Love this store for their products, but their customer service was a horrible tonight. We were in the store about 10 mins prior to closing and the store employees kept circling around telling us they are closing soon. Then they turned off the music and came around to tell us they were closing. I have never seen employees so rude to customers in a long time. read more

Everything you could possibly want is crammed into two floors of bright colors and peppered dark chocolate truffle insanity. This place is an amazing kitchen store with fair prices and hard to find items. The owners were in the restaurant business themselves and really know quality. A lot of unique olive oil flavors, and spices too! I found a steel mallet for tenderizing meat, and I was totally wondering if they were going to let me carry it on the plane, in my carry-on bag, but the security checkpoint did, and it was such a good price and quality I had to take a risk. I also have an innocent face so I think the security checkpoint at the airport didn't think I was going to use it to bash anyone's head into unconsciousness. One step inside this cook's paradise, and it instantly vaulted ahead of any foodie-targeted store I've ever shopped. First there was the wine (two bottle of Avondale Sauvignon Blanc, please?). Then there was the rubs (how about some coffee rub for the beef?). I could have spent hours examining every kitchen gadget, local sauce and other cooking finery. The true coup, however, was the oil-tasting aisle. Yes, you read that right: Oil tasting, by the Dixie-thimble cupful. After sampling several (even our 3-year-old got in the act, and loved it!), we settled on the blood-orange infused olive oil, and have been making it a part of every recipe we can since we've been home. What worries us most is what to do when we run out. We're a month removed from our Maine vacation, and already we're down to a quarter of the bottle left. It very likely will require a return trip to Portland, just for LeRoux's oil. It's truly worth the trip. read more

One of my favorite kitchen stores of all times. If you need, it they've probably got it! They have kitchen gadgets, oil, mixes, sauces, chocolates, pans, bowls, linens, appliances. I always walk in not needing anything and walking out with a bag of fun trinkets. Last time I was in, I found individual packets of popcorn in different kernel types, very small tiny measuring bowls and some tasty chocolate bars. The vinegar, the vinegar, the vinegar! Yes, it's a cornucopia of wonderful kitchen goods. Yes, they have a fabulous selection of local preserves, mustards, hot sauces, and candies. All of this is true and more, but what you must go to Leroux for is the vinegar. Near the center of the shop, there is an aisle with shelves stocked with silver decanters of assorted vinegars on one side, and olive oils on the other. Small paper cups are stacked for you to sample the goods. Now I'm not really one to enjoy olive oil all by itself, but the vinegar rocks my world. My entire world is rocked by this vinegar. It rocks. Ooph. The 18 Year Balsamic. The Dark Chocolate Balsamic. The French Champaign White! This stuff is nectar of the gods, and if you like vinegar, or delicious things at all, it's worth a trip into Old Port just to sample Leroux's. read more

A nice market down on the water of the Old Port. I started coming here when it had a whole other name, but it hasn't changed much otherwise. They sell higher tier merchandise like infused oils and kitchen gadgetry. The staff don't wander around to help you, but they answer any questions you have at the register. I am happy that they have a large setup for sampling the infuse oils and vinegar they sell. At an average of $14 a bottle, you have to try it first. My three stars are based on my biased experience. It used to be cheaper here, yes; I also now live in NYC where these kinds of shops are almost a dime a dozen. Plus, in Maine, we have a very strong sense of locally made. In NYC, there is much more international variety. Both are good....just different. read more

I was in Portland for a wedding and stopped in the store. Bought one bottle of vinegar and brought it home. After consuming, wanted more and was sorry that i hadn't further indulged when i was there in person but their website offered an easy solution! Excellent products, excellent customer service...why shop anywhere else? And i didn't have to lug it home myself! Yes, the vinegars and oils are more costly than those you'd find in a grocery store but you cannot compare them to grocery store quality. If you are looking for unique and delicious substance, you can rely on these without ever tasting them beforehand and know their products are absolutely competitively priced with other high end products of similar quality, and in some cases cost less than I've spent. The flavors they offer are inspired and their delivery service is nearly immediate. True, their website can be a little clunky but be patient cuz it's worth it. I had an issue when ordering and called the customer service number ON A SUNDAY and reached an actual person on the phone who works in the store, was knowledgeable even though the website wasn't his area of expertise, helped me with the issue and followed up with the right people to ensure my order was properly processed- the next day! My order arrived 2 days later. The shipping company was rough with the package despite the FRAGILE stickers applied but my 22 bottles (holidays are coming folks & what could be a better gift for loved ones than to share liquid yumminess) were well protected within the packaging. As they had been so outstanding in assisting me, as a courtesy FYI, I emailed them a photo of the box's condition so they could see for themselves that their expense at careful packaging was worth it as the box was torn on 3 sides of the bottom and held together by packing tape applied by the trucking company. I did mention that one of the bottles was a bit sticky around the protective foil but was not broken and I was not asking for a replacement, just remarking that all survived such rough shipment conditions. I got an immediate response to my email and not only was thanked for letting them know of my experience but delightfully surprised to learn that they had already processed a replacement for the one bottle mentioned. They did not want to risk that there may have been some issue under the sticky foil and sent the bottle proactively. That's great customer service! If you haven't guessed by now, I highly recommend this company and their products. So nice to deal with a company that has high standards, excellent products, and is concerned about your experience and happy to make sure you are satisfied... not to mention that it seems obvious that the folks I spoke with really care about their job; a great value in every way! Personal faves: Sicilian Lemon White Balsamic (‼), Neapolitan, Maple, Espresso, Blood Orange Oil, Persian Lime, Tuscan Herb... honestly every one I have tried is outstanding... looking forward to opening and tasting all the others I've ordered. I have a few friends who now love them too and we order together to save on shipping and we share ideas on using the flavors. Great hostess gifts and thank you gifts by mail! I find pros and cons to Leroux... Pros...the balsamic vinegars and oils..the fact that you can taste test them is fantastic...size of the store is another plus...some room to navigate...variety of items is also quite nice... cons - parking....the meter cops are vicious...the second your meter runs out...bam...parking ticket....DON'T PARK WITHOUT FEEDING A METER!!! the culinary knife selection is good but on the pricey side...the enamel cast iron ware is horrible...they only carry Le Crueset...top of the line...even though Le Cruset is not ranked as top of the line...now I'm not expecting the garbage sold from the Food Network...but there are other Enamel Cast Iron cookware lines that are affordable.. NO website...just says its under construction...c'mon folks...the cooks Emporium in Bath at least has a passable website...all in all I enjoy going in...window shopping and finding a few things I can't find anywhere else UPDATE...they finally got their website up....and its fairly complete.... read more

