Checkout lanes that never seem to be open, and a self-service checkout area that is also always closed.
    Michael E.

I like Lidl in Livingston. As with many people, I was under the incorrect belief that Aldi and Lidl were the same company. This is only relevant because I dislike the Livingston Aldi location, so, I didn't even try Lidl for a while, thinking it would be similar. To be fair, the stores are similar in some ways. They are both German discount grocers, and the layout of the stores is similar. They also both carry European products you don't typically see at other local supermarkets. That's where the similarity ends. While neither store can act as substitute for a supermarket like Shoprite, I enjoy browsing the aisles Lidl in a way that I don't at Aldi. Lidl seems cleaner and better maintained. I like their bakery, and their Lidl brand products seem more to my liking. I also like the "coin-free" shopping carts at Lidl. The one downside to Lidl is the checkout experience. Despite all the checkout lanes and a self-service checkout, I have never been there when there was more than one checkout lane in service. More than once, I've left with my groceries still in the basket because the checkout line stretched to the back of the store. They need to fix this. Beyond that one complaint Lidl is a fun place to shop and in certain cases you can actually save some money.

This is the place you go to for a quick and cheap lunch…read more Most of the sandwiches here range from $4.50-$6.00. I dont know about you but the price it self gets me for cheap lunches and the fact that the sandwiches are loaded with good quality deli meat and the staff is nice is the cherry on top. They offer an array of cold sandiwches, hot sandwiches, and even small fried food options like chicken strips and fries. My favorite thing about this place is that even though they are one of the only places in the area to serve deli sandwiches, they are so friendly and cheap (I know I said this already but I need to emphasis this. If you know this area you know there are no cheap options). Turkey and Cheese on a sub with everything on it... Oil and vinager seeps through the wax paper.... YES, Please!

I ordered a beef BEC, and the amount of bacon on it was surprisingly small. I went back to ask about it because it honestly looked like there was only one piece of bacon on the sandwich. I was told they put two slices on every sandwich and that mine had the correct amount. I'll include a photo so you can decide for yourself, but in my opinion, it didn't look like it. I hope this was just an off day because I've had good experiences here before.

On top of that, the store is severely understaffed and visibly dirty. I would never return to this location, and honestly, I wouldn't recommend anyone else shop here either. At this point, I don't trust buying food from this store. I'm shocked corporate hasn't stepped in because the condition of this location is unacceptable. The entire store needs a complete overhaul. Truthfully, it feels closer to needing a closure than a renovation. There is another discount grocery store a few miles away that is cleaner, better stocked, and far more trustworthy. Save yourself the disappointment and shop elsewhere.

I mean they call it a "Discount Grocery Store" right so maybe I'm putting my expectations too high or something. But I doubt it, instead I think it's alot of cheap no-name stuff which reminds me more of the quality type merchandise that a dollar store would carry. Yup that just about covers that. Well I'm glad we were able to work that one out. In the back of the store they prepare fresh "hot" food "to go". There are no prices on the containers (there are many things that don't have prices marked by the way), but there is a listing on the wall above the table. Yesterday I went to get something for a snack. They had a container of 5 fried cakes/dumplings. I had never had them before - but everything else I've gotten here has been delicious, so I had 2 questions; "no meat?" and "how much $" -- and the cook (who did not speak much english) said "no meat" and "aloo" pointing at the list on the wall (it said $7). I was good to go :-) I got to the cashier, ready to pay, and the cashier said "$10"... I replied -- the sign said $7. He replied something like "this is aloo x, you are talking about aloo y" ... to avoid further embarrassment, I paid the $10... but I really had the feeling that they have two sets of prices... I got the outsider's price if you know what I mean. It was disheartening. That said, they tasted fine. even with the tension I felt in my stomach.

They also have a good selection Indian rice in large and larger bags and fresh vegetables with Indian specialties that are hard to find like curry leaves. In the back is a small take out place. I've only eaten there once, it was fine, but I can't review it. Do you want Pillsbury frozen Nan, paneer, frozen ready to cook meals, desserts, snack packs Bombay style, bottled Indian condiments and a huge selection of spices? You've come to the right place. You just have to be patient and battle through. The selection is quite complete and my trips to Edison or Parsippany to get supplies has diminished. Just remember it's a large selection in a smaller store. One cash register and small counter. I can tell you it's busier on the weekends but during the week, you never know. But if you live in Essex County or nearby, it can be your mainstay of Indian food.
