Shamed for Dining By Myself on Valentine's Day! I'm traveling by myself for work and unfortunately I can't spend vday with the boyfriend. No big deal, but thought I'd try out this place figuring pizza might not be top-of-mind for the holiday. The place was full but there wasn't a visible wait, so I asked the hostesses is there any issue with any issue with going to the bar and they told me that they don't monitor them so they don't know and that it's help yourself - which of course. So there's a true bar counter but then there's another bar counter next to the bar but overlooking where they make pizza, it wasn't clear that these were seats that needed to be waited on. There was only one barstool open (everything else was taken by couples) so I hopped on and after a few minutes of not being addressed I asked a passing waitress for the menu or if I should ask the bar. She asked me if I was sat by the hostess and I said no, explaining that it wasn't clear that these bar seats weren't self seating. The waitress said she had to check if it was ok if I sat there, and I explained that she could do that but it's the only seat available since everyone else is a couple. She got kind of snippy (I guess overwhelmed by their "busy-ness) and attempted to explain to me how I had to be sat by a waitress and couldn't seat myself and she has to make sure I can sit there (again, only single seat In the whole place). Honestly, I understand theres a process but the way it unfolded was rude and really called out my single situation by other couples sitting around me. I told her forget it it's fine and got up to leave and she said "ok fine". Take your own opinion but this is an example of straight inconsideration on a regularly busy Friday night. Nice place. The service is very good. You are greeted with glasses and a swing top bottle of water. Great touch. You don't have to constantly ask for refills. The beer menu is nice and they have a bar with good cocktails as well. The menu is good. My son had the meatball sandwich special. He loved it. They serve it with a side of marinara sauce. I had the 3 tacos that were on special. Also very delicious. Pork tacos with fresh veggies and fresh (not pickled) jalapeño slices. The menu includes sandwiches, 12" pizzas, salads, etc... It sounds basic. But, the ingredients are very good and they are their own takes on each of these items. If you are in the mood for pizza you can also build your own. They are all cooked in their firestone oven. I would certainly go back again and recommend it to anyone. My son loves it too. Family friendly place. read more

My family and I needed a little normalcy during quarantine after a couple of months, so we decided to order curbside from here a couple of weeks ago. First off the pizza was AMAZING! We ordered a pepperoni, the NOLA, and the LA. The overall pizza was high quality, from the crust to the toppings. Two reasons for the 3 star rating. First, it was pricey. My wife is GF, so we're used to having to pay a little more for GF crust, but Limestone charges a +$4 difference for a large, on top of the already pricey pie. From the friendliness of the staff to the cozy atmosphere, I loved my first trip to this pizzeria. Keeping things pretty basic, I wanted to try the signature Margherita pizza, I was certainly not disappointed. With a gluten-free crust option, I did not miss out on any flavor in this pie! The blend of cheese, sauce, and fresh spices was so savory! In typical pizza-pairing fashion, I was happy to try the LiMESTONE side salad, another signature dish, with fresh ingredients including radish wedges, fresh arugula, and a nice blend of bib lettuce with a sweet and tangy house-made dressing! Having lived in Napoli (Naples, Italy), being married to an Italian, not the "American" variety, and descended from Italian immigrants, I appreciate a well made wood oven Neapolitan (Napolitana) pizza. Many have tried to duplicate pizze Napolitane, but few have succeeded and I said to myself "speriamo" ("let's hope so") as I entered Limestone for the first time. I tell you up front that I am comparing, somewhat unfairly, Limestone to the pizzerias of Napoli because they claim to offer Neopolitan pizza, so I may seem harsh. However, my comments are meant to be constructive, offering Charlie (the very friendly owner who happened to be making pizzas next to me while we chatted about Italy) the opportunity to enhance his restaurant as they grow and flourish. I had heard rave reviews from fellow Yelp Elite Scott T and others during their short time in existence, so I had to give Limestone a go. Busy for a Thursday night, as a single I was able to be seated right away at the bar where I could watch the pizzas being made and placed in the ornate wood-fired oven. The space is modern, not my favorite as you probably know by now, with an abundance of