We've shopped here from time to time. Nice little herb shop on a good business street in Berkeley. Prices are high though. Sometimes... because we've wanted a certain herb or tincture timely we've purchased anyway. Last week my husband was looking for a specific herb. We were in the car and didn't mind driving around to different shops. I was looking online as he was driving here and there. We remembered Lhasa Karnak. My husband went into the store and found the herb. He said "Great. Hold on. I'll let you know in a bit". Woman said we'll just keep it here for you so whenever... just come by". When he came back to the car, I had found the EXACT same herb by the exact same company he had found; only mine was for TWICE AS MUCH PRODUCT FOR SEVEN DOLLARS LESS. AND I could get it OVERNIGHT. We were thrilled. I said "So let's go". He said he wanted to tell the woman he didn't need it after all. He is a very polite man... So...yes he went in and politely thanked her for her time and showed her the difference. This woman tried everything NOT to look at the huge discrepancy and finally just stopped engaging him in a very rude sort of manner. So... I get it. She was busted. Nobody likes bad news. This really rattled my husband though and it took a minute for him to feel better after the experience. Who needs that in their life? We know Berkeley is expensive. We live here too. The price difference however was too much to ignore. I just want to make buyers aware of HOW MUCH MORE expensive the products are than they should be. Not going back. Lesson learned. read more

As of last night I have went to this location a total of four times. One once has an employee been friendly. I took my brother in for his birthday to buy a few items. The man who helped me was drier then the dessert. He didn't seem at all interested in helping me or my brother. My brother got a call from China, he couldn't understand the language barrier and his voice raised, the store clerk asked him to go outside. I'm unsure why, we were the only people in the store. After the call he came back in. As he approached me the man gave him the strangest stare. I asked for one additional item and it seemed as though the employee was annoyed. Being that 3 outta 4 times I've came here the staff have all acted strange I won't be back. We live in Vallejo, but made a special trip to Berkeley to visit this shop. I'm pretty new to tea, and was very excited to visit a shop that had a good variety of teas and herbs. We browsed for a few minutes before approaching the counter for assistance. As I said, I'm a relatively new tea drinker. I use tea to brew kombucha, and I'm the process, developing a love of tea as well. I also love using herbs as medicine. However, because I don't know a lot, I have questions about what herbs are good for what, etc. The person helping us today was really rude. I asked what teas or herbs might be helpful for anxiety and insomnia. She suggested valerian root. My wife said her doctor recommended against valerian root because of potential interaction with her prescription meds. After that, the person helping us stopped answering our questions and was really short with us. I knew two items that I wanted, and asked for those. I also wanted to get some pu'erh cakes. I asked her how much each cake weighs, and she replied I'm an irritated voice, "I don't know! Do you want to see what an ounce looks like?" Before I could answer, she put several cakes in a bag, weighed them, and said, "That's about an ounce." I didn't ask to see an ounce. I wanted to know how much each little cake weighed. If she could weigh out an ounce of cakes, she could have weighed a single cake and given me a straight answer to my simple question, without the attitude. Decided then that I just wanted to complete the transaction, take my tea, and return back to Vallejo. I will not return to this store. Yes, they have a great selection of herbs and teas in bulk. Their prices are reasonable. But the customer service makes me feel as though they don't want my business. That's fine. I will give the business one more chance, but next time, I will visit the Shattuck store and hopefully find a more professional staff. read more

