Mandarin - Pork with Bamboo Shoots and Double Cooked Pork

Mandarin was brought to my attention through a Yelp newsletter that discussed places to eat in…read moreReston. We had never heard of Mandarin before that. I looked at the reviews, which are mixed, with some who really like the food but some who were naysayers. Still, we thought it was worth a try. One thing mentioned in a review is that there are currently only two tables in the place. Thus, we were glad to discover that they work with DoorDash. We placed an order this past Sunday. We ordered two hot and sour soups, one order of chicken with snow peas and one order of spicy chicken with garlic sauce. As an aside, rice comes with each entree. We didn't know that so we had ordered one side of rice. As for the food, the portions are large. We got two meals out of them. We were pleasantly surprised by the food. The chicken with snow peas was a mild dish that came with an abundance of white meat chicken and a generous amount of snow peas. The snow peas had a nice crunch to them. The chicken with garlic sauce was mildly spicy and contained white meat chicken, sliced onions, and sliced celery. It reminded me of the same dish I had many years ago: same ingredients, same taste. My husband enjoyed his chicken dish. The hot and sour soup was okay. We've had better, but we've also had worse. If you like button mushrooms, they put a lot of them in this soup. We decided that we would order from them again.

Called them up to voice my concern, food isn't cheap right? I was given a bullshit answer "you need to come here and speak to blah blah" "I'll take your name and phone number but I'm not 100% the owner or manager will call you back" what the ??? Not sure anyone is going to call me back or wait the best one yet "I need to come in and speak to someone about the crappy food I paid for" I can't. I know this is probably one of the most decent places in Reston, but listen...I would drive anywhere and happily give my hard working money elsewhere.

You are the one I spoke to on the phone. And this review was for 3 events in one. How do you even know what day or time I am referring to? Look this place needs to work on their customer service and many of your other reviews say the same thing. The same goes with your quality of food. Those two go hand in hand for a great restaurant. I appreciate that you will take steps to work on things. It will definitely bring back a lot of your lost customers especially the old ones. My family and I and friends used to come here from when they first opened. The staff and owner were so pleasant then and quality of food was amazing. I don't know why I keep giving this place a chance anymore. The owner is so rude now and so is the staff. It sucks to say two words to them now. I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they've become so bitter because they have to deal with so many nonsense desi people. But it is just too ridiculous how they behave and speak now. On top of that the quality of the food has gone down significantly. Good thing is there are some halal places around Loudon area that are still great, just sucks that it is far from people on east side.

It's almost empty whenever I visit this place; I think a few years ago it was at least somewhat packed. The only thing that's louder than spoken word is the sounds you'll hear from the chef using the wok to cook things. It's actually really satisfyingly to hear because at least you know the food you order is made on the spot. I ordered the Sesame Chicken with fried rice, nothing special. They give you a pretty decent portion but I think they give you way too much sauce. My fried rice was soaked in the sweet tangy sauce they used to coat the Sesame Chicken with. Perhaps I could have asked if I could get the fried rice in a separate bowl to prevent that from happening. It's been a while but I do remember their menu being a bit more... extensive; it's good that they wanted to simiply the menu but its like half of the options are gone. There was once a Coke Freestyle in the restaurant too but sadly it's been replaced with a 6 soda fountain dispenser. Comes with your usual coke flavors. While I enjoy the silence eating food, maybe some music in the background would be more.. uplifting? Other than that, can't go wrong with this place.

One of the highlights of the night was meeting the owner, Jason. We bonded over our shared Cantonese backgrounds and even got to meet his aunt, who was visiting from California and happened to be sitting next to us. It made the whole experience feel incredibly welcoming and personal. We ordered the Dynamite Roll, which was a solid choice with 8 generous pieces, and the Szechuan spicy wontons, which were juicy with just the right amount of heat. If you visit, definitely grab a seat at the bar. The bartenders are friendly, engaging, and really add to the experience. We were treated to a complimentary shot of Jäger with Jason and even got to sample their Lychee Pearl cocktail because the bartender had made an extra. The cocktails really stood out. Instead of masking everything with sugary juices, they use extracts and creative techniques to build balanced drinks that complement the flavors beautifully. Jason also mentioned that their cocktail specials change every month, so we already told him we'll be back regularly to see what new creations he comes up with.

The place was filling up and the ambiance reminds me of a traditional bustling noodle house - perfect for the cold snap we were experiencing at the time. We got hot and sour noodle soup, sichuan beef noodle soup, and an order of their pork soup dumplings. Portions are generous and prices are fair, it's easy to become a regular here if you live nearby. The hot and sour noodle soup is as advertised - just enough spice to complement the sour, but not overwhelm to make it feel like mala. It's served, as expected, with glass noodles, some bak choi, and some pork slices. Nothing spectacular but par for the course. The sichuan beef noodle foon soup was slight notch better. The broth gives really warm vibe and you can tell it's been brothing for a long time. Again just the right amount of spicy to make you keep slurping for more. The noodles were average, chewy, but not bouncy. Also comes with a healthy amount beef slices and bak choi. Again - a great noodle soup bowl but nothing jaw dropping. Soup dumplings were fantastic, however. The pork definitely has its own marinade and the soup is flavorful. The dumpling skin is well constructed and complemented well with the noodle soups - especially in cold weather. tldr; solid noodle soup spot, they seem to be consistent and really hits the mark when you're in a for your noodle fix. Soup dumplings are probably a must get side dish with whatever your main is
