I had been looking forward to sampling Leopold's ice cream during our trip to Savannah, but one obstacle or another kept us from going to the main location in the city (it was either too early, or we had just ate and were full, or we had just had a sweet from somewhere else - I know, real first world problems!). So I resigned myself to not trying their items, at least on this trip. However, we got to the airport to fly home ridiculously early and as we were wandering around lo and behold look what was there! A tiny Leopold's! And the best part was that since we had gotten to the airport so early we had an hour before the location closed. I was thrilled. So I ordered a cup of Lemon custard. Now look, I have had amazing ice cream before. I have had frozen custard, I have had gelato, I have had some high quality stuff. But nothing prepared me for this dessert. It was silky, it was rich, it was buttery - it was sin in a cup for sure! I was so glad to have been able to get it before we left Savannah. Definitely going to make it a priority to go to the main location next time we are in town, you gotta try it! read more

It was awesome! It's a great place right there at the airport named for the namesake and famous ice cream in Savannah! We enjoyed upon landing and my wife got it for us while I was getting baggage claim just downstairs from the terminal and entry way to the airport. By the time she came downstairs with ice cream for all four is us - I had rented the car and had the bags and we walked out, ice cream in hand, to get our rental car! I've been trying to get into this landmark ice cream shop for a few years. I finally made it into Leopold's. On this day the line wasn't too long, so I hopped in line. One minute later there were about 15 people standing behind me. This brand was founded by three brothers a little over 100 years ago. Let's just say they know ice cream. When I landed at the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport, I immediately saw Leopold's Ice Cream and made a mental note to get this ice cream here on my way out if I don't make it to the original Leopold's location. Well, I sadly didn't make it to Leopold's in the historic district, but I was able to snag some at this airport location, and I'm so glad I didn't leave Savannah without tasting Leopold's Ice Cream. I scream for ice cream and heard Leopold's was the best ice cream in Savannah, so it was definitely on my bucket list. The ice cream was super creamy with a variety of ingredients for the different flavors. The signature flavor is the Savannah Socialite, which is dark and milk chocolate with Georgia pecans and bourbon caramel sauce, which is the one I ordered and absolutely loved! However, if you don't like chocolate, which is weird BTW, there are a variety of different flavors, as well as seasonal ones. There are also sundaes, cookie sandwiches, floats and merchandise. Just note that if you go to the Leopold's stand at the gates after TSA, the menu won't be as large and they won't serve as many flavors. It's best to get Leopold's at the central area at the airport for the full experience - other than the OG location, of course. Bottom line: don't leave Savannah without eating at Leopold's Ice Cream, even if it's at this airport location, which is basically a last call to eat Leopold's Ice Cream and be happy. read more

We knew there were a couple of Leopold's at SAV. One was before security and one post. The one past security is between Gates 9 & 10. That worked out as our departure gate was 11. The airport is very small so it would have been an easy walk irregardless. We went through TSA and headed toward our gate. We spotted the Leopold kiosk. Hubby and I each ordered a single scoop. Unlike Leopold's in Savannah proper, the single scoop was not very generous. Had we known we'd ordered two scoops for an extra dollar more. As it was we paid $13+ for two tiny cups. I was at the airport and right I'd grab a couple of scoops of Leopoldo awesome ice cream but was met with a stunningly uninterested cashier. I didn't even think anyone was there until I looked more closely. The cashier was sitting down and don't say a word to me. I finally said "Do I order from you", and got this stare at me as though I was an idiot. So, that canceled my purchase. I get that being a cashier at the Airport Leopolds is not the most glamorous job, but being outwardly uninterested in the job really doesn't serve anyone. Yum! Savannah Socialite and Pistachio were a solid combo double scoop. A delay causing a missed connection allowed me to sit in the main terminal waiting for a flight out. The ice cream hit the spot. Not too sweet and the right balance of richness, nuttiness and sweet. There's a second location past TSA if that's where you are headed in a rush since you can't bring it through security. This is for the kiosk after security. I was not happy with the service. The girl was nice but didn't understand what I was saying. I wanted a single scoop with two flavors. So she ended up just giving me one flavor and two scoops of it. The strawberry lemonade sorbet is good but super crumbly so it makes a mess everywhere. Savannah airport is too hot inside and the sorbet melted on my purse before I could find an open seat. Also, people don't understand the kiosk's entrance and exit ropes. So there is a jam up at front. Frustrating and expensive. Not much else to do at the airport so people will go here, to a Starbucks kiosk, or the PGA place for food. Maybe a milkshake was the way to go. The sorbet is very messy and I got it in a cup. Also, I didn't see or get any napkins so I went over to the Starbucks stand and got it myself. read more

The line at the downtown location was so long so we never got it until we were actually waiting for our flight. Only 2 people ahead of us and the woman working was SOOOOOO friendly. Quick service and didn't have to wait in long lines like their popular store on Broughton. Sitting in an airport waiting to pick up someone is actually pretty boring like watching paint dry but eating a single scope of lemon custard helps the time go by. Collins provided excellent customer service! She has a great personality and interacts very well with the customers. My favorite ice cream flavor at Leopold's is honey almond but they don't carry it at the airport location so my backup is lemon custard. One suggestion is to have a water pitcher like the Broughton location does. I did try a sample of the cherry blossom and the flavor was wonderful and very light. It is an ice cream to eat after a heavy meal. The cherry blossoms brought back great memories when I was in Bonn, Germany. Leopold's is really good ice cream. Really, really good ice cream. It's been around for almost a century (will be a century in just a months!). The lines outside their store on Broughton Street can be daunting. Luckily, there's now a location at the airport. It's outside the TSA security area, so you can have this really, really good ice cream even if you're not the one traveling. The airport location does not have the honey almond flavor (one of my favorites, made with local Savannah bee honey), so I usually go with the butter pecan (the next best, made with Georgia-grown pecans). They seem to have stopped making their snickerdoodle ice cream (snickerdoodle cookies blended in ice cream!), which I had first eaten at The Grey. On my most recent visit to the airport location, I happened to meet Mary Leopold, and found her to be one of the kindest humans I had ever met. read more
