Just a few updates, prices are slowly climbing up. I've noticed some cheese brands have been yet again changed. I like the fact that they have new barrier doors by the entrance and exit to prevent shoplifting. In the self check-out area, one must scan their receipt to exit. The light will go from blue to green for a successful scanned receipt. My concern is that the parking lot is very dark at night. Not one parking lot light is on. The light from the supermarket barely illuminates the entire lot. One must be careful and mindful when walking through the lot alone. read more

I love Lidl! I have no complaints about their products. I love the flowers and plant varieties. Great quality products. And the bread is simply the best! My problem was that the store was dirty! All the self checkout stations were filthy. There were many customers and only 1 register open. Another employee trying to make their system work. The other one assisting the self checkouts. He would help customers but not clean the stations. It was gross! Unfortunately, I couldn't wait and had to use the restroom. One stall didn't have paper, the other was filthy. The floor was extremely dirty. This has to be the dirtiest Lidl I've been to. read more

Here it is June 2024 and I decided to give Lidl another chance. HUGE mistake and waste of time and money. I will be returning the putrid Hummus and stale Wheat Crackers which are both, of course, Lidl brands. The selections in the store were few and the prices were crazy high. Absolutely no savings at an establishment who advertises low prices. Due to the flavor, I wouldn't eat their products for free. This was my very last trip to any Lidl store. read more

I've started to get really impressed lately with Lidl and this store is part of why. It's definitely lower prices than some of the other supermarket chains and they have a smaller selection, but what they do have is a clean store and they have quality merchandise. There were some things in this store that I've not ever seen elsewhere and so I managed to pick up a couple of snacks that I will be bringing home. Prices are low and they do that by limiting the selection, by having customers bag their own groceries and by not giving away those bags for free. And more. Give Lidl a try. This is one of several Lidl's in Virginia Beach. For a smaller grocery store, it has the basics and almost everything you need. Their own Lidl brand is not only cheap but of good quality. It's better to use the self checkout if you pay credit card because sometimes the line can be long. When Lidl opened here in Virginia Beach near my home, I was so psyched. I enjoy the low-overhead, bag-your-own, efficiency to save ideas of retail... it was always clean and well-stocked, items clearly labeled, friendly staff... not so much anymore. We still shop here because it's close, the produce is very affordable, and they have some great deals on lean meat and dairy. I think that they know this, though, and have cut back on service assuming people will still come and spend and they don't have to work as hard. A few weeks ago, we pull in and there are carts EVERYWHERE. Sidewalks blocked, cars taking up parking spaces... I look around and realize that the cart corrals are missing on both sides of the parking lot, so folks have just stared to pile their carts up on the grass, sidewalks, and in parking spaces. Oops. I thought they were being replaced, or maybe they're putting in a new system... nope... it's been several weeks and there is still nowhere to put carts. We roll ours back to the front door, but most people do not... If I had my baby with me, I probably wouldn't either since I'm not leaving her in the car. Lately, each and every time I go in there is a maximum of 2 lanes open and usually customers lined up past the end-caps of the isles... they put in a self-check, but there's no one to attend to it, so it also gets backed up when someone mis-weighs something or needs assistance because a cashier has to call someone (if they even notice someone needs help). They talk on their headsets to one another, other cashiers and stockers come up and talk to cashiers while they work (and they ignore the customers). Their produce has also gone downhill... the last time I bought two bags of fuji apples (which I usually buy and have no problems), I got them home and they're rotten inside the cores! I do know that I can take it back and get my money back, but the point of the guarantee of quality should be that I can count on getting quality... I don't want my money back as much as I wanted some apples for my kids to eat this week. The same in true of others produce items... squishy tomatoes (when I cut one open, the seeds inside had sprouted), near-rotten bananas from bruising... it's not worth saving money if it's not good produce or won't last more than a day or so. I think we're going to be paying a little more and switching back to our old stores. read more

