If you're looking for great old school treats then this is the place. If you are looking for a great cake for a special occasion then look elsewhere. The customer service is the worst I've seen. The older woman behind the counter is downright rude and does not care if you do business there are not. I wanted to shop local for my child's first birthday and was completely disappointed. Told them I was doing an Elmo themed birthday, but they don't really do that. Ordered a smash cake but they don't really do that either. I wanted a red smash cake and they called to confirm and I said Yes. Come the day BEFORE the party I pick up the cake and it's WHITE!!! Then they tried to blame it on me. And the cake was COMPLETELY over frosted, very little cake and horribly decorated. On the up side they spelled my sons name correctly. AVOID, if you are looking for a special cake. read more

I've been going to this bakery and their previous location in Glen Ellyn for years. Everything is so tasty and fresh. They are willing to decorate cakes to your request and have gone above and beyond for a couple of my ideas for my son's birthdays. Just ask, they can probably do it! I look forward to Paczki Day every year and know to order the prior week. This place is old school. That means it's real bakery goods, not the preservative filled, lard frosted junk you get at grocery stores and Costco. And they don't keep goods beyond a day so if you want something specific, pre-order or go early. That's how old school works! read more

Recently, I made a run in one morning and hit Seven area bakeries in 40 minutes ( aka Life: I know how to live it), selecting a variety of confections for my workplace. The list, in row of visiting: Lilac Bakery, Kuppie's, Aracely's, Azteca Bakery (in the Villa Park Fruit Market), Sweet Connections Bakery, La Luz de Marelas, and the Dominick's bakery on York and Grand (sorta counts as a bakery). Lilac was the median between the mexican bakeries (not very sweet on most of their items) and Kuppies (sugar/sweetness like there's no tomorrow). They're very good, but more expensive than either Aracely's or Azteca (5 minutes away), and excepting excellent Packzi's on Fat Tuesday, not as good as Kuppie's (also 5 minutes away). Good, but on a regular basis not my first choice in local area bakeries. read more

I have been dying to get into this bakery since we moved into the area. I finally found time early in the morning on a Friday. To my surprise, there were a ton of people already waiting in line! We browsed a little but were promptly greeted and asked what we wanted. The woman behind the counter offered my daughter a sample of cookies which was excellent because I could sample those as well! We decided to purchase doughnuts because all the reviews said they were amazing! They did not disappoint! Soft, fresh, thick, fluffy! Upon trying them, my husband (who can normally pound down a few dunkin donuts at a time) said they were very filling and he struggled to try and eat another one! They weren't very expensive and all their Danishes were the same price as the doughnuts! Awesome. I was able to sample their cookies and they were also delicious. Fresh! They didn't taste like they were sitting out all day like at some other bakeries. My eyes also saw boxes of cookies that were packaged as "no nut boxes" big plus since one of my children has peanut allergies. The staff was also very kind. They told me about the area and mentioned some of the areas other fun attractions. It made me feel very at home and happy to have such a great small business close by to support. I just finished/devoured a chocolate silk paczki and it was amazing! I have had other paczki from local bakeries. Not going to name them but I always thought the other bakeries had amazing paczki until I tried this chocolate silk from Lilac Bakery. It blows the other bakeries away! The filling was perfect - not too much. Just enough where you had filling in every bite. It wasn't dry at all. My only regret is only ordering one for myself! We did a huge group order at work and I got one for me and 3 for family members at home. read more

Visited here last January, and now just getting around to review. Purchased 4 M and M Sugar cookies. It was late in the 'bakery' day, so the cookies were a bit dry for my liking. Still okay. The prices weren't too bad (I think I paid no more than 3 dollars). I wanted an eclair because I read a review on them, but alas, they were gone. I hope to visit in the future and give them another chance. I like supporting local business, and I hope they can wow me on my next visit. read more

