    Smoked meat

The smoked meat is delicious here! Made to perfection! I've had a lot of smoked meat in Montreal and this is honestly the best! The pickles here are so good also! Waitress was super friendly and was very attentive! Loved the decor in here! Come here if you want delicious smoked meat!

Visited Montreal and this was the best smoked meat we had on our trip! Much better than Schwartz's and no wait at all. The meat was way more juicy, flavorful, and less salty, and tasted great on both a sandwich and on top of poutine. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting, and would return again!

Amazing!! If you haven't been, the smokemeat here is much better than the touristy Swartz and Dunn's. This place brines their meat and it's less salty and much more flavorful. They have sliced/sealed packages so you can bring back home if you are from abroad. Go give this a try, you won't be disappointed.

of all the smoked meat sandwich restaurants i have tried in montreal, i have to say that this one is the best. very old place with a lots of also old regulars. The quality of the meat is excellent. The decor mérinos me of the 60-70 Not an elegant or romantic place. you come here for the best sandwich in town. The service is friendly and efficient but if you stay too long after you paid your bill, they will let you know.

So we ordered two sandwiches from Schwartz's before coming to Lester's Deli so we can fairly compare the two. First Lester's service was excellent. The guy was nice and concise. He made me very comfortable and belonging, what a family own business gave me. The sandwich was soft but lacked a bit of flavor, then Schwartz, but still decent. Also, get the Cott cheery soda when you are there. It was a soda I had never had before. Come Lester's and support local businesses that actually gave that type of service.

The smoked meat sandwich is the way to go! This came highly recommended for our visit to Montreal, and now we know why. We ordered the salami sandwich and the smoked meat sandwich. The salami sandwich was just too much salami, and not too flavorful. The smoked meat sandwich, that sandwich brings the flavor! The meat was so delicious, and every bit you just wanted more! I wish we had ordered two smoked meat sandwiches! The staff was so friendly and the restaurant had such a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely recommend stopping in if you're in Montreal!

Came here for a food tour stop and it was a great restuarant. The meat was fresh and the bread soft. There was just enough mustard on the smoked meat sandwich. The only thing was that it was too cold for my liking. I like warm meat and this was kinda cold. It didn't melt in my mouth as much as it could have if warmed. The staff was so lovely here and it felt like a piece of the neighborhood. I'd definitely come back for a club sandwich and a pickle.

A Montreal institution. Lester's smoked meat is closer to corned beef. The flavor profile of the smoked meat is close to bologna. This is not a bad thing - the sandwich is delicious. The service is attentive and the room is a step back in history.

Why wait in line at Schwartz's...Lester's was just as good, sandwiches were larger and with more meat. The meat is prepared elsewhere which is different than Schwartz's which prepares the meat in house. At Lester's, there was plenty of seating and they SELL BEER!!! Perfect place for pastrami Sami and some suds.

I had the smoked meat sandwich & poutine with chopped up smoked meat. Both were delicious, especially with the vinegar in the spray bottle. Bathrooms in the back - getting to them is hard because of tight space/large size person beware. Server was ok with our request for 2 separate bills. Recommend

Regular Medium Fat Smoked Meat Sandwich

Probably the best all round meal in Montreal that we had during the Grand Prix weekend. Wanting to avoid the 2 hour wait at Schwartz's, we elected to go directly to Lester's as it was always the second choice by most other polls... And boy, are we glad we did!!! Just a few tables occupied inside as we strolled up around 130pm Friday. The staff was immediately friendly, funny, hospitable and helpful. Service was quick and efficient. The smoked meat sandwich was utter perfection. The medium fat meat that we chose simply melted in your mouth without a greasy or fatty taste at all!! The rye bread that the sandwich came on was perfection as well....strong enough to hold up to the task but felt like a cloud in your mouth. All four of us eating agreed that this was in our top sandwiches of all time. The cole slaw, pickles and fries are necessary additions. We also loved how when we ordered 4 beers, they just brought 4 beers....no question about what type...and they were great Pales. I just wished we had room for the cheesecake...next time!! Make Lester's your next Smoked Meat destination...you won't regret it!!!

