There is a lot to enjoy here. It's a plant-based restaurant with food that tastes great... depending on what you're looking for from your plant-based food. The pancakes went over well for me, but not for other people. It was a chewy texture, which I really enjoyed. However, their tacos were superb. That's what really stood out for me. The jackfruit tacos were the real winner, with enough spice to stand out, but not so much that it took away from the jackfruit, and the sauce that made them sing. The burger was alright, which is nothing to scoff at. But, take note: four stars. The space has room for maybe 8 tables and it is pretty casual with green wheat grass decor I believe. The Food: The food was really good. We ordered the festive bowl, the goddess bowl and wedged potatoes. The wedged potatoes were really good. I enjoyed the sauce it came with for the first few bites and then switched to ketchup, since it was a bit too oily for me. The goddess bowl was our favourite dish. It was filling and came with tofu, beets, carrots, kale, brown rice, tamari, and a cashew ginger sauce. The flavours were fantastic and I highly recommend this bowl. The Holiday bowl was my least favourite dish. It came with savoury jackfruit, stuffing, kale, dried cranberries, a lemon tahini sauce, rice and sweet potatoes. The lemon tahini sauce was good but I felt like this dish was missing substance. It didn't have too much protein and the flavours didn't do it for me. The cafe is cute and in a great location to have a picnic but the food isn't good. The smoothie was the only thing we enjoyed. The nachos were disgusting! I'd be embarrassed to serve that at home. I appreciated that they had Gluten-Free French Toast as I had been craving it for awhile. The place is quaint with a cute patio and right near the water. The staff is friendly and they have a wide variety of options for everyone; even if you're not vegan. I would've appreciated more fruit with my meal but that's the only critique I have. Great food and definitely to be tried out if you are vegan. Food: They have quite a substantial menu. We went for Turmeric Blendie and Blue Goddess to start with. Turmeric Blendie was great. Very homely and the froth on top just elevated the humble nutritious drink. Turmeric has some amazing medicinal values as well - so a great choice for morning breakfast. Blue Goddess was great too. For the food, we went for GF Pancakes with Blueberries and Bananas, a Power Bowl and a BLAT sandwich. GF Pancakes with Blueberries and Bananas were absolutely delicious. They claim to make the best pancakes in the town and I'm quite sure those are the best in town. Power Bowl was very good, especially the mushrooms and the sweet potatoes. However, the BLAT didn't impress as much. While the ingredients were great but they slide off the sandwich as you pick it up which made it messy to eat - not a good thing to make a great sandwich. Ambiance: They have good seating capacity but it's too congested. Many tables cramped up in a small space. There are tables with high chairs as well as regular tables as well. But as I saw, many people just do a takeaway. Staff: The staff is quite good and friendly. The gentleman on the floor, greeting the customers, walked us through the menu and how to go about ordering. He got into a little chat to know us better. Considering that he wasn't surprised us coming all the way from Toronto, I guess he must be routinely having customers from the Toronto and the Niagara area. The service was quite good and quick. I sampled the nachos (excellent), avocado fries (surprisingly disappointing, maybe the seasoning?), and Cali burger (very good). I also opted for the only non-banana smoothie in the Blue Goddess (good). I didn't have room for any dessert at the end, but I was eyeing those chocolate coconut treats. The food is fresh and well prepared. The service is excellent and very friendly. The outside seating is also a nice perk. Good food, somewhat premium prices, but the quality is there. While an interesting combination of ingredients, it pretty much reminded me of the smoothies I use to make at home. Not worth the money. Even if it was free, it wasn't fantastic. What is there not to love about this place? This is the real deal when it comes to down to earth, healthy, wholesome real food :) They have a full Gluten Free menu and a full staff so you are served promptly and even on their busiest day (I was there) I was still served quickly and there was seating. I tried a few of their bowls, forget the names but the flavors and composition were complex. Shiitake mushrooms, avocados, radish, yummy sauces with really good spices. My favorite thing on the menu is the BLAT (coconut bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato). Their thick cut potatoes paired perfectly. I was so full after this for lunch the other day I had to skip dinner. The portions are huge! Their smoothies are also really good and their chocolate coconut dessert is amazing! Very humble of them: their default tip is 10% on the Visa machine. My daughter who is 8 months old has a corn allergy. If I eat anything with corn in it, it passes onto her as she is breastfed and she has a reaction. So I asked them if their cupcakes are completely free of corn ingredients. I was told that they are. No corn starch, corn syrup, corn anything!! "Awesome!" I thought. Next time I go to Burlington I planned to get some yumminess! In the meantime, the thought occurred to me for them to make my daughter's first birthday cake. Being such a wee little thing who reacts to certain foods, I naturally want to know what is in everything I give to her. Also, being health conscious (and extra diligent for the baby), knowing what is in your food, your skin care, cleaning products, etc is just a part of being a responsible consumer. Being a health conscious company, I would expect kindfood to be on board with that. So I asked through email as well as on Facebook when my email was ignored for ingredient lists of their cakes. Even specifying chocolate if they didn't want to list all their cakes. After a few more days of being ignored, I finally called them up. I was told it isn't possible to get an ingredient list. When I began to discuss my situation I mentioned corn. I was told that there is corn starch in the icing and they have no alternative. And yes, the same kind of icing for the cupcakes that I was told is 100% corn free. Good thing I didn't try it afterall! Finally, thinking that perhaps there is one great big misunderstanding and giving them the benefit of the doubt, I expressed my disappointment on their Facebook wall about the situation. They responded by telling me some of their ingredients in a cake but refused to tell me all stating that they must keep this information private as their ingredients make up their recipes. I was told that I can come up with a list of ingredients my daughter can't have and they will tell me what cakes she can have. Finally when I advised that it isn't just about what she can't have but what I don't want her eating at 1yr of age (especially seeing how she reacts to certain foods) I am not going to come up with a list of every possible ingredient I wouldn't want her consuming just yet - they removed the message With all the products out there labelled as "natural", "green", "healthy" etc. The only way to verify those claims is through ingredient lists. If someone refuses to tell you what is in their product, you've gotta question their claims. UPDATE: In response to Kelly Childs, I counted 6 lies in your response to me. I still have the original emails and just took a screenshot of one of the facebook conversations in which "KINDFOOD" says "corn nothing". I have just uploaded screenshots to the photos section of 1. the first time I asked about corn and 2. the email I sent and was ignored for a week before I phoned asking for exactly what I asked for in the email. Be very wary of a company (especially a wellness company) that does not want you to know what you are biting into and then posts outright lies when concerns are raised. You know what they say "if it seems too good to be true..." BEWARE: I received a private message from Kelly C of Kindfood threatening legal action. I will not be bullied so you and your company can do as you see fit but before you proceed I would like to point out: 1.My review is factual and can be backed up with screenshots of conversations. 2. Some of your lies have already been revealed with the screenshots I posted. Feel free to retract these lies but as you may be able to guess, I have taken screenshots. 3. There are inconsistencies with your story. You can try to identify them and correct them but I have taken screenshots of those. 4. You have absolutely no evidence to back up the claims you have made against me. I know this because they don't exist. 5. If you choose to fabricate evidence, you will be found out in court. I posted a completely honest review to which you could have responded "yes, we don't want you to know everything that goes into our cakes. Deal with it" or something along those lines. Instead, you dug yourself a hole with lies. Perhaps a professional PR rep is in order as the DIY approach may not be for you. "Yelpers are not vegans!" At least that's what you might think after noticing that Lettuce Love Cafe is rated the best restaurant out of approx. 