stone, wood, glass, and steel, and bright, almost too bright for my sensitive eyes. The center attraction is the large stone-encased wood pizza oven blazing away while pizzas are being hand tossed and decorated for a quick dip inside. The staff all seemed sincerely friendly and helpful, although the tattoo clad bartender had a bit of an attitude, but not so much that it was off-putting, and service was fast and efficient. Offering an "arancini" ("little oranges") appetizer ("bites") special for just $2, the two Neopolitan style deep fried saffron infused rice balls complete with fresh mozzarella inside sat atop a small plate of tomato sauce. Aranicni di riso are a pizzeria antipasto staple in Naples along with crocchette di patate (potato croquettes) and other deep fried delights and the only way to start a night in a traditional pizzeria. Limestone's arancini were very well done, crunchy outside and moist inside, perfectly seasoned with saffron and other seasonings and a small ball of fresh mozzarella inside. I asked Charlie if they made their own mozzarella and much to my surprise he said "yes, about 600 pounds of curd per week". Now for the pizza ... dun-dun-dun. With only six offerings (seven if you include the special), there is not nearly the variety one would find in a pizzeria Napolitana. I ordered the sausage pizza, a simple and traditional choice and normally not something I would choose, only because it and the Margherita (fresh tomato and mozzarella with fresh basil leaves on top - named after Queen Margherita's favorite pizza), were the only two traditional Neopolitan pizza options available. I normally order pizza capricciosa (fresh tomatoes, ham, mushrooms, artichoke, fresh mozzarella cheese - fior di latte - and basil) or my all-time favorite, the friarielli e salsiccia (broccoli rabe and sausage), so I was a bit bummed that there was so little variety. Bacon and eggs on pizza? ... bacon and potatoes? ... Hollandaise sauce? ... Gruyere cheese ... NEVER IN NAPLES! The pizza was a bit small ($10 for a 12 incher), one to two inches in diameter less than pizza Napolitana (for comparison, a sausage pizza in Naples would cost around 6 Euros, a little over $8). The consistency of the dough was close, but it was a little thicker than the original, particularly around the edges. Neopolitan pizza is soft on top, a little crisp on the bottom, with a couple burnt spots and thin enough as to not overwhelm the semi-abundant toppings. The tomato sauce was a tad too spicy and excessively visible due to the lack of mozzarella and sausage atop my pizza. Italians do not overload a pizza with toppings as is customary here in the US, but there is normally enough fresh mozzarella cheese to nearly cover the baked pastry completely after it has melted. That was not the case here and twice as much cheese (and sausage) still would not have sufficed. Although not nearly as good as the worst pizza I have eaten in Naples, it was good and surely better than anything I have eaten in Lawrence thus far. If compared to an $8 Neopolitan pizza, my pizza (based on size and abundance of toppings) should have probably been priced at $6 max, so it was not a great value. But what do I know? Limestone has quickly become a popular spot on Mass Street and from the looks of it, doing extremely well ... BRAVO! In a town void of a decent Italian restaurant, people voted 715 "BEST FINE DINING IN LAWRENCE" in this year's Best Of Lawrence competition, Limestone is a welcome addition. I will return to see if they improve and to try other dishes (including hamburgers and pastrami sandwiches for some odd reason). Save yourself some frustration and some cash. There are much better places to get pizza in Lawrence. First off, you won't be able to get a real traditional pizza with the toppings you like, as they don't allow substitutions on most pizzas. Second, you will pay dearly for a small personal pizza that's got hardly no cheese and no toppings. Each personal pizza will run you from $14 to $16 or more. When I walked into LiMESTONE today at 11am and we were the only table in the place while other restaurants were on a 20-40min wait, I was concerned. Then when the waitress refused to do ala carte bacon & a biscuit for my 10yo. I was annoyed. When the chef refused to scramble and egg for her (they only do sunny side up or over easy), I offered to pay for our coffees and we left. I was visiting my son who attends KU and was told about like stone... I had the margherita and the "other"salad" they both were OUTSTANDING! I was so excited when this restaurant opened, and I can honestly say the food and atmosphere are fantastic. If it wasn't for the poor service I received, especially on my most recent visit, this review would easily be 5 stars. I was meeting a couple friends for dinner and drinks whom I hadn't seen in awhile. We waited