SCAM ALERT-THEY PREY ON ELDERLY As you can see from all the reviews this company is horrific. They are threatening our family for payments on the service and we never even signed up. They claim they are going to auto debit from the bank account. We have never received one piece of paper or equipment from this group. They claim that our family member with Alzheimers signed up and they refuse to give us any documentation to prove it and we have never received any equipment for anything from them. They told me "you can cry the Alzheimers claim all day long, we don't care"! This is so clearly a scam on old people its amazing to me that the Attorney General has not stopped this scam. I purchased Life Alert for my grandparents after having my grandfather fall on Thanksgiving. Luckily, he was not injured in this incident, but I didn't want him to fall again and get hurt. I would not hesitate to tell everyone how fabulous they have been. The sales rep I spoke to explained all the ins and outs of the equipment and the agreement. I also spoke with a service technician to schedule the appointment to install and she was so kind. When the equipment was installed, it was a painless process. It took about twenty minutes from start to finish. The technician that came out to install Life Alert explained all of the equipment to my grandparents. Life Alert has been fantastic since I ordered them and it has given me fantastic peace of mind. I would gladly purchase Life Alert again based on their customer service alone. My wife wanted this service so they came out and installed it, then told her it was a three year contract! Since my wife did not want a contract she did not sign the contract, then tried to cancel. They told her that she had three days to cancel the contract, even though she had not signed it. Each time she called to cancel she got the runaround, "Don't know what you're talking about, It wasn't me, don't know who that was" etc etc. Eventually they said they would refund her money if we sent the equipment back to them, they received the equipment, and now refuse to refund the money. Actually the company is great at what they do. Someone was always at the other end of the line if you called. The problem is the contract you have to sign. If you need out they will extort you until you have a death certificate. My sister was able to get my Mom the same service through their security company for free. After a year of charging me 70 a month (which I was glad to pay) they literally would not stop charging my account even though we met all the requirements. Life Alert saved my Aunt and Uncle's lives twice---my Aunt had a stroke and my Uncles fell down the stairs and would have bled out if it weren't for Life Alert's quick response and genuine care! Do do not ever call the company just to see how much it might cost to get their monitoring service, and NEVER give them your phone number. You will regret it! I called to get some information on my sister's behalf two months ago. We decided against the service and went with another option, but they still call me several times a week after I told them repeatedly to never call me again and to remove my number from their list. DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!! When I set up the service for my 90 year old mother, i was told I could "stop the service at any time." "Just push the button and someone will come pick-up the equipment and terminate the service - NO EXTRA CHARGES!!" I was never told there was a 3 year contract and a penalty if you try to get out of the contract early due to various circumstances. Upon installation at my mom's they presented HER with the contract that stated she had a 3-year commitment. My 90 year old mother did not read the fine print!! Unless the individual dies, has dementia or goes into a nursing home, you pay a $300 fine. Small detail they neglect to tell you!! ZERO STARS!!!!! We signed up for Life Alert after my husband became very ill about three years ago. My husband fell on July 4th and remained in the hospital or skilled nursing facility until his death on November 7. Life Alert called me and i told them he was not going to be home for months and to suspend our service. Apparently they can't do that without proof. Me telling them is not proof enough for them. Unfortunately he went from the skilled care facility to the hospital ICU several times over the past 4 months. Life Alert called and asked questions but continued to charge us. They even charge us for the month of November! He died and they still charged us. They charge us $350.00 for service they did not do. The machine was unplugged and they know that. They monitor the system and were aware that he was not in the home and the system was unplugged. They are all about the money, they don't care about your loved ones. You are not allowed to cancel their service. It is PATHETIC. You basically have to prove your dead and they still charge you for it. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this company!!!!! Never professional. Supervisors have fired people just because they are scared that the employees may steal their jobs, and even HR would not give any answers as to why they would fire people. They do not make sense. Their offices are not professional and clean, not even close to a corporate setting. This disturbed me since they are responsible of millions of people all over the U.S. What was really messed up: When I brought my girlfriend to the office for her to pick up her last paycheck, I heard people making fun of her and celebrating that she was leaving as we were exiting the building. Dont' use this company for any reason. They prey on the elderly and their caregivers using fear tactics. They are unethical, overpriced and have terrible customer service. They will convince you to sign a three year contract, adding on services to bump the price to four times the usual price for this service. There is no way to get out of the contract unless you die or go into full time care. They get your credit card number and charge you over $300 to sign up and get the unit installed. They don't return phone calls once you sign up. They are inaccurate-got our address wrong, so if someone did show up for an emergency they would have gone to the wrong address. My aunt has been paying for Life Alert for 20 years. Last Friday we realized her system wasn't working so we called them to report it. They weren't able to come out until Monday afternoon, leaving her alone without safety backup for 3 days. A letter was written about their unprofessionalism and risking the safety of a 95 year old disabled woman. They responded with an email saying the system was replaced and they would give her a week's free monitoring. Good thing there was no incident (like a fall) as handling of this situation was unprofessional and put my aunt in an unsafe environment. Shame on you Life Alert. read more