However if I can give this a 0 star I 110% would, the staff is absolutely terrible it might as well be a self check out store. Both staff members were super rude & didn't know their own products.. Lhasa Karnak just lost a loyal customer. Came in to buy some oils and glass containers, but found the customer service so off-putting that I almost walked out. It's just too bad. I found myself apologizing over and over because the woman behind the counter appeared to be irritated and impatient with me, which in the long run made me resentful (wait, why am I the one apologizing, I kept thinking). After dropping $50, I asked for an itemized receipt, to which the woman replied, "there are price tags on ALMOST everything you bought." Um, great. So can I still have my itemized receipt? She barked at me this time, telling me that I could take her scribbled out piece of scratch paper that had a bunch of numbers, some of which were scratched out and some illegible. Horrible customer service and energy. I'm never greeted or feel welcomed when I've come in. You walk in to the staff talking and laughing with each other and they literally growl and get quiet when you enter the store. No welcome, no how are you, no nothing. The one male I've dealt with just stares at me until I start my order. All of the staff are irritated when they have to service you and answer questions. Oh, maaaaaaaan, this store. This rating isn't for their product, but for the "service." I've been to the Shattuck location many times for my culinary herbs and spices. Great prices, great product. But perhaps THE most frustrating experience owing to staff attitude and inefficiency. You can stand there for a loooooooooong time as the customer before you hems and haws about what they need -- would it kill the staff to ring someone up who has everything they need while the undecided customer continues to ponder their needs? Also, I've heard some staff give really bad, harmful advice to customers about medicinal herbs (I've certified in the study and practice of both Western and Chinese herbs -- the person in question had NO idea what she was talking about). Bad idea, guys. Way to get shut down by the FDA! Now for the pandemic: I was so glad you can order over the website and they'd ship or you can pick up if you're local. I thought, "Oh, I'm going to do this from now on, even post-pandemic (if there's such a thing), and skip the attitudinal staff!" No such luck. I place the order on a Saturday, get my email confirmation. Said I'd hear back when the order is ready for pick up. Monday rolls around, Tuesday, Wednesday. Crickets. Email them to ask when the order might ostensibly be ready -- crickets. Email again on Thursday. CRICKETS. (WTF, guys? Too chill on your own CBD to answer innocuous email?) Finally, my neighbor decided to phone. (I'd ordered some stuff for her as well). She said she could hear them eyeroll over the phone when she inquired. She went to pick up the order. (Never got a response to my email, and never got an email notification for pick up....) She brings it back. YAYYYYYYY!!!! It's missing a spice that I paid for. Should I phone them and inquire? I think not. I'd rather drink Drano. Guys, lay off the CBD or the passionflower, the hops, the valerian. You need to be alert to run and operate your store. Have to my update my review. Just to be clear, my prior review RE the shitty ass service was for the Shattuck location, not the one on telegraph. My mistake. I really really have grown to love this place. They have like a bajillion--maybe more--herbs and spices you can buy in bulk for super cheap. I make my own loose leaf tea and they have absolutely anything I need for whatever my needs may be. I've gotten the peppermint--organic from oregon, it's amazing--dandelion, dandelion root, fennel seed, and so forth. All top quality stuff and decently priced. They also have a ton of supplements and tools for tea brewing and Yerba mate making! Awesome place read more

I was visiting Berkeley and the last thing that would come to my mind is herbs or herbal medicines, but since the pretty factor push more than the need in many cases, my 2 girlfriends and I sniffed something good was in there. So I got my great deal of licorice root, that I like to eat as is, raw and dry (although also like licorice tea). It is not easy to find this root in many stores unless they are specialized and I was very glad to see them displayed there and at a cheap price. Both the licorice root and the style of the store (like an old apothecary) reminded me my childhood in Spain. We also got beauty goodies like water rose and Moroccan clay to have a DIY facial session. Not that the prices in that department are cheaper than the ones you can find at Indian stores, but not bad the amount of products they carry. read more

My girlfriend got nerve damage in her hand from Highland Hospital sloppily giving her an IV when she had kidney stones for the 1st time. Avoid this store! I bought my daughter a henna kit for about $24 at Lhasa Karnak. It turned out that the kit contents were not complete. Lhasa Karnak will not give us a refund; only store credit. I spoke to the owner, and said there was nothing else I wanted in the store. It doesn't feel right to me that if I buy what I think is a functional kit, and it is incomplete, that I should then have to cast about and purchase herbs I don't want, or scented products, or whatever. I asked how he would felt if he bought a pair of Nike tennis shoes, got home and found the heel had a slice in it, and was told he then could browse through their shirt or short collection, when what he had wanted was shoes. The store has great bulk herbs (more than you can imagine), interesting herbal teas they mix in house, essential oils, supplements / hair care / delicious smelling candles - that provide a lot of things that I know are high quality. I've had them ship my mother in San Diego elderberries and echinacea so she can make elderberry syrup at home, and my sister in Southern California also made an order to ship ingredients so she could make her own tonic water. I love the candles they sell there, the candles have really good essential oil scents to them which give me such comfort while shelter-in-place. The good: I have been coming to this place for several years because I trust the quality of their essential oils. Oils are medicine and I'm not searching for the lowest price I'm looking for the best quality that I can count on. They offer the best variety of oils and many come in different sizes. You get what you pay for and I understand that when I come here. They also offer herbs and supplements you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The bad: I would have given this place a higher rating but the customer service is like a crap shoot. You never who will be working there or what kind of mood they will be in. This includes the owner who can be grouchy. It's a good idea to know what you want because the novice will not be treated with open arms or given much advice despite many employees being extremely knowledgeable. I also feel like I've been judged on my appearance (not liberal enough for their taste). The ugly: They need to seriously update their cash registers. They total your order by hand and use a tax chart taped to their register. More than once I've recounted my order and the total they charged me was wrong, but not by enough to make the trip and fight for parking to collect. read more

