Entry to the main room, welcomes the guest with rustic feel, coupled with clean and bright environment. Greeted immediately with a smile and ushered to a table of our choice. Our waitress was quick to the table and our party of 3 ordered Shredded beef Chimichanga and Chile Rellenos. Our expectations were tempered by being out of Towner's from Texas, avid home cooks and a having cultivated tastes for real Mexican food. The Food arrived quickly, plated wonderfully, served at perfect temp. The Chile Rellenos impressed from the first look. Large chilies in a light sauce, not some canned Chile covered in cheese so commonly served in lesser restaurants. Then, the first bite.. first thought.. a complex flavor of the Anaheim peppers, Monterey jack cheese and the salsa was a perfect balance, with not just one flavor overpowering the other. The textured created with the breading and a quick fry resulted in a great taste. The Chimichanga was requested with shredded beef , and the surprise was.. the shredded beef.. it was truly like momma Marquez used to make.. slow cooked, tender, huge chunks of simple flavorful roast beef in a nice fried tortilla. The entrees served, and well on the way to being devoured, our waitress has checked in several times...when a gentleman presented himself asking about our dinner, and asking if there was anything else we desired.. Food was HORRIBLE! The sauce was clearly jarred... and not even a good jar. This restaurant must think that they can put a tortilla and sauce on food and call it Mexican! It was just disgusting. Ok so we are back home visiting and decided to go out for some dinner. Let me tell you.... no bueno all the way around. Our waitress was not good whatsoever. We had to constantly ask her two or three times for things because she kept forgetting, I asked about a few of the menu items and she could not tell me anything about them so I went with the chimichanga special, which turned out to be just a burrito, because it was not fried!!! This is one of our favorite "go to" Mexican Restaurants...especially when the Owners' garden is producing Anaheim peppers for their yummy version of a Chile Relleno, which is delicious! More of a family atmosphere, with wooden booths and individual tables. Comfortable, fast, friendly service with reasonable prices. We like to have a Margarita or Mexican beer while sitting outside and looking at the huge pepper and tomato garden, and the cute bunnies who hop out of it! My wife and I have been dining here for a decade or more. It's a family run restaurant in what used to be a 7-11 convenience store. The staff has turned over little through the years and is consistently quick and friendly. The homemade chips and salsa are the best around. The fresh garden poppers, from fresh jalapeno's grown in the garden behind the restaurant, are fantastic - though the level of heat can vary quite a bit from one popper to the next. I've had pretty much everything on the menu over the years and it's always consistently prepared well and very tasty. A quick list of my favorites include any shredded beef entree (chimichanga, burrito, etc..), green chili, fish tacos and beef tacos. The rice and bean sides are always fresh and warm. Oh, and the house margarita is great also. Quite honestly I'm surprised at the number of negative reviews here. We've eaten at all of the Bellevue area Mexican restaurants, including Le Mesa, Ixtapa, etc..., and this is easily our favorite. Honestly, it's probably deserving of 4 stars because there is some room for improvement, but I give it 5 stars in an attempt to counter some of the unfair (in my estimation) 1 and 2 star reviews. read more

The only item I have had that is worthwhile are the Rellenos and only in the summer when they grow their own peppers. All of the other items basically taste the same as one and other. Lil' Burro is a regular stop for my wife and me. In all the times we have been there I can not recall a single time we've had anything other than a great experience. The food is fantastic and the service is quick. We are both fanatics for their shredded beef enchiladas. Their queso is a great starter, but its not uncommon to have your meal served before you can finish it. Went out with the family to what we thought was going to be a nice lunch, everything sounded good until we got our food. My husband got the combo platter number 3 and in the menu it clearly says it comes with a green sauce, with pork meat. When my husband got his plate it was a brown gravy sauce that looked as if it was in the fridge too long. When the owner came out she stated it was more of a gravy than sauce and also said "I know it's not the kind of food you're used to eating, but my normal clientele don't have a problem with this." Which my husband took offense to. Just because he was Hispanic she assumed he was used to other foods and that wasn't even the case, because if the food sucks then it sucks‍ my mother in law got the soft shell tacos with shredded beef and had to spit out her first bite because the meat had a fishy taste to it. To which again the owner tried to justify the shitty food with "my normal clientele don't mind." Needless to say we walked out and won't be returning. After hearing rave reviews about this place and seeing a packed parking lot every time I drove past, I decided to give it a chance. We were promptly greeted upon arriving and waited a few minutes for a table to be cleared. Once seated, we browsed a typical Mexican menu filled with enchiladas, taco combos, nachos, etc. Nothing stood out as being authentic or a specialty dish. I decided to go with the cheese enchilada plate. One would think that it would be very hard to mess up cheese enchiladas, but somehow they managed to do just that. The enchiladas were smothered in a pool of bland red sauce, the rice was dry, and the beans were covered in a layer of grease. Once our food was delivered, the waiter disappeared. We sat for a good 15 mins with empty drinks before we flagged down another server to have our drinks refilled and receive our check. This food did not sit well with me and made me sick a few hours later. My advice to others, skip this place. There are plenty Mexican restaurants in town with better service and delicious food. read more