Amazing food, service , and ambiance…read more A visit to Montreal isn't complete without a stop at Schwartz's Deli. The smoked meat sandwich absolutely lived up to the hype. The meat was incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, piled high between fresh rye bread with just the right amount of mustard. The atmosphere is classic, authentic, and full of history. Even with the line outside, the service was efficient and friendly, and the food was worth every minute of the wait. The pickle and fries were the perfect sides to complement the rich smoked meat. You can tell why this place has become a Montreal institution. Simple menu, legendary food, and an experience that feels uniquely local. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Montreal.

We walked into a space that is small, constantly packed, and built around fast turnover rather than comfort, with people lining up at the counter while orders get called out across a loud, crowded room. The energy hit us right away, and it felt more like stepping into a system that has been running the same way for decades rather than a modern restaurant experience. The smoked meat sandwich is the main reason to come here, and it delivers in a very direct, no-frills way. We ordered one and found the meat thick, heavily seasoned, and with a deep smoky flavor that came through right away. The texture stood out most, tender but still structured enough to hold its bite, especially when stacked on rye bread with mustard. It is simple in concept but feels complete in execution, with nothing on the plate trying to distract from the main item. The sides like pickles, coleslaw, and fries felt more supportive than essential. We tried the poutine and found it solid and filling, but it clearly sat in the background compared to the smoked meat sandwich. Everything on the menu seemed centered around that one item, and the rest of the food reinforced that focus rather than expanding it into a wider dining experience. Seating is communal and tightly packed, which added to the overall intensity of the place. It was common to share tables with strangers, and there was very little personal space once we sat down. The noise level stayed high the entire time, but the service was quick, so the pace of the meal kept things moving even when it felt crowded. Schwartz's Deli feels like a Montreal institution defined by its simplicity and consistency. It is not a comfortable sit-down meal, but the smoked meat sandwich is strong enough to make the entire experience worth it, especially if you are there for what it is known for rather than the setting around it.

Literally between the time I handed over my money and the cashier turned around to make change from the register behind her, my order was ready and bagged in front of me before I got my change back. I had nothing else to do but walk out and find a place to eat. I was literally in the store for less than 2 minutes! Now the Wilensky is salami, bologna, and your choice of cheese on a roll (that reminds me of an english muffin) with yellow mustard. Simple but absolutely delicious! I've had bologna sandwiches before but never thought to add salami which adds a little spice. That bun was super pillowy and just eased right on down after taking a bite. I generally hate yellow mustard but this wasn't overbearing smear. Each Wilensky was like $5 each and incredibly satisfying. The first steps through the door, it was as if I time travelled directly to 1930s, old weird looking slender poles with round wooden seats, wood cabinetry, and short countertops. The old school was transferred to payments as the prefer cash and accepts Canadian form of debit cards but not American. There are signs basically to say, your way doesn't count. If you order a Wilensky special, it's their way and I'm ok with that. Because their way works! There's also another sign to say no tipping and any money leftover after settling the bill goes to charity, how wonderfully generous that is. Regarding the promptness of my food, I did show up 10 minutes before closing and the prompt service was expected as everyone has places to be and places to go after work. I totally enjoyed the no nonsense effort.

A little out of the way from everything else had been doing, but wanted to check out this local institution. So glad I did! Did not expect Zytynsky's being in such an unpretentious brick building, but the magic was all inside. The store had an excellent curated selection of Eastern European gourmet items, all clearly presented with pride. Since I was on vacation, my goal was something to eat that day, but did spend some time looking at all the imported goodies. When I arrived, Angel, the extremely friendly woman behind the counter, was dealing with a couple of familiar faces to her. I overheard that she's been at the store for about 40 years, but I didn't realize that she was the owner and the founder was her grandfather. At my turn to order, I asked her for some suggestions. Ending up with a Smoked Meat Sandwich and a Polish Ham, Hungarian Salami and Cheese Sandwich. Also grabbed two cans of Ukrainian Zero Alcohol Beer. We chatted a little while she prepared my food, and she was absolutely charming. Able to enjoy both sandwiches upon return to my hotel. While for years been a big fan of Hungarian Salami (which was fantastic) the star on that sandwich was the amazing Polish Ham... maybe the best I've ever had!
