I WAS ASSAULTED BY A FEMALE EMPLOYEE (dressed in all black in…read morephotos below) AS I ENTERED THE ESTABLISHMENT HALLOWEEN OCTOBER 31st, 2025 (I have pictures and videos, as well). The video surveillance should have also captured the moment I was bear hugged, dragged through a dark hallway, and eventually thrown into a white sign outside. I received bruises and luckily nothing major happened like landing wrong on my head and getting a concussion and possible death (should I have had a bad landing after being tossed by this lady). As she grabbed me and before she threw me to the ground I pled with her that she did not need to do this, but she was very angry (probably because she was working on Halloween and saw me with 3 beautiful girls and she couldn't handle how well the costume looked on me - just speculating here.) I went to this place on Halloween 2025, by the time I was assaulted it was November 1st, 2025 because it was past midnight. I was with 3 other girls (I am a male). We waited in line to get in. I was dressed up as Spider-Man and the girl I was with was Catwoman. I am of Western European descent and maybe that was the issue, I was racially profiled by the woman hostess/bouncer because she was letting in the rest of the people except me and my crew. I proceeded to take my phone out and record her after the assault and take pictures of her so I could later report her. On top of that, there were gunshots nearby so I decided to uber home and report this later instead of right away with the owner. I am going to follow up with this place to make sure we can come to some understanding that assaulting customers is not ok and I will continue to spread the word about my experience if I am not adequately satisfied with their resolution (if there is one). Again, this place is bad news and you should stay away. I am willing to change this review if an apology and some sort of incentive is offered.

Similar to other romance or genre-specific bookstores I've visited in the past few years, Love & Other Books actually has a great range of books - all the sub-genres are covered! They all sell lots of great merchandise (hats, shirts, cards, etc.), too, so it's a great place for shopping for gifts as well as books. The customer service was also very friendly and helpful. I found a couple of books that I look forward to reading! It's a charming little bookshop, worth checking out even if you don't think a romance bookstore is your thing!

And the thing is most of the books here are very reasonably priced if not outright bargains. It might be heresy but I think I like the Northern iteration of John K King books more than the OG King store in downtown - and that too is five stars. With just one level and a layout nothing like the sprawling labyrinth of the flagship store, the Ferndale spin-off is much more manageable and browsable. Not too mention not as freezing in the winter or boiling in the summer. (I just gave my review of John K King South - now nine years old! - a quick reread and I was so reverential to that store I didn't even mention that. No crying in bookstores, I guess.) It's been far too long since I've been to JKKN. In fact I asked the sole employee tonight, wearing a bandana almost just like mine as a mask - I think his might have been midnight blue and not black - if they still had a cat. He told me no, that was before his time. I already figured it wouldn't be the same cat, but it's too bad that late feline doesn't have a successor. Bookstore cats are even more of a dying breed than old school indie bookstores like this. I came in for a cookbook or three, as it's embarrassing how little cooking knowledge and experience I have in my forties and I'm looking to step my game up. I ended up leaving with almost $70 worth of books, with a $5 2 disc DVD set of Cream in concert being part of that total. I got a John Waters hardcover memoir of hitchhiking for $8.50, well below the $26 cover price. I picked up the first collection of Walking Dead comics for $5.95, a big beautiful coffee table called Masters of American comics for $12, Academic Graffiti by W.H. Auden and some sports guidebooks from the 70s for my dad. Nothing local, St. Louis Blues, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Flames, but they're wonderfully vintage. There were also a handful of books that tempted me mightily but some modicum of self control kept me from snatching up. A book about The Stooges, one about erotic comics and one about the Cannonball cross country race are still on the shelves waiting for a lucky patron to take them home. When I finished cashing out my bandana clad clerk asked me if I wanted a bag or a box. That dude knows what's up, as I had some serious weight in that stack. Now I got a nice old Xerox box when I get my purchases filed away. The North remembers!

I visited John K. King Downtown a few years on my first visit to Detroit. I visited the King North…read morelocation last week when I was in Ferndale with my family. This location doesn't have the four floors of the downtown location, but it's still an incredible used bookstore. You walk in and you just smell old books. It's a little musty, it's packed wall to wall with books, and you can definitely find a gem here. I found two books I couldn't be parted from, while my mom found one of her own. If you don't need a particular book, but you're just in the mood for a browse, this Ferndale satellite store is worth a visit.

I've been coming to jars for years. I've been through policy changes rebranding, and overall I do…read morelike the company. I was advised from a this location that due to the inclement weather clients would need to ship at the other locations. Some clients were receiving 50% vouchers. I came from the same location and received no voucher just to find out that other clients from the same location, were getting vouchers to shop at other places. There should be fairness across the board and as someone that has been shopping with jars since they've been in Michigan. I do find it disheartening.

There's such an abundance of information and revelation at Lighthouse. There's options for any budget or gift ideas I have. The staff and in particular the owners Jack and Claude are tremendous in assisting with whatever needs of the customer. Looking forward to the day I can come in & "cash out" on a full library!!
