    Terrific carpaccio
    Damian D.

We had a terrific meal Saturday here. A warm greeting, great server, prompt but not rushed service. The lemony dressing on my carpaccio brightened the silky meat, offset by thin sliced celery. Arancini were proper and correct. My veal stew special was perfect for a winter night, and the veal milanese tender with a well dressed arugula salad. Yes, it can be a bit tight space wise, but not too bad. The only minor disappointment-the rolls were just above 'meh'. La Rocca will be in our rotation.

Came by for a Sunday evening date night with my fiancé. We had a reservation but had to wait a bit to be seated. The inside of the restaurant had a nice ambiance, low light with candles. The interior is on the smaller side so I can imagine how it will feel if the restaurant is packed. We ordered an array of dishes. We had the arincini, beef cheek ravioli from the specials menu, steak with Gorgonzola, and carbonara or cacio Pepe (forgot which one). We enjoyed our meal but my favorite was the ravioli. It had such a warm, comforting feel. My least favorite was probably the steak. I didn't enjoy the sides it came with. Overall, we had a great date night and looking forward to coming back!

We arrived at 3:50pm, they didn't unlock door until 3:58. We get it, you don't open until 4 but you see you have numerous people waiting, you'd think they'd open the door 10 minutes early. The staff was very friendly and professional. We ordered appetizers and entrees. See pics. Every single person wanted to lick their plates, every single appetizer and entree was delicious! Talking just about my ribeye steak, it was cooked perfectly and full of flavor! Must get the coconut and pineapple dessert!! Cannot express this enough!! Delicious!! Definitely recommend!

My family and I were visiting from Albuquerque and have a lovely meal here for our last night in Montclair. Every single dish that came out of the restaurant was fabulous, fresh and delicious. Their house marinated olives were a table favorite, as well as the spectacular Ribeye and pastas. The owner Robert was very friendly and checked on our table to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Every single staff member was working their butt off and made our evening seamless & excellent. We will definitely come back when we are in New Jersey!

The food here was amazing. It's a BYOB with no corking fee. The lavender lemonade was refreshing. My eggplant was not greasy or over cooked. My lamb chops were to die for. Awesome spot and I can't wait to return. Make reservations because it was packed for a late Sunday night. There is some noise because everyone is chatting it up and enjoying their meal.

Had my daughter's engagement party! I can't say enough of how all went smoothly. Relatives & family including children! The catered menu was superb & kids had their separate pasta menu! Service, ambiance was excellent!! A huge shout out to Ava and Stephanie! Brian, Jackie and more of which I did not get their names! Robert, thank you for giving me my choice on the menu! Great place we have dined, catering this party was also excellent as there dinners!! Highly recommend!

We had never heard of this place but received a gift card to go. The food was delicious! We can't wait to go back and try more items.

Absolutely amazing food. Been there twice and haven't ordered a bad thing. Wonderful service, even though they're busy almost every night they don't rush you or make you feel like they need the table. Highly recommend for both an intimate dinner or a gathering of friends.

Not enough good things to say about this place. First, the location. In the heart of Montclair but off the main drag so you get a real neighborhood feel. By the looks of it, this place is super popular with locals (and others I'm sure) and was full, inside and out. The owners (or manager) and staff were all super friendly. Our server was great and the manager was going around to tables, warmly welcoming (back) many guests. The food is incredible. Totally hard to choose what to eat so repeat visits are a must! The portions are huge.

One of the best meals we have had in awhile! The food was so delicious and stood out from just a good Italian restaurant. The skirt steak was fantastic, we were all fighting over trying some. The pastas were so fresh and seasoned perfectly. The calamari came in a fun "chip" bowl to enjoy. The service was good and the atmosphere was nice! The owner was friendly on our way out. The only hard part is parking in that area but well worth the meal!

The food is so good! Love this place! The salmon is the best I've ever had. I'd skip the tiramisu thought, I've had way better.

Best chicken parm I have had in a while. The mozzarella cheese tasted like fresh mozzarella, super good quality and the tomato sauce was sweet but not too sweet, it's a really solid tomato sauce. My friend got the wild boar pasta and we shared both dishes. The pasta was huge as well and enough for 3 people to share. So much meat in it! Super soft and tender. From a food perspective, our meal initiated with a basket of some of the best rolls I had ever had. They were large, fluffy, and doughy with a hint of crispiness from a light toasting. We then shared the Veal and Beef Meatball, which was gigantic but still managed to have the ideal texture. It was also beautifully seasoned and served in what the chef called his "grandma's plum tomato sauce", which was divine! The sauce was thick and hearty, so when that was paired with pecorino cheese and basil oil, it really made for a fabulous dish. I even cut off a small piece to put inside my roll with a spoonful of sauce - chef's kiss! After that, we enjoyed some of the house-made pasta dishes, tasting each in a family-style format. The Squid Ink Bucatini was tossed with scallops, shrimp, and jumbo lump crab in a seafood tomato sauce. I did not love the briny finish to the sauce or that some of the scallops were chewy. The Tagliatelle with Duck Bolognese, tomatoes, and carrots was good, but I prefer my pomodoro sauce without the addition of a "light cream". Lastly, the special Spaghetti came with lobster, crab, and peas in vodka sauce. That one was definitely my favorite. While I do not love peas, the sauce was rich and flavorful. Across these last two dishes, I thought the pasta was a tad overcooked and could have been more al dente; the bucatini consistency was more inline with my preferences. Overall, I thought the food at Laboratorio Kitchen was above average, but that the service and atmosphere helped elevate the place. I would definitely consider going back to try some of their other dishes.

