Every time we're in Kauai, always dine at Eating once or twice. Fantastic food, service and views. We had reservations which are highly recommended. Request a table near the windows for a sunset view. We arrived and were greeted and seated immediately. Shortly afterwards we were served complementary spicy edamame. We ordered three appetizers to share. Brussel Sprouts & Cauliflower, Black Garlic & Yuzu Ahi Tartar and Vietnamese Style Sashimi. The Brussel Sprouts & Cauliflower was excellent, golden raisins and pine nuts add sweetness and texture, balsamic vinegar counters with wonderful acid contrast. The Black Garlic & Yuzu Ahi Tartar is simply fabulous, one of the best bites I have ever had. I first had this dish two years ago when it was introduced as a new dish in a prefix meal. On that trip we returned to enjoy the dish once again. Had it again last year as I travel to Kauai each year. I'm happy to see it is still on the menu! Our third dish was the Vietnamese Style Sashimi and it was okay, although a bit underwhelming for Eating House standards. It was fresh but lack the complexity that I have grown to expect from this restaurant. We requested some wasabi and it helped with the flavors. My thinking is the jalapeño oil should have been more concentrated or pronounced. To be clear I did not complain, regardless the dish was removed from our bill. Very nice. Thank you. It was great to know that there was an elevator to bring us up to the level of the restaurant. After a terrible experience at another restaurant, it gave me the idea to call and see if they had an elevator near by. The front desk staff guided me to the elevator. This trip was for my birthday. In every reservation when asked about a special occasion, I put birthday. This was the first restaurant to acknowledge my special day. The check-in staff wished me well as did the server. We had been to several restaurants prior to Eating House that didn't say a word. Kudos to the staff for its kindness. The restaurant is open air and very comfortable. It has a rustic feel. We were seated by the window on a cool, rainy night but were perfectly dry the whole evening. On top of that, our server was very helpful in guiding us to order the right amount of food. He brought us a serving of edamame which is always on the house. The shrimp & pork potstickers were very good. I had the ramen which was tasty, filling and a great choice. Our server was terrific to put the spicy oil on the side which made it easier for me to eat. My husband had the butterfish which is the best I have ever tasted. It is a signature dish and always a pleaser. The only real downside is the limited menu. We were told that because of a staff shortage, it wasn't the typical menu. This was disappointing. But they did have the best of the Roy's dishes. So far, it has been the best experience that we have had in Poipu. read more

My family and I went here for dinner and the waiter was great! He was very thorough explaining all of the dishes. Unfortunately, the pastry chef was not there that night but there is a great ice cream shop near by! This restaurant is great for hosting large parties as there were several including our own. I ordered the spicy ramen. I have a lower tolerance for spicy food but thought this was pretty mild. It's a 4/10 on the spice scale. It was so good and the serving size was very large, I would definitely order again!! read more

On the second floor of the same town you will undoubtedly pass by in your time on the southside of Kauai is the child of Roy Yamaguchi, a Japanese Chef who has brought a refresh light to a lot of Hawaiian inspired cuisine. We had reservations for a part of 10, and our server Dante (from Baldwin Park!) was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, and provided a lot of guidance in how we should order. Everything was pretty amazing, although the Paella being sold out was a let down. The Gyoza was ironically enough, what they were famous for, and they were definitely delicious. Chefs across the island have talked about their Gyoza, and we all chuckled...but it's true, its their Gyoza! The Rib eye steak and Butterfish were my favorite dishes. Both cooked to perfection with burst-in-your-mouth flavor. I would recommend these to share. Drinks were also very good. I had the flight to get a taste of what I enjoyed, then ordered a pint of that. The Ube Mule was very good. Overall we enjoyed out dinner here, and would reccomend you try this place at least once to get a taste of Roy's food. However, its pretty pricey, and for me, probably a "special occasion" type of restaurant. read more

