I was referred here by another mechanic to replace motor mounts and a rear main seal, because of an oil leak, on a 2007 GMC pickup truck. I already had the motor mounts that I purchased directly from the GMC dealership. Bad news for me, I did not know that they do not allow customers to bring the parts themselves. So I had to have that service done elsewhere. They replaced the rear main seal, and they also serviced the transmission. I felt they were fair in price. I wish they could have put the mounts in because I still have problems with the clunking sound when you shift out of Park. I will go there again as needed and recommend them for full sized pickups that are too much vehicle for some mechanic shops. read more

Leons will check out your car for free if you can leave it for a day or two. If they can not determine the problem from external observation or scan tool then they will call & ask permission to 'drop the transmission pan'. You pay $160 for this - which seems reasonable. BUT - what they don't tell you up front is it will be VERY rare to find a part that's simple or easy/accessible to replace on any transmission from just dropping the pan. If they do see a broken part or vague 'metal shavings' (all transmissions create 'metal shavings' & pans have built in magnets to catch them) and you tell them to "fix it" they tell you they have a policy of generally not replacing one or two obvious broken parts BECAUSE they can't guarantee the fix so you need to let them 'rebuild' your trans. So 'dropping your pan' is just a useless ruse to lock you into letting them 'rebuild' the transmission. All this made me very uncomfortable so I asked them to replace pan & fluid (covered under $160) so I could take my vehicle. This was the late morning after leaving vehicle with them for a day & a half. They were surprised I asked to take my vehicle and started trying to sell me on two levels of 'rebuilding' i.e. 'performance' or 'standard'. When I responded "I want my vehicle back" they told me they couldn't do the until the next morning. By the way - when I pressed and told them them that I didn't care about any guarantee and to just replace any broken parts they still refused and said while replacing the parts could 'possibly' work they wouldn't do it because their policy prohibits them. So I asked - "if you knew that you don't replace 'parts' what was the point of dropping the pan?!" - they just stood their fumbling their words. I asked what I would get in the way of work & parts in their 'rebuilt' transmission their answer was "it's too long a list of parts to tell me or print out". They also said that they will need vehicle for 2 weeks minimum while my trans was sent to their Gardena store to be rebuilt (I strongly suggest reading the 'few' bad reviews of this other location). If you have read this far you're now going to learn some very important information: Google "re-built" transmissions to see what mechanics think of them. Their consensus is if they last a year & a half you are lucky & that most trans shops have a similar pattern and technique to arrive at the same conclusion -"Let us 'rebuild' your transmission" after they drop the pan. DON'T DO IT. DON'T FALL FOR IT. *Secret: 'Re-built' transmissions are NOT the same thing as 'Re-MANUFACTURED' transmissions. Sketchy rebuilds only offer 90 days to 2 years depending on how much of a gamble they want to take. But a 're-manufactured' transmission is a whole other ball game giving you a 3 year UNLIMITED milage guarantee state to state nationwide. The remanufacturer actually backs up their warrantee (parts & labor because most of their biz is through mechanics so they have a vested interest in repeat biz). Where ever it breaks down they will pay a local shop to repair. Look at Jasper & ATK for a few (factory videos online). They only remanufacture they don't install and with Jasper it's all done in the USA at a state of the art facility with testing. I called back to Leon's Transmission to ask if they could just order a remanufactured one and install it instead of 'rebuilding' mine - I practically begged & said I would understand any up-charge - and they said "no way". I guess their profit must be pretty serious on their 're-builds' (hmmm). You do pay a bit more for a 're-manufactured' transmisson but the longevity is there because almost everything is replaced and testing is done in a huge clean factory with standards & machining facilities rather than the back room by who knows who. Most every mechanic and trans shop are able to order direct at discount from a 'remanufacturer'. And not only does your new re-manufactured transmission come ready to pop in with torque converter included (dyno tested too) - all the shops I called said it only takes 1 to 2 days max to install. Compare that with the 2 weeks or more for Leons to 're-build' mine. btw - Leon's was 3200 for their basic rebuild (more for their 'performance' re-build). I got a quote for a re-manufactured installed elsewhere for 3800 out the door. So I brought my vehicle to the other place to make sure their quote was correct, the guy test drives my vehicle & says he can do it for price quoted but that in his opinion he didn't think the slippage in my existing trans was all that bad and that if it were his vehicle he wouldn't worry about it and to just keep driving it as is (!). When we arrive back at his shop from the test drive he checks the fluid level (remember Leon's had to refill it) and he found it about 5 quarts too high (?!). I called back to Leon's furious as too much fluid can damage your transmission and they said "well, we, uh, just put back in what we took out". Yeah, right. read more