Please look at the dates of the reviews, they sold in 2020 or 2021. If you know what the original Lilac Bakery tasted like, you would not be able to compare them. Even when the Flour Barrel took over at least they knew quality and did not change. I am a die hard Glen Ellynite/ Lombardian and so this change hurt. The smiley cookies have changed, the ingredient quality or the ingredients themselves, not for the better. It is okay for someone who did not experience the taste from years gone by but I walked in to buy cookies by the pound and the icing has changed and the dot cookies don't even taste close to the other ones. I thought they would purchase the recipes along with the store but somehow it has all changed. I think it was a very sad day for me and I cannot say it is bad, but it is not the real Lilac Bakery that we all have loved and known. Can't say I will go back. I just went to Lilac Bakery for Paczki day! I must say I see some of these negative reviews about a bakery having cleared out shelves, but that is how most bakeries are, you have to come in early to get everything fresh and your first pick! I didn't think to preorder my Paczki today because I was only getting one to try them. (First timer) There was a line near the door of preorder pick ups and walk ins. They had a good selection of pastries as well as a wide and big selection of paczkis! Yes some of the shelves were empty but I am going to assume it's because 1. it was still early and they had just opened and 2. The paczkis probably sell a little more on Fat Tuesday. I got a fresh strawberry paczki and it was delicious, just the right amount of sweetness, light and fluffy! The service was great, they made it as efficient as possible and I was in and out of there within 10 minutes. I plan on coming back sometime to try some of their other pastries! read more

Imagine yourself, on a SATURDAY at exactly noon. You're going to visit friends and want to bring a nice little gift from a bakery. You aren't from town so you put "bakery" into google and up pops Lilac bakery. It's a little out of the way, but you're getting it for friends so who cares. You show up to the bakery only to see all of the shelves are empty with the exception of 4 different items. Which all look like they have been there for days. Just a little tip to the owners, you should probably BAKE products to SELL, especially on the weekend. This irritated me so much that I felt inclined to post a review. It's a good thing another bakery came up close to this one. It's called Balkan, and it's a stones throw from lilac. They had a great selection of baked goods. Maybe they understand that Saturday's are busy and they should prolly have things to sell. read more

We went to this bakery the other morning as we were in the area, and love to try new bakeries. We got a box of assorted danishes and donuts. They were fresh and better than Dunkin, but we all felt there was definitely something missing. We finally decided it was flavor. All the donuts tasted the same. The raspberry jelly donut had a serious chemical taste, and the almond horn had no almond paste in in. This made me very sad. The cinnamon bun had hardly any cinnamon flavor and I could go on, but I think you have the picture. Will I go back, I doubt it and that is a shame because I believe that small bakeries are usually so much more than those in the supermarkets! read more

I was doing some research trying to find a local bakery that sold eclairs, ect. with real custard because my mom requested them for her birthday. I was happily surprised to find out that the Lilac Bakery (just a few blocks from my house) had real custard! I went in on the morning of my mom's birthday and I asked the women if I could have some Long Johns with custard in them. I told her that I use to go to this bakery all the time with my mom and grandma and it was my mom's birthday and she really wanted real custard (blah blah blah). She informed me that they just had ones with out the custard in them but that she would be right back. About 5 minutes later she appeared with Long Johns that she JUST filled with custard for me and as she said "For your mom's birthday". Seriously, my mom was so pleased and the custard was delicious. The chocolate cheese coffee cake is incredible and there's nothing in the world elsewhere, like it. The old fashioned cake donuts, the butter cookies are as fresh as fresh can be, the cakes are cake worth the calories...Everything is carefully made with love and the taste proves that the bakers care about the delectable treats carrying their name. I would love if they spruced up their location or moved to a swankier spot. However, if the quality remains, I'll be a happy customer whenever I'm in the area and feel I've had enough exercise to merit one of the bakery's fine treats. read more

