The original home was absolutely breathtaking and you could tell much attention to detail was involved in choosing antiques which adorned the home as well as the basement. I didn't make it to the pool house but heard it was also lovely. The food was superb and the evening was just incredible. I learned later that this Plantation was recently reopened to the public after some updating and refurbishing. It is truly a gem in Charles City and a perfect location for couples who are getting married in Williamsburg but would like a more private affair for their reception. The pictures online absolutely do NOT do it justice. Our family of 3 (2 adults and a teenager) spent EIGHT days at this B&B and the location was beyond expectation! This place is a nature lover's dream. We listened to red wing blackbirds, cardinals, and great crested flycatchers sing to us from the trees. A Momma turkey brought her line of tiny babies out to walk across the yard several days in a row. Little boxed turtles scuttled across the yard. Deer popped in and out, frolicking around the property throughout the day. We watched a bald eagle sit in the tree nearby. Fish would jump in the water, herons would dive in and kayakers and small fishing boats went floating by. The pool was beautiful and immaculately kept. We stayed in the two bedroom Roosevelt retreat. It was beautiful! Beds were incredibly comfortable and the rooms were very spacious. The shower had cascading upper showerheads and mid level jets (similar to a high end luxury spa I once visited in Arizona). There was a jetted tub, luxurious shower products, comfy robes and slippers. Rooms were made every day and we were left mints on our pillows. What we loved even more than the beautiful location was the owners themselves. Paige and Mark felt like family by the end of our stay (the kind of family you LIKE to spend time with). They were incredibly generous, thoughtful, and kind. We found ourselves lingering over breakfast with them because they were just such lovely people. They made suggestions on restaurants (including the half price fish and chips!), places to see, things to maybe avoid. Watching them in the kitchen was like having a personal chef for an amazing breakfast every single morning. Everything from eggs benedict, breakfast quesadillas to a traditional English breakfast - never the same thing twice. On our last day, Mark asked our son if he had any special requests and our son opted for a second round of Frank Sinatra's favorite breakfast sandwich (who knew - but it was AMAZING!). They even wrapped up our leftover breakfast food each day so we could snack on it later. They offered hot coffee and orange juice every morning. We also had access to coffee, tea and various tasty snacks throughout the day. I ate way too many yummy brownies and cookies, and my son inhaled Paige's banana muffins. She even made an extra batch so he could take some home on the day we left. This was Southern hospitality and high class luxury at it's finest. Everything about this place was top notch. It was actually HARD to leave because we loved Paige and Mark and their little slice of heaven so much. I cannot recommend this place enough!!

The technician also changed the battery in our door lock which was nice of him as he noticed it was low. Our kids also enjoyed the 24 hour game room there and I also liked that they had a small gym. They have a small kid friendly water park with a slide which could use some updating. They offer free towels there and also had a small playground behind it. They also offer free laundry service but there is a washer and dryer in the condo as well which was nice. The amount of space to put all your clothes is also insane- so much storage!! Our family had a great time here and would recommend to other families. I will say that the walls are a little thin as another reviewer did mention and they did try to sell us time share but we just went about our day. I also liked how they offered luggage carts around the property and had plenty of parking.

Everyone was friendly and check-in was fast and efficient. Our room was located in the 300 building and not on the ground floor as I requested. My first impression of the room was very positive. It was very clean, modern, and had all the amenities that we would need. The kitchen had pots, pans, plates, utensils, knives, and all the basics. The refrigerator was clean and empty. Bonus for leaving sample sizes of dish soap, dishwashing machine pods, and laundry detergent. The living room had a pull-out sofa. My kids said it wasn't the most comfortable but they are kids and they will survive. The master bedroom had a king-size bed. I found it comfortable but my husband said it wasn't. The bathroom was large, with a double sink. I was happy with the shower but my only complaint about the room was lack of a door on the shower. It was like half of a sliding door or something. Kinda weird, in my opinion. The location is very close to Bush Gardens and Water Country USA, so we were in for a treat with the weekend fireworks display. I was a little hesitant about this place initially as there weren't many reviews available. However, I would definitely book this spot with confidence. When we return to Williamsburg, I would definitely stay here again.

