Swung by Le's on a recommendation of a local and was not disappointed. We tried the chashu over rice and a duck and roast pork noodle soup. Both were very tasty. The soup tasted more akin to an American chicken noodle soup than the traditional Chinese noodle soups I'm accustomed to especially with the fresh celery and herbs, but I wasn't mad about it. The broth was flavorful, the noodles were nice and the meat was all juicy and full of flavor. The roast pork also had a perfectly crispy skin. The chashu was also good. They used a little too much red dye for my partner's and my liking, but the meat was flavorful and the cut of pork was not too fat and not too lean. The steamed vegetables that came with the dish had a hint of 5 spice and were really nice. The lady running the counter was very sweet and it was nice seeing how busy the place was with takeout. What an amazing shop! I loved being able to pick up some foods that reminded me of home. The ordering process was very easy. We called our order ahead, and it was ready by the time we arrived 15 minutes later. As recommended by friends, we ordered roast duck. It's definitely worth it to order the whole duck rather than the half portion! The flavor was perfectly savory and sweet, and I was happy to see the duck has a crispy skin and was not at all dry. Service is efficient and COVID-friendly. You do not enter the seating area. There is plexiglass between employees and customers with a built-in box that the employees place the food in. COVID19 review: great ordering service right at their window. It is the second window on the side of the building where the door is. Or call ahead and place your order. It's not a traditional sliding riding window. It's a window that doesn't look like it opens. I put in my order and under 10 min I received my food. Today was roasted a little longer than normal. We have come by here a few times for our Chinese food fix! They have pretty good fried rice, my husband likes their orange chicken and their bbq duck and bbq pork. The portions are pretty big, enough for two meals, which is great for the price. Personally, My fav thing to order is their noodle soup! Everything comes separate so it doesn't get mushy on the way home. I reheat the broth a little on the stove when I get home and then mix everything. Again- it's a generous portion and easy to split! This place is THE place to come get our family's Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Char Siu or WHOLE ROASTED PIG for a special occasion! I am so appreciative that we have an establishment like this here in Des Moines. We lack in so many good restaurants when it comes to asian restaurants, but we are very lucky to have this place here. I usually just go in and order the BBQ meats chopped up and take it home to the family to eat but you can order and eat in the restaurant as well. We come here frequently and the new owners have done the old owners right by still making the food so so so good! They have also elaborated on their menu and added on a wonderful fried rice and Roast Duck Noodle Soup option. Even their General's Chicken is good! Who knew? Haha I also like to get their Banh Mi. I love that they use their own BBQ meats for the sandwich. The Food: Roast Duck 5/5 I prefer the round duck over the flat duck. To me, it's juicier. Make sure you ask for extra sauce! Unfortunately this restaurant is going out of business but after speaking to the owner, it's possible they will reopen at a new location which I hope will be the case. The roast duck is delicious and flavorful. If you have pretty decent knife skills, you can ask for the whole duck uncut and make it into Peking Duck. This was great Chinese BBQ in a city I did not expect. I got roast duck, roast pork (crispy skin is great), and BBQ pork (charsiu). This place was super legit- they have everything hanging and the flavors were all there. I got 1 lb of each of the porks and then asked for some broccoli and rice (oyster sauce was very nice) and ate it family style. Overall, I was super pleased with my experience here and it was decent value as well. $12 per lb for the meats was awesome and I would certainly come back to Le's. Note: No dine ins right now, takeout only. The takeout for the Chinese BBQ is super quick, you can walk in and order/get the food within 5 minutes. I was driving my mothers car from the Bay Area to Minnesota and i was desperate for "close to authentic" Chinese food. After eating fast food for the past two days, I found my salvation in this little hole in the wall Chinese BBQ place in Des Moines. Although the lady behind the chopping board speaks Mandarin and not Cantonese, the food is great for out of town people like me that is used to the stuff back in the bay. The roast pork ( the pig ) is really crispy and not too crazy with salt which gives it a great flavor. My beef with broccoli was a little salty, which is given for being in the middle of America. This place does roasted duck and pork right. The duck is meaty and not as boney as some other places, which makes it easier and much more enjoyable to eat. You can get it by the whole or half duck. I would recommend getting an order of both half duck and half pork. The order comes with two types of sauce as well, both very good. I especially like the combo fried