I've only been to Lilac a couple of times and haven't tried many pastries, but I am a huge fan of the cinnamon pecan danishes! I'm a cinnamon lover, so I can't get enough of these. A few details for your information: The bakery is a small, traditional shop, so get there early in the morning or call your order in if you want the best selection. I went in one day and was disappointed to find that someone had bought all of the cinnamon pecan danishes by 9 a.m.! Credit cards are accepted There is parking in a lot in front of and to the side of the building It's in the heart of downtown Lombard, close to Lilacia Park, train, and library If you're looking for a place to pick up some tasty morning danishes on your way to work or to share with your family/friends, this is a great place. I have been with this bakery through multiple owners and the bakery has stayed delicious. You can't go wrong with anything made with custard - coffee cake, sweet rolls. Bismarks, eclairs. The custard is delicious - real custard, not vanilla pudding. The lemon bars are to die for - the best I've ever had. I decided to try Lilac Bakery. I go ta a neighborhood bakery about once per week but lean towards Kirchbaum's in Western Springs. Based on some reviews I decided to give Lilac Bakery a try after years of not going there even though I live in Lombard. All the reviews state to get there early if you want a good selection of pastries, coffee cakes etc.. so I arrived at 6:08 A.M. as they opened at 6. I walked in and the display cases for fresh pastries were bare. There were literally 5 flavors of donuts out and that was it. No sweet rolls, no coffee cakes and very few donuts. I asked the kid working and he just said "yeah, we are still putting stuff out." I could see racks in the back with fresh baked goods, he did not ask if I was looking for something in particular just turned his back to me again so I left. I ended up at Mariano's to buy a few fresh donuts, their case was full. If you open at 6 be ready to sell by 6 otherwise adjust your opening time. I would have gone to Kirschbaum's but the do not open until 7 but are always fully stocked when they unlock the door. Won't be back, too much frustration. Can't review the product since I couldn't buy any. read more

I frequently pick up assorted boxes for the office. I enjoy the variety of fruit they use in the danishes -- not just apple and cherry, but blueberry, apricot, and many others. Their bread is also good and it's nice to get sandwich bread baked fresh rather than pre-packaged. read more

A decades long fixture in Lombard with different owners over the years. The current owner is great and judging by the pickings around 11am, a great baker too! Home made donuts are incredible. A few bucks more for a dozen compared to the local dunkins but 1000% better. The owner is also local employing local employees. During the pre lent time, they have paczki that is smart to order way ahead. That way you can save yourself a huge line with all your neighbors that Fat Tuesday. All of their pastries are incredible. When I am bringing clients cookies or a pastry, I try to get the chocolate cheese one. I always get calls back thanking me and asking where to buy this. If you need something special, you can call ahead and they should be able to have it for you on the specified day. read more

I just purchased a coffee cake from this bakery and paid a whopping $11.00 for it! It was just a simple plain 10 or 11 inch coffee cake. The dough inside was somewhat raw. Perhaps I'm out of the loop but I thought $11.00 was outrageous. read more

I just stopped at the bakery to pick up dessert for the night. I arrived at 4:48 per my phone clock and watch, schlepping my baby in a car seat. The sign on the door said open until 5, which is also what I saw online, but the door was locked. There was a young woman at the counter who was working very hard at pretending she didn't see me. There were still baked goods in the display case. Trying to run errands in bad weather with baby in tow is difficult enough without this poor customer service. I will not be going back. read more

I recently ordered a special cake for a family member's nurse pinning. I was VERY disappointed in what I got.....I ordered a 1/4 sheet cake which I was told had to be filled, starting price $30. What I received was a cake for $44, the fudge frosting cost extra, the piped on decorations were extra and not all that great. There was barely an inch of cake on each layer around the filling and so there was more frosting than cake. I will never order from this bakery again unfortunately. read more

I love this place. I got a chocolate chip danish coffee cake on a Saturday morning and it was gone in a flash. When I returned some weeks later, they were gone. I was told to order ahead, just phone a day or more ahead and whatever I want will be waiting for me. That has worked for me ever since.
