Prior to the Glencairn home my mother resided in two different assisted living facilities and none were as caring and compassionate as any of Rusinder's homes. Rusinder helped me through the whole process of choosing a place where my mom would receive excellent care and, while she's definitely on the declining side of her dementia, she's been loved, respected and well cared for with the amazing staff. I'm fully aware of the turnover of staff in this industry but these homes employ people who have stuck around for a long time, I think the consistency of staff brings the level of care to a whole new level. The small number of people in each home makes it easy to visit and the atmosphere is more home-like. I feel sure that Kendra's care extended her life because she personalized everything about her care, getting her up to keep walking, and learning and addressing her needs. I was told that most of the regular staff was out due to Covid related causes so that is likely why the staff was primarily temps. This facility regularly uses a temp service so it may not be very uncommon. The residents feel the effects of temp servers who may have never been a server and it's their very first time being thrown into it if you have a family member expressing concerns or are visiting family, just know all servers are likely temps and it's probably their first time ever being in the facility. Patience. Despite the companies staffing issues causing longer wait times, the dishes were routinely dirty. Cups were murky and had food spots, and other dishes weren't consistently clean as well. The quality of food in terms of taste could have been better as well as many residents were not very impressed (with lunch, breakfast was fine). I had no concerns about the cleanliness of the kitchen and about food being safe to eat so that's a great plus. My dealings with Sandy, Nita, Rachel and Nico were outstanding! They always made me feel like they'd known me forever! Nico is the hardest working maintenance man I've ever seen and while it was my Mom's decision not to go there it had nothing to do with the facility or staff. This decision had to be made by her and at the end of the day she chose a location with a larger footprint for the room. They approach her care with a perfect blend of professional expertise and genuine compassion, consistently going above and beyond to help her regain her strength and independence. If you can visit, you will find it to be beautifully appointed without being fussy. My mother went from a townhouse to a one bedroom apartment and it was perfect for her. The weak link to the whole operation is the dining room, and my experience is that most assisted living properties struggle in this area. The dining room is not carpeted and so quite noisy for the residents. Food service can be uneven and the food was often not very hot! But I found that if my mother asked to have something fixed, the servers were always kind and accommodating! My mother passed away one year ago. I was with her along with hospice, which they allowed to take care of her in her apartment. I found the staff of The Oaks to be so accommodating and concerned. I wish my mother could have enjoyed living there for many more years!