I am impressed with this store! I waited a couple of days after grand opening to check it out and the crowd wasn't too bad. The inside space is very bright with floor to ceiling windows. There are only 6 long rows so need to go in circles. There's no paying $0.25 for use of cart, however, you do have to bring in your own bags or purchase theirs for $0.06. There's also no baggers. They were giving free bags and had baggers on staff for the grand opening which ended on 6/18. The food brands are of Lidl labels but you will also find name brands you know. They have a bakery when you first enter the store and boy can you smell it! There were all types of bread, cookies, donuts, croissants, little pizza bread, soft pretzels, bagels, and Apple turn overs. I think I named them all, because I TRIED them all!!! Yes pastries are my fave! They were warm, fresh and buttery good. For the meats, they were all of good quality made in the USA. Meats from all price points to include one that caught my eye, a ribeye for $20 for 1. Like their competitor, there's also an aisle of clothes, shoes, housewares, and other things as such. There were organic products, fresh fruits and vegetables, a large selection of frozen items. Prices seemed very competitive. This is definitely a store I will be visiting frequently! read more

Achtung baby! Love Lidl when you want to save some cold cash and well buy more At Lidl. They have a bakery (ahem aldi) and nice fruits and vegetables. Lidl brand items are decent for the most part. Got some Baby wipes and they are not as plush as huggies but 1/2 the price. The employees are friendly and keep store stocked and tidy. Bring your own bags or just use boxes. I do like that I can fill my own bags and cart unlike aldi. They throw all your groceries back into cart and then I'm stuck reloaded boxes which takes longer. I came in midday on a Tuesday and they weren't very busy at all. The size of the store blew me away; I wasn't expecting it to be that large. The store immediately caught my eye with their sleek lines and bright light. I found Lidl to be pretty similar to Aldi as far as their prices. They have a great selection of vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and organic food. They had fresh pineapple on sale for $.99! Their bakery items are on point! I purchased a hazelnut filled croissant and it was amazing!! Along the middle aisles, you'll see random items from men's shoes, to women's leggings, to glue sticks, to swiffer mops, to shelves. They also have an assortment of beer and wine. Their prices are crazy low!! You can purchase a paper bag for $.07, a plastic bag for $.10, and/or a cooler bag for $.79. This place was great when it first opened. And the grocery store itself is still great. Lots of options on food AND its got a good selection of body/household items as well. My gripe (and its a major one) with this location is that they do NOT have enough staff-EVER! I had to stop coming here because the staffing is out of control. On a Saturday morning they will have one cashier. ONE. And there will be a huge line of us waiting to be checked out! None of the other workers seem to care OR they aren't trained to be cashiers. Either way, if a company is going to run on low staff like that then they need to cross train their employees. Pretty sure the bakery doesn't need 3 people working at it at all times. I have had to repeatedly ask random employees if we can get extra cashiers and they look at me like I'm speaking Spanish to them. Heres the thing: My time is precious and valuable. I do not have time to waste on a weekend when I am running errands to sit and wait on ONE cashier. If it were a Tuesday night at 9pm I can understand. On the weekend...that is unacceptable. If you want quicker service I suggest the one off of Holland. That way you can visit both Lidl AND Aldis back to back since they are right down the road from each other. I am in looooove with Lidl. They have the best prices and high quality foods and products. I love how their goods are always changing and are so fun! A few weeks ago, they focused on sports equipment and clothing. This week, it's all about gardening. The bakery is quite impressive and their wine and cheese selections are amazing! My sister told me about this place, she said I have to try their coffee pods, so I looked them up online and discovered I could get groceries delivered to my door- THAT DAY!! They charge a $10 delivery fee which I thought was totally worth it to not have to shop for an hour wearing a mask! (They also had different membership options, which I just might do in the future) but after my first order, they gave me a free pass for my second, which I used today. Their service is on point. They actually text you while shopping to let you know if they're out of something and if you want a substitution! Today my driver was running late and he texted me to let me know, which I thought was totally awesome. They have very few name brand things, but every single thing I've gotten so far, has been just as good, if not better than the name brand. We got fresh bakery bread, dairy, ground beef, pork roast, cold cuts, produce, laundry detergent, & paper goods. But we especially love their coffee pods. We've tried just about every one so far, and they exceed even some of the pricier brands! Plus you definitely can't beat the prices! I still can't believe how much stuff I got for 100 bucks! Grand Opening day, 15 Jun 2017 :-) Lidl is a