Checkout lanes that never seem to be open, and a self-service checkout area that is also always closed.

I like Lidl in Livingston. As with many people, I was under the incorrect belief that Aldi and Lidl were the same company. This is only relevant because I dislike the Livingston Aldi location, so, I didn't even try Lidl for a while, thinking it would be similar. To be fair, the stores are similar in some ways. They are both German discount grocers, and the layout of the stores is similar. They also both carry European products you don't typically see at other local supermarkets. That's where the similarity ends. While neither store can act as substitute for a supermarket like Shoprite, I enjoy browsing the aisles Lidl in a way that I don't at Aldi. Lidl seems cleaner and better maintained. I like their bakery, and their Lidl brand products seem more to my liking. I also like the "coin-free" shopping carts at Lidl. The one downside to Lidl is the checkout experience. Despite all the checkout lanes and a self-service checkout, I have never been there when there was more than one checkout lane in service. More than once, I've left with my groceries still in the basket because the checkout line stretched to the back of the store. They need to fix this. Beyond that one complaint Lidl is a fun place to shop and in certain cases you can actually save some money.

Interestingly enough Yelp moderators removed my review before they were open because I complained that they weren't open yet (they've been set up for more than a year before opening). The store itself opened on December 11th, 2024. I wondered inside today to check out what the deals were and they had a few deals based on downloading their app. I very much disagree with it, I understand what they're doing in tracking people but I don't like it. Makes me want to get a cell phone just for using on services like this so it's completely separate. Maybe somebody can come up with a burner phone that does that for applications you don't want. That being said, you can get some cheap salmon right now or beef if you want to download their phone app. They have a little bakery which sets them apart from the Aldi, but most the other groceries weren't any different in price than the store brand at ShopRite or Wegmans.