rice, which has a combo of their BBQ meat options and shrimp. You can even order a whole roasted pig if needed for an occasion or event. Just make sure to order ahead of time, like a few days or a week ahead, for example. I've never actually eaten inside of here; always got it to-go. But, everything on the menu looks like it would be great as well. The owners are very nice and friendly people. Overall, great restaurant who does BBQ right. The thick, crispy skin is both crispy and juicy, it's much thicker than chicken skin and has so much more flavor. We've driven by this little place literally dozens of times and often mused how we had to try it sometime. Tonight was that night. It's cozy and nicely modern inside. Please, somebody go to this restaurant!! Seriously, I was the only customer there on a Sat. afternoon. It's the only authentic Hong Kong-style BBQ restaurant in Des Moines (probably the entire state of IA). Having lived for a semester in Hong Kong, I can tell you that this is the real deal - glistening whole glazed and roasted ducks, pork belly/tenderloins, chickens, etc. hanging under halogen bulbs, freshly cut up for each customer. All you need is to order one of these things over rice or noodle soup and you're set. If you want take-out, you can simply take a whole chicken or duck and pay by the pound. And, the prices are very good. I really don't want this place to go out of business, as this kind of cooking is a real art, and probably won't appear again in the area if they go under. I and my fiancé stopped into this place because of the reviews and I was not disappointed! First thing you notice when you walk in is how clean the place. Their menu does consist of your average American Chinese meals like; Sesame Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein, combination fried rice etc, but we came here for the BBQ Duck. Me and my fiancé orders two BBQ Duck with rice, order of crab rangoon's, and two egg roll's (you have to order them separate from your meal) and two canned Sprites. The crab rangoon's were some of the best I've had. They were fried perfectly and the sauce they give you is a new take on the average old sweet red sauce you usually see at every Chinese restaurant. It's tangy, sweet, and spicy. The egg rolls were very good too! They consisted of vegetable and meat mix. Our main course was very good! The rice was cooked to perfection and the duck tasted amazing, but obviously the best part is the skin! Amazing flavor and very crisp!! Now! I don't usually eat duck because I'm not a big fan of the taste and I'm still not! But I would actually eat this again. Duck is kind of an acquired taste, when you bite into it you're expecting some sort of chicken flavor, but that's not what you get. Duck is naturally very gamey and fatty, and has a little tougher texture then regular chicken does. It's also darker meat, almost beef like. This place is probably the best Asian BBQ in the state of Iowa. There is one in C Fresh market but it doesn't compare to this place. Food 5/5 - House special fried rice was awesome. They put a whole lot of pork in the fried rice along with some shrimp. Chicken wings were good too with the famous Char su bbq seasoning (that's what gives it the red coloring) I love their red chili sauce they give you along side of the BBQ meat you order, it goes good with every thing. I will definitely be back again to try their duck noodle soup. Service 3/5 - The lady at the counter is not the most friendly person you will ever meet so service was just ok. Just strictly business. First of all, don't be put off by the appearance outside. It does look sketchy and that might scare you off, but you'll be so glad if you try this place. When you go inside you'll see that it's very nice and clean. And the scent of meat wafting in the air is incredible. This has been on my list of places to try for a long time, so my husband and I finally tried it. The food was so good and authentic! I've never had Chinese barbecue before so I didn't know what to expect. I got the barbecue tender pork with rice and mixed vegetables and my husband got the barbecue duck with rice and mixed vegetables. I guess I was expecting carrots and stir fried vegetables because Americanized Chinese food was my only frame of reference. So I was really surprised when I got my food and I saw the steamed cabbage and broccoli. There was also a small container of sauce on the side that looked like broth. I poured it over everything and dug in. Everything was delicious. I usually don't like steamed vegetables but these tasted like they had a hint of ginger and other spices. I think maybe they were steamed in a seasoned broth. The pork was tender and flavorful, too. I tried some of my husband's duck and it was very good, too. And this is coming from someone who doesn't really care for duck. I'm glad I read another Yelper's review about ordering the barbecue tender pork which is their name for char siu because I loved what I ordered. We both want to try some of their other dishes next time. They also have some noodle soup dishes and common Chinese fried rice and stir fried dishes. One thing we didn't like was that it was freezing in the restaurant. It was cool outside on the day we went, but the cold AC would probably feel nice on a really hot summer day.