This was a terrific choice. We stayed in the John Rolfe room, which was a second-floor room with a king bed. Every room has a private bath, but we found that this room, original to the home, had a slightly larger bath than some of the others. The owner and host at breakfast was a terrific guy with a great sense of humor, broad knowledge, and a wealth of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. The breakfast was very good and each day featured coffee and orange juice along with healthy selections from the gardens. One day, we had scrambled eggs, ham, and fruit. Another breakfast featured a spinach quiche with home fries and fruit. One small word of caution. If you are a hearty breakfast eater who enjoys bagels, toast, and pancakes in large quantities and intends to skip lunch and have dinner around 6:30 pm, rethink that plan. You will have to stop for lunch or, at the very least, plan to have snacks with you. In fact, the breakfast area had a supply of chocolates and snacks, such as corn chips, popcorn, and potato chips, to take along. The location, right on Jamestown Road across from the College of William and Mary, was only 1/2 mile from Colonial Williamsburg and 5 miles from the Jamestown Settlement and Archaeological Site. Even with a 7-year-old and two seniors, it was an easy walk to Colonial Williamsburg and a short drive to just about any restaurant you would like, from fast food to a variety of cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Italian. I have no reservations in recommending this bed-and-breakfast.

First of all, there was an instruction card that came with the reservation however while it did indicate that there is a backdoor, it did not inform that this was the 'main' entrance. There is very limited parking and if you want to park across at the church on or the street, you are at risk of towing. They have no passes for parking in these locations. The beds are their own issue. If you are vertically challenged, you will have great difficulty getting into the main beds. We stayed in a 'suite' (I use this term laughingly as it was just two connecting rooms) that had another room with twin beds. While the main bed seemed to have a mattress from the last century, the twin beds were ancient. The "pillows" that they give you are quite literally flatter than a pancake they would serve you for breakfast. The suite we stayed in was in the front of the house and there is no insulation to cancel ANY of the traffic noises from outside. It was very very stuffy inside and I wasn't able to open a window. We asked for a step stool and were given one that wasn't even as high as a normal step on a staircase. It was still very difficult to get in to the bed. At no time while I was there did I see, hear or meet the host/hostess of the B&B. The only time we met any employee was in the morning during breakfast. These ladies were AMAZING. They almost made up for the lack of any other service or greeting in their friendliness. The breakfast was late the day I was there. There are signs everywhere stating that it would be served at 8:30 but it was closer to 9:30. I'm an early riser so this was a bit of an inconvenience. At least the coffee was available. They had eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, toast, cereal etc. It was set up as a buffet style in a very stylish area of the serving area. The dining room table is gorgeous but there are no placemats to put your plates on, I felt very worried about scratching this gorgeous table. The non guest rooms were fit with comfy areas to just relax and chill after a day of being a tourist. The furniture may not have been the most comfortable, but given how cozy each area was this was easily forgiven. I really enjoyed that each room had a Christmas tree already set up. This is not very handicapped friendly as no matter which way you enter, there are very old steps. The front steps were especially bad. To sum up; Parking; F Comfort; B Room Comfort: C+ Breakfast: A Location: A- Price: C (for our experience it was really really pricey)

From my home in Virginia Beach it was around an hour without much traffic. I planned this trip on a day that my kids had off school. Unfortunately we got a much later start then I hoped and was unable to cover all of the park. Our adventure started at the Smithfield Station entrance on a sunny mid 60's afternoon in November. Immediately your taken with the beauty of the area. Not to mention Fall in Virginia made this a special day with the foliage unfolding right before our eyes. We took the trail up to Windsor Castle and explored the exterior of the old barns and even the house thanks to a super nice City of Smithfield employee in the home. I snapped some pics of the house and was surprised to find out it is to be sold off by the city to a private party. The structure has really terrific bones, but is in need of a few million to renovate. What was more shocking is the antiques that were located in the non climate controlled home. A pre Civil War piano was the most noticeable YIKES! The area to be sold off includes all the barns and vineyard. Before we headed into Smithfield for a tour we enjoyed going down to the water at a overlook area. The scenery is very stunning and on a warm Fall day was even better. What was very disappointing was the amount of trash every where just below where we were standing. Lots of beer cans, bottles and debris in this beautiful marsh. Trash was also on the decking area with a trash can just feet away. We cleaned up the trash on the deck before leaving. The city, or a volunteer effort needs to get this cleaned up. Most certainly we need another trip back to this park to take in all of what is offered. I hope the next time we return a serious clean up effort has taken place. I mentioned. It is also quite shocking that Smithfield is selling off such a treasure in Windsor Castle. I am unaware of the budget constraints, or politics of Smithfield to really say more than what I have mentioned. On this visit we only scratched the surface of this stunning recreational area. Beautiful town, beautiful park and a must area to check out.