Probably our favorite dinner during my vacation. We've been to the other location in Waikiki and this doesn't disappoint. Our server was so bubbly and friendly and made us felt so welcomed. It did make it for a very pleasant evening for sure. It's minimally decorated which suited us fine and we sat by the glass window overlooking the kitchen and waved our hand to their pastry/dessert chef. It wasn't loud and seemed the spacing was good for conversation. Their two hot pot rice dishes (fish and pork) were great. The fish was a bit better imo. The pot is very hot and the food runner should have mentioned this though. It was hot! Reminded me sort like dol sot bibambop But elevated. Kids menu that was on the menu was fish and chips and they ran out. We got the short rib kids meal for my girl and she devoured it. But the price was $22 which I wish the server told us. I rarely leave reviews like this, but I felt this experience was worth sharing because it happened before I even got to the restaurant. I called to make a change to my reservation because of a legitimate personal situation. I completely understand that restaurants have cancellation policies, and I wasn't asking them to ignore the policy. I was simply hoping for a little understanding and a conversation about what could be done. Instead, I was met with a very rude and dismissive attitude. The conversation felt cold from the beginning, and every response came back to the cancellation fees and what I would have to pay. At no point did I feel like anyone was interested in understanding my situation or trying to help. I left the call feeling like collecting the fee was more important than taking care of a customer. For me, hospitality starts the moment someone answers the phone, not when the food arrives. That one conversation completely changed how I felt about the restaurant, and I honestly wasn't looking forward to dining there anymore. Kauai has so many outstanding restaurants that make you feel welcome from the very first interaction. If customer service is important to you, I'd encourage you to keep that in mind before making a reservation here. I hope management reads this because I don't think the cancellation policy is the problem. It's how customers are spoken to when life happens. We had so many people recommend Eating House 1849 that we had to try it during our trip and it did not disappoint! It's conveniently located in the Shops at Kukuiʻula, which makes it fun to wander around if you're waiting for your table. We made a reservation and were seated pretty quickly. Both the food and drink menus are fantastic. We started with the potstickers and edamame, then shared the butterfish and ramen for our main. Everything was so delicious! We also loved seeing Margerum Rosé on the menu, a local Santa Barbara wine from where we live. The service was excellent and it is such a cute establishment with great views. Ambiance - large, spacious family style restaurant. Many were celebrating their birthdays. Service - our server was very good. I did not even notice when they refilled our glass. It was quite often. She was cheerful and attentive. Food - we ordered ube maitai, pork ribs and roasted cauliflower/broccoli/brussel sprouts appetizer, prime rib and chocolate/peanut butter soufflé and coffee for dessert. Oh my gosh! Absolutely loved the food here! The potstickers, steak tataki, Cesar salad and the butterfish all stand out as favorites. The flavors are incredible, food is fresh and comes out decently quick. The service was good and fast as mentioned, we enjoyed our experience overall! This is definitely a great option for a solid meal and the overall vibe of the restaurant is energetic and upscale. The burger was also super unique with the poi bun, a fun thing to try but I would recommend splitting with 2-3 people as a taster, probably wouldn't make that my main dish (it's rich, but delicious). This was by far the best meal we had on the whole island. It is definitely worth the cost. I had the ube-be mule and it was unlike anything I have ever tried before. It was so delicious. My husband loved the tropical elixir cocktail. I wish I was hungry enough to eat everything on the menu. It all sounded so good. Our waiter was great and helped us get some of the highlights. I loved how everything had a unique Hawaiian flare to its flavor profile. It did not taste like food you could easily get anywhere else. Everything tasted so fresh and you can tell every ingredient was chosen with care. The short ribs were so flavorful and had a unique taste to the sauce. They also fell right off the bone. The pork and shrimp potstickers were also very worth getting. They are known for their butterfish and it was amazing. We did it in the hot pot rice bowl and it was delicious and large enough to share. We also had the pineapple upside down cake (not something I would usually get) but it also did not disappoint. I'd say the food here is pretty average -- not bad, but definitely nothing special. What really disappointed us was the wait time. After finishing our appetizer, we waited about 45 minutes and our two entrees still hadn't arrived. At that point, we were already considering leaving. The food finally came out, but honestly we had completely lost our appetite by then. The manager came over to explain, but instead of apologizing, he gave a lot of excuses about how busy they were and how the food takes time since it's not processed. It didn't feel very sincere. On the positive side, our server was great -- very polite and did apologize for the delay, which we appreciated. Overall, the experience didn't really match the expectations. We went here for our Christmas family dinner this year. Eating House 1849 offers a higher-end