for about 15 minutes to get a table (not bad at all since the space is small) and were given a table in the back. The food we received was fantastic, however, once we were finished eating the waitress was really trying to rush us to leave, stating that they needed the table for other guests. I don't know about you, but when your table just spent well over $120 on three people and still have beer in your glasses, the last thing I want is a waitress telling me she needs the table for someone else. This instantly made us uncomfortable. So, we left, only to find out when we arrived at the front of the restaurant that there was no wait at all and there were several open tables. This poor service left a sour taste in my mouth, and I haven't been back. Such a shame because the food and atmosphere really are great. read more

It's really quite inappropriate. The waiters walk around like they're in a pick-up joint, shaking their thang slowly as they walk down the aisle, and like they've got nothing better to do. Then, when they don't have much to do supposedly, some of them stand around talking to each other, and glaring at customers. It's like there's too much arrogance going on there, and not enough customer service. I suppose these things wouldn't be as noticeable at a more crowded time? But in the middle of the day it is, and it makes the place look bad. Their food this time was hit and miss again. Someone else at our table ordered the Margarita Pizza this time, against my warning, and said it tasted wrong also. And again, not every slice had cheese on it - what a rip! And yet, the potato pizza was good. All in all, no more trying for us or our friends. The people that run and work at a place, can either kill it or make it great, and this place isn't trying to make it great with it's customer skills for sure. Maybe they're going for the "soup nazi" affect? Be rude and apathetic to your customers, but see if they're keep coming back for the Farmer's Pizza? read more

Before I begin, I have to say that I have not actually tried their pizza. What I've seen looks pretty good, but I can't attest. Okay? Okay. I've been here three times: once with my husband for lunch, once with a friend and her husband for snacks (on the same day, even, around five pm), and once by myself for lunch. Each time, the food was fantastic. All three times, I've had the calamari, which comes with garlic aioli (not my thing) and a great fra diavolo (I ask for extra). These aren't simply rings of fried something. They're lightly battered and you actually get a few whole squid. Just enough to make me squirm in delight. The roasted root vegetables (beets, sweet potatoes, onions) with kale are delicious, too, and they kinda make you feel like you're at least being a leeeeetle healthy. The fries are well-made, thin and crispy, but I, and a few others I've spoken to, don't like their housemade ketchup. I also don't care for their chili sauce. I just dip them in my fra diavolo. If I'm going somewhere just for the fries, I go to Merchant's. The stilton with honey was good, but it's hard to mess up locally-made cheese. I haven't tried their in-house mozzarella. But the thing that will keep me coming in? The wings. Holy crap, they're good! I've only had them once because they're not always on the menu. Sad. They came with a large garnish of lightly pickled radishes and carrots and even that was amazing. Again, holy crap. For my health, it's a good thing I can't get these every day. The decor is really cute. I like the menu printed and attacked to clip board with rubber bands. I like Maggie, the pizza oven. I like the stuff on the walls. I even like the bathrooms. So, why did I subtract a star? The service. Man. It's awesome. As in, it's so bad, it leaves you feeling an overwhelming sense of awe. I had the same server the first two times I went in, and both times, I swear, the dude had to constantly remind himself that he was supposed to be working, because most of the time, he wasn't. I commented to my husband that he seemed to only have a job to prove to his parents that he could get one. The third time, after the hostess sat me (with direct sunlight in my face, no less, though, aside from a guy at the bar, there were no other customers), it took a good ten minutes for anyone to acknowledge me, though I counted four servers and every single one of them looked at me at various points. I only stayed just to see how long it would take for someone to approach me. I was discussing this with someone a few days ago and was told the servers all make a "living wage". They're not making $2.16 an hour, so they really don't care if you tip them, I suppose. Obviously, I'll go back for the food, but this place is not kid-friendly because of the service, so I don't know how often. They also don't take reservations, but if you ask, the server will give you the Wi-Fi password (I was working on my computer the day I went in alone). read more

