So happy I decided to stop at Planted In Hamilton for lunch today. I'm visiting Canada from the US and was happy to find a place with vegan poutine. It was delicious. Staff was astonishingly helpful and friendly. Counter person described each item on the menu for me, and helped me pick out exactly the right food to order. The nachos were delicious: crisp, and covered in savory sauces; The vegetarian Reuben sandwich was perfectly cooked and not soggy; and the soup of the day, a coconut-based cream soup, tart and tangy and a wonderful complement to the sandwich. Stopped by this wonderful vegan restaurant by way of South Florida.. My wife and I are on a 16 day roadtrip to see family and friends..we are on our way to Toronto, and we spoke to Logan on the phone and she directed us here.. The menu looked great and we shared a Grilled cheese and pesto sandwich with amazing fries and a Planters Bowl.. Both were awesome !! Taking some vegan doughnuts with us as well.. I love this place. It's located around downtown Hamilton in plaza with it's own parking. I've been here three times, had their mac n cheese, some of their sandwiches, and desserts. They have a large variety of items ranging from salad bowls to burgers to sandwiches to dessert. All the prices are very reasonable and unlike some vegan places that charge $20+ for a plate, most of their items range from $10 to $15 and are very filling. Overall, it's a healthy (if you want to be), tasty and nicely decorated place for a reasonable price. Would definitely recommend to everyone. read more

OMG sooo good here! Love the cozy, industrial big atmosphere, menu and drinks selection (including wine and beer), the service... everything! Came here with my two friends to celebrate the end of classes and the start of finals, upon arriving we noticed there was some really aesthetic decorations and seating areas. It was nice how you ordered up at the front and then found a seat and someone would bring your food over to you I decided to order the Cashew Mac as I have never tried a vegan Mac and cheese. I'm glad I decided on that as the sauce was different from a usual Mac and cheese but it was good different! My friends ordered the poutine and mexi bowl. From what I tried of the mexi bowl it seemed super yummy with lots of toppings The poutine however was lacking in the "cheese" but the gravy tasted pretty good considering it was a different kind of gravy than what I was used to Overall a great place for vegans, vegetarians and individuals who want to try good plant based food! read more

Thoroughly disappointed. Picked up the falafel bowl and an apple fritter. Falafel had a nice texture but devoid of seasoning and had little-to-no flavour. The hummus was watery, the dill aioli did not taste of dill and the roasted zucchini included the seeds and pith (that makes them extremely bitter and soggy btw). The apple fritter turned out to be peach and was riddled with raw dough pockets. Having spent the last few days as a support person in the mother-baby unit, takeout has been something we look forward to each day (everything has been stellar so far) and this meal has certainly been the worst of our stay by a wide margin. read more

