Love our local bookstores in Healdsburg! Levin is conveniently located right on the Healdsburg Plaza, so we often pop in to browse before or after going to dinner. And it's a go-to stop for gift purchasing (we've purchased board books from here to send to friends who've had babies!). They sell so many treasures! Of course they sell books, but they also sell vinyl records, local art (custom dog paintings caught our eye!!!), games, and more. On our recent visit, we enjoyed looking through their many board games. Need to add a new one to our collection soon. Before the age of the internet, people were forced to read complete sentences without acronyms or emojis. Sort of like the arcane sentence above. Don't despair, Levin also has an art gallery and sells records and CDs. There are many pages of writing in folders called books. These 'books' are placed on tables and shelves according to category, with signs that require even more reading. Levin's is a wonderland of great books, and so inviting. A clerk spent 15 minutes with us giving useful suggestions for our summer reads collection. There truly is something for everyone here. Except wine. It's good to buy a couple of books for a long plane ride, or other situations where your cell battery died & you might otherwise be forced to observe your surroundings or interact with another human. LOL Please support this local family business before Amazon finds out they exist. read more

Nice vibe for browsing and decent selection! This is my favorite type of bookstore--large used sections, a few tables of new books, and a smattering of other offerings like vinyl and cds. I appreciate that they have dedicated mystery and sci fi/fantasy sections, and their fiction had a really diverse mix of classics and contemporary lit fic. The new books didn't feel super super fresh, but I found some more obscure titles that looked interesting. Even with lovely high ceilings the interior gives a nice cozy bookstore vibe. It would've been nice if the bookseller greeted us or asked if we needed any help but that is not uncommon for indie bookstores. They were very friendly at checkout. read more

Stopped in during a short stay in Healdsburg and 100% loved the vibe of this bookstore. It actually smells like books when you walk in, which (weirdly) is not true of all bookstores. Also just a very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. I found so many books I'd heard great things about, so I have to wonder if someone who stocks the shelves is in tune with BookTok and/or BookTube. Or just has really good taste. Alas, none of my books were there, but tbf, my books are seldom in stores. ;-P Overall: a delight and I would definitely stop in again if/when I am in town. read more

There aren't many stores that sell records in Healdsburg. I stopped in Levin & Co and browed through their new record section. I purchased a new Beach Boys record album containing 2 vinyl records. It was a few more dollars than ordering from Amazon. I didn't mind since it supports a local business. I'll return to look at their used records. read more

How many towns the size of Healdsburg can have two bookstores on the downtown square? Levin & Co. has a great vibe ... at least it feels to me like what an independent bookstore should be. I got the feeling that the customers were both locals and tourists. Books are well displayed. Unlike some bookstores, this one is not overcrowded which makes for easier browsing. Wine tasting and eating meant I didn't have a lot of time for book browsing. But I will keep Levin & Co. on my list of places to visit when SIP is over and we are able to again visit Healdsburg. Love this place!!! Everyone is nice, they allow dogs, and there is an art gallery upstairs. They also have board games and records. Some reviews mention that their selection is smaller than that of other book stores, but I actually love how cozy and curated it is. Browsing here was much, much more interesting to me than at the larger stores! I bought two books and my husband bought a painting from a local artist. Will definitely be back. read more

