In Sumter for a few days and decided to stop by. We ordered fresh spot, catfish, black bass, porgies, oysters and shrimp and all were cleaned on the spot, fried and seasoned to perfection. The only downside was that we weren't aware that our order would take over and hour, but not enough of a downside to deter us from going back. I particularly loved the way the staff was with the customers, asking about their families and such. Shows me that this is a beloved local staple. If you want to be able to pick your own fresh fish, have them clean it and then fry it for you (or you could have them cleaned to go), this is your spot. Just plan to wait about an hour or more. The only con that I have about this place is the waiting as anyone would tell you including the people there themselves (45 mins - 1.5 hours), so this would not be advised to get during for lunch. And it's small inside and smells like fish/seafood in there if that bothers you. Asides that, service is awesome, food is great, and it is by FAR one of the best bargains you'll get in Sumter. Fries are so-so, but the fish and hushpuppies are things you HAVE to try at least once. Whenever I'm with someone in town that wants fried fish, this is always my first recommendation! read more

Great food, recommended for anyone who loves seafood (and chicken wings). Ordered the fish chicken special, 5 chicken wings and 3 pc fish, $12.95. Pick your choice of fish when you order; whiting, tilapia, flounder and there are fish choices that I didn't catch (see photos for the fish choices). Also a choice of hot sauce on the fish. It took about 30-45 minutes but it may have been less than that because we left and came back to pay and pick up. What's also great about this place is the fish is cooked fresh. Cash and debit/credit cards are accepted. Two sitting tables by the door can be used to enjoy your food. Bottled drinks are $2.49 and they have tea lemonade for $1.95. We paid $30.88 for our meal and 2 drinks. Pretty affordable and a lot of locals support this business. So support local! read more

We travelled to South Carolina for Thanksgiving and planned a fish fry the day after. Whittings at Liberty Seafood did not disappoint. We got a package of whittings for $35. The place was what you expect a fish market to be, no bells or whistle. However, when we got home what a big surprise. The fish was very and of course we put a special seasoning on the fish. Walmart, IGA and Food lion could not compare to the seafood and Liberty seafood affairs. Simply delicious read more

I read the review that gave this place 1 star and I don't think they were being kind. Maybe it was an attempt at satire, but it came across as mean spirited and disrespectful. This place is staple of Sumter Sc. A simple fish market that sells fresh raw fish on ice. If you don't like a fishy smell, don't come here. You can pick the fish you want and they are willing to gut and wash it for you. They also have a good menu of fried foods. I don't eat here often, but I do enjoy it every time I order from here. Don't expect the grandiose fish markets that you'd expect to see in Seattle or Maine you are in Sumter SC. A place with one "fine dining" restaurant. read more

Upon finding out the gub-mint was forcing us to move to Sumter (Shaw AFB) after many years in Italy, the first thing I did was go online to see what kind of restaurants there were and, more importantly, to find out where we would be able to buy fresh fish and seafood. I figured Sumter is close enough to the coast that there would be a few decent options. Boy was I wrong. This place was the only one I found online so shortly after arriving here we went and checked it out hoping to find an assortment of fresh fish, seafood and shellfish. All they had were small, nasty looking fish that looked like they'd been pulled out of the local creek (crick?). I've come to learn that people down here prefer this kind of fish and they like it deep fried so it is very popular with the locals but for someone who grew up in New England, this is hardly what I call seafood. My wife loves oysters and so we've bought them from here a couple times but the quality of the ones we've bought has not been very good - she actually much prefers the oysters at the IGA believe it or not (I tend to agree). If you are a local, I'm sure you'll love this place and what it offers but I have quickly learned why most people who work here at Shaw (ie, non-locals) buy their fish and seafood at IGA. read more

OMGoodness, I found you guys online! Hot dawg!! I'm the Mom from Atlanta, Ga whose daughter knows she'll have to stop by y'all before she gets on the road. My secret has been burst wide open! All my girls are seafood lovers. When they see their sister come in with that brown paper bag, they start begging for my fish. As much as my stomach wants to tell'em..." Heck no!". My heart is a different matter and I'm lucky if I end up with 2 fish. You guys are amazing!