dining experience, with some flavorful takes on mostly standard Asian-Western fusion dishes. The quality of execution was professional, even if the ingredients, plating and portions were lack-lustre and short on originality and balance. The atmosphere is a bit stiff for Kauai, in my opinion. The narrow bar was completely overcrowded with grumpy campers when we arrived; there was no way to get a drink while we waited - and worse, no refreshments were offered - just a seat on a hard bench. The restaurant was nearly empty, but they were strict about not seating us until our reservation time. Low on aloha, this Christmas, I guess. The cocktails were ok, in line with the quality, flavor and originality of the food. Solid, professionally mixed and consistent, but nothing exceptional or unusual. Service was mostly very good, but somewhat distracted, especially at the end of the meal. It took some time for them to check back with us after we had completed our main course, and beverages needed replenishing but we were never asked if we wanted refills. Odd. Perhaps these misgivings seem petty, but more is expected when you're dropping a large amount of money for a special, fine dining experience. This was not an inexpensive meal - but nor was it very memorable. I was a little sad as we left, feeling less like a welcomed guest and valued, sated customer, and more like a tolerated tourist being relieved of excess funds. It happens in Hawai'i, sometimes. Eating House offers poor value for the price tag. If you're in the mood to drop Benjamins on an epic dinner - maybe look elsewhere, for now. Or: just grab some solid grindage at Da Crack, and some cold local brew, and smile! read more

Nonetheless it didn't disappoint- the butterfish was as delectable as usual; the new to us crab and corn fritters were excellent, and the lava cake was fantastic as was the flourless chocolate preparation they made for my bride's bday. We came to Eating House 1849 for a special occasion and were seated by a window with a gorgeous sunset view--such a beautiful start to the evening. The food was excellent. My favorite was a crispy-skin fish (can't remember the exact type) served with soba noodles--absolutely magical. The butterfish was also delicious, though for $50, the portion of rice in the "rice bowl" was surprisingly small--maybe two tablespoons at the bottom of the bowl. The chicken bowl was very good as well. Service, however, was a bit hit or miss. I often had to look around for our server just to get a water refill. Toward the end, she dropped off the dessert menu and mentioned that the pineapple upside-down cake (and one other dessert) required a 25-minute prep time if we wanted it--but then she didn't return for 20 minutes, so we never got to order. Loved the waitress warm greeting. Loved my pineapple martini, pork belly hot pot. I was missing Korean food and the flavors flavors of our dishes met my cravings. Great experience while visiting Kauai! Favorites: The seared ahi and the potstickers, but everything was good. The service is attentive and the restaurant has great views. It is up a set of stairs so just keep that in mind if you have less mobile folks in the group. We had a reservation but they had what looked like a pretty good outdoor bar/dinner scene where folks could be seated with no reservation. This is one of my favorite spots to have ramen! Had it for the first time 7 years ago and I'm still in love. Eating House has a fantastic menu and nice open seating, but we did make a reso beforehand. I already knew I was going to get the ramen, but we decided to get two appetizers too. The blue crab and corn fritters were okay - I wish there was less bonito flakes/less ingredients to really let the crab and corn shine. The potstickers were yummy! The star of the show of course was the ramen, which came in a huge bowl (enough for me to take home for later too). I asked for extra chili oil to make it more spicy, which brought it to the perfect level for me. Plenty of pork belly, shrimp, and ground pork and other delicious toppings. Excellent water service, waitress checked on us a few times, but we ordered dessert sufficiently in advance (20 minutes notice required) and still waited probably double that to get it. Took a little bit of time to get our food order in too. But they had a nice birthday treat for my dad's birthday and overall it was a great meal. Really glad we came here for dinner. The food was really good and hit the spot. The Brussels sprouts and cauliflower was very good, simple but had good flavor. There is a tanginess in the sauce but it's not overpowering. Overall I was still able to appreciate the flavor of the vegetables, it wasn't lost in sauce. The butter fish is the best butterfish I've ever had. I first went to Roy's back in 2009 and have always gotten it whenever I go. I was so happy to have it again. It did not disappoint. I like how this version was different from my prior experiences. My only critique is that it come with a little more rice. Still really loved it. It's sooo buttery. Our server, Donavin, was so nice and friendly and efficient. He was very attentive and we had a very nice experience.
