We stopped by while in the city for a quick visit to good old Ernest, Jim Varney. Finding his grave was easy enough, and if we'd had more time before they were going to close the gates for the night, I'd have liked to walk around and explore. It is lovely along the lines of Cave Hill in Louisville. But it was getting late and we had to go. Which proved more difficult that necessary. Unless we wanted to ignore one-way road signs in the cemetery... Google maps took me to roads that didn't exist, gates that had been removed completely and walled up...and we had an adventure just trying to exit the cemetery. But if you've got the time, and inclination...it is gorgeous here with some notable folks' graves to visit. read more

This is truly a gorgeous and historic cemetery especially in the fall and spring. The burial place of Henry Clay, John Cabell Breckinridge, John Hunt Morgan and the Todd family(think Mary Todd Lincoln) is astounding that so many people of note reside here. You can wander around indefinitely admiring the headstones and mausoleums in this beautiful arboretum and cemetery. I forgot that cemeteries closed and this one definitely does. The front gate is locked at closing time. That's a bummer. I did get the opportunity to enjoy the front and looked around from there, but I'm definitely not going to trespass these days. Lexington Cemetery is a private, non-profit 170-acre cemetery that is open to the public from 8am to 5pm. Established in 1848, there are more than 64,000 interments including Congresspeople, Senators and Generals from both the Confederacy and the Union, and Jim Varney (you'll know him as Ernest from a number of eponymous films). I don't have any family members to visit, but the cemetery is open to just walk around. There are a small number of parking spots near the entrance, and occasional pull-over spots throughout the twisty rounds which innervate the cemetery. It is a lovely spot that has some historical significance, but also a wide variety of plant life. The roads are a little dodgy, but the grounds are always very well manicured when I visit. read more

This is a popular cemetery here for Lexington. It has a lot of local celebrities and different Families that are buried here. We drove through and looked at some of the architecture in the different gravestones. You could tell that he has been here for many years and is filled with many memories and family heirlooms. One of most serene places in Lexington. Even as traffic bustles down Leestown road, the quietness fills you as you enter. The road noises seem to fall away as you walk deep into the shade of the trees. You can look back at all of those people that came before you and know that you are standing in a piece of history. The grounds are beautiful. There are large statues and ornate mausoleums along the narrow roads to the different sections. As a kid, I always thought it would be neat to hang out in the ones that are the size of houses. (I'm over that phase) I don't personally have family here so I try to be as respectful as possible. I have noticed that there are now a ton of pokestops and pokegyms so I imagine that has brought a bit more traffic in to the area. If you go for that reason remember to be respectful. Even if you are going to meditate, reflect or learn about history, try to keep in mind some people are visiting their loved ones. read more

Dream Girl and I were cruising the historic neighborhoods of Lexington looking at the many lovely houses when we stumbled upon Lexington Cemetery. We like old cemeteries so this was right up our alley. I have seen many cemeteries around the world and this is one of the prettiest of them all. Cemeteries in the 19th Century were often designed as parks where families would go to stroll around and picnic. Even in my mid-century youth I remember Nashvillians who would go to the cemetery on Sunday afternoons to see Grandpa and Grandma's graves and to just get out and walk around. Lexington Cemetery is your place if you want to do that. The old-growth trees, ponds, and plantings make it a wonderful park as well as a cemetery. We visited the Henry and Lucretia Clay monument and the nearby grave of John Hunt Morgan, Confederate notable and Lexington native. Not to be missed is the enormous American Basswood, over 230 years old, that stands near the Clay monument. I am on the friends board of the old Nashville City Cemetery so will echo other reviewers who remind you to not park on the grass. read more

Founded back in 1849 when cemeteries were built more as gardens or parks for people to enjoy rather than just for burials. It's 170 acres of pure serenity on Main Street / Leestown Road right on the edge of downtown. This cemetery with it's winding roads and hills has little hidden gardens and ponds to find if you love to wander. There are two large ponds with benches to feed the ducks and geese who remain year round. This cemetery is a wonder during every season. Winter is magical. Spring is a Tulip explosion of color. If you're a photographer this is a must see. The many statues, some marble others bronze, are beautiful. The bronze angel across from the Memorial Arbor is magnificent. She is often holding something that coincides with the season. You'll see runners and joggers but everyone is very respectful and avoids areas where funerals are being conducted. Above all, be respectful to the visitors and the cemetery itself. I do volunteer photography for Find A Grave (I also have ancestors there) so I am in the cemetery on a weekly basis and have never had a problem. Many cemeteries can be dangerous. I had my car broken into at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. While I was still within sight of it. Never had a problem here and don't worry about keeping my car in sight (although I do carry mace because you can never be too careful. I'm retired military so I am very mindful of my surroundings.) This cemetery is also much more beautiful and peaceful than Bonaventure. Be sure to stop and pick up a map outside the office. As often as I go there I still end up using it :) If your looking for the historical grave sites use the map and keep an eye out, there are signs along the roads pointing the way. If you have the chance you should stop and at the very least drive through. There is a lot of history here and it can be felt. Be sure to keep an eye on the time. During the week it closes at five (or 5:30) on the weekends at four. You don't want to get yourself locked in. read more

Lexington Cemetery is a must-see in early spring (end of March) with the Cherry Blossom's blooming! It will be busy there with photography.

This is one if the most beautiful places in Lexington. I remember as a kid, taking field trips here and also visiting the graves of several family members. It wasn't until I grew up that I recognized the true beauty of so many acres. In the spring time, there is beautiful tulips in the garden area. You can feed the ducks around the large pond area too. Henry Clay and many other famous Kentuckians are buried there. Over the years, they've opened more plots and expanded the property. They have added a mausoleum too. They close the gates rather early, so do be sure to check into the hours, so that you won't get locked in. read more

This is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever visited. There are so many different types of trees and flowers planted throughout. This is where we gathered the leaves for my son's "leaf project" when he was young. It proved to be a fun task with the many different leaves we gathered. Also, there are several notable people buried here including Henry Clay (whose home, Ashland, is just miles down the road, actor Jim Varney, Lucille Markey of Calumet Farm fame and Levi Todd, father of Mary Todd Lincoln (whose family home is even closer than Ashland) to name a few. It's truly a place of serene beauty. The keepers of the cemetery are very particular about the upkeep of the place in regards to artificial flowers, items left at the gravesite, planting etc. The result is a very nice looking area. read more

Disclaimer: I came here as a tourist and not as part of a funeral party, so I can't speak about them in regards to funeral arrangements. This was listed as a tourist destination in Lexington so I decided to check it out. Several famous dead people from the Civil War are buried here. There's also a huge memorial to Senator Henry Clay. The grounds are kept beautifully and everything is manicured to perfection. There are really old tombstones here and its fun to note the different styles that were popular in the old days. My only gripe is that it is really hard to locate the graves of the famous dead here because the map is so general, and there's no pictures of what their headstones look like. We found the Lincoln family plot and the Henry Clay memorial, but that's it because it was soooooo hot that we couldn't stand wandering outside searching for the tombstones. read more

Beautiful and well maintained. There are lots of historic bits to see such as the area National Cemetery and the Henry Clay monument. They don't mind people driving through to take in the sights but make sure not to park on the grass or picnic there. read more
