It's been a looooong time since we visited this spot. It was a Monday night so understandably quiet. We had good drinks (cider you can't find most places) but the Irish pub vibe wasn't there anymore. The regulars were selecting music that didn't fit the vibe, and we heard they no longer have live music any night. Monday night football was on, which is fine, but it's not the place I remember. There is perhaps no better spot in town for people watching than their front window bench seating- just a perfect spot to soak up the convivial vibes and colorful characters that frequent this spot. I was early to an appointment and decided to grab a drink at a nearby restaurant. I walked about two blocks and everything was closed. I walked by this spot and the doors were open, so I decided to stop. I was greeted as soon as I walked in, and handed the drink and food menu. I sat at the bar and ordered a Moscow Mule. I asked about the flavor of the Spicy Garlic Wings and the Bartender told me, those were her favorite. I decided to try something other than Mild, and they were so good! They weren't too garlicky, but they were spicy. It was the perfect combination! If I'm in the area, I would definitely stop by again. Josh the bartender did a good job and the Guinness pour was great. But the food was just not good. We got sliders which were way overcooked and had an odd, bland taste. The fish part of the fish and chips was over-battered and also very over-fried. The fries were ok. Finally, the chicken fingers - bland, dry, and way over-fried. The place was almost empty and for a while there was no music, so it was depressingly library-quiet at dinnertime. We live in the neighborhood but probably won't return. read more

Ive been here 2 years in a row and have had a great time. The staff is very attentive for the disasters thrown upon them that is St. Patricks Day. Surprisingly enough my work classifies this day as a national holiday so I am at the bar by 11 and in bed by 6pm, good for me. Drinks are reasonably priced here and the food menu is small but the stuff the serve is great here. I haven't been here for a football(soccer) match yet but I really need to come check it out. I've been through the Virginia Highlands tons of times, and to Atkins Park and Neighbors, but not once did I notice little old Limerick Junction, tucked squarely in the middle of all this. I found out about it because a girlfriend and I were going to a Paint Nite together and the painting and date we happened to pick was being hosted at Limerick Junction. So there we were. Our event was on a Tuesday night and although the painting was scheduled to start at 7, we got there about a half hour early to get a good spot and order some food and drinks before things got underway. Limerick Junction is a cute Irish pub in the middle of the Virginia Highlands that has a nice big bar when you enter the front door, a good smattering of tables and booths for dining and a very cute Irish owner/bartender with a sexy accent who's super nice. I didn't catch his name, but as soon as I entered and greeted my friend, he was greeting us both, and told us the specials and what was on tap as we walked up to the bar. Super nice, like I said. We looked over the menu and ordered food and drinks before walking over to the tables that were already set up with easels, paint and paint brushes. Our teacher for the evening was great, she had a pre-made picture of our project for the evening, a microphone and another plain canvas which she proceeded to paint with us, step-by-step. Once everyone had assembled, we dove right in with our teacher leading, giving tips and encouraging people to stand up periodically and see what others who were putting their own flair to their paintings were doing. It was a little tough to eat my pastrami sandwich and paint, so I ended up eating only half even though it was tasty, and taking the other half home. Our group was good - people were talented and I was happy how with how my picture turned out too. There was one guy at the bar who was actively cheering us on, and telling us how good our paintings were (I think in hopes of piquing one of the women's interests), but everyone just sort of kept doing their own things. We finished up about 15 minutes before 9, and paid our bills at the bar after cleaning up a little bit. Overall, I had a great time and Limerick Junction was very accommodating to our group and a nice spot to do it, because it wasn't too big and the teacher was able to be heard easily and give everyone attention. After a food coma-inducing dinner at Surin of Thailand, my friend and I wanted a place to hang out without having to eat, talk at normal decibel levels, and not someone's place of habitation. As we walked along Highland we found a really great place (for one reason only... but you have to read below) called Limerick Junction. As my friend and I strolled down Highland, we decided that we would make one pass of the bars and pubs and choose which one we liked best. As we finally picked one and waited for our turn in line for entrance by the bouncer, I realized