low-cost, European grocer just opening its' first stores in the USA. Other higher cost grocers are gonna hate em, but consumers looking for super low prices on grocery staples are gonna LOVE the prices! I was never a penny pincher when it came to groceries, but I find it amazing that I can come in here, buy a dozen eggs for less than 50 cents a dozen, or milk for right about $ 2.00 a gallon. (1.91 for skim). Everyone has their favorite thing, and here is mine: 39 cent LARGE Croissants, and they are FRESHLY BAKED daily and throughout the day. Compare that to Wal-Mart which sells Croissants for about 3.99 a container, and they may be 2-3 days old... And the Vegetables: FRESH! (Tomatoes on the vine, or Tiny Tim Tomatoes in the box, super fresh and Cheap!) Lidl brand Salsa Con Queso is a 100% carbon-copy of Frito lay as far as taste, but 1.99 a jar instead of 3.99! (I'll take two, please...) Visit Lidl to get the basics at very low prices, catch a few surprises that other stores do not have, in a nice, clean, easy to navigate store. Make sure you get here early! This place really gets packed and it's super hard to maneuver around buggies, people, kids, etc. Also make sure to bring your own shopping bags! This is what keeps the costs so low! The floor is always super clean and the shelves are always in some way being stocked... but when the item is gone, it's gone (unless it's a staple they always carry) I love walking thru the front door and immediately smell the bakery! Grab a fresh loaf of bread (slicer is about knee level), so you can slice it properly before you leave! The veggies and fruits are also right there and man, what a bargain... just try to compare any other store and their prices! They also carry Organic products and they still beat the pants off of prices at other stores! I know that Americans are used to going on a massive shopping haul every few weeks, but this is one that will not always have your items. If it's not fresh, it's not put out. I love that quality mentality! Instead of having 800 choices, they are limited, but are done so to make sure the cost stays low! I shop for just what I need so I don't waste and this really helps! Make sure you can adapt your meal plan if you can't find one particular item! Next up, prepared meals, not my thing, but great for those that are limited on time. Now for CHEESE!!! Such a great selection and it's ever-changing, which is awesome! Lots of specialty meats as well. I was very happy when I tried their fajita meat, it was on sale, so I figured I'd give it a whirl... oh LORD was this so good! The meat was great quality and the price made it so a family of 4 could dine on $7... I am kicking myself for only getting one package to "try", as I didn't want to waste food. They specialize in a lot of European items that are not typically found in America, cornichon. .. oh how I have missed my French pickles and French moutard! Mmmm Check out their chocolate stash..it's not American chocolate and it's so rich and creamy! Their frozen food selection is also limited and I think that is fantastic! They can keep their prices down, simply by not wasting by overstock! Check out their weekly circular, random items pop up from time to time, last time it was men's boxer shorts and some jackets... It is a game to see if you can get everything out of your buggy before the cashier gets finished scanning. .. you can try to cheat with mutiple people, but you will fail! So I have been twice now in the past couple of weeks and I like the place, but I am not sure if I love it quite yet. Conceptually, it looks like like a combination of an Aldi and a brand new Neighborhood Walmart; it's fairly spacious, clean, and has a lot of lighting. It's been packed every time we have went -- late evenings but we usually have no problem finding parking. I think the best thing that I like about this store is actually their shopping carts.. haha. OMG their carts are so easy to push, it's like pushing butter around on a hot pan.. it's so effortless! They also have a spot for people to hang their purses, umbrellas, wallets etc which I think is very convenient. They have a bakery section right to your left when you first walk in and it looks amazing and everything looks like it's baked on site. We haven't tried anything from there yet but we will on our next trip. We have gotten their golden kiwis on both trips now and their kiwis are very tasty! It's sweet and fairly large and at .79 cents each, it was a no brainer to get them. Like some reviews have mentioned, they carry a lot of their own brand, but do carry a few national brands like: Skyr yogurt and some Nestle candies. We went a few days after the opening and it was PACKED. The parking lot was messy and people were parked everywhere. Inside was nice, but it lacked a good flow. I feel like Aldi is the main competitor, and Aldi has them beat when it comes to flow. Their meats selection was very nice, and the prices were competitive. Their produce was very fresh, we'll see in the long run if this will stay. Bring your own bags unless you intend on paying for the Lidl bags. You did not need a quarter to use the shopping car unlike Aldi. Another location is going to be opening closer to where I live so I'm very excited. Now all I need is a closer Aldi and I'll be set. The Hampton Roads area needs more grocery store competition. (I'm from Richmond where all the grocery stores compete with each other and it's easy to find low prices.) read more

