I am so disappointed and disgusted by Life Alert and have convinced many friends and colleagues to use another company. The department to cancel unfortunately has several nasty employees. I was told in order to cancel that I had to pay for my contract. I negotiated with them and they still wanted an outrageous amount to end my contract. Why would a company need a 3 year contract for seniors? I have reported them to Better Business Bureau and I assume with all the contacts I have informed of my negative reviews, they lost a lot of business and would have been better off to just let me go. This might just be the worst company I have ever done business with. I tried to set up an account for my 90 year old mother in South Carolina. 3 year contract and they could not get the equipment to work for her. I had to literally threaten a lawsuit to get the contract cancelled which they finally did. They told me that once they received the equipment a refund would go back on her credit card. We disputed the charge with Mastercard and it was ruled in favor of my mother. It's been 2 months and they have still yet to refund and say they are not going to give her a credit. I've been on the phone for hours with Life Alert and Mastercard trying to get this resolved and the CC company needs proof that the account is closed. I spoke to 2 different reps and the first one said that they received the equipment and that the money was credited back July 12th. I called Mastercard again and they said they've never received it. I called Life Alert again and this time a different rep gave me a completely different and said she couldn't send me any verification of the equipment being returned nor could she send me any record of the amount being closed. "We don't do that" which mean my mother will not get her money refunded to Mastercard. Around and around we go. This is THE most disgusting and disreputable company ever who are exploiting the elderly for profit. These are the same losers that advertise on CNN, FOX, and other cable outlets. I only gave 1 star because that was the lowest I could give. I have been paying for this service for 2 1/2 years for my mother. (She never would wear the necklace) She fell down and layes there for 14 hours before someone found her. She now has 3 broke. Ribs,a break in her spine at T12, and broke her hip. She also was in a diabetic coma. She was in the hospital for almost 3 weeks. She now has been transferred 2 hours away to recover and receive home health services with my brother. I called today to cancel services. The guy was very unprofessional and insensitive to our mothers situation and medical concerns. He told me that I entered into a 36 month lease and I could not cancel. No other options. Ok fine, I asked for Ana dress to send the equipment back even though I will pay the remaining months. He told me no. I then stated i will google the address and send the equipment back, he then told me he just mail it right back to us. I demanded to speak with someone else specifically a supervisor he said that was him. I had no other options. He kept telling me it was illegal for me to send the equipment back. I ended up hanging up on him. He then called me back. I told him if he called me again I would call the police for harassment. He then stated it's not harassment you have our equipment. Walk away. I have been trying to get my elderly mother and aunt signed up and I gave Life Alert my phone number when I requested a brochure. It seems that Life Alert pushes a very hard sell on the elderly and when I said I was working with a sales rep they said they would keep calling me until I signed up? I asked to be removed from their system and was called again and sent a text. Sales reps steal clients from each other, it is cut throat and based on what I have read, what the sales team says to you, is not what is delivered. Disappointing, but there are many other options. Unquestionably the worst customer service experience EVER. My mother is a long time Life Alert customer and is no longer in her home. I called Customer Service to cancel and was told that they would suspend her service for 30 days at no charge. I explained that she would not be coming back to her home and I would prefer to cancel the service. The customer service rep stated that I needed to send a POA to cancel the service. I responded, 'okay, let's go ahead and put the service on hold because I have other priorities related to her care right now.' The CSR replied 'now that I know your intentions, I can no longer offer to suspend service.' I sent the POA that same day and in that email, I requested that service be cancelled immediately and to let me know if there were any questions. I received an email response confirming receipt of the email. My mother was billed via credit card the following day for service. I waited a few days to see if a credit came through and then called the billing department. They told me that the account was still active and I needed to call Customer Care. I called Customer Care and was told that the service cannot be cancelled until there is someone at the house to de-program the system. Customer Care did not mention this when I spoke with them earlier, and no one contacted me after I sent the email. There is no one at the house now, and it will be several weeks before this next hoop can be jumped through. No doubt once we clear this step, they will throw more hurdles at me. They have to sign a 3-year commitment and then when they die or live in a senior home it must be proven. If its a senior home then they call the senior home to confirm that its