something: I HAD LEFT MY ID IN THE BACK POCKET OF MY PREVIOUS PAIR OF PANTS!!! I searched my wallet, my purse, my pockets for anything that could prove my age. But I have nothing. For the only time in my life did I wish that I were a person who actually looked my age and not underage. Of course, the bouncer would not let us in as much as we had pleaded and tried to state a case. My friend and I keep walk away disappointed and me just plain stupefied by my absent-mindedness. We pass bar after bar when one bouncer says aloud to me, "Janelle?!!!" I respond, "Excuse me??" He says, "Janelle, right?? We went to high school together??" I retort, "No, but I can if you want me to be.. and if you can get us in there." The bouncer is initially reluctant, but playful about it. We joke around a bit more about me being Janelle. He agrees to let us in as long as my friend and I don't cause any raucus inside and I take on oscar-winning role of Janelle, Bouncer boy's homegirl from high school. Boy, were my friend and I lucky. Our night didn't have to end at home. I order a hard apple cider cuz really I don't think that I can fit any beer into my already swollen-with-food belly. The drinks are cheap and the live music is a treat. My friend and I sat the bar and received great attention and service from the bar staff. What a surprising end to the night!! read more

When you walk into Limerick, you feel as if you are a part of the place. My BF and I go there at least once a week and are greeted by the always excellent bar staff. Everything on their menu is delicious. I am quite fond of the sliders myself. Anyone who knows me is aware of my "slider" fetish. The plate is stacked horizontally with four small burgers charred to perfection with the signature leeks and cheese. The bun is toasted which gives it the best crunch when biting into the tiny bit of heaven. I absolutely love them and I think that LJ has the best ever. Their fries are excellent as well. They are cooked perfectly to just the right crispiness with the perfect amount of seasoning. We never had trouble getting a table when arriving around 7:30/8:00. And our glasses are never empty. The music is always great and Tuesdays they have open mic night if that is something that you'd be interested in participating in. Getting squeezed out of this overly packed but somehow carefree bar and into the least sketchy ally way in Atlanta is a weekly must when I drink my way through the highlands. I somehow have never managed to wiggle my way through this slightly more mature crowd to order a drink from the bar. This bar instead attracts the newlywed, pre-babies, loft living couples out with their neighbors for a rawdy night filling up on Guiness for the lads and Strongbow for the ladies. Even though I don't quite fit into this crowd, I find the 3 foot wide ally way lit by strands of lights hanging over my head a nice place to take a break from the over shot 80s rock blasting at 10 High down the street. It's also a fun and safe spot to check out and make fun of the people walking by - why the hell is that gorgeous guy with that fat ass with those horrible out of season swede boots?! read more

Went Bar Hopping in the area on a real dark and stormy night. On the 1 minute walk there I was pelted with rain from every angle. Finally got to the door and after the usual I.D. check ( I look young) The bouncer informed us of a $5 cover. Really?.... kind of a downer but whatever.... my shoes were moist.... It was pretty packed inside and it seemed like some people were celebrating birthdays. It's a lot smaller than I had previously thought. I was expecting something like Ormsby's. Thought there was some cavernous downstairs with more seating.... there wasn't.... Beer selection is meh... nothing to write about. They did however have this guy playing music there. He was a one man band. I think I at least saw the tambourine, harmonica, and guitar all at the same time. He was mostly playing cover songs and entertaining the birthday crowd. The service here is ok, I'll cut them a break since it was busy. I still don't get why there was a $5 cover though. It's not a club it's just a bar! read more

I got a chance to relive my college days this weekend, going to Music Midtown, a Tech game, and Limerick for some live music. We were lucky enough to get the back booth, giving us space to spread out. I got the free popcorn, which was excessively salty and slightly stale, while J got the drinks. They have dark and stormy's on the menu now, a welcome treat after having beer all day. Galen was playing, and he's our favorite now. He's a good mix of crowd-pleasing Irish classics (Wild Rover, Seven Drunken Nights, Devil is Dead), covers, and his own music. He called up a few friends to join in the performances. He was upset that he'd missed seeing Pearl Jam play, but when we told him that they hadn't played Daughter or Hunger Strike, he obliged. Nice touch. Limerick is a great neighborhood bar, particularly if you've got a seat. read more

