There just wasn't a lot to do at this year's Luminaria. I have been a couple of times in the past…read moreand had a great time. There just wasn't a lot to experience this year. Totally not impressed. There was one spot for beer, and they weren't very adventurous on the food items. They had chicken or beef kebabs for $10, some gorditas, and hot pretzels, but not a whole lot more. We got there early and went into one of the venues to watch an awesome local band called Slowpoke who had two guest violinists, and a cellist. They were really great, and it was the highlight of the evening. When we emerged however, Hemisfair Park was PACKED to the hilt with people. The food and drink booths took credit cards, so that was a huge plus. I'm going to take a pass on Luminaria or the next few years in hopes that they improve.

A bit underwhelming…read more When I visited Grotto, I was a little disappointed. The Grotto is a small section of the Riverwalk that is designed as a man-made rock grotto. You can walk under the cave to view a waterfall and fountain. I am not sure if it was construction or a poorly built safety rail, but the pathway surrounding the installation was lined with cheap-looking PVC pipes and buckets filled with concrete. It really took away from the art installation. The photos really make the Grotto seem larger and more robust than it actually is. Once you walk under it, the main attraction (the face and fountain) is actually quite small. I would only really visit if you're in the Pearl-Midtown area, otherwise I would not recommend going out of your way to see it.

No, they are not real fish, but a beautiful art installation. I visited during the day, but I hear that they light up and are a sight to behold at night. I also hear that there are lots of bats that take flight right around sundown from the bridge and it's a neat thing to experience. I'll have to come back another time to check it out for myself. But the daytime view wasn't too shabby.

What a beautiful gem in the heart of downtown. Hemisfair throughout the last ten years has evolved…read moreso much and has become a staple for the city. Not only does Hemisfair have plenty of children friendly activities including a splash pad and children's museum, but their paleta shop is so good. This is one of the prettiest parks you can ever come across. Nowadays they have plenty of dining spots and bars so go out and explore.

This is also where the dia de Muertos annual event takes place and recently we went to an Asian food festival.

This is a public work of art in an unlikely place- under the freeway. It takes advantage of the…read moreweird spot between Theo and Malone on I-35. You have to visit this place at night, when the lights are on to appreciate this at all. It's reminiscent of the changing lights display on the east side of downtown @ 281. There are chandeliers hanging from the busy freeway above that are lit up to cast long, weird shadows. The lights and shapes change as the traffic flows overhead. It's a cool place to hang out and relax. The fixtures are all upcycled bicycle parts- gears and wheels and such. The traffic flowing overhead just adds to the effect. For maximum hypnotic effect, go to the gas station across the street and grab a 40 oz while you take in the art here. It's worth checking out, especially if you're on a bicycle. This display won the Transformative Design Award @ SXSW when it was built in 2013.

There's so much more that the Pearl has to offer. On the weekend, they run one of the best Farmers Markets in the city, and when that's not going on, it's a fantastic space to exist with places like Bakery Lorraine and Local Coffee for some drinks and pastries, Pullman Market or Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery for some good eats, Lick if you need a little treat, Jazz, TX for JAZZ MUSIC, and of course, Stable Hall for an incredible space with a consistently fantastic lineup. That's just the tip of the iceberg at the Pearl. The former spot for the Pearl Brewery has become one of the best mixed-use spaces in the 210. There is now the recently opened Pearl Putt mini-golf space for a quick recreational activity, Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott, cute locally-owned shops, plenty of green spaces to run around in and relax, a book shop, a wine bar, and so much more. There are plenty of outdoor bars, with some connected to the larger establishments, to grab a drink at and wander. The Pearl District is the new Riverwalk without feeling like a tourist trap. The shops here aren't your typical shops you find at the mall which makes the pearl really attractive to me. Ambiance: 5 stars I truly adore the outdoor concept of the pearl as it's beautiful done. Including greenery, fountains and outdoor seating. It's all very pretty and well put together. Each store front looks very timeless and elegant. Despite this, it also makes for a harsh visit during the summer and most shops do close before sun set so that's a little bummer but if you pick your day wisely all is perfect!

We arrived before our noon appointment, checked in with multiple employees, and waited. At 12:20, after receiving no updates, we were finally told Mia wouldn't be available until around 1:00. We left. I didn't receive any follow-up until I reached out myself days later. Things happen, but the lack of communication and professionalism made my decision to celebrate elsewhere very easy. And thankfully, I did. Chama Gaucha gave me the experience I had hoped for from the beginning. The communication, service, and attention to detail were phenomenal, and my 30th birthday celebration was everything I wanted it to be. So, one year later: thank you, Tower of the Americas, for dropping the ball and THANK YOU, CHAMA GAUCHA, for picking it up.
