I was visiting and heard about this spot. There were so many preventable issues with this visit. GPS directions will take you downtown on Broad where you will find it is an event space. However- the hours and times of the RESTAURANT are clearly posted on its doors. A staff member cleaning the space redirected us to Shaw Feild where we found the actual restaurant that was empty, with staff members in the back and no one to let us know if it was open? Emmanuel was our server. He sat us by the front door, making sure we had empty tables between us and other patrons. He also cleaned the table before we sat down. It was busy, and Emmanuel made sure everyone was taken care of. Masks were required, social distancing was enforced. Unfortunately the strawberry and pecan salads were not in season, so I thought I'd have the burger. But it only comes with fries. To get green beans instead would be an up charge. So I chose 4 honey fried chicken wings with two sides. Husband got the same. His two sides were corn and mac'n'cheese. Mine were green beans and yams. While we waited for our food, we looked around. Two flat screen TVs had the football game on (Pittsburgh vs Tennessee). The wall was decorated with lots of framed photos - too far to see who was in them. Today's special was on a chalkboard: download Jeffrey's new single and get $1 off your meal. Food came quickly! Mac'n'cheese tasted home made - delicious. Corn, green beans, and yams were good. Where do I start... thank God for the nice Servers... the food was mediocre and the place was ok, remove the sticky fly trap hanging from the ceiling with 3000 fly...(of course slight exaggeration)... but no score was visible the kitchen was not desirable... the food the cabbage was awful and everything except the macaroni and cheese had so much sugar that diabetes was definitely the main course... this place could not have won any award... who was the competition? If you want TRUE southern cooking, TRUE Afro-American food, this is your place. I try greens at most places I go always looking for the correctly cooked ones but most people don't season them well, turns out all bitter.... Not here! The free appetizer is honey/cinnamon glazed cornbread! This is a first! I, being a northerner, always ask for unsweet tea, which they didn't have but the very polite host made some for me. I ordered the honey fried chicken with greens and rice and gravy. Rice seemed parboil so pass on that but the greens were sweet and salty like they should be and the chicken was so juicy, crispy, and sweet! My husband and I visited this location while visiting family. My mother-in-law always rave about this spot and once we tasted some of her food we had to visit to get more for us. We called ahead and placed our order over the phone and it was ready for when we arrived. We had an order a the fish, collard greens, rice and gravy, and Mac and cheese. My favs were the Mac and cheese and collards. The fish smelled amazing and tasted okay. The collards were tender and sweet while the Mac and cheese was cheesy and oh-so-good! My first week in Sumter! I wanted some good southern food. Connected to the gas station(my vice )... but Highly recommended, ehh why not. Glad I did! But I can happily say, Jeffrey Lampkin has officially secured our business every single time we visit now. Mr. Lampkin welcomed us himself and he is one of the most friendly, inviting, charismatic, funny person we have ever come across. He, himself, is well worth the price of admission. But all of the food was absolutely delicious. Fried chicken, was friend perfectly, the honey sauce was mouth watering. All the sides were amazing. Pork chop was cooked perfectly. All of it was freshly cooked. None of it was premade and warmed up garbage. This food came straight from your kitchen table. Only complaint we had was the sweet tea, and lemonade are too sweet. If you get them just mix unsweet with them. But if that's the only complaint we were able to muster then Mr. Lampkin is doing something right. Best way to describe this restaurant's food is, home cooking. You can tell Mr. Lampkin puts his heart and soul into these dishes. There is actual TLC put into these meals and you taste the difference from other "country" food restaurants. Do yourself a favor and give this restaurant your business. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich loaded with fries. Her fish was the only thing edible on her plate and even that didn't smell right to me. The fries were all I could eat from mine. My chicken was so tough that it was tough cutting it with the provided knife. They charged extra for cheese and bacon. I was ok with that until I opened my sandwich and found a cheap Kraft single and 1 piece of bacon. I'm from the country and this was the worst excuse for country cooking I have ever tasted. When walking in you don't really know what to expect because the restaurant itself is in need of updating and attached to the BP gas station. It has its own separate entrance which I liked unlike other restaurants that are attached to connivence store stations. We had the most sweetest polite young lady serve us. They were not too busy and the menu is full of great feel good southern cooking options. I had grilled chicken breast with greens and sweet corn. The food was very good and the greens were probably the best I've ever had. The owner/cook came out and checked on us and it is very obvious he puts allot of love into his food. The food takes a while to come as it is prepared FRESH just like my grandma's kitchen, but it's worth the wait. I had the fish and grits with a side of cornbread and took honey wings to go. I got the fish dinner. Fish was cooked well and was pretty good. The 2 sides I had were cornbread and greens. The greens were a little sweeter than I would do on my own but we're pretty good. I would add some smoked turkey leg instead of bacon but that's me. The cornbread was a little overcooked and dry. A slight sweet taste to it. I might try it again but would ask for some honey or maple syrup to moisten it up. All in all I'll try it again maybe get some chicken or a burger. read more