We ordered some garlic knots, which were good, it just seemed a little bit pricey to charge for the marinara sauce separately, which was not really outstanding nor something special, so I would recommend you skip it. We also ordered the chicken vodka Parm pie which was very good. The chicken was very crispy and the pizza was still delicious the next day when we had the leftovers. I do wanna point out that we have been to many places that offer gluten-free options and this is the first one I've been to that does charge you extra to make a gluten-free. The calamari was by far the best. It was crispy and thick and seasoned well and the sauces were delicious. There were some fried onions in it that were flavorful too. For dinner we got the pork shank which I think was a special, the mushroom ravioli, the eggplant pasta with red sauce and the branzino special with veggies and a sauce. The mushroom ravioli tasted a little like mush to me and I was not a fan of the mushroom flavor. The eggplant pasta was delicious and it came with burrata that melted nicely into the pasta. The pork shank was tender and delicious. The branzino was the star for sure, it was flavorful and delicate and paired well with the sauce and the veggies. It really just needed some salt or something. I also had the 14oz steak which was pretty good because it had some salt on it however the steak came out precut and did not look like a $58 steak. My friend hated both of her dishes. She had the burrata and the lasagna. She said they both lacked flavor. We walked past it 3 times and when we finally left they decided to shine a light with the logo on the floor. When walking in it's more of a lounge than a true restaurant so prepare for that. You will sit right next to people which isn't my preference but it was fine. We started off with the cucumber salad which was excellent. Just wish there was more cucumber than other veggies they put in it. We then got the Cacio e Pepe Gyoza which was the star of the show. It's was unbelievably good. We followed that up with the calamari which was also extremely good and finished our apps with the Chicken Bao buns that were delicious. My friend got the carbonara dinner and honestly I don't get all the hype. Honestly I thought it did not taste good at all. I had one bite and that was enough. I wasn't sure what it exactly was that made it unappetizing but it just wasn't great for the amount of hype social media gives it. The presentation was beautiful for pictures but the taste wasn't there at all. I had the Spicy Miso Ramen which was very tasty. Only problem was it was about 110 degrees in the restaurant which made hot ramen a lot less enjoyable. The beef that they also put in it didn't taste like much just a piece a beef so that was a little underwhelming. Service was very nice, it just seemed they struggled tending to each table consistently, not sure if they were short staffed or just extremely busy because it was a Friday night. Nonetheless everyone was super friendly and tending to our needs eventually. Overall, I'd say the appetizers were the star of the show. I thought all were delicious. Entrees were a little underwhelming though my ramen was delicious, it was just extremely hot in the restaurant for some reason. Staff were good and price was what I expected. Great place to try but probably won't go back. I shouldn't leave a place sweating after a date night. I think social media hypes the place up too much but it is good just not great. The evening started strong with bread that tasted house-made! I even took the leftover back! It was warm, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and perfectly buttery. Such a simple thing, but it set the tone beautifully. For my courses, I had the tuna tartare to start, followed by the spicy rigatoni. The rigatoni wasn't actually spicy, but the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The real surprise of the night was the eggplant parmigiana. It genuinely did not feel like I was eating eggplant. That dish was so well done that my husband who normally avoids eggplant completely devoured my plate. It was such a great substitute for chicken parm and easily one of the highlights of the night. Dessert, unfortunately, is where things fell short. We tried the red velvet pound cake and the mint chip gelato entremet. The chocolate crunch layer on the gelato was extremely hard and honestly it felt like it had come straight from the freezer and hadn't had time to thaw. The mint gelato itself tasted very much like fresh herb mint, which wasn't quite what I was expecting. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. To me, it just leaned more herbal than classic mint chip. Also that pound cake was a bit dry and again hard like it was from the refrigerator. There was live music for Valentine's Day, which was a nice touch in theory, but it felt more like a performance than background ambiance (unless that's what they are trying to go for). The singer was belting songs (for example, Lady Gaga's Shallow - which for the record I love that song!) however when sang tonight we had to raise our voices to talk. Softer, more subtle background music would have made for a more intimate dinner experience. Still an overall good meal, I'd come back for the entrees.