true. This service never worked in my rural home. I started calling immediately. They would have me change the location of the monitor but it still consistently did not work. I, too, was stuck paying $70.00 a month for three years. Then the other day I fell down. I pushed the button. Nothing happened. When I could call, I waited and waited. I finally started leaving messages that were never returned. Yesterday I called and canceled the service. I had to pay $620 to get out of a contract for a product that never worked. Then you have to return all the items. So what the heck did I pay for? Nothing. Every person was rude, threatening and one woman called my house repeatedly to harass me. I set up my mom's account in 2019 and was told at the time I could cancel the account when I moved my mom into a retirement facility. A year later, I moved my mom into an independent living facility, and cannot cancel because the fine print on the 8-page contract says she must have 24-hour MEDICAL care. Doesn't matter that she has 24-hour surveillance. To reduce the monthly cost of the system, I returned the bathroom "help" button. Three months later, I'm still fighting with Life Alert to reduce the monthly cost because they claim we still have an old "help" button, which we don't because we shipped that back because it was broken. I would never recommend Life Alert from this company. They are frauds and do not have compassion. after our mom passed in November of 2021 we canceled the service and sent the death certificate. They continued charging our account. I spoke to the dept manager named Romi who was loud and obnoxious and would not listen to mu concerns. We sent the equipment back to them but it was misrouted and went to another address. we are trying to rectify the issue now but Romi charged us $495.00 for equipment. I had Life Alert service for about 9 yrs. and recently cancelled it to replace it with a much better service that was about half the price. With Life Alert I needed a home base device which allowed my pendant button to work only within 100 feet. If I needed to report an emergency I needed to go to the base device to talk to the representative. Unfortunately the home base required a land line for my phone. The land line came with a cost but also with up to 10 robocalls a day in English and Spanish. I should have changed services years ago but the reason for my change a this time was loss of my pendant while taking a chest x-ray. Rather than replacing the pendant which was very old I decided to see what else was available. Cancelling Life Alert was not a pleasant experience. The first problem came with the representative, who was obviously following a script, tried to talk me out of cancelling offering all kinds of incentives. She then wanted to ask endless questions about why I was cancelling the service. At this point I refused to answer questions and it went downhill from there. The equipment that is initially installed is on lease only. I needed to return the base unit and "all cords" which was not a problem. The problem came when I told her I had lost the pendant. She immediately told me that $50 would be the cost of the pendant and this would be automatically withdrawn from my bank account. Please note that this equipment and pendant is very old and I know that if I had it to send back it would be discarded. I was happy to see that technology has come a long way. I now have a service with a pendant that has allows direct communication with a representative and best of all has GPS so it works where ever I am. There is no equipment to install and I do not need a land line. Apparently Life Alert now has a device that works in a similar way but is 3 x more expensive than the present system I am using, which has very good reviews and is recommended by my medical insurance company. The new pendant is not that expensive to buy but was actually paid for by my insurance company. Comparing my current service with the many other services that offer the same new technology reveals very good reviews. Amazon has many of these companies on their website. The company I am working with was easy to use, the representatives were very informative and friendly. I am very pleased with my new pendant and most happy that if I have a problem while shopping or driving I can get help immediately. If I could remove that one star I would!! Have had this service for my mother for several years, foolishly. Our situation is unusual because she spends time with each of her three children which means that the unit is in motion most of the time. We have called for help on many occasions and while there have been a few pleasant experiences the majority of our calls have been met with indifference. Their service is much more expensive than most others and reading reviews, really not worth the extra expense. We have done some research and found several other companies that get great reviews who are a fraction of the price we are currently paying. So today I called to see if they had any flexibility. I did initially have a helpful agent who tried unsuccessfully to help. Once learning that they were going to continue to charge me considerably more than other more highly rated services inquired about canceling and at this point he became somewhat snide, suggesting that it was more important for me to save money than worry about the safety of my mother. Ignored it the first time, brushed it off the second, shut it down the third and fourth time and then thanked him for reminding me that money was more important than my mother's safety. He responded by making a comment about