3 strikes La Roux is out. I will never go again. Haughty sales people -- didn't even let me finish my question before saying no, and with no apology or indication they'd like my business. I prefer to support a small PORTLAND business rather than the Mall or Amazon but with their attitude now 3 times in a row, I won't go back. This time my request was about a discount for buying a large quantity. They didn't even wait to hear how many. Just NO. Last visit they wouldn't take my check without a printed phone number and id. Kill me now, I have found kitchen nirvana. ~ Every New England coastal town has a kitchen store or two. Provincetown, Newburyport, you name it. But THIS by FAR exceeds them all! ~ 2 floors - TWO FLOORS worth of kitchen awesomeness! The first floor is HUGE - a bit cramped but HUGE! To the left is a modest wine selection. To the right is a "bar" area where you can sample all these wonderful flavored oils and vinegar. Pasta and orzo for sale here. To the back is this enormous area selling all kitchenware you could ever need. Knives, cutting boards, presses, bakeware, measuring cups, whisks, plates, whatever - think of it and you'll find it here. Remember that tiny grater thing you saw once and have lamented not buying ever since? It's here. ~ Upstairs - I didn't even GET to it because I was so enamoured with that first floor! Terrible customer service - unless you are coming to spend money. In that case, they dance around you, but only until you spend the money. Mostly overpriced stuff that you can easily find at TJ Maxx or Marshals for less than the half price. I bought a tea kettle from Le Creuset, spend close to 100$, hoping to get a good product that would last and supporting a local store. Instead, within 6 months, I was flabbergasted to find there was lots of rust on the inside. I have been drinking rusty water each time I made a cup of coffee or tea. I went back, asked to get assistance with returning it to the company and realized that these people only care if you bring money in. I should have bought it from Amazon - at least you can return without any hassle and embarrassment by an employee that could care less about the fact that the local customer spent 100$ on a rusty kettle. No apology, no offer to help with returning, blowing you off with cheap stories such as "the company prefers to deal with the customers directly, not through us" and similar insulting excuses. If you want to be treated like s..t, after you pay tons of money, and be stupid enough to think it is good to support a local store, then by all means, go to Le Roux Kitchen in Portland. As far as I am concerned, they can go broke tomorrow. This is how you lose customers - I will make sure people know about these guys. read more

Now that I'm back in Boston, I'm really kicking myself for not buying one of their vinegars for salads (so many to choose from!). I do wish that they were available in much smaller quantities (almost like flights of cocktails), so you weren't stuck eating salads with peach balsamic vinegar for the next six months. The staff was very accommodating and spent a lot of time with us offering his personal opinions along with industry knowledge on the chef knives that we were interested in looking in. Was able to help us in detailing the differences between the Japanese and German/European knives strengths and weakness along with company warranties/information on sharpening. Would highly recommend this store for kitchenware as well as their array of vinegar oils. They had a sampling area set up with many different varieties, my two favorite would probably be white truffle and black truffle. read more

They do have some pretty cool stuff here - but a lot of it you can just get at bed bath beyond or sur la table online and not deal with this crazy tourist crowd. they do sell some pretty interesting chocolates (like the Vosges Haute bacon bars) and have a big selection of extra virgin olive oil and such .. a good stop for a home cook looking for some new gear. read more

This downtown location is multi-floored with a cooking kitchen. Like all the stores in this little chain, there are things here you never knew you needed. When I was checking out, the cashier asked if "this is yours as well" and I said "no. I don't even know what that is" as i looked at a wooden slotted rectangle. To which she replied "It's a drawer organizer for knives! it even has a space in the middle for your sharping tool. They come in half sizes too depending on how much drawer space you have." All of a sudden, the image of my knife drawer popped to mind and how the knives are scattered and a mess and how I can never find the one I want without having to move a bunch around risking my fingers... and suddenly I wanted this bamboo slotted thing that two seconds before I had no idea what it was! I did manage to control myself and only purchase what I came in. However, if you need anything to do with a kitchen/bar/table this is the place to check out and if you can't find it, ask! The staff is amazing. The only drawback is the on street parking which can be tough in little ol' Portland, however, with so many other little shops to check out, it's worth the time to get a spot and meander down the sidewalks. read more

Wow! This was the nicest kitchen store I have ever been to. The selection is beyond belief. There is an upstairs and a downstairs filled with quality kitchen supplies. They have an incredible selection of all-clad, calphalon, le cruset, breville etc. there is a gorgeous kitchen on the second floor and some of the employees were cooking a big turkey and veggies for samples.