I don't know why everyone is complaining that the staff aren't nice. They are not there to entertain you or hold your hand. I've gotten great advice on preparing my herbs correctly. You would think that an owner of a place like this would be very enlightened - I mean what else inspires someone to open a store so full of eastern paraphernalia? Well, looks can be deceiving. We bought some incense from here at, what looked like, a very high price (appx $8). We then meandered onto another store on Telegraph that was much more authentic, like one of those semi-chaotic stores you find in Chinatown or even in Tibet itself where you have to duck under flags at times to see some items; the same incense ended up being $2. We walked back to Lhasa-Karnak cashier to return the highway robbery incense, stating the reason why: their unbelievable markup. The store owner/manager all of a sudden appeared out of the woodwork to "take over" from the cashier and tell us that "we don't take returns here, just exchanges", her eyes, her energy, full of venom. I don't know about you, but it seems like this store's purpose feels like it is more to maintain the lifestyle of a North Berkeley selfish woman that likes to give lip service to eastern thought, than a person that really takes pride in expanding eastern thought and culture. I suggest that we all stop supporting this nasty, nasty owner, and enlighten her about about karma. read more

This review covers only the "cooking spice" aspect of Lhasa Karnak. I'm always reluctant to post a "meh" review, as most folks seem to love this place. Oh well, it's only an opinion so take it with a grain of salt ...er, Spanish paprika. We stopped in on a Saturday evening. The "other" nearby spice store had closed at 5pm, so after putting on our Yelp goggles, we were led to Lhasa Karnak. Hoping to talk to some real spice/herb freaks, I was nonplussed by the passivity of the staff. A half-dozen dangling spice conversation threads later, it was apparent that an attempt to discuss anything more exotic than Mrs. Dash - or sugar & spice - was not gonna happen. After picking out the cooking spices I'd been eyeing and asking about containers, they rummaged around for a bottle and came up with a decent herb bottle for $1.50. Prices seemed OK. In looking around, I could see that the selection of healing herbs, oils, barks and other homeopathic type offerings certainly looked extensive. Pluses: Located on Berkeley's colorful Telegraph Ave, about 4 blocks from the campus. Open til 7pm on Saturdays. Decent selection of herbs and spices for many ethnic dishes. Lots of holistic oils, herbs, creams, etc. On the other hand: Neither of the two staff waiting on me cared to discuss much about their products. The owner, who buys all the products for the store, works there only intermittently (according to the staff). Parking? Are ya kidding me? Hint: Try parking a block or two away on Dwight and walking around the corner to the shop. read more

I love the space, and I've bought many herbs and spices that were of good quality from them, but holy mother of pearl DO NOT BUY THEIR BULK HENNA OR INDIGO. The henna was gritty and poorly sifted, and never reached any kind of smooth consistency. Once mixed up, I waited for 6 hours and checked for dye release. Nothing. 12 hours: nothing. 24 hours: nothing. On the second day, I tossed it and counted my losses. The indigo at least produced a pale blue-gray dye, but I noted that the powder was an extremely anemic pale green compared to greener powders I've bought in the past that produced strong blue hues. The moral of the story here is probably to stick with buying bulk herbs that have a high turn over rate. read more

Quality. When it comes to buying dried herbs that I have no chance in hell of growing myself, I want quality comparable to what mother would have done. After all, I'm brewing and stewing these things to help with anxiety, no need to burden myself with uncertainty. That's a bit of a general statement. I should clarify by saying that immaculate conception is more likely to occur than any plant to flourish under my care (with the exception of orchids). I can't grow useful things. Yesterday I went to an herb shop in SF. I was excited. I bought little paper bags of stuff. I thought I got a good deal since each little satchel was about $2. BF made a wise comment that the jars did not look superbly impressive. I didn't know. I was green. I was a novice. Today, I went to Lhasa Karnak with my father. The store was cleaner and more organized than that of yesterday. It did not have that lazy hippie pseudo-clean feeling. Instead it was an Eastern Medicine Clean feeling. Less alternative lifestyle, more health and medicine. Less witchy. More Apothocary. The jars behind the counter hold some of the freshest, best preserved ingredients I have ever seen. The smell of scullcap was potent as though it had just been dried last week. The color of the herbs was bright green and held its shape. Surprisingly, herbs and sashimi have a lot in common. If the herbs look dusty and do not hold a clean fiberus line, it's old. If the color is not vibrant, it's old. If there is a lot of filler (leaves where there should be flowers), it's low quality. This place is not expensive for what you are getting. Comparison: Roman Chamomile: $3.50 for oz. German Chamomile: $1.00 for oz. The sf store was selling the German Chamomile for the price of Roman Chamomile. And it was filled with leaves and stuff. And it was not bright yellow. Be careful with known allergies to certain family of plants. Don't brew it into a tea if it's going to make you unable to breathe. read more