Also as…read morepreviously stated, the hosts, especially John, do have an encyclopedic knowledge of the history here in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Some further things to consider as you decide whether to make this place your stay while in Williamsburg: 1. Breakfast takes at least an hour as John will ask you where you are going for the day and then regale you with stories of the location, watching you as you eat. If you're a history buff with a deep love for stories and a desire to be fully engaged at 8am, this is the place for you. If you like to drink your coffee in silence while you slowly wake up, it may not be. 2. Ask a question, however small, about any part of the house or object in the house and a story is tied to it. Sometimes one story launches into another and it's hard to get away. 5 min or 30 min, you never know how long and politely extricating yourself can be difficult. It is delightful that every part has meaning, but this style may not be for everyone 3. There are English Country dances Tuesdays and Thursdays which they strongly recommend you joining in. Even should you choose not to go, the bedrooms are right off the ballroom and the dancing goes till 10pm. This may not be for everyone 4. There is a house rabbit that stays primarily in the kitchen with the millers but during breakfast is allowed to roam the main floor freely. Depending on whether you're allergic, this may not be for you. 5. The mattresses are hard and the pillows are quite firm. This is to my liking but may not be to yours 6. There is rooms are somewhat cooled. If you're used to sleeping at 75 degrees, shouldn't be a big deal. If you like to sleep at 65, you'll be quite warm. Overall, if you're looking for a warm, inviting place with hosts that will catch you whenever they see you to chat by sharing their stories and delight in living in Williamsburg, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet uninterrupted holiday, you may want to look elsewhere.

Newport House is, as promised, walking distance to the places you will want to see in Williamsburg. It is across the street from William & Mary, if you are visiting there. The phrase "museum quality" likewise applies. If you enjoy history, and learning things, you'll enjoy the many stories and insights gracious owner John F. Millar can provide. You just need to ask questions. He's more than happy to share. He also will be dead on where it comes to where to eat, how much time to budget for various attractions, what is worth seeing, and what to avoid. Ask about the spoon bread at Christiana Campbell's. It's worth tasting. Aside from his personal connection to "Master and Commander" and "Pirates of the Caribbean II," John is a reliable guide where it comes to exploring Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Aside from the dwelling and the furnishings, even breakfast will be a historically accurate experience. Ask hostess and wife Cathy Millar (also very friendly) about Josephine Bunnyparts and house rabbits. Or bee keeping, if you prefer. Newport House does not accept credit cards, so keep that in mind. If you want accommodations that are in keeping with the Colonial Williamsburg experience, Newport House is for you. If you like learning things, it's even better.

I made reservations for me and my friend. It was a lovely drive ... At first... the gps directions are awful. I was taken down a road which was designated as peace hill - but we ended up at a red house, no one there, then we called and got even worse directions. The woman on the phone told us to go by the "red hen house" and through the woods... it was barely a road, full of tree roots, dirt path, and rocky terrain. After a 1/2 hour, we finally made it and end up at the back of the building. Come to find out, if she had just told us to go back to the main road and keep going 1/4-1/2 or so, we'd see the other entrance to the main house. Not a great first impression. The grounds were lovely and the farm animals gave a pastoral vibe. Inside was pretty too, but we were led to a rather secluded back room full of wool and yarn. Not that it wasn't cozy, but quite different from the dozens upon dozens of tea rooms I've been to. The lady who was "minding the store" didn't seem like she knew what she was doing. It took ages to get our teas and the tea (earl grey) tasted bland and stale, the soup was a putrid green (inedible) and while we were waiting we heard her chatting on the phone. Anyway, she wasn't the owner, so maybe she was new or just helping out?? The tea tier arrived and it looked nice... the sandwiches were good, basic cucumber, egg salad, and a pesto, with a mini ham biscuit... the scones were not good - sorry - but they were served with loads of cream and jam yet they should be served plain and the "condiments" on the side. My friend who can't have the toppings and preferred a plain scone, asked for a plain one. The lady said it would take 20 minutes . Which it did, and longer. All and all, it wasn't a very relaxing experience. I took some nice pictures, and we enjoyed the surroundings, but the afternoon tea service itself was mediocre. Sadly, we were disappointed, and I really wanted to love this place since I had heard good things... I'm sure the bed and breakfast side of the experience is probably much better. The sheep, the goats, the wool, the crafts, the pasture raised products, the farm life... that is your best bet from the other reviews I've read, but maybe you'll have a better tea time than we had. We might have to give this place another try and see if it improves.

The soup was a tomato soup which was ok but definitely didn't taste like tomato. In general we were disappointed in the food. The tea selection wasn't my favorite. I would have preferred a milder blend to go with the food rather than the choice of two strong flavors.
