    Good eats!
    Mark S.

We stumbled upon LEONG"S ROAD HOUSE after arriving at our Hotel on the Eastern shores of Kauai a little too early for check in. Needing to burn a little time, we decided to, "Holoholo" (Hawaiian word for, "doing a little exploring on foot to see what is what") . , . LEONG's is located just-adjacent to the our hotels location, so our Holoholo had barely begun when we took our first pit-stop. How lucky we were to have our foot-journey bring us here. LEONG's hits the trifecta: The food was fantastic, the service was gracious and welcoming, and the ambiance was just-about perfect for someone seeking a little rest and relaxation in a "chill" environment. A cooling tropical breeze kept us comfortable as we sat near a large window that allowed us to sip our beverages and watch the tourists, covered in oil stroll on by. Being that we were only, "sort-of hungry"--and not famished (*and, as I said, kinda just needing a place to burn some time), we opted to share the combo plate (Hawaiian food that included laulau, kalua pork, lomi salmon, and classic sides of rice, sweet potato, and mac salad. ) It was fantastic! The portion size was easily enough for both of us, and at $27, it was not cheap, but it didn't make me feel "gouged" either. And, best of all, we discovered a new thing that is part of the island-food traditions... Despite returning to the islands numerous times since leaving it as a kid, I had, prior to this trip, never really "tuned-into" the use of chili water (aka: "Da Kine, Peppah wadah"). A cousin of mine brought it (the use of chili water) up in conversation the other day when we were talking about favorite foods and how to enjoy them. I now am aware that Pepper water is pretty-much ubiquitous to the way locals dine in Hawaii--and since talking about it, now realize that most dining establishments have them as condiment options. (Duh!--*that's me, mocking myself for not paying attention all these years) And to think... all this time, I had never tried it before. So anyways, I asked our server if they had any, and she immediately brought over a bottle (see photo below). We splashed a little of it onto the meats that were put before us...(dramatic pause)... and discovered that this peppah water takes everything to a new level. It is the perfect accompaniment to the proteins we were sharing, and I pretty much couldn't get enough of it. We finished our shared meal, chit-chatted with our server for a bit, and then went on our way to see what other magical things the islands would reveal. Upon reflection about the food that we had at LEONG's, I would say that it was already going to be one of the better "mixed plates of Hawaiian food" that has ever crossed my lips... but that elixir of vinegar, peppers, salt, and water, that we splashed on, boosted it up to "maybe the best I ever had" status.

Came here for our last dinner at the island with cousins. I really wanted to try their pork chops but they didn't have it that evening, so I settled for their fried chicken. Boy o' boy, I was pleasantly surprised with their chicken that didn't look appealing at all, but after that one bite I was hooked!!! It was boneless, crunchy, tender, juicy and tasty! I've never had this great tasting chicken before. It was a wonderful evening at the patio with live entertainment and the service is good. I am so bummed we didn't try this place out sooner. I would have kept coming back for more...

It's our 1st time at this new location since they moved. So we decided to come here for brunch. The place wasn't that b so So there was no wait to be seated. The place was nice!.Simple not overly decorated. After receiving our menu's n drink's we places our order. My girl friend got the Big boy Hawaiian plate.Unfortunately They ran out of chicken long rice but was substituted with beef stew.As for myself I had the Locomoco with a side order Mac salad. So My girlfriend enjoyed her meal. The Kalua pig had like a Smokey flavor the poke n lomi salmon jus made everything that taste that good. The beef stew was also delicious.Good flavor the beef was tender. My Locomoco really good!.Beef Pattie was thick, seasoned well n not dry.The gravy was tasty perfect saltiness and mixed with the over easy eggs and the Mac salad that's what you call YUUMMM OOO!!.Mean!.Can't wait to go back.Next time I'll maybe try the Kalbi rib's?.Or the fish Katsu?,Chili pepper chicken all sounds good..Also the waitress was very nice, and attentive. We had a good time..

The restaurant only had enough customers to fill a few tables, and we now understand why: the staff didn't even acknowledge our presence for the first 15 minutes, and it took another 15 minutes to get seated in a more-or-less empty restaurant. We finally got to order where the waiter was really nice in letting us know right away that they were out of desserts and romaine lettuce (so no house or Caesar salad). After ordering, the waiter came back after another 20-minutes to apologetically let us know that they were also out of ahi tuna. By then, we were all too hungry and too tired to care, so we just voided that part of the order; however, it would've been much better if the kitchen staff kept the wait staff informed of their inventory so they would've known much earlier. The food was actually pretty good (except their mac salad, which is not even close compared to other nearby restaurants), and the building was spacious, visually pleasing, and clean / neat. Unfortunately, it took another 35-minutes after the waiter cleared the plates off of our table to get the check for us to pay and finally leave. They just don't interact with their customers enough to turnover tables. Another couple that came in behind us stated that the restaurant has had issues recently with the staff greeting customers at entry to the point many potential customers just leave rather than staying to eat. We almost did the same. So, except for their mac salad, it seems that the food is good enough where they'd likely have a more consistent customer base if they worked on staffing and/or process efficiency.