Literally, the day I picked up the car, it was JUMPING in idle and while stopped on the freeway and then the ENGINE light comes on. Their recourse? Take it to someone else to check the engine. Updating my review because not even 2 years later the same part has gone bad again... I've taken my car to another mechanic and he can't 100% confirm the TCM board was used but with his experience it should have lasted me 8-10 years and he pretty confident it was a used TCM board. I paid the price of a brand new and got a used one & a few weeks after the repairs from Leon I had a lot of rattling and loud shaking noise start. I didn't take it back because I've moved from the area and even if I hadn't I felt like maybe they weren't as great as I thought. I had great service and realistic repair times. I didn't realize that transmissions are so specialized, and complicated, and due to supply chain problems a wait for parts. The Leon's Glendale is close to my residence in Silverlake and was recommended to me by my friend who had his truck transmission done at the Leon's in Reseda (there are 8 other locations). When the work was done they gave me a 2-year warranty. Angelica the front office manager, and Ben the service manager were very friendly and approachable. Ben cautioned me to not miss the transmission flush and service they require after 10K miles of driving to remove any metal shavings from the new gears seating in to maintain the warranty. The manager was beyond rude. Not only could any Tech not figure out why my car had no drive or reverse, I got a call a day after Christmas to come get my car or there would be a storage fee. I will bring my car to a shop that has a clue on how to fix a transmission. I live 70 miles away from leon's and was planning to take the train back down to Glendale to pick up my car but the trains were not running due to Maintenance on the track. All I got back was I had to pick up my car that they didn't have the knowledge to fix but I better do it soon or I will be charged a storage fee. They did a complete and thorough inspection in the time frame they told me it would take. It turns out, I didn't have a transmission fluid leak, but they were able to spot the actual problem (nothing to do with the transmission) and explained it to me so I know what to tell the general mechanic. Very hurtful review - deception, dishonesty and lies... For 14 weeks I rented a car via Lyft for $230/week plus the required 20 rides a week. I also worked overnight in a residential concierge position FT, and I am a single mom of an emerging and busy performing artist. EXHAUSTING. Why do I tell you this? My 2013 Dodge Dart, which I was committed to repairing, after an over $3K high rate loan borrow and transmission replacement/repair at Aamco in Burbank (it) would not run, they said due to an oil leak (and claimed it ran fine after they cleaned up the spill, but that's a lie) but Gerard at Leon's said that it was because the new-to-me transmission that Aamco recently put in had a bad hydraulic pump on it. He even did a little teaching on the human heart and asked me what does the heart do...and further explained that that's what the pump does. Gerard further advised me that if I were his mother or sister that he would suggest that they not place another penny in that car. And that although it may be tough, to turn it in to the bank. TRUST ME He gained my trust because I was referred to him by my general mechanic and he tested the car for over a week and was very communicative, he kept me informed at every step. The conversations and professional recommendations seemed honest and sensible for the money I had already spent with Aamco (who would not honor the 90-day warranty, after the 90 days) and the fact that Gerard told me that I should return the car to the bank. Gerard further advised me to voluntarily turn the car back in to the lien holder and that he would conduct a lien sale and take the car off of my hands via auction, etc. SPILLING THE TEA After posting my review about Aamco, the owner Neil Evans reached out to me, via Yelp direct email and told me that he spoke to Gerard, and that Gerard told Mr. Evans that I just abandoned and/or gave up my car; and that he sent my car to another Leon's Transmission Services, where they have a general mechanic (which Gerard never shared with me) and that the general mechanic fixed the oil leak and they are now using my former car as a shop car to run errands. WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS... Gerard even spoke with my former lien holder and explained to them what was wrong with the car. According to him, they told him they didn't want the car; and that they [supposedly] said that they didn't know who the lien holder was. Since they never returned my calls and they actually called him, I believed it. Per Gerard's advice, I brought him the unsigned title so he could conduct the lien sale and I even received a note from DMV. Gerard told me that they had to go through with the lien sale now that the DMV was involved. He looked over my new used car, to make sure it was a good car; I cleaned out my old car and went on my way sad, for the major credit hits, but ready to start anew. BACK TO NEIL SPILLING THE TEA VIA EMAIL I was completely gobsmacked, when I read his email last night, tears just rolled down my face because Gerard informed me that the hydraulic pump on the transmission was bad - yes he said the oil was leaking but that was not why the car would not run. Honesty, respect and loyalty are very important values to me and although Gerard evaluates my car for nearly two weeks, he knew that I would follow his advice and he knew what his ulterior motive was. When Mr. Evans reaches out to him this week, he told him a completely different story than the professional advice that he pretended he would even give his mother or sister. When the DMV recently sent me a letter of pending suspension for the Dodge I called them and told them of the lien sale, of which they had no record. Once I was out of the picture, Gerard put his real plan in place. My car was very fixable, so fixable that they are using it now at another location for free. I unwittingly gave Leon's Transmission Service my car and they get to drive it Scott Free. Gerard deserves an Academy Award for best actor - seriously. He seems so sincere and helpful but please know he's got hustle all in his blood. Hurt, but still I rise. read more