The staff here is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about whatever you may need. Have low energy? Try some ginseng tinctures. Want to avoid a miserable allergic spring (that's me)? Try these homeopathic allergy pills. You'll also be able to find some good incenses, candles, sage and other hippie tools of the trade. My reason is for spices and herbs. I love to cook && even though I realize I can get cooking spices at the dollar tree there is something about spending the little bit extra to get them from here that makes my food taste so much better! The variety of spices they have to offer has opened up so many different flavors in my recipes, it is amazing! Whenever I go in and have questions, the employees are very knowledgeable and kind. I never feel like I am being bothersome to them when asking multiple questions. I never realized there were different kinds of oregano's, cinnamons, Chilli powders and all with a different flavor and aroma to cater to various recipe results! Stopped in here with a short list of unusual barks, berries and herbs for an artisinal concoction that I am embarking on. After browsing a bit (undisturbed) I walked to the counter and the guy asked what I was looking for. I gave him three items and he immediately pulled the jars and recommended that the weights I wanted might yield "a lot" of one of the items due to its fluffiness. After seeing the volume of the minimum amount sold...I quickly agreed. I appreciated his helpful advice prior to making an error that wouldn't have been exactly costly - but uneccessary. I had some other items that I was considering and asked his thoughts. He was helpful with that too. I then asked about a very rare and unusual item and he was puzzled. Looked it up and quickly found the jar in the back. Came out and I ended up with the prized bark! He seemed quite pleased that he was able to find it. All in all - this is a great little shop for folks interested in buying bulk culinary, medicinal and topical herbs, spices and berries. Prices are VERY reasonable!! read more

HUGE walls of herbs, one I'm pretty sure in entirely devoted to teas--that they make. They put the loose tea in a little bag for you, with a little note telling you all the pretty herbs you're smelling and tasting when you brew it. I bought the "midnight sun" tea for my friend because the combination of herbs looked wonderful, smelled wonderful, and she told me, tastes wonderful. I'm also kind of an environment freak, and this is the place to go for a wide selection of biodegradable and cruelty-free shampoos, soaps, lotions...It's hard to find some of this stuff! They even carry something like 5 different kinds of aluminum free deodorant. Take that Trader-Joes! And, the prices are not at all obscene like most organic-hippie stores. Check out this store! This is yet another one of my favorite small stores on Telegraph Ave. As you walk in, you'd smell that lovely aroma of incense and essential oil which fills the air. It calms you down right away and you can begin browsing through their great selection of items. I get my whole food vitamins/supplements, loose leaf tea, herbal sun blocks, herbal shampoos and lotions, natural remedies and alternative medicine here. I'd rather buy them from independently-owned small stores like this than from supermarkets or chain pharmacies. Nice staff - professional and helpful. Best of all - they have tons of various types of TEA leaves! Get the Chai Marsala Tea (in loose leaves), and brew it on your own. The staff would give you the instructions. Although the color of the Chai Marsala did not turn out to be as brown or "dark gold" as you'd get from other pre-packed Chai tea bought from supermarkets, it has a strong, undeniable aroma, and it packs plenty of spices and heat! It's super fragrant and aromatic. Makes all the pre-packed tea bags pale in comparison. CONCLUSION: Not only is it much more ecological to buy loose leaf tea (save all the unnecessary packaging), it tastes 10 times better too! I love Lhasa Karnak! :) If you're not into other organic herbal stuff, at least BUY YOUR VITAMINS here instead of spending that money on Walmarts, Safeways and GNC. Support local stores! read more

It's a tea connoisseur's dream come true. It will take me many moons to learn about all the teas and tea blends they have, and that's aside from the essential oils, vitamins, and bulk herbs (I've bought cloves and cardamom from here). My tea recommendations: Mu Tea = made for women, primarily roots and the like, and has qi gong Peppermint Tea = It's my absolute favorite, hands down. Shadyrest Tea = good for a little R&R Ginger Tea = good for colds and digestion FYI I don't know anywhere else that sells GINGER CHEWS! Your one stop shop for green/alternative medicines! This was my usual spot to stop off here to get my vegetarian multi-vitamins as well as my iron supplements. I could just get them at whole foods, but I'd rather support a small business. I haven't been able to try out some of the other stuff in the shop, but if you are looking for alternative medicines rather than just those at walgreens, its the best place to go. Even though I graduated from Cal and moved from Berkeley to SF, I still come back to Lhasa Karnak on Telegraph just to get my veggie vitamins. The staff is very helpful and nice. The store has a very earthy atmosphere...and a VERY big variety of fresh herbs line the wall in back of the register. I found my mustard bath and organic soap...which was actually a little cheaper than what I spend when I buy it online. I will be returning very soon. The staff know their stuff, you can get useful accoutrements such as a porcelain mortar & pestle, and the book selection is great. I've never had a problem with any of the herbs bought here growing bugs later on. The atmosphere in here is great, too. I used to shop at the store down on Shattuck, but it is just claustrophobic by comparison. read more