Great little book store. My favorite thing to do on my day off is go to a bookstore, grab a cup golf joe and browse through the endless books offered. The owners provide just that here and to top it off, they are super friendly and have great book recommendations. Such a charming bookstore! I walked in and gasped, then asked my partner, "Am I in heaven?" It's so open but still covered, wall-to-wall, in books! There is so much variety, but organized in an intuitive way. I didn't have a chance to interact with the staff but from afar they seemed engaged and friendly (they were assisting another customer). This is on our permanent rotation when in Healdsburg. It is one of our very favorite bookstores, not only for their well organized shear volume of inventory, but for the expertise of the friendly helpful staff. You step in, onto the old wood plank floor and into an entirely different world, far away from the hustle & bustle outside. It's almost impossible to leave Levin & Co bookstore without buying something. I love their suggestion tables! I always end up buying a book from their recommends. Their children's section is also very nice. It's not very big but they have a great selection for all ages and my daughter always finds something new that she wants to read. They also have a lovely selection of books on local homes and architecture and also books on wineries and wines. I can easily browse books here for hours! I have never been a particular fan of Levin & Company. I used to go in when I couldn't find what I was looking for at Toyon and didn't feel like waiting for an order. Sometimes I check out their used books rack outside, as I have gotten a few really good deals that way. (Actually, that's how I picked up the paperback version of Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay.") I have always found Levin & Co. to be a little overpriced and unfriendly. The atmosphere has never seemed very welcoming to me and I'm not sure if it's because it's usually a little cold in there or it's really quiet with the exception of the creaking floors or what. I do know that I can remember the staff being friendly only on two occasions despite having gone in there dozens upon dozens of times. They have CD's, a decent sized section on the Wine Country, cooking, fiction, and travel books. If you head up the stairs, there's a nice little art gallery appropriately named Upstairs Art Gallery (http://www.upstairsartgallerysite.com) where you can view local work. Pop in if you're looking for something specific or if you'd like to pick up a book on the Wine Country. Bookstores are hard to come by where I live. That's why it was such a treat to walk into this quiant, little bookstore. I loved the wooden floors and the quiet power of the books as you walk in. New releases are strategically placed at the front of the store (naturally). Prices are a little expensive but what else do you expect from an independent book store. Keith C. can never resist the lure of an independent bookstore, so when we wandered by Levin and Co yesterday, I knew we'd be hanging out for a while. Not that I minded at all, since I can always use a new cookbook or two. We made our way through pretty much every section in the store. They had a small but wide variety of books--perfect for a morning of discovering new reads. I was particularly impressed by how up-to-date the travel and tech books were, since even chain stores have a hard time clearing last year's books off the shelves. No Adobe CS4 or 2010 Lonely Planet guides here! After an hour, we headed to the checkout. Keith struck up a conversation with the guy at the register about the stuffed Michigan J Frog sitting on the counter (exchanging a few notes of "Hello! Ma Baby" in the process), and I complimented their awesome book selection. We might have chatted with him about the store a bit more, were it not for the line forming behind us. Total damage for five books? ~$140. Expensive? Maybe, but paying full retail is a small price to pay to support a local business and keep bookstores around just a little bit longer. In honor of Thanksgiving 2017, I'm appreciating my favorite businesses in Healdsburg. I don't want to take them for granted. What I love most about Levin & Co: They are open late enough that an after dinner stroll around the plaza can include a warm and engrossing perusal of the latest and greatest books and CDs. It is so nice to see the owners behind the desk whenever we go in. Friendly, smart, knowledgeable, and always in a good mood. They welcome browsers in a hands-off way, but are always ready to answer a question or engage in conversation if you want. It has a comfortable, spacious ambiance. There is an art gallery upstairs. They stock the best of every category, and of course will order anything they don't already have. I'm so grateful to have a family-owned independent bookstore that's been in Healdsburg as long as I have. Thank you! read more

Levin & Co. is probably my favorite bookstore, competing with Powell's City of Books in Portland (though the comparison is unfair, as they are so very different). Powell's is awesome in scope, of course, but Levin has the personal touch that large places like Barnes & Nobel, and yes, even Powell's, lack. It makes me sad that people felt the folks at Levin were unfreindly; I've lived in Healdsburg for 26 years, and I've been going into Levin since I was a wee one, and not once have I experienced bad vibes from the folks behind the counter. I find it easy to browse, as well--much easier than Copperfield's, the other bookstore in town--and that's my favorite thing to do in a bookstore. Rarely do I go in knowing exactly what I want (and when I do, Levin always has it, and all I have to do is tell Aaron what I'm looking for, and he knows EXACTLY where it is), but I always come out with something I had no idea I needed--in that wonderful, hidden-jewel manner. As for the price, yes, Levin charges you the sticker price. It's a local, independent bookstore in a small town. They can't afford to discount 30-40%, and I'm totally OK with it. Time is valuable too, and not having to wait 5-7 days for Amazon to ship is worth paying the actual $15 for my Alison Weir books, or getting the River Cottage Meat Book in time for my boyfriend's birthday. This was your standard decent bookstore. They had a nice spread of books and a few other fund things. My girl and I browsed around quite a bit without buying anything but had a nice time. The store is well-lit with plenty of room. Not sure why other reviewers are bashing the lady at the counter. She wasn't fall over friendly, but she was still polite. There was a nice book selection (especially kids) of slightly older titles and less mainstream which I really liked. Book prices were a bit more but I imagine with the location retailers need to compete somehow. The art gallery upstairs was kinda cool. read more