Not very impressed with this spot. Went in expecting a nice dinner of wood fired pizza. The first problem was the atmosphere. The tables are huge and very wide, this coupled with a really noisy room makes for a shouting match with your dinner guests. Second is the food, the pizza might have been really off that day but I got a piece of burnt bread with a few dry vegetables on top. The crust turned to ash in my mouth it was so burned, And there might have been 5 pieces of sausage on my pizza. I know this style of pizza is not supposed to overload toppings but i would like at least one piece of everything on each slice. A unhappy experience. read more

Finally made it in to Limestone and we were not disappointed. All around great. We are already fans and are looking forward to our next visit. I remembered La Parrilla (the former restaurant at this location) as being dark and cramped. But Limestone is bright and open and inviting. And the staff was great. Our party ordered a few different pizzas and they were all delicious. The bar bites and snacks/sides menu has a great selection and offers some fun items to share. Love the wide variety of daily specials and seasonal items. The sandwiches, fries, and everything else we saw come out of the kitchen looked and smelled awesome. And the house-made sweet pepper sauce was amazing! Dip your pizza crust in it, dip your fries in it, just be sure to dip something in it!! We can't wait to go back and try something new. read more

Order the WHITE BEAN AND ALMOND DIP to start ofF and it was AMAZING must try!!! Order the BLT Pizza-our socks were blown away--who knew that would work LOL!!! The visit started kind of shaky when, after a 25 minute wait, we waited another 5 minutes to be greeted by our server. She TOTALLY made up for it, though. She was engaging, friendly and had great suggestions. The pizza's were so delicious. Fresh made mozzarella, an special house blend 'hotsauce' with garlic & spice blend that was just perfect! Everything is freshly made in house and you can completely tell, the chef's are artists in pizza & desserts. I was with a group of 4 and we dined at Limestone on a Saturday night. Our wait at 6 PM was roughly 20 minutes. The spaghetti squash salad was worth the $11, not only delicious , but if you've ever cut and cooked one, you realize it can be work. Salad was cold and delicious. We had the Sat pm pizza special, fig and arugula with prosciutto. The other pizza was sausage, apple and guyere cheese. Both were delicious. The 2nd one was more "pizza" looking, as the arugula look like a salad on top of your pizza. We folded our pieces and ate more like a sandwich. Doesn't bother me, as long as it tasted good, and it did! Service was excellent. We spent about $125 after 5 drinks, salad and 4 pizzas. I'm enjoying my leftovers for breakfast this am. This is such a cute little restaurant to go to! I love to sit by the windows so you can look outside to mass as you eat. The service is pretty good there and they have a good happy hour- if you can make it there by 5:30! They have pizzas for $6 and drink specials. I personally love the spud pizza- it has potatoes and bacon on it- enough said. We were in Lawrence today and went to Limestone for lunch. What an awesome dining experience! We sat at the bar while our table was being readied and were greeted by a very friendly bartender named Angelo. He was wonderful. He let us have a small taste of the wines on tap (yes they have wine on tap!). My mother-in-law ordered a screwdriver and we sat there and watched as he hand squeezed the oranges for the juice for the screwdriver. It was so fresh and delicious. We had the root vegetables, fried pickles, and calamari as our appetizers. They were all divine, however the calamari was the best I've ever had in my entire life! For lunch most of us got a pizza which had the freshest ingredients and their mozzarella is made fresh right there in the restaurant. The servers were friendly, quick, and very helpful despite the fact that the restaurant was very popular today at lunch. While exploring Lawrence for the first time, I came upon Limestone walking down Massachusetts. Naturally I went to Yelp to confirm that it was as good as it looked. Although their menu is a bit limited and pricey, the pizza was excellent. I ordered the coal fired pepperoni pizza. The crust was 10/10 and the hand cut pepperoni was a pleasant change from the typical circle-shapes pepperonis. However, the pizza didn't have enough cheese. Regardless, the service was a bit above average and the food was good. One pizza is enough for one person and you might even leave with a slice of two for later. Next time in Lawrence, I wouldn't hesitate to return but I won't be sprinting back either. read more