my sharp tongue. That was the end of the conversation and we will be canceling our service and moving to another company. Take our experiences and save yourself from being overcharged and best of all....talked down to. I would like share the horrible experience that I had with Life Alert. I started the cancellation on 7-22-2019. I was advised that the billing would continue until a letter was received from the assisted living that my Mother was really in Assisted Living. Then they would not stop the billing until the equipment was received. One piece was missing while in transit to the hospital. The other two pieces they received. The billed me $95.00. The Piece was finally recovered and I mailed back. They received that piece on 9-13-2019 but they would not return my money. The tracking number showed that it was received at there facility. But they could not find it. Several of the representatives said that it was received. In all this time I have spoken to 7 reps. Then the worst experience was the Supervisor Albert. When speaking to him I advised that the tracking number showed that it was received. He said that no one ever told me that, even though I gave him the names of the reps that did. He then called me a liar. To add more insult to injury. He said that I had to go to the post office for more proof. He would not accept the tracking number. Went to the post office and obtained more documentation was going to email but they refused to give me the address. They gave me several fax numbers and they didn't work, finally got one number to work but still had to threaten them with going to the bank and declare fraud. Albert finally called and said that now that I did what I was suppose to do they will return my money. It still took 36 hours to receive my money. This is the worst company. When she was moved into a skilled nursing home at 95 years old, I called Life Alert to cancel her service. After being switched six times to get the right person, I was told that only my mother could cancel her service. I told the customer service rep that I can do it myself. I hung up and went to the back and stopped the automatic monthly payments. I packed all the junk in a box and mailed it back to them. These people are like roaches, they never quit calling my moms old number that was referred to my number. That refuse to accept that their services were no longer wanted. I think it is really important that i write this review. I have had nothing but a wonderful, warm ad caring relationship with the people from Life Alert. I have had 2 major incidents where I was in big trouble. Like in the commercial, I needed help fast. The kind folks at Life Alert soothed me because I was so afraid waiting for the paramedics. It did not work for her as she does not like to wear the monitor and it became pointless. I have a few problems with this company.. When I went to end my fulfilled contract it took 3 phone transfers and a lot of my time to even get to the Retention Department. The sales people there are VERY rude and will try everything to try to keep you as a customer. I found this very uncomfortable and don't feel I have to defend why I would never want to work with them anymore... I am a RN, care manager, guardian for a patient with a Life Alert system. I called multiple times and left messages to discontinue his service since he is now in an assisted living. I finally wrote a scathing letter about the lack of response and received a phone call. Now, another hoop! The facility the patient lives at has to write a letter stating that he has an "emergency pendant" at his new residence. I was appalled at the lack of response and the request for documentation. I know that if I was calling for an installation the phone call would have been returned immediately. What service after the sale? What would this senior with dementia do if I had not been here to help him? He would have been billed for Life Alert into perpetuity. I purchased Life Alert for my mother in law and father in law who live in North Carolina. The peace of mind the family now has is priceless. They are both elderly in their early 90s and live alone, both are still active and think they are invincible. The fact that Life Alert took all their medical information and medications, and knowing that all this information is relayed to the paramedics when they need help is amazing! They still drive and have the GPS device, which never needs to be charged! They both forget to charge their cell phones often, and while shopping for a medical device, I found Life Alert is the only company that the GPS NEVER needs charging, which was a big relief in itself. My mother had life alert and when she passed away I called to discontinue service. The rep on the phone would not accept discontinuing. I told her then there would be no further payment. She said it comes out of my mom's acct automatically. I told her the account by law is frozen and no payments will be going to anyone. I had problems before but I thought it would be better since it was quite a number of years ago. I never set the unit up. I said I wanted to send it back. They said they would send me a shipping tag but since I was in and out of the hospital I never saw it. I came to find out they were taking money from my account. When I asked for a copy of what I signed stating I gave permission for this they could not produce it. Of course. I never signed anything. Now it was recorded. OK so I can get a copy of the recording. No not that either. OK send me a copy of all the bills. At least I can try and have the bank see if they can do anything. read more
