Padgett Business Services - Jeffrey Kreyssig, CPA

Unbelievably bad business practices since Jeff Kreyssig sold the business. My tax preparation fees…read morebasically doubled under the new management in 2024. I had a very serious family health crisis that distracted me from following through on picking up my taxes - and they NEVER contacted me directly to come to get them. I ended up paying for them to be filed in early April this year and was told they had been filed (paid 4-2-26, check deposited 4-7-26 - so three months ago). I got a letter from the IRS stating my 2024 taxes had never been filed. The person in the office checked and said they had not been filed - I was livid - because that same person told me three months prior that they HAD been filed. I called them (got no response) then went in to the office, related the latest from the IRS and was told the head guy was away on vacation and to come back next week. I called this afternoon (Monday) after the long holiday weekend - it was asking too much apparently that this major screw up on their part would cause them to handle this screw up on their part with priority attention. Talked to the boss who wanted to see a copy of the cancelled check to prove I had paid back in April! I did send images of the cancelled check and related bank data. Unbelievable that THEY needed ME to prove they had been paid - which they had been - isn't that =Business 101?!?!? Shoddy business practices and a complete lack of concern about their clients. I had my taxes done elsewhere this past year - got a call from the new accountant ON MY WAY HOME from dropping them off telling me they WERE READY to be picked up (this was on 4-07-26 - 8 days before tax day!) and they charged me $400 less that Padgett did the prior year for a return that had the exact same number of forms. I own my house and take the standard deduction - how the hell complicated is my return that they doubled the price. Do yourself a favor and go to Liberty Taxes in Wakefield.

Take your taxes elsewhere. This firm is no longer trustworthy under Wes' ownership. He is…read moredismissive, rude, and condescending. After acquiring the business, he increased the price for a corporate return by 30% without notifying existing clients. When I asked why this wasn't communicated, he responded, "I've been in this business a long time. I do pretty well and can be selective with the clients I accept." This attitude speaks volumes. Wes clearly does not value his customers. His lack of transparency and disregard for professional communication undermines the trust that is essential in any business, especially one handling sensitive financial matters.

Bumped from two stars to three for these reasons:…read more 1) The company took responsibility for a mistake that triggered a $200 fine from IRS, and refunded me for it. Thanks. 2) I was able to reach my accountant on the phone easily during the peak season, and he gave me a quick answer in a few hours - during the weekend. Still, my experience was less than satisfactory. (1) The return that the team prepared had two mistakes, which I spotted and saved myself 6,000$. This is the exact opposite of H&R Block Second Look - I was the second look! (2) There was an additional mistake that triggered a review by IRS, which costed me $200 (refunded by Dimov, as mentioned). You don't want to get reviewed by IRS. (3) Even if I started uploading my documents early, big stuff in February and March 3 (with some small updates for few hundred dollars coming later), the return was ready only on April 6, and the signature docs only on April 8. Add the weekend, and we got REALLY close to the deadline. They even suggested filing for an extension... due to their own delay. (4) My accountant was incorrect about the safe harbor and about AMT cost basis. It took multiple messages to clarify the issues, and one question was eventually escalated to his manager, who initially missed the point and gave me an unrelated answer. After multiple messages, where I quoted the tax law, we were at last in agreement. (5) The free Q4 2025 tax estimate took a month (from Nov 7 to Dec 4) after being bounced from one person to another. I ended up doing it myself and it was just double-checked by their team. (6) The team used this Q4 estimate in my return, instead of the actual values from the previous year, requiring me to scan the return line by line to find incorrect data. (7) Through the process, I received messages from 13 different people. Only one of them appears on LinkedIn or any Google search. Draw your own conclusion about this. (8) They offered me a tax-estimate package where they would help me estimate my quarterly payments. This was priced as 3 hours at 360$. Does it take 3 hours to scrape a few bank statements for data (AI is really good and fast) or 3 hours to run their software on these numbers? Come on, this is 2026. Really, not what I was expecting.

This is a family business: Ray does the prep, his wife (of 49 years!) does scheduling, and his adult grandson and wife assist in the practice. The office is filled with family travel photos and mementos, and small things to make customers feel well served and welcome: water bottles and soda are on the customers' side of the desk, with candy, phone charging cords, and pads and pens. I got a rubber jar opener that Ray gave out last year - his 30th anniversary client gift because I didn't get one then (not being a client). It's in a strip mall on the corner of Newport Ave and Beverage Hill and does t look that reassuring from the outside - but inside is a caring, professional, and friendly group of tax experts. As we sat doing my taxes, about 10 people came in one at a time to drop off, pick up, or ask questions about their tax forms (and one who needed to do amended forms for late W-2s). Grandson Austin handled most of them independently, but was very discreet when he needed quick info from the expert. Ray saved mea SERIOUS amount over last year's federal tax bill (by finding deductions TurboTax - and the CPA we used before last year - didn't offer/explain, at about half the fee I would have paid either of them). He also helped me learn how to pre-pay state taxes to lower my sticker shock next year: I'll always owe RI because my husband's MA pension isn't taxed by MA when it's paid but it's considered fully taxable income in RI. Ouch. Helping me avoid another huge bill next August? Thank you, Ray! Call early for 2026 - they cannot accept any more new clients this year. I'm so lucky I made the call to Ray Therrien when I did!