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag). They charge 6 cents for paper bags or 75 cents for recyclable bags, so bring your own. Great bakery section and a cool sample spot right next to the bakery. Eco friendly German grocery store. Love the simple fonts used to price their items, but backwards compared to US grocery stores; whereas, instead of the prices on the shelves being on the bottom, they're placed above the item. You'll find some good deals and similar US items. Tons of Greek items I'd like to try. read more

I absolutely love Lidl! As so does my wife who exposed to me lidl and made me give it a shot versus continuing to doubt it and skip over to the traditional grocery stores such as food lion, etc. Lidl has a bright, welcoming atmosphere and even better they have great prices and a huge variety of ideas ranging far more then just food. Lidl also has there own lidl brand of many food and cleaning items and the taste and quality of the lidl brands are pleasantly surprising. Lidl encourages recycling and bringing your own shopping bag, which I normally forget. However if you're like my and left your bag in the car or at home they have bags for purchase for an extremely small fees. I now go to lidl first before the typical big box grocery store and plan to continue shopping there. read more

After living in Germany for a little while I am happy to have this German based company in the area. The wall of bread and pastries is my absolute favorite because of the fresh items and the easy to use check out area. I'm surprised this store isn't more packed whenever I stop in to shop though that might be a result of the interior design and the wide aisles. I never feel crowded or rushed...that is until I get to the check out area. Compared to Aldi I appreciate that Lidl has a long counter which gives me time to pack my own bags but I still feel rushed to get it done as fast as possible to not hold up the line. All in all this is one of my favorite places to get high quality items at low prices and I think worth a trip for anyone on a budget. read more

Arrival of the foreign grocery stores! I've already rejoiced at what Aldi has to offer so I had high expectations for Lidl. First, it's nice to not have to use a quarter for the shopping carts - but one can't help but notice more carts in the parking lot. Husband and I went inside and yours eyes can't help but look at the bakery. We didn't get anything, but the smells are everything! As we walked around, I appreciated a bigger selection of produce. I happily got some veggies on this trip. We walked around some more and started getting really cold. There's a ton of fridges and freezers all around so come in with a sweater! I also appreciated a bigger selection of wine and bought a red moscato and ginger beer. Overall, there's a bigger selection. I don't think it beats the convenience of an Aldi right down the street from us, but it helps to have another spot if ever the need. read more

Okay, it's time to update my original review of Lidl and I am happy to give them an additional star bringing them up to four. At the time of my original review they had only been open a little over a week and were definitely struggling with some growing pains. Being open about 7.5 months now they seem to be assimilating well and have made many improvements. I now enjoy shopping at Lidl. Prices are terrific and the quality of their groceries is very good. You won't find a lot of national brands here but you will find comparable store brands of similar quality at much lower prices. Their fresh produce is very nice and affordable with a good variety of fruits and vegetables. Be sure to check out their bakery department for some delicious items as well. There are often some free samples available. Lidl carries pretty much everything you would expect from today's grocery stores. They certainly carry a nice variety of meats, cheeses and seafood but they are all packaged and custom orders are not available. Oh yeah, they have lots and lots of wine too. Mostly brands I am not familiar with but they sure do have a wide variety. Besides food, Lidl offers household goods, clothing, toys, accessories, etc... These items change from time to time and are generally priced very low. Honestly though, the quality of these items does not appear very high to me. I personally don't buy them because I just don't think they would hold up for me. Like many of their competitors, Lidl has weekly flyers promoting various items. One frustration for me is it seems the vast majority of the times they have desirable meat, chicken or seafood items advertised at great prices I go to the store only to find they are out of stock. Employees at Lidl are always friendly and helpful and the checkout lines move swiftly but do remember to bring your own bags or use some boxes they usually have laying around to pack your items as Lidl doesn't bag your groceries for you. There is a spacious counter at the front of the store which affords ample space for you to bag or box your items if you don't want to do it outside. The private parking lot is very spacious so parking is never an issue however there are often a good number of stray shopping carts scattered throughout the lot by careless or thoughtless customers. Overall I enjoy shopping at Lidl and saving money. I am happy they have made necessary improvements in the months since they've opened. If you haven't tried the Lidl experience I recommend you do so soon, it just may change the way you shop for groceries. read more