400 in Burlington on TripAdvisor and it barely makes the top 50 on Yelp. And with only 33 or so reviews on Yelp and over 300 on TA, you might once again think that the ratings on this vegan restaurant have to do with how many vegans are Yelp reviewers vs. on TA. If you're a vegan, your choices are limited and thus Lettuce is great considering the lack of competition. So why does this much hyped TA cafe get only 3 stars? Once you get past the cult status of this place and buy into the "good food is not cheap" cliche, the proof, as they say is in the raw pudding. Overall the food seems to be lacking in flavor and if I assume for a minute that its my "non-vegan" palette that's throwing things off for me, II would still think that raw food can have flavor. We asked for some lemon to add to the Budha Bowl and it helped. The staff is very friendly and that helps when you're annoyed that they didn't get something right. We ordered a Tomato Protein Soup, a Wild Mushroom rice soup, the Avocado fries and a Budha bowl, but then cancelled the fries. I reiterated the order once again without the fries and they still came when our food was delivered to our table. I said "we didn't order the fries" and the food runner said "I'm sorry and walked away". So we kept them. The staff were too nice for us to complain. The avocado fries were bland and perhaps not baked enough. We expected the coating to provide a crispness to the fries and that was definitely missing. The Tomato Protein soup was just "okay" and was spicy but lacked that roasted tomato taste that we expected. The Wild Mushroom Rice soup was flat with little taste and while that could be a non-vegan palette thing again, the table behind us with what appeared to be 8 vegans, also said the soup was not that good. You could tell by the many half eaten bowls.The Budha Bowl was good but with all the ingredients, once again it should have "popped" a little better. The portabello mushrooms helped. The best part of the meal was the Tiramisu Cheesecake. They rocked that! The interior is bright and suggestive of a healthy mindset with Karma messages, energy lamps and condiments in refillable bottles. The seating, however, is a bit uncomfortable but there could be a good reason for that. Came here after biking the Burlington Hamilton area. Ordered Super salad and happy Buddha bowl plus the green smoothie. Smoothie quite good and sweet with a tinge of green which hints at the kale and spinach I guess. The salad and Buddha bowl were both delicious and hit the spot after 2 hours of bike riding. It was July 1st so that may have contributed to the really long wait for our food which is the only complaint. It was a lovely day so we sat outside and enjoyed the weather. We've visited this cafe several times. The food is good -- albeit a bit pricey for a casual, counter-order cafe. It's not fancy and the menu is small --- the cafe features nachos, Buddha bowls and veggie burgers -- but it's tasty and healthy. The serving sizes could be a bit larger, but overall the food is okay. I enjoyed the caesar salad -- quite tasty -- and the Buddha bowl. I've also had the House-made Veggie burger which was okay but not outstanding. The vegan nachos are pretty good. If there were a half-star rating, I'd deduct a half star for the seating. It's not real comfortable -- hard wooden stools and small (sometimes rocky) tables, but it's cozy (unless it's cold outside and you happen to be seated near the door). It seems like it's often quite too busy for the size of the cafe. Last night we wanted to go back for a quick meal. We remembered seeing a "reserved" sign on a table one night, so we phoned ahead to ask for a 7:00 p.m. reservation. The woman who answered the phone said that they didn't take reservations but that the place was "dead" (empty), so finding a table would not be a problem. Less than half an hour later, we were at the front door. There was not an empty seat in the house and there was a line-up at the front counter. We shared a gluten free spiced pumpkin muffin and a pink champagne cupcake, both were outstandingly amazing! Needless to say we were both super full for hours after eating there. Only wish they were closer to Toronto! We got a red velvet cupcake and their black magic cupcake to take away. I was super excited for the red velvet because they are my favorite cupcakes however I was extremely disappointed with this one, I ended up giving it away because I just didn't enjoy it. Went here today for the second time!! Last time I was here I tried the 7 vegetable soup (it was amazing). The two non-vegan friends I was with tried it and immediately ordered it as well. Today I wanted to try a couple other things so we got the nachos and the avocado fries. The nachos were delicious - a huge plate, fully loaded with fresh and flavourful