I had dinner at Planted while passing through Hamilton, and wish there were another location closer to where I live! My husband and I shared the chickpea buffalo wings as a starter. For our entrees, he had the Planted salad, and I had the cashew mac. While the wings couldn't pass as real wings, they were still tasty, like oblong falafel balls coated in spicy buffalo sauce. I've never had cashew cheese before until I had Planted's cashew mac, and while I prefer mac and cheese with real cheese (I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian), the cashew mac was pretty good, though I did doctor it up with some hot sauce. I really liked the seared zucchini that came with the mac, and found the portion size of the dish to be very generous (I had to get a box to take my leftovers with me). My husband was also pleased with his salad. Unfortunately, we were too full to consider getting some of Planted's yummy-looking baked goods. Desserts were delicious. We ate them as an appetizer because we were so hungry and food was taking so long to come. 55 minutes between time of placing the order and getting the food (two simple bowls on their menu, nothing extravagant). The food finally showed up and was "meh". Lacked flavor, something I could easily make at home and I'm not a much of a cook. We weren't the only one doing desserts as apps and waiting long for food- it was everyone around us. As soon as the food came we asked for the check and to go boxes as we needed to get on the road and stopped here thinking it would be a quick casual lunch. In terms of the atmosphere of the restaurant...cool building, nice art, but on the day I was there there were several children running around the restaurant playing while the parents just watched. The food and variety of options is amazing! I have been here twice and the food was great both times. Vegan or otherwise, the food here is at the very top of all of my food experiences- ever. My non-vegan friend is a repeat visitor (who introduced me to it). I took my mom (not vegan) today and she was floored. Way too good. We will happily drive out from Toronto more often for their food. I've never been to Hamilton before. It's well a little rundown factory town I guess? This is part of Hamilton's charm I suppose. So this venue is next to a laundromat in a strip mall. You walk in and there is nobody to greet you at the door, you have to walk down to the ordering counter and a student-aged person will casually greet you while running around helping out another student-aged person working in the back. It has that studenty feel if you know what I mean. I was satisfied with the meal but not wow'ed. The caesar salad was pretty bland and the poutine was just OK. I ordered other things, but nothing jumped out except dessert. The chocolate cake.. blew me off my seat. Way too good. Probably loads of sugar, but once I took a bite, I didn't care I was committed. Love this restaurant. It's spacious and beautiful inside. The food is outstanding. Everything is vegan and gluten free. The menu has some fun things that you might not otherwise fun vegan let alone gluten free like a meatball sandwich made from lentils and a Caesar salad. The food is seasoned well- not overly salty or sweet like some vegan food can be. Everything Is made fresh to order. We will be back! Stopped here for a nice filling lunch. The place is inconspicuous on the plaza it's on; we had to drive around twice before we saw it from the road. They have some decent outdoor seating and also do takeout for COVID safety. Easy online ordering; call upon arrival and they'll bring out the food to your car. I had the Thai Bowl, which was very good. The tofu was a bit tough for my taste, but the veggies were fresh and the peanut sauce excellent. Also tried some fries -- very nice! The portion sizes are generous, and prices not unreasonable for a vegan place. I wish their smoothie selection were more exciting: only three fairly basic ones on the menu. read more

I've tried a couple of vegan places in other cities, was dissatisfied with the use of meat flavoured substitutes and mushy texture of food. I chose Planted in Hamilton because their menu did not have meat substitutes, rather the focus was on using natural proteins in their true form. They also have a good amount of variety of vegetables and dressing in their food to provide good flavour and texture. I was highly satisfied with the lentil burger I had. Portion sizes were very generous, food cooked well and tasted great. It also was very filling as well, and the price point quite affordable vs other vegan places. My friend had the cashew Mac, which too was very large in portion size and she enjoyed very much. Definitely would come here again. read more

First time eating here. The cleanliness of the restaurant is fantastic. No sticky tables and very neat and tidy. One small detail I appreciate is that the condiments are set up at a side bar, awesome idea as they are less prone to dirty bored hands playing with them at the table! The washrooms are clean and modern. They have counter service which is unique and I love it. This bypasses the chance of a server forgetting to order your stuff and gets your meal going right away. The woman taking our order was absolutely beaming and cheerful. You could see glancing through to the open kitchen that everyone was passionate and busy with their jobs. We had the planted nachos and the falafel pita. First off the pita has great flavour, that great mix of sour pickle and creamy sauce. Nice crisp shelled falafel but not dry. French fry perfection!! Shoestring cut and served hot, imagine that? The nachos were amazing. Lots of toppings, not a bare chip on the plate and toppings leftover at the end. I always appreciate new, inclusive vegan and gluten free eateries- this is particularly why I was excited to try Planted. I was able to visit them shortly after it opened. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgable about their food. They had no issue whatsoever to answer my many questions about particular ingredients. We ordered the jackfruit sandwich and the pasta. The jackfruit sandwich was enjoyed by my boyfriend but it was on the sweet side and the GF bun had a slightly undesirable texture. I really did not enjoy the pasta at all. The sauce was extremely sweet and overwhelmingly herby- and not in a good way. All I tasted was pungent rosemary and thyme. I wasn't able to finish my dish. The lentil meatballs were good, but I wish they had added more to the plate, since the sauce was hardly palatable. We also tried some sweets: the chocolate chip cookie and a donut. The cookie was nice and soft, but it did have a noticeable chickpea taste (I didn't mind so much). The donut was very greasy and dense- I wouldn't order it again. I'd like to give this place another try because there is indeed a great passion put into their work. I hope they take a look at some of these recommendations and make a few changes- especially with that pasta sauce! read more

