On the second floor of the same town you will undoubtedly pass by in your time on the southside of Kauai is the child of Roy Yamaguchi, a Japanese Chef who has brought a refresh light to a lot of Hawaiian inspired cuisine. We had reservations for a part of 10, and our server Dante (from Baldwin Park!) was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, and provided a lot of guidance in how we should order. Everything was pretty amazing, although the Paella being sold out was a let down. The Gyoza was ironically enough, what they were famous for, and they were definitely delicious. Chefs across the island have talked about their Gyoza, and we all chuckled...but it's true, its their Gyoza! The Rib eye steak and Butterfish were my favorite dishes. Both cooked to perfection with burst-in-your-mouth flavor. I would recommend these to share. Drinks were also very good. I had the flight to get a taste of what I enjoyed, then ordered a pint of that. The Ube Mule was very good. Overall we enjoyed out dinner here, and would reccomend you try this place at least once to get a taste of Roy's food. However, its pretty pricey, and for me, probably a "special occasion" type of restaurant.

Roy is the fusion king! I enjoyed the views, company, food and drinks. I recommend getting a reservation before hand. Also, be sure to try the potstickers. They have a nice selection of tequila and wine so be sure to take your time in looking at the menu or bar. I was craving so I ordered the ramen bowl. It definitely hit the spot. Service was friendly and I liked the taste of everything.

Probably our favorite dinner during my vacation. We've been to the other location in Waikiki and this doesn't disappoint. Our server was so bubbly and friendly and made us felt so welcomed. It did make it for a very pleasant evening for sure. It's minimally decorated which suited us fine and we sat by the glass window overlooking the kitchen and waved our hand to their pastry/dessert chef. It wasn't loud and seemed the spacing was good for conversation. Their two hot pot rice dishes (fish and pork) were great. The fish was a bit better imo. The pot is very hot and the food runner should have mentioned this though. It was hot! Reminded me sort like dol sot bibambop But elevated. Kids menu that was on the menu was fish and chips and they ran out. We got the short rib kids meal for my girl and she devoured it. But the price was $22 which I wish the server told us. The highlight for any Roy's is their chocolate soufflé and man was this legit good! Great Asian fusion place to try!

We had so many people recommend Eating House 1849 that we had to try it during our trip and it did not disappoint! It's conveniently located in the Shops at Kukuiʻula, which makes it fun to wander around if you're waiting for your table. We made a reservation and were seated pretty quickly. Both the food and drink menus are fantastic. We started with the potstickers and edamame, then shared the butterfish and ramen for our main. Everything was so delicious! We also loved seeing Margerum Rosé on the menu, a local Santa Barbara wine from where we live. The service was excellent and it is such a cute establishment with great views. We'll definitely be coming back on our next trip. Highly recommend!

Ambiance - large, spacious family style restaurant. Many were celebrating their birthdays. Service - our server was very good. I did not even notice when they refilled our glass. It was quite often. She was cheerful and attentive. Food - we ordered ube maitai, pork ribs and roasted cauliflower/broccoli/brussel sprouts appetizer, prime rib and chocolate/peanut butter soufflé and coffee for dessert. Oh my gosh! Their servings are quite generous. Everything was super flavorful. The prime rib was so tender and perfectly medium rare. The pork ribs was very hoisin sauce forward which gave it an Asian kick. The soufflé was the only small serving. We could have eaten 10 of these. We left super full and satisfied. We kinda rolled out of there. Hehe.

This was by far the best meal we had on the whole island. It is definitely worth the cost. I had the ube-be mule and it was unlike anything I have ever tried before. It was so delicious. My husband loved the tropical elixir cocktail. I wish I was hungry enough to eat everything on the menu. It all sounded so good. Our waiter was great and helped us get some of the highlights. I loved how everything had a unique Hawaiian flare to its flavor profile. It did not taste like food you could easily get anywhere else. Everything tasted so fresh and you can tell every ingredient was chosen with care. The short ribs were so flavorful and had a unique taste to the sauce. They also fell right off the bone. The pork and shrimp potstickers were also very worth getting. They are known for their butterfish and it was amazing. We did it in the hot pot rice bowl and it was delicious and large enough to share. We also had the pineapple upside down cake (not something I would usually get) but it also did not disappoint. I highly recommend coming here! I wish we had time to go multiple times. If you want to sit by the water you need a reservation but we got in without one and had a view of the kitchen!

Absolutely loved the food here! The potstickers, steak tataki, Cesar salad and the butterfish all stand out as favorites. The flavors are incredible, food is fresh and comes out decently quick. The service was good and fast as mentioned, we enjoyed our experience overall! This is definitely a great option for a solid meal and the overall vibe of the restaurant is energetic and upscale. The burger was also super unique with the poi bun, a fun thing to try but I would recommend splitting with 2-3 people as a taster, probably wouldn't make that my main dish (it's rich, but delicious). I'd for sure come back here!

