    We really enjoyed Root Theory.
    R M.

We loved this place! Last night was our first time here but definitely won't be our last. Wine was good, atmosphere was good and there was a band (Root Theory) playing that we really enjoyed all night. The only negative thing is we wish they also had beer. In our group of 4 my husband was the only one that doesn't drink wine. He did end up drinking a little bit, but I think they might get more people in if they had an option for beer drinkers too. Otherwise super fun night and we can't wait to come back.

    Coldest beverages, warmest Host!

We were in Zelienople for a musical and stumbled upon this newly opened winery. Apparently, there…read morewas a winery here in the past, but this one just opened up. We were warmly greeted by Todd and Gina, the owners, who couldn't have been friendlier. Todd told us all about their wines, including the awards they've won, especially in California, and generously offered us the chance to try any of the wines at no cost. We started with the Gruner Veltliner, a bright, citrusy, and crisp wine. It was extremely dry compared to other Gruners we've had, which are usually more fruit-forward, but it was still quite enjoyable. Next, we tried the Riesling, which was also very good. My wife moved over to the semi-sweet side and tried the Traminette, which I eventually sampled after trying all the dry wines. We both really liked it. I then tried the Cabernet Franc, which was a medium-bodied wine with notes of raspberry, blueberry, and a light mocha oakiness--delicious! The Chambourcin was also quite good, without the typical bite or tartness. Lastly, the Flagship Red, a classic Bordeaux-style dry red, had a pleasant hint of pepper and was definitely a standout. Todd shared that they exclusively offer wines from Stony Run Vineyards in Breinigsville, PA, which has a wide selection. They're also planning to offer Old Fashioneds soon, as their winery includes a distillery, and they'll be featuring a "drink of the week" as well. What really sets this place apart, though, is Todd and Gina themselves. They're genuinely kind people who are dedicated to the community, and it was heartwarming to learn that they both served in the US Military--Todd in the Navy and Gina in the Air Force. We're already looking forward to our next visit when we're in the area again. Don't forget to thank them for their service when you stop by!

We visited on a chilly February evening and all the fireplaces were in use. I love it when there is a fire, the aroma just adds to the ambience. We had the Bruschetta, which was quite marvelous. Very tasty. There is a wine list, but it used to be better. A bunch of lower tier options, with a smattering of maybe 4 quality bottles. We did order a bottle of the house red, and it is sweet, flat, and heavy. My wife gave up on her glass and got a house Cab Sauv, which wasn't much better. We should have gone with the Stag's Leap Cab like she wanted. Dinner was the Filet Mignon and the Steak and Cake. The Filet was excellent and the Maryland Crab Cake was delicious. The Steak with the crab was good, but underwhelming. Desert was a strawberry chocolate cake. It was good. Overall. Great place, great ambiance, good waitress, and good food. Final price was @$217 plan accordingly. That said, we planned and were looking forward to splurging. Yes, I should have splurged more for the better wine too We will be back.

Well we had the occasion, wife's bday, and we bit the bullet and made the trip. There's no easy way to get to Hanoverton, so there's that. But once you make it there, the area right around the restaurant transports you back into the 1800s. Much history on that street and inside the restaurant. Take some time to look around each room and the basement too. The service was top notch. Being a party of 8, we got the private dining in the Taft room. They were all over it and did great in taking care of us. The food is not cheap, but it is good. The deviled eggs with salmon, the bruschetta, the onion soup. Chefs kiss. The menu online is somewhat different than in-house, but that was ok. My wife had pierogis and someone else had the beef Wellington and they both loved it. Can't remember everything everyone had. I had what was basically a pot pie, but with bison. Much to my stomachs chagrin I ate the whole thing and was beyond stuffed. We will definitely be back. I recommend reservations if you're coming after 3pm. Something about that place with the smell of the fireplaces wafting thru the building....

We had a lovely time though we weren't thrilled about sitting in the tiny side room at the tiny 4-person bar with our backs to the room...it felt cramped. Our server helped us choose the perfect bottle of wine from an extensive collection. The apples and rice appetizer was excellent..like arancini balls. My husband had the duck and liked it. I had the lumache which was just ok. The pasta was a little too al dente and the large clumsy shells didn't seem like the right shape for the delicate dish. It was supposed to come with shrimp, but surprise...nope! It came with lobster. I find lobster a bit sweet and thought shrimp would have worked better. This girl is usually in the clean plate club when it comes to pasta and seafood dishes but not tonight. I will say that the dessert alone was worth the one hour drive.. the smoked smores arrived with a bell jar of smoke which the server whisked off to reveal a delectable gooey to-die-for cake smothered in caramel and marshmallow. Did I mention it came with two cups of hot white chocolate to pour over the whole thing? Omg..drool-worthy.
