up-sell any additional services. He was truly dedicated to my immediate dental needs to make sure they get corrected. We talked about insurance and he said not to worry, Erika would reach out to my insurance company and let me know what the costs would be ahead of any procedure. For me, it was a breath of fresh air. Erika was so kind and very knowledgeable. She explained how insurance companies work, she gave me outstanding recommendations and made it so easy to understand my out of pocket expense.