This all sounds like a great idea however I bought this for my parents over two years ago, my mom never wears hers and of course had incidents when she should have pressed her Life Alert but of course it was not on her. Dad wears his religiously but has not used it even when he should have a few times. A waste of money. I called to cancel and was told I have a three year contract and cannot cancel unless they die or go in a nursing home!! Fuming right now! Don't sign a contract with these people! During a "customer service" call I was promised four times to be transferred to someone who could help. This never happened. They do not listen when you are giving them instructions and they actually yelled at my wife who was sitting on the floor, fortunately not hurt but just needed assistance. Then when life changes and you try to cancel the service you are stuck with it for three years. We are stuck paying for something we will not be using. By all means stay away from these people. Like others, I wish I could rate Life Alert "0". It's June 2020 and Life Alert is STILL harassing people by phone and mail to buy their product and service! I read all the comments above - this problem with Life Alert has been since Jan 2013 (at least). My mom already has Phillips Lifeline (for 3 years) and is very happy with everything. She's in Assisted Living now -- she saw an ad or brochure, and decided to call Life Alert because she has memory loss and didn't remember she already has Phillips Lifeline pendant with GPS! They didn't just simply sign her up -- they told her Phillips is a terrible company (which it's not true -- it's a great company) and that she should switch. They coerced and scared her into to signing up for Life Alert, and giving them her contact info and credit card! I was alerted to the credit card charge, and immediately put a freeze and disputed the charge. I had my mom call them back at 800-686-5902 to cancel the order. They told her they would NOT cancel, and told her she was making a mistake. They made her feel bad. They told her to have ME call them so they could "explain" -- I called to cancel and a woman named "Crystal Figueroa" YELLED at me that I was endangering my mom by continuing to use Phillips Lifeline (which has worked perfectly for us, including fall alerts, and has sent an ambulance immediately when it was needed). Crystal would barely let me talk. She kept calling me "my dear" while YELLING at me, berating me, and trying to make me feel stupid. Did not work. I politely interrupted her and asked her firmly to stop calling me "my dear" and transfer me to someone who could cancel the order. She finally did, and they simply said 'we will cancel your order' but did not give me any confirmation number or apology. I researched Life Alert in 2017 when we were first choosing an alert company, and decided against them. Now I will NEVER use Life Alert, AND I will tell everyone I know to NEVER use that company. I signed up for Life Alert after my mom started falling (which we later learned the falling was a result of very aggressive and late-staged cancer). Because of Life Alert, my mom was able to stay in her home. As her cancer progressed, so did the falling, averaging 2-3 times a week. Each time very nice gentlemen came, picked her up, put her to bed, sat her on the couch, or, rushed her to the hospital. One day they came twice. Another day they came with a fire engine ladder to get into her 3rd story apartment. My mom always talked about how nice the men were - and many times the gentlemen were the only bright spot in her day (she dealt with many troubles in addition to cancer). A few other things I experienced: they responded to my mom's alerts immediately, every time. They called me and one other local friend to give us updates (put her to bed, took her to hospital, etc). And, most importantly, remembered her name and showed her the care my mom deserved. If your loved one is falling and you live far away (like I do), get this service. I ordered Life Alert for my mother. The sales person made many promises that were NOT true. Customer service Really sucked especially (Gennady) in the contracts department. I was supposed to sign the contract and they never sent it to me. GPS button was supposed to be attached to her keys and the installer attached it to her purse and it fell off when she was out in public (lost). I am pursuing this contract in court. A friend had a heart attack and ask me to get him some prices for Life Alert. I called to get prices and they refused to talk to me because I'm not the Power of Attorney. They wanted his phone number but he doesn't want to deal with them at this time. I told them all I wanted was pricing and if they couldn't give me that information I would call ADT for prices. From time to time we each encounter a company with an unfriendly representative or poor customer service. After a grueling two weeks dealing with Life Support, ("Help I've fallen and I can't get up"), I wonder if my experience with them is unique. After my initial contact their sales representative was relentless. I chose to think of her persistence as passion for her profession. Then I received the equipment and