The food here is okay. It's not the greatest, it's usually dry and not a ton of flavor. My largest complaint is the "service fee" for using any type of card. The chipotle chicken is probably their best dish but again, dry sides. If you want average Mexican food and what can only be described as "never happy" service staff... this is the place for you. Last week I took my coworker out to lunch for his birthday and Lil Burro was his place of choice. The menu consisted of standard Mexican offerings so no surprises there. The waiter was very responsive and attentive. The food was okay but nothing memorable other than the yummy salsa. That's not to say the food wasn't good because the tacos were delicious. I'm originally from Denver. So the choices for Mexican food in Omaha were not as diverse as I was used to. Thankfully we found this little gem. Skip to the bottom for specific food comments. Location: It's tucked away in the heart of Bellevue and the location makes popular with the locals. They have access close to a highway and plenty of parking. Staff: The service is fantastic. They welcome you at the door and you will find a cozy authentic Mexican feel to the restaurant. The decor is very traditional with some mid western artifacts in the mix. Its a pleasant atmosphere and feels very welcoming. Cost: The prices are extremely reasonable. A couple on a date having appetizers, dinner, and a couple drinks can easily spend less than $50 or $60. Misc: The foods is the best Mexican I have found in Omaha and one of my favorites in the states. It's always delivered hot and promptly. The waitresses are all very charming and friendly. The owners are always in the restaurant and they take a very on hands approach to customer service. They will often stop by to say hello and ask if there is anything they can do for you. Food -Appetizers: Traditional Mexican Pozole This is the best pozole I've had anywhere. It's savory and hearty and servers as a great starter. It's meaty and satisfying with a nice blend of latin flavors. Tamales This isn't an appetizer its a side. But you should try one smothered in green chili. The chili makes it a little spicy but adds tons of flavor. If's you've never had a tamale you have to try one here. It's one of the better tamales in Omaha. A tamale is essentially masa (corn meal/flour steamed with meat in the middle). It's hearty and savory. Not too spicy unless you get the chili which I recommend. Guacamole The guacamole is served fresh and slightly chunky. It goes very well with the salsa which is very mild but has a great flavor. If you ask they will bring spicy salsa for you. I like spicy things but to be honest its not as yummy as the mild. Dinner/Lunch: Tacos If you order a lightly fried taco o for the shredded chicken. It has a fantastic flavor and is very moist. Be careful though it will fall apart if you let it sit for very long. The tortilla soaks up all those delicious juices and you'll end up eating it with a fork. Which is ok too. Fajitas I love to get the fajitas. I usually order the beef and chicken combo with all the goodies. except sour cream. They come on a hot plate sizzling with sauteed onions and bell peppers. A side dish is also servers with beans, rice, and pico. You can have corn tortillas or flour. I prefer the flour. They are served warm. You can get shrimp fajitas as well but I haven't tried them. Enchiladas I always get chicken when I order enchiladas. They are very good. My kids like the beef better but I think that's because they are kids and don't know any betters lol. There are a couple different combos you can get them on. I usually just go for the 2 enchilada plate because it comes with beans and rice. The three enchilada plate doesn't. (I'm pretty sure) but you could order that on the side if you wanted. They will come smothered in a delicious enchilada sauce and melted cheese. Ask for a side of lettuce and tomato to put on them. It really finishes the dish. Steak Now I realize this is a Mexican restaurant. But to be honest sometimes my wife just doesn't want Mexican food. That's ok though because she can get a great steak at Lil Burro. Its actually her favorite place to get a steak. It will come with a potato choice and a dinner salad. You are given an option of adding a house rub called "Shane's Rub". Shane is the owner and the rub he blends is fantastic. They cook the steaks over a flame and not on a flat top grill. so you get a nice sear and yummy looking grill marks. Which brings me to their ranch dressing. The owner was telling me last night that they make their own Ranch Dressing in house. They use real buttermilk and its fantastic. Spicy Pork Burrito As I said I love spicy food. So occasionally I'll have this dish. It's one of their specials and they do it very well. It's a pork burrito that comes smothered in a spicy chili. Its not for the faint hearted. I love this burrito. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with lettuce and tomato on top unless you ask for it. Sometimes I forget then I have to wait while the waitress gets it while everyone else is digging in lol. Desserts - Sopaipilla These little fluffy puffs of heaven will cure any sweet tooth. They come lightly sprinkled with cinnamon and you pour honey on them. I think they are made with a phyllo dough. Its light and crispy and warm. I haven't have many other dishes but I have loved everything I've had there. I recommend them very highly if you are a fan of authentic Mexican foods.