I feel conflicted about how to write a review for Limerick. On the one hand, I've frequented it many times and have loved it, on the other my friend was in real danger. I went through a period where me and the crew loved to go here after a night of drinking. Or just come late and get smashed. The beer selection is good for college kids and cheapskates- lots of good, mid-range beers for cheap. Whichever special they have that night is usually fine. It's not great, but you don't go here for great drinks, you go to enjoy the faux Irish vibe they have going on, which implies rowdy drunkenness. On a good night, the vibe is great, cozy but not tame. There's usually one of the same two artists in there, singing and playing guitar. They play alternative acoustic hits and covers, and once everyone's ready to sing, Irish drinking songs. Great fun. I want to like Limerick but I can't because some guy tried to DATE RAPE MY FRIEND HERE. This isn't the bar's fault, but it is a reflection of their patronage. On that particular night there was a big group of us at a booth in the back. My friend got up to chat with folks at the bar and to bum a cigarette from someone. The same guy who offered her a cigarette also turned out to be a sleezey, rapey scumbag. He offered to buy her a drink, and as soon as the bartender placed it in front of him he did a bad job of hiding the fact that he was emptying a capsule full of white powder into it. She was not very intoxicated at all and called him on it, to which he replied, "You're really drunk right now." She didn't tell me this until after we'd all left the bar (she didn't want to 'ruin the mood'). I promptly freaked out and never went there again. I can already hear a potential response of, "Women can get date raped anywhere!! They just have to be aware and know how to keep themselves safe from predators!!" TRUE. BUT. Limerick comes off as a fun, neighborhood pub kind of place, and the fact that a date rapist felt comfortable enough to attempt to spike a drink in front of a crowded bar, and potentially drag an intoxicated woman out of there with him to do date-rapey things to her says a lot about what he thinks he can get away with in that environment. And if it had happened to a friend of yours, how would you feel about it? There are a lot of places in Atlanta where women can and should go where they can drink safely. I'm sorry that this isn't one of them. How to rate this? The times I did go I had awesome experiences, so I don't want to hurt Limerick's rating because of a one-off that was horrible. But I'm not going to excuse the establishment because of the "it could happen anywhere" mentality. That would be unsafe and is right up there with telling women they should prevent sexual assault by not wearing sexy clothes. So... 3 stars, but ladies, WATCH YOUR SHIT. read more

I concur with all the great reviews about this place. Stopped in around 10pm on a Thursday for a late night dinner and a beer. I ordered the Angus burger and they let me sub a small side salad for the fries. I am a bit leery of pub food (e.g. wilted lettuce, bitter tomato's, cheap bun, etc) but everything here was very fresh....and they use a gourmet style hamburger bun that was tasty. (Wheat bun available upon request.) The live music was awesome and I noticed they have beer specials every night of the week. $5.75 Warsteiner pitchers on Thursdays!!! On a final note, they have seats next to the plate glass windows which allows for some great VaHi people watching. This place is awesome. I can truly say that this is probably one of the more authentic Irish pubs around. I'ts not one of those bars that just tacks up a bunch of Irish flags, maps and other Irish paraphernalia and then claims to be Irish when they can't even pour a decent Guinness and don't even bother offering Irish music. Limerick Junction has it down and all other "Irish" pubs should take note....I'm looking at you RiRa. Anyway, enough with the ranting. This place is great as I mentioned before. They have a pretty decent beer selection (which you must be if you are in an Irish pub!!). They have free popcorn to much on while you are having some pints as well as pretty decent table service considering that they were slammed on a Saturday night. Their drinks were pretty good, and believe me I was celebrating my birthday so I was drinking quite heavily. Their shot selection was pretty good, I decided to go with a car bomb to go with the setting as well as another one....I can't really remember that one though. Their mixed drinks were pretty good, they didn't skimp on the booze.....this makes me a fan, lots of places tend to be real cheap in this department. The entertainment for that night was awesome.... I came for Irish music and Irish music was what I got. Galen Crader was playing and he was pretty good! He played all the songs that I would want to hear and played a song I requested (I made the mistake of mentioning it was my birthday, and be warned.... they will make you go up on stage and do hand motions to the unicorn song). One of the things that you have to keep in mind though, is that parking will be tricky so if you want to snag a seat come early and even earlier if you don't want