I have been here multiple times now and love their food! I could eat their loaded nachos everyday- as someone who is lactose intolerant, I particularly love being able to have their "cheese" sauce. To be completely honest I really wanted to love this place. I have eaten here twice now and both times have been exceptionally underwhelming. I am not posting this to bash this place because I think that what they are attempting is much needed in the Hamilton area. Both times I ordered take away, the first time I called well in advance and arrived when I was told my food would be ready, still we had to sit and wait for 20 minutes. On my most recent visit, I waited 40 minutes for take away. I would have been happy to wait if the food was worth it. But it was unremarkable. I ordered the Thai rice bowl, which for some reason is $12 on the printed menu but $13 on the chalk board menu, and the chickpea wings. The rice bowl featured what seemed like dry, day old rice and very few pieces of tofu. As for the "wings" please call it was it is, falafel tossed in franks red hot sauce and ranch dipping sauce...gross. I will say, their baked goods are fine, we got what we expected. The sugar cookie was nice, and the peanut butter brownie was also okay. Hopefully, this review is as a balancing point to all of the "incredible" reviews this place has had. We tried many things on the menu on our two trials: Thai bowl, meatball sub, Mac N Cheeze, Mediterranean Bowl, coleslaw, and several baked goods. They were all just okay...nothing as heavenly as many patrons have described. We likely will not be back, especially if we can get at bare minimum, similar quality food at a faster pace. read more

Ive been to Planted in Hamilton twice now. First time for bunch and the second for lunch both times with my partner. The brunch food we received was perfect and we love that there is yet another vegan restaurant we can both enjoy. My partner just went gluten free so this place seemed Perfect to her. For brunch we also ordered their loose leaf teas to drink after eating which were super hot so while we waited for them to cool down we went to wash our hands. When we returned to our table the teas and the business cards/flyers we collected earlier were gone. All that was left were our jackets. In hind sight we should have said something considering we barely had a sip and we paid 6$ for them. We felt very rushed at that point and just wanted to leave. Our second visit was pleasant except their debit card machine wasn't working like planned and we had to find another method of payment. The cutlery we received was kind of disgusting. We asked for a trade for cleaner ones and we did receive CLEANER ones but they weren't properly clean. We ended up wiping them down ourselves. One more complaint would be that the tomato sauce on their lentil meatball pasta dish was definitely not homemade but bought. Over all the food will definitely bring us back but the service and attention to details could be better. read more

I had the Cashew Mac which came with delicious large side of BBQ green beans. For and extra $2 I got the BBQ Jackfruit . Delicious. We also got the Chickpea Chicken Wings. Fantastic. Meatball Sub was not great but I don't expect to love everything. The atmosphere is good with candles in the evening. One of the servers introduced me to the menu as I have sensitivities to certain foods and she was very understanding and patient. I will start by saying I had very high expectations for Planted based on what I had heard from word of mouth. Today, My friend and I decided to give it a shot. He ordered the lentil meatball sandwich, I got the cashew Mac, and to start we shared the maple mustard chickpea bites. On a high note, the chickpea bites were great! They were served fairly quickly and were yummy. Those, I would actually recommend. We came in on a Wednesday afternoon so we were the only people in the restaurant until another couple came in about 10 mins after us. We waited for our mains...and waited...the other couple got served... we still waited... until eventually about 40 mins had passed and our parking was going to run out so we had to ask for our food to go. It almost seemed as though our chit had been lost on the board even though we were the only people in there... after about 5 mins we got our food in take out containers and headed to the car to eat. The lentil meatball sandwich I think was the most disappointing. It was smaller than my fist and so gross my friend actually threw it out. My cashew Mac on the other hand was edible... not fantastic but I mean it could be worse? It also didn't come with grilled green beans like the menu stated. Instead it came with zucchini and onions which I found to be an odd combo. Overall, the aesthetic of the place was cute, very "instagramable", staff were kind, but food was not good in the slightest.
