A vibrant hub for arts and community engagement the Elizabeth Seton Center, located at 1900 Pioneer…read moreAvenue in Pittsburgh, PA, is a beacon of inspiration and service in the local community. Drawing upon the vision of Mother Elizabeth Seton, the center was established to offer a diverse range of programs and resources, including child-care services, senior services, and music and theater programs. Through these offerings, the Elizabeth Seton Center has become an integral part of the Pittsburgh area, fostering creativity, learning, and intergenerational connections. I've been here in several occasions and have been impressed with their continuing support of the arts and the community. Most recently to attend the very first play that my son, daughter, and son-in-law performed together in. It was a very well done production by The Heritage Players of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. It is a fantasy play based on C.S. Lewis's novel, depicting the magical adventures of the Pevensie siblings in Narnia. They discover a wardrobe that transports them to this enchanted realm, where they aid the lion Aslan in defeating the evil White Witch and restoring peace. This timeless story, filled with magic, love, and courage, that was captivating. Catherine & Alan played Mr. & Mrs. Beaver and Matt played a guard to the evil White Witch. Rooted in the legacy of Mother Elizabeth Seton, the first American-born saint and the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, the center is committed to providing compassionate care and support for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. In keeping with this mission, the Elizabeth Seton Center offers high-quality child-care services, creating a nurturing environment for young children to grow, learn, and thrive. The center also places a strong emphasis on senior services, providing essential resources and opportunities for older adults to engage in social, cultural, and educational activities. Through these programs, seniors can participate in stimulating and enriching experiences that promote physical and mental well-being while fostering meaningful connections with others. In addition to its focus on child and senior care, the Elizabeth Seton Center has established itself as a premier destination for music and theater enthusiasts in Pittsburgh. The center's performing arts programs provide opportunities for participants of all ages to explore their creative potential and develop their talents in a supportive and inclusive environment. Home to the Heritage Players, a community theater group with a rich history of producing diverse and engaging productions, the Elizabeth Seton Center's theater programs bring the magic of live performance to local audiences. Through this collaboration, the center contributes to the vibrant arts landscape in Pittsburgh while offering a platform for performers to share their passion and skill with the community. The theater area is a spacious 300-seat auditorium with a excellent sightlines but the seating is old school wood and the acoustics can be challenging due to the high ceilings and the shear size of the auditorium The Elizabeth Seton Center's musical offerings further highlight the organization's commitment to promoting the arts and community engagement. Through concerts, workshops, and other events, the center fosters a deep appreciation for music and encourages both emerging and established musicians to showcase their talents. Bottom line: The Elizabeth Seton Center is a vital institution that exemplifies the values of its namesake, Mother Elizabeth Seton. With a strong dedication to child and senior care, as well as a deep commitment to promoting the arts through music and theater programs, the center continues to make a profound impact on the lives of Pittsburgh residents. By providing a welcoming space for learning, creativity, and growth, the Elizabeth Seton Center remains a true gem in the heart of Pittsburgh.

It is host to the Heritage Players who put on live performances throughout a year. I've seen my sister do productions with a couple of theather groups throughout the years. I would have to say this has to be the best one by far. The theather is old and has a bit of a 1950's nostalgia feel to it. I'm all for nostalgia but they could use some better seating. I was satisfied with the stage area acoustics and lighting making for a perfecting musical or play experience. If you're wanting any concessions for the show it's not really anything special as it's reminiscent of a table we'd see at elementary school functions consisting of candy bars sodas & a few other little snacks. But did offer a little alcohol. I would strongly recommend to BRing CAsh as consesions doesn't accept cards. I don't know about tickets as my sis gave me those free. I'd love to spectate some plays here in the future. I actually enjoyed myself a bit & will look into what else this Center has to offer. A nice place to hold events like todays for the dragon dance for Lunar New Year on 2-16-25…read more Parking is free but very hard to find when there's a big event bc it's just one lot on the ground street floor so it's best you find street parking a walk a bit which is not terrible and good exercise. It's nestled in a residential neighborhood. I love it that this center promotes culture and diversity and learning about each other ... and so many non Chinese Americans also attended this event. The Levinson room was packed w people outside the room. Thank you. I don't have any other experience w this center other than this event so I can't speak for everything else.