to pay $10 for parking across the street. LJ is one of my favorite Virginia Highlands bars. Every time I come here, I have a great time. The bar area is on the small side and it can get a bit crowded at times, but still seems manageable to maneuver around. The staff is friendly and I have always experienced great service. Galen Crader is an excellent musician who gets the crowd swaying their beers, clapping hands, and singing when cued, to his songs. It's fun to go with a small group of friends and hangout for the evening talking, imbibing and listening to Celtic music. Limerick Junction defies the laws of physics. They somehow manage to fit tons of people into a small space without it feeling crowded... Limerick Junction has all the Irish pub decorations, drinks, and charm you would expect. Give the shepherd's pie a go, as well as the Irish strew (lamb and vegetable stew with soda bread on the side). There are plenty of hearty options on the menu to prolong your drinking experience. Came here to watch the World Cup game. I love this pub. That's right. PUB. The waitstaff is great. Attentive and knowledgeable. The food is actually fun and delicious. The corn beef and cabbage with farmer's cheese egg rolls are the noms. The house made honey mustard I had on my salad is perfection to me. I have been coming here while... bought time I said something. It is a smoking establishment, but, funny enough, I didn't smell like smoke when I left. With all the bars in the virginia highlands that don't charge cover I really didn't see what was so spectacular about this one that made it deserving of a 5$ cover on a rainy Friday night. The pros: cozy bar, intermittent live music. The cons: def takes a hot min to get the bartendar's attention, the cover charge, not enough tables. We finally did manage to snag a table and sit down, and despite the servers walking around no one came over to help. After waiting for a bit we ended up going up to the bar to order our second round. Settled in the heart of Virginia Highlands, Limerick Junction is a place that will immediately make you feel at home. As far as Irish pubs go, this is probably my favorite. You can belly up to the bar, sit at a window seat or gather with a group of friends at a table. All the while listening to some fun Irish music. This was where I very first ventured out to meet up with my fellow ATLbloggers, and I have to say, I really liked this place! Before I started hanging out with these cool people, I never really found myself in that many straight bars, and this one is definitely a kind of nice one, because of the Irish pub quality it has. I mean, the name is very Irish, so that is what I was expecting, but it was nice to go somewhere like that, hang out in a comfortable environment, and enjoy a Guinness. I also love dive bars, so since this has some of the charm of a dive bar, perhaps that is why I liked it so much. This place is also coincidentally, where I had my very first Irish Car Bomb; something to which I am now completely addicted. They are FANTASTIC here. I have heard mixed things about it being crowded and not so open and liberal, but I chalk that up to the fact it is located in the VA Highlands; even though I didn't experience that when I was there. Pleasantly surprised. Beyond their crack-laced popcorn (amazing), this is a place I've walked by a million times and has never really beckoned to me. It was cold as hell one night and none of the other choices nearby seemed to make sense so we went in - it was a quiet night so there was hardly anyone there. Limerick Junction is one of those places that makes you feel you belong when you walk in the door. In addition to pouring the perfect pint of Guinness, the staff is very attentive and interesting. Most of the staff are long-timers, which is exactly what you want in a place you call home. Favorite meals there include the angus hamburgers, chicken salads, soda bread, chicken switch, and veggie burger. For the most sinful desire, go for the cheese dip with potato wedges. Yum!!! Limerick has my heart! Great live music at just the right volume to be enjoyed rather than make your ears bleed. The crowd, the pints, full bar, the free popcorn; seriously what's there not to like...and the chicken fingers, oh the chicken fingers: perhaps the best in the world....and my critique has nothing to do with the double Bacardis i was readily downing at the time. Great food, but disappointing effort in the food. Positive Feedback: (1) Great service. (2) They're location provided other options for shopping and desserts. (3) They had Magner's which is great because I don't drink beer. (4) The mozzarella sticks were great (I just wish the cheese inside stayed melted a little longer than it did. Negative Feedback: (1) It smelt like an old vintage store with the smell of cigarettes. (2) They're Spud soup was suppose to be a creamy potato soup and it was undercooked hash browns in a cup of oil and melted garlic butter. (3) They're Shepard's Pie was just mashed potatoes on top of gravy and there were no chunks whatsoever, I think I MIGHT have found some peas.