Levin&Company is a fascinating little nook. Unlike many bookstores, they have an array of vinyl records, an abundance of CD albums... and an upstairs art gallery. For such a small space, they have amazing variety. If you're looking for books about the history of the Oscars, science fiction entertainment from the SyFy Channel, or Tolstoy novellas, this is the ideal place to go. Yes, with 3 customers in the shop, the older woman working behind the counter was CLIPPING HER NAILS right by the register. It's gross when people do this on the subway, but at work? On holiday I purchased $200 of books and asked them to ship them to me. It wasn't a problem when they took the money + some shipping charges. It's 22 days later and I haven't seen a thing. I can confirm that they were not friendly, I can also add, they may not have the customer in mind even with a large transaction. read more

Levin and Company is a small- to medium-sized bookstore with an excellent selection of books for its size. You can always find an especially good selection of new books and bestsellers at the main tables, in both hardback and soft cover. They have a good selection of fiction and non-fiction alike, and a fabulous children's selection. If mystery is your cup of tea, you will find a wide selection. They also have plenty of travel books, large-format coffee table books with beautiful images, as well as building/landscaping and cookbooks. In addition there are plenty of CDs in many genres (keep in mind it's not a music store though) and some greeting cards. The entire store is well-organized, well-lit, and comfortable (and I LOVE the creaking hardwood floors!). Levin and Company is a new-book bookstore. If you come in expecting a funky and idiosyncratic used bookstore, you will be disappointed. Sorry, but that's just not very Healdsburg (unfortunately). Get over it! Go there for gifts for yourself and others, and to keep up on current books. Speaking of current books, the owners and staff are extremely well-read people who are totally up on what's happening in the book world. They love talking about books, and I have always found them to be entirely friendly--but like any good book store staff, they will not get in your face. Go ask them questions or strike up a conversation about books if you want to interact. PLUS: they will always special order books for you, and call you when they arrive. They even wrap. Oh, and how could I forget! Check out the gorgeous and quirky animal portraits on the wall, done by a local artist. Ask about them too! As a side note: I have to say, I'm surprised at the negative reviews here. I know, I know, "not Toyon." Anyone who has lived in Healdsburg for a long time would be familiar with the Toyon vs. Levin and Co. faction warfare. (The stores themselves did not, to my mind, encourage this.) Such a wonderful place! Good selection, nice layout, you can pleasantly get lost in all the various areas, really helpful and knowledgeable and offered good assistance. In a world full of corporate Barnes and Noble type bookstores, this is much more personal, intimate and people who enjoy what they do, not like the employees of the above mentioned place as well as any huge stock driven company. I love this little local, independently-owned book store. Aaron is always available to help me pick out a new book, and remembers from one browse to the next what I like to read and will offer suggestions based on that. This is SO refreshing in an era in which big-box and chain bookstore employees seem to have almost no actual book knowledge whatsoever, let alone the ability for recommendation. The rest of the family and staff are always perfectly pleasant, not at all pushy which I appreciate, and are always willing to answer any off-the-wall questions or requests I have. This is my favorite bookstore. They have a wonderful fiction selection, with stuff that you can't find even at the much larger chain stores. It's all quality stuff- they don't carry the dreck. The selection of music is great, too. They carry a lot of classic rock and roll, blues, and jazz and a small but good selection of international music. I have always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Even if I can't remember the title or the author, they can usually track down the book I am looking for just by whatever clue I can remember. What a wonderful place. read more

My wife and I have been avid fans of Levin & Co for more than 20 years. We're particularly impressed that they have been able to stock such a diverse and comprehensive array of books for so long because their customer base is much smaller than many out-of-area visitors imagine. The town population of Healdsburg, despite the weekend flood of folks seekling "the country life," is only around 11,000. As for the friendly-unfriendly conversation, I don't want a bookseller jumping in front of me before I'm ready to purchase or, more likely, ask about this or that author. Whenever we are ready to check out, the service throughout our more than 200 visits since the early '90s has been uniformly polite and professional. read more

Levin & Company is one of the BEST mid-sized bookstores I've ever been in. I've found them to be very helpful and friendly and very community minded. They have lots of great details on the featured non-fiction books they sell. AND will help track down hard to find books. They have a smaller used book section that has treasures. My wife and I have been huge fans of Levin & Company as long as I can remember. We are also Amazon customers, but typically wait to shop at Levin to support this real business with people who know their books. We can rely on their recommendations no matter the category. My sense is that others reviewers reactions are a mis -read of a laid back, but super helpful and interested owner and staff. Some of my best presents have been gift certificates. There is also a tremendous selection of Sonoma County History; pictorial, vineyard, railroad, etc. that cannot be found anywhere else in real time.