I would love to be able to read the weekly flyer as I'm only about 6 miles from this store but for some unknown reason Lidl stopped putting their flyers in the mail or in the newspaper and the thought of looking at any advertising on an iPhone is abhorrent. So, ALDI which is one mile closer gets my business because the include their flyers in the local newspaper What a waste of time. I called Lidl customer care and they told me I should call the local newspaper to find out why the Lidl flyer is not in the paper. Lidl never ceases to amaze me! I can pack a cart full to the brim and never go over $200! I cannot do that anywhere else. The food is healthy, yet more inexpensive of less healthy food at other places. For example, I cannot get bread at Walmart that does not have rubber or other junk for under $2. At Lidl, their bread is 85 cents and it has none of the bad stuff in it. I pass the 99 cent bread store, and I am wondering how Lidl has not put them out of business. read more

Having lived in Germany for over year we were more than excited when Lidl opened its doors in Virginia Beach to test market its brand in the U.S. Though we do not live in Virginia Beach year-round it is a place we frequently visit and have a home. I've held off reviewing to see how Lidl settled into its new market in the United States. What has stayed consistent are the low prices, the variety of perfectly grown local produce, fresh flowers and a great assortment of moderately priced wines and beers. Also consistent is it's specialty aisle with fun items from Germany for Christmas, Oktoberfest and other seasonal holidays. This is typical of the Lidl brand and we enjoyed in Germany and were happy when we saw it carried over in the United States. What has changed? A reduction in the variety of German pastries like Schnecken (a sweet bun that is a traditional morning treat in Germany) and fewer choices in sliced cheeses. German pretzels and pretzel rolls, Gouda, Bratwurst still thrive - but I couldn't find a jar of red cabbage to round out a traditional brat plate. So, 4 stars instead of 5. My message to Lidl - don't go do demographic you miss the items we live you for (and don't forget here in Virginia Beach there are enough military folks and former ex pats in Germany like myself who head for Lidl for just such items). My message to everyone reading this is to try Lidl and you'll understand why their motto is "re-think grocery. Back again in 2019 to ask a question - why no bratwurst orange sorbet or pudding Schnecken? read more

After standing in line an hour for the grand opening I expected a lot from Lidl. And they delivered ten fold. Not only do they have competitive pricing with other stores in the area, they carry products I normally would only find at specialty stores. Irish beef, Italian and Greek olive oil, Belgian chocolate right along side my milk and eggs. I love it. Were the lines crazy today? Yes. But that is to be expected on a grand opening. I definitely can't wait to come back in a week or so and see just how much has changed. Today I had friendly service from everyone and even got to meet the main Lidl corporate head (a very nice gentleman might I add) so I am impressed. Will Lidl hold its shine, I certainly am hopeful. Today I got stellar five star service, and will definitely be returning in the future. When coming to shop here be aware they don't carry all the name brands. But the ones they have are fantastic. Coming up to Lidl's, you'll notice how much bigger it is than it's competitor, Aldi's. My roommate and I brought a quarter and reusable bags just in case but we didn't need them. The carts were a free for all but I think it's better if we did the quarter system so that people would be more courteous with returning the carts. They also provide paper bags at checkout. Going inside, it was packed. What do you expect though, it is pretty new. You also walk in with smelling the aroma of the freshly baked bread and pastries from their bakery in the corner next to the produce. Looking through the aisles, they seem to have more selection than their competitor. I also loved the selection of wine. Highlights: -more selection -yogurt under a dollar -selection of wine -variety of baked goods (tried the cheese roll, cinnamon swirl, and the chocolate hazelnut croissant, which was just nutella inside a croissant and super yummy. All were inexpensive compared to other bakeries) I heard they were making another location near my neighborhood so I'm excited for that! read more