the real harassment began. They literally hounded me to install the equipment. I felt like a meaty bone in the jaws of a pit bull. My pleas for a few days because I was having unexpected issues in my own life were ignored. They phoned me multiple times a day. My request that they not call my dad was ignored and he was contacted several times. They even called my sister in another state to find out why I hadn't installed the equipment. All in a timeframe of 5 days, not a month, 5 days. So I plugged in the unit but neglected to go through the testing protocol. Within an hour Life Alert called. We agreed that I would go to Dad's the next morning and we would finish the process. At 4am my Dad was awakened by someone from Life Alert speaking to him through the equipment. Instead of being assisted by this service he was frightened by it in the middle of the night. After calling to complain I was contacted by a supervisor, Joe. He told me that everything they had done was out of concern for my dad and had nothing to do with money. I had never mentioned money. I expressed my dissatisfaction and my intention to return the equipment. Joe told me that I was making a "grave, life-threatening decision and putting my dad at risk." I told him I would get a different service. He said lots of stuff about how terrible the others are. I told him that I was dissatisfied and wouldn't deal with Life Alert anymore. He said, "your loss" and hung up on me. It would be difficult for another emergency alert company to exceed the harassment and rudeness I experienced with Life Alert. I'm grateful that their behavior was so outrageous that we didn't get as far as signing their contract. The $21 I had to pay to return their equipment feels like a trivial penalty to avoid continuing a relationship with the worst company I've encountered in years. read more

And elder abuse. I have made numerous calls to Life Alert and spoke with two different managers. We're on a no call list, but it's still happening. I called and tried to get information. I got in touch with a sales person and I asked for some information on pricing and contracts. He lectured me that I don't care enough about my grandmother to even hear his services because all I want to know about is money. Without any specific information he told me basics about what life alert is for 15 minutes (which I already knew). I interrupted and said "sir, I don't mean to be rude but I have a meeting in 5 minutes could I ask you some quick questions?" He then told me again that I don't care about my grandmother and to just go to my meeting. I said so I can't ask my questions. He said just go to the meeting and hung up on me. Folks, please consider using a cell phone instead. A cell phone, even if it is not activated, will still be able to call 911, which will get faster medical emergency response than with going through a third-party monitoring system such as Life Alert. If you do get a monitoring system, you should only purchase a MONTHLY service rather than a three-year contract that Life Alert offers. My mother became incapacitated and now requires 24-hour home care. Attempting to cancel the contract, the Life Alert agent refused to cancel the contract, stating that the 24-hour caregiver could use it or we could give it to someone else. The 24-hour caregiver talked with the sales manager and he also refused to cancel the contract. Since Life Alert did not provide a copy of the contract to me, it was not be possible to find out that the contract COULD BE CANCELLED. It was not until I took the time to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau that Life Alert offered to cancel the contract if we would provide proof of 24-hour home care. read more

I would give negative stars if i could. DO NOT subscribe to Life Alert. They lock you into a contract and make it nearly impossible to cancel. As my dad's dementia worsened, he was no longer capable of using (he pushed the button when he didn't need help, and wouldn't understand to push it if he did need help). My family tried to cancel and every call was a run around - "we needed a doctors note, we need power of attorney, the account holder had to make the call, etc..". This is just a a SCAM to try to ring as much money as possible out of elderly people on a fixed income. My friend signed her mom up to a different service with no contracts, it was just as effective in an emergency and was easy to cancel when her mom no longer needed it. It was also much cheaper. DO NOT GIVE LIFE ALERT YOUR INFORMATION!! I made the mistake of calling them last week to discuss the service. I gave them all my information including CC information and informed VANYA that I would not be ready to pay the 99$ installation fee until the 3rd of March. She said she was making notes in my account to reflect the start date I had requested. Well now she has called repeatedly pretending not to remember what I had told her. Her tactics are high pressure sales and since I would not budge on the original start date her manager, an even more aggressive gentleman, called me and tried twisting my arm into immediately starting services. A CLOSER is called in to secure a sale when an employee/salesperson is not working hard enough to seal the deal. Car sales are routinely done this way. I will not be coerced, cajoled or intimidated into buying anything even if its something I need if high pressure sales are used. The gentleman/closer became very hostile and proceeded to yell at me. Sadly I know that most elderly people will crumble and give in if an aggressive male pushes them. I'm 44! The only thing he got me to do was some yelling of my own and to call the corporate offices in Encino, Ca. Can you believe Vanya just called again while I'm writing this review!! I will cancel my CC and file a complaint with the BBB. My mistake for feeling secure with their reputation. My mistake for giving them my information. Their mistake for thinking they can harass people into agreements. I will find another service to use. Hopefully Vanya reads yelp!