We've come here many times over the years Service wasn't as good as usual but food was nice, if you like flavorful! I loved my shrimp and scallops but the dry rub was way too spicy for me

3.5 stars Pretty standard upscale-type eatery. Nothing too special in my opinion. Think Roy's, but more casual.

Excellent service: friendly and honest recommendations--thanks Mikie! Superb food: intense flavors, well presented and generous portions. Ambiance: perfect view of the beach!!! Reasonably priced. Absolutely loved it! This place is a must-visit--unforgettable food and atmosphere. I'm already looking forward to coming back. Don't miss out!

I'd say the food here is pretty average -- not bad, but definitely nothing special. What really disappointed us was the wait time. After finishing our appetizer, we waited about 45 minutes and our two entrees still hadn't arrived. At that point, we were already considering leaving. The food finally came out, but honestly we had completely lost our appetite by then. The manager came over to explain, but instead of apologizing, he gave a lot of excuses about how busy they were and how the food takes time since it's not processed. It didn't feel very sincere. On the positive side, our server was great -- very polite and did apologize for the delay, which we appreciated. Overall, the experience didn't really match the expectations. Won't come again

Always solid food when we come, loved the potstickers, short rib and plantation paella. Shout-out to Ashley for being lovely and the entire crew for hustling on a busy night.

We came to Eating House 1849 for a special occasion and were seated by a window with a gorgeous sunset view--such a beautiful start to the evening. The food was excellent. My favorite was a crispy-skin fish (can't remember the exact type) served with soba noodles--absolutely magical. The butterfish was also delicious, though for $50, the portion of rice in the "rice bowl" was surprisingly small--maybe two tablespoons at the bottom of the bowl. The chicken bowl was very good as well. Service, however, was a bit hit or miss. I often had to look around for our server just to get a water refill. Toward the end, she dropped off the dessert menu and mentioned that the pineapple upside-down cake (and one other dessert) required a 25-minute prep time if we wanted it--but then she didn't return for 20 minutes, so we never got to order. Despite the service hiccups, the flavors were great, and overall it was still a good dining experience.

Ask the Community - Eating House 1849 Koloa

Are reservations required or do they still take walk ins?

Reservations are going to be required for a table unless you want to sit at the bar.

Can you order off the menu at the bar?

I have had a complete meal at the bar ordering from the dinner menu a few times. The bartenders were very accommodating.

Is there a corkage fee and much?

I have brought a bottle wine in to this restaurant about 3 years ago and there was a reasonable corkage fee at that time - $25-30. I would call the restaurant and ask about current practice.

    Do they require/take reservations?

They don't require reservations but if you don't make one at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance, you won't get in. This was true in late Spring. I'm not sure how far in advance you'll need to make a reservation now (Summer) with the heavy travel to HI.

Does the restaurant offer Happy hours?

Yes. But only for like an hour or two.

Are there gluten free options here?

Yes, there is steak, prawn piri piri and paella. I'm pretty sure there was some other fish dishes as well.

Did they close this location permanently?

It was open in February 2019 when we were there. Looking at their website it appears to be open.

The website has a lunch menu but the hours don't look like they're open for lunch. didn't see any of the "lunch" only items in the photos or mentioned in the reviews. whats the deal?

    I recall 4pm opening

    Any Vegan options?

Yes, and if you let your server know they are probably able to accommodate your needs more. They are a fantastic restaurant!

Do they have a keiki menu?

Yes. Kids also get a free quesadilla once you sit down (at least they did when we got there)

    Serve Butter fish?

The butter fish dish is probably their best dish they serve.

Sitting outdoors taking in the Kauaʻi landscape is top-tier. The menu itself is pretty limited. Here's what we tried: Papaya Salad: Really refreshing and tasty, though a bit steep on the price tag for what it is. Pork Belly Ramen: good but definitely not authentic-level ramen and at $30 (even with the added spicy miso sauce) it was just okay. I probably wouldn't order it again. Sesame/Ground Pork Soup (Hubs' order): He got a dish with ground pork and udon noodles in a sesame base broth, and that one was actually really delicious! Service was stellar! Our waiter, Keoni, was super attentive, friendly, and awesome overall. The ambience is very Hawaiian island style, not super upscale but very nice. Good place for a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. Our server was very prompt, kind, and informative. He also took the time to congratulate us on the anniversary. For an appetizer, we had the Crispy Hoisin Honey Pork Ribs- SO GOOD. The perfect amount of sweet and spicy. Crispy yet tender. Great way to open up. I started with the Makai mule, it was a good island take on a mule. For dinner, my wife had the prime rib with a side of coconut shrimp. It was served with mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts and was very good. For myself, I had the Fillet Steak Kiana, with a lobster tail. It was served with a side of mushroom risotto and brussels sprouts. All of it was good, but the lobster tail was great. The lobster tail was topped with a pesto sauce and it seemed like melted cheese. A surprisingly great combo. With the meal I enjoyed a couple of Mai Tai's, the local style. The Mai Tai was where it was at. Super good. For dessert, they brought us an original hula pie, on the house. It's freaking huge, and very good! It's the only thing I took a picture of.