I can't remember exactly which poke varieties we got, but I believe one was their shoyu poke and the other was a spicy ahi. Regardless, everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. This is exactly the kind of mom-and-pop spot I love finding while traveling. No frills, just friendly people serving great food at reasonable prices. The poke was fresh, the karaage was flavorful, and the lau lau was tender and comforting. The staff was welcoming, the portions were generous, and the prices were fair, especially considering the quality of the food. There are plenty of places to eat on Kauai, but spots like this are what make a trip memorable. We'll definitely be back the next time we're on the island.

It's definitely a local favorite due to its generous portions, authentic Hawaiian cuisine and friendly service. We ordered the fried chicken and poke combo with wonton chips and the ahi katsu (my absolute fav). The ahi was fried to perfection- crispy on the outside while rare and tender on the inside. The sauce on the katsu was absolutely fire!!! So good! Macaroni salad was creamy and delicious. And the rice was perfect. Obviously, you cannot visit Hawaii without having some of their poke- always fresh and delightfully tasty. The marinade was savory and packed with flavor.

Its right off a main road and you cannot miss it. Parking lot was a bit small, but there was plenty of parking. AMBIANCE: When I went there was plenty of seating. A bit dead, but I also did go pretty early. There were a bunch of decor of older American pop culture like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, etc. But also Hawaiian themed decor (obviously). SERVICE: You gotta walk up to the front to order. I was approached almost immediately as soon as I walked up to the menu on the screen. The girl working was super friendly and welcoming. I made my order and she gave me a pager for when my food was ready. FOOD: I ordered the chili pepper chicken, which was recommended from the girl at the counter. My friend ordered the ahi katsu. The chili pepper chicken was good! It was crispy and extremely flavorful. It was slightly too salty for my taste, but luckily the rice does help balance it out. Some of the crispness was sacrificed for the sauce, but it was overall still pretty crispy. I loved that they used boneless chicken thigh. I was expecting bones or lots of breading but it actually had a perfect ratio. I wasn't much a fan of the mac salad. It was like a mix of mac and potato salad, but more like a potato salad. I'm not big on potato salad, so that makes sense. My friend's ahi katsu was alright in my opinion. The sauce that's on it was good and enjoyed all the flavors. The tuna was just a bit overcooked to my liking, but idk how else one would make a katsu without overlooking it too much. Maybe bread the fish and freeze it before frying? Idk man, I'm not a chef lol but the tuna would definitely be better if it was less cooked. OVERALL: Honestly, I would still come here again. I still enjoyed the meal and the service was pretty quick. Both items were both worth trying. All the flavors were there and the little things I didn't like were just personal preferences. Its a great place to pick up a lunch plate and enjoy it at the beach.

Apparently, that welcome only extends to families whose children fit a certain mold. Not every child can eat restaurant food. Not every family wants to publicly disclose their child's personal challenges to satisfy a hostess. A little compassion, discretion, and common sense would have gone a long way. It was the first time we saw this truck, so we both couldn't help but be curious about the goods.. especially my wife lol. First off, the owner was super cool! Being that my wife is from Louisiana, every time we hit up a soul food spot, she asks where they're from. Today, we learned that the Moore's family is from Florida and have been in Hawaii since the 80's. Since we already had an early lunch, we weren't tryna get too crazy on the ordering as I typically do. My wife decided to try the chicken wing plate which came with 10pc chicken wings and fries. After debating on the flavor choice, we agreed on chipotle mango. When the owner hand delivered the plate to us, she asked for our honest review... and here it is!! Haha! FIVE STARS! :) Happy to report the wings and fries were amazing!!! Loved the homemade sauce that the wings were tossed in. I was expecting a little kick after catching a scent of hot sauce, but they weren't spicy at all. I appreciate the naked wings too btw. We went on a Saturday around lunchtime and it wasn't too busy. There is a small parking lot near the restaurant on the left hand side. It was filled when we first got there, but we were luckily able to get a spot. I could see this lot filling up quickly during other meal rush hours, so do take note if you plan on driving. The ordering is done like your typical poke place, you tell the service worker what you would like and there's a small toppings bar at the end before the cashier. There was a small line when we went, and even with the line, it still only took about 5-10 minutes to get our food. There isn't interior seating in the restaurant though, you will have to get your food take out, or just eat in the parking lot. I got the 3 scoops of poke option for $15.25, and I think that this is a pretty solid deal for the variety of fish that you can try out! I think based on my personal experience on Kaua'i, it will be difficult to get food, especially poke at a reasonable price. But for this price, it's probably the best place on the island to get poke without paying $20+ for the same variety. The fish tasted fresh, and I am a fan of the selection of toppings they had.