This was my first and last time shopping here. The shopping part was fine, it was the checking out that was a disaster. The checkout lady did not provide any assistance to the elderly lady in front of me who was struggling to bag her own groceries. In fact she did not inform her or myself that you have to provide or buy your own bags and then bag your own groceries. Seriously? Who's bright idea was this? When I asked her about it she told me that it was European. Well you can take that crazy back across the pond to Europe. Last time I checked we're in AMERICA! I can't believe I have reached that age of adulthood where I get excited when a new grocery store opens up. I knew nothing of Lidl's but was happy to squeeze in to check it out. Everything looks really cool and I think it's because it's new. The highlight of my experience was the bakery area. The bread smelled delicious and I really wanted to grab a box to take home but it seemed like that was everyone's idea. The food was okay though I did enjoy the bbq pizza they sell in the convienence area. I will be back again but I won't go out of my way to stop there often. read more

I waited for about a week to try this place out and it was still pretty crowded at 8 PM at night they close at 9 cause the whole parking lot was full. Theres a huge parking lot but not too many areas to return carts to. Glass windows surrounding the front of the store. They also have tiny carts for little future Lidlers, my kids love it and they're so excited to see what I'll put in their carts. As you walk in you'll see and smell the Bakery!! So good and so many choices. Wow. The prices for everything here are very competitive compare to other American based grocery stores. You'll find less big company labels and more of their own private labels but as they claim they're also high-quality. From what I can see their selections are slightly limited. Customer service is somewhat lacking here. There are many employees but most of them were just scrambling to load the shelves rather than helping customers to find what they're looking for. Couple of the freezers in the meat section was out of order. They also have a limited time selections section and most of the price labels on them were missed labeled. It's gone downhill in quality and open registers, but prices have gone up and the way items are priced is misleading. Lidl is closer than Aldi, but after getting fatty, grisly ground pork, mis-priced steaks, and tasteless canned goods, I'm back to making the drive to Aldi's. If I need a single item or two, then Food Lion as its close, but also suffers from long lines at the registers. High priced nasty food is not the way to stay in business. I LOVE this store. So much to get for good quality and low prices! I usually shop at Costco and Aldi but this could be my one stop shop!

I finally got a chance to visit the new store.. I was in the area... so I made a u-turn ..Very nice store...but, their Fresh bread is phenomena! Can't wait until the new store open on General Booth. I will go there just for the bread on my way to the commissary to finish my shopping. read more

This location was just A-OK for me. Clean produce section, several staff stocking items. Clean product section, and even though they put items in a bin like a clearance section near a checkout lane at a Wal-Mart they were organized-ish. Prices are cheap, and it was packed. Glad to see they are so busy a couple weeks after opening. Hopefully the influx of locations like this and Aldi's can bring down the inflated price of groceries in this area. After looking through their shelves at 6pm on a Saturday evening I noticed that they were nearly out of several products, namely meats and cheese. The bathrooms had an off smell to them, almost like a fish pier, very off putting. For this I will be removing a star each for cleanliness and for them running out of product. YMMV on both of these issues but I can't reasonably give a place with a smelly bathroom and no chicken in stock anything more than a 3-star review. However, Prices, produce, and product selection at a deep discount will make me return when they put in a new location closer to my house on General Booth Blvd. read more

Have I ever mentioned that I like this store a lot? I wouldn't get the sandwich bread because 3 out of 3 times it was dry like crumbly dry. The service here is very nice, professional and this store smells amazing, like flowers and fresh produce. The one thing I like is that one day I went to get bananas and there weren't any. I asked if there were anymore and I was told no because the shipment came in too ripe and unsellable they had to toss the shipment. read more

Comparing this grocery store to Aldi's or any other bargain grocery store that I've been to, this place was by far really neat and clean. I mean, I've never seen a bargain grocery store offer so many fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts that were organic & cheap! This grocery store would be the place to get most of your fruits and vegetables, but the selection of meat is quite limited and the steaks are expensive. FYI- even though you don't need a quarter to borrow one of their shopping carts, you do need to bring your own bags and bag yourself. They have a huge parking lot, so no need to worry about parking unless for some reason. Kinda bummed that there is only one location in Virginia Beach. I hate traveling more than 5 mins to a grocery store! read more