I got the premium membership…read more I have UPMC health insurance and can get an Active and Fit subscription with them to lower the cost of many gyms. I'll share because there is no place I could find out in advance of their pricing system. A premium membership allows use of their premium locker room, with a steam room, a sauna, and a whirlpool. It also includes all the classes, and the recovery room that holds various message implements. A very cool feature. A standard membership gives a basic locker room, and each class is paid for individually. Both memberships have access to weight and cardio rooms, indoor basketball court that turns into a pickleball court, and indoor pools. I believe that's how it goes. They run a Black Friday deal that removes the $149 enrollment fee. Along with 20% off for the first year. The standard individual membership is $67 per month. The premium individual membership is an additional $43 per month. The UPMC Active and Fit subscription is $28 per month. This gives a free standard membership at the JCC. The thing is, once you have the Active and Fit subscription, they increase the premium membership from $43 to $61 per month. So all in instead of pay the $96 per month (which includes the 20% off), for the premium individual membership, I pay $89 monthly. So the Active and Fit saves $7 per month. Not a lot. But, over a year, that is $84, so almost the cost of one month. Ok. It took all afternoon to sign up for the Active and Fit through UPMC. This type of pricing at the JCC felt like I was buying a used car that was about to become a lemon. It felt slimy and like I was signing up to get taken advantage of. Like a dreadful regret would soon be my companion. In addition, parking is $1.50 per hour, or there is some street parking that may be free. So that can add to the cost of a membership quickly. Which is unfortunate because the overall facility seems good. There are almost no windows that that look outside. The cardio, weights, exercise, recovery, and locker rooms have no windows. So it kind of feels like a series of basement rooms. That is not good. I imagine it is because it is an older building. Each room felt like it had weathered its share of hard use. The premium women's locker room entrance room is stocked with Starbucks coffee and a filtered water dispenser. This first room in the premium locker room is bland and needs to be improved. I appreciate the filtered water because I drink tons when I use the steam, sauna, and whirlpool. I was able to refill my bottle throughout my stay. There is no premium feel about this entrance room however. There are two tables, some nice magazines, and a kitchenette. Again, no windows, no plants, no comfy chairs, no luxe at all. No mirrors to shine light around to make it seem brighter than a basement. It is underwhelming. I heard the men's premium locker room has a pool table. It seemed messy and a bit dirty. There was a different woman on the floor each time I entered. I think they were stretching? Maybe they didn't want to stretch in a coed setting? It seemed unappealing to sit in there and read a magazine. Although, I did want to as they had an issue of The Sun, my favorite magazine. There are No Talking on Cell Phone signs all around the locker room and each time I went into this first room of the locker room, (6 times), women were talking on their cell phones. So, like most environments there are people that can claim the exception. I know I'm not one. I am a new member and was definitely made to feel like one. I said hi to every woman I crossed in the locker room. Only one said hi back. I must have walked past 25-30 women. It's Pittsburgh. And so it goes. The most highly insular place I've ever been to. I do actively look forward to getting in my time in that steam, sauna, whirlpool room, above all, this winter. Until I get my own steam, sauna and whirlpool at my home, I'll be there surviving this cold. Being that it is tied to a religious society though, I did expect it to be more welcoming.

I enjoyed coming to visit her with our other sister. We always felt welcomed. We found the place to be always clean, the staff friendly and the activities enjoyable. They had a guy sing & play an accordion one time of "oldies but goodies" & it was in their activity room. And yes, we sang along!! So fun! At times, I'd bring us an "indoor picnic" (food from home) to a small dining room area for us to enjoy. My sister felt like we were visiting her in her home. I could tell that she was treated with respect and kindness. The Nursing staff & even the Welcoming Greeter Terri who has visitors sign in, knew my sister well. They make time for each resident to get to know them. I'd recommend anyone wanting their loved one needing skilled nursing care as a final residence to consider Halcyon Senior Living.

What they do here is not a small feat. What goes into to what they accomplish here is many man hours of a dedicated workforce. On top of those that are employed this place also depends on the many that walk through those doors and chip in whenever they can. While here I was told that some of the volunteer days that they have planned are booked months in advance. The facility is top notch and runs like a well oiled machine. However they have said that they have already outgrown this facility space. Even though that may be the case, they don't let that stop their mission. The families that the GPCFB reach are many and without them would not be able to maintain a home life that is perceived as normal. What little you can give is greatly appreciated and there are donation bins inside the front doors. Did you know that they get more donations for items that are considered junk food than healthy food items? That trail mix does seem nutritious, but what really helps them out was that fruits, vegetables, meat and the like.

It is difficult to think about the fact that adults and children here in the States are going to sleep with pangs in their stomachs. It's easier to think about where to get good pho instead. In 2009 it was reported that over 50 million Americans were living in "food insecure" households. It's cliche to ask this, but have you ever in your life had to wonder where your next meal might come from? I hope you haven't, but if you have, that's food insecurity. For some, the situation is temporary. For others it's a chronic hardship. In these dire, murky economic times where the gulf between the wealthy and the impoverished is only growing, food banks are as essential as they've ever been, and The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has been meeting that need throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania for more decades than I've been alive. Annually, the Food Bank allocates 21 million pounds of food from their Duquesne warehouse via manifold avenues not limited to senior citizen centers, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and pantries. And if you think that you will never find yourself relying on a food bank to feed you or your family, you should read this article from late last year... http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/11/22 Hunger is spreading, even into the supposedly lush, insulated suburbs. Food banks can help stifle and even reverse that tragic advancement. After all, you never know when the rug you're standing on will be yanked right out from under your feet, and yes it could be YOU someday. So, if you're not going to donate food or funds to the address above out of a concern for those who are not as privileged as you are, do so out of self-interest. As long as we support our local food banks, they will continue to be there for all of us if and when we need them. If you can't afford to give money, take a look inside your cupboard. Are you really planning on making something with that can of Cream of Mushroom Soup?