toppings and the sour cream on the side was great. This place was great - from the vibe, to the service, to the food. Everything was spectacular. My family is a mix of vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters. Wanting to make sure the vegans had something to eat, we ventured to this restaurant. There were 10 of us plus a baby, and the staff were great in setting up tables for us, making suggestions, and adjusting our meals. I've tried Lettuce love twice now - I just have a thing for trying all the vegan places I can find! So many interesting menu choices. This joint is quite small, but does have some outdoor seating for when the weather is nice! Service is fast and friendly, and they will sub options if you aren't feeling a certain ingredient. I like that it is counter style ordering, you grab your number and they will bring your food over when it is ready. Love that concept! You grab your own water jug + glasses, and save a seat to wait for your food. The food comes out quite quickly and usually all at once if you are with another person. We ordered the Avocado fries and I ordered the Happy Buddha Bowl. The Avocado Fries were not my favourite - maybe I was just expecting something different, kind of like deep fried pickles actually. That is not at all what we got - so this is totally my fault and I can't blame the cafe for my lack of knowledge of what an Avocado fry is! Either way we ate them with the chipotle dip and they were not so bad. My Buddha Bowl on the other hand was delicious. Ingredients are so fresh and I felt like I was eating so clean and healthy! I've tried Kindfood's treats in the past at various events like the Vegetarian Food Festival, the Niagara Veg Fest, and others, so we drove down to Burlington for a visit, and wanted to try out their brunch. It's set up mostly as a take out place, with a few tables scattered around, and I can see why. I ordered the B.L.A.T and my partner ordered the huevos rancheros and a freshly squeezed orange juice. Coffee was also good (and they had coconut milk cream for it on the side table). I thought the bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato (B.L.A.T) sandwich was great and flavourful, the bread was soft and moist, and the opposite of most gluten-free breads I've tried in the past. I enjoyed the addition of carrots to the BLAT sandwich, because it added some interesting texture and flavour to the meal. Plus they were generous with the lovely green avocado in both my sandwich and my partners huevos rancheros which is always a nice touch. What initially seemed like a small portion was satisfying, and filling. We wrapped things up with a few treats to eat there, and take home with us. The giant layered brownie was great, as were some of the other cupcakes we tried later (albeit with a tonne of icing.) While the food and drinks were great, and the desserts were tasty, I didn't enjoy the constant endless sales pitch from one of the people that worked there. I think the entire time we were there he did not stop talking, loudly, and flitting around to every table asking how people were doing. I understand being friendly, and I think it's great, but then there is that level of oppressive, frenetic behaviour that can turn an otherwise nice brunch into a moment of tension. The near constant self-promotion, while we're already in the restaurant eating was really really tiresome. One of the other servers, I think I heard someone mention she was new, seemed genuinely friendly, and I found her calm, helpful demeanor much more pleasant. I walked in feeling excited, I left with the overwhelming feeling that I'd probably never return, except to take food out of there. In a word? distressing. One star for friendly staff and another for a decent green smoothie. This is for my most recent visit. Before, it might have been a three for average vegan fare. The BLAT (ba'cun, lettuce, avo, tomato), if i'm not mistaken, will run you 12 dollars. I'll dish out a bit more for healthy food, but this was absurd for a single sandwich. I had to take my sandwich apart to peer at the microscopic bits of ba'cun that added absolutely no taste or texture to the sandwich. Also, you would expect to receive a substantial side for the price, but two tbsps of red cabbage slaw was making me so sad. The nachos we shared were even more of a disappointment We've had these before - and they have been great! But the toppings were so scarce and the lettuce wasn't even shredded properly and the dominant topping was red onion...?. Dismal for $16. I know I'm not the only one complaining about the prices. Healthy food should not come at such a premium, no matter what the demographic in Burlington. I left just plain hungry. read more
