This place has some dang good pizza. I think it's a little unconventional--they have some crazy specials ("biscuits and gravy"--wHAT) but they always make it taste good. I've gotten the margherita pizza and it's great. It tastes really fresh and authentic. I've gotten seated near the windows every time so far but I'd love to sit near the chefs and watch them do their thing. The pizzas are enough for one person to eat. They take up a large plate, so if you're with friends, consider getting two pizzas and/or some of their sides. The first time I ate there my pizza had a weird bitter zing in parts. I think it was the olive oil mixed with the blackened areas of the crust--my second and latest trip there didn't have that. There's nothing much that can be done about that, though--that's how the pizza's made! This place is a tiny bit more upscale that a lot of other downtown restaurants in my opinion, so I like to keep it for special occasions. I'd like to see more of them!! read more

I'm super excited to review one of my favorite Lawrence restaurants, and I'm going to do it through the eyes of a gluten-free yuppie. Ambiance: They staff is very friendly, accommodating, and generally seem to enjoy their jobs. I always like to see this in waiters. Modern decor, but comfortable; not sterile. It's well designed long dining room, clean bathrooms (always a good sign), and a variety of different ways in which to sit (booth, table, bar, pizza bar, outside). You can watch the bartenders and see them make the pizzas at the bar! Clientele is chatty and amicable. The pizza here is to die for. I've only had the gluten-free kind, and my fellow GF'ers know how hard it is to get good gluten-free crust. It's amazing. Thin crust made out of mostly buckwheat, I believe. Sometimes they run out, so if you're driving a ways, call ahead and see if they have GF crusts left - they've set one aside for me before! I always finish an entire pizza here because it is delicious and I'm awesome at eating. Try the spud and whatever they have for the special - it's usually local ingredients and great. Aside from the pizza, the entrees are great, too. I love the steak frites (perfectly cooked how you ask and excellent quality meat) and the warm beet salad. They have an excellent beer selection, and wine on tap(!!) What? The bartenders know what they're doing and will adjust cocktails for you if you like something a certain way (i.e. not too sweet). Glad that Lawrence finally has a place that serves authentic brick oven Neapolitan style pizza! The crust is awesome- slightly charred and chewy. Everything is fresh, high quality, and well-prepared. We don't go as often as we'd like because there really isn't much seating and they're always busy. They have lots of unique things on the menu and always have different seasonal specials that change frequently, which keeps it interesting. You can get different small appetizers/"bites" which I feel are well priced, I love that! My fiance is a vegetarian and isn't as adventurous as me, so a lot of times I can't really justify getting an appetizer or dessert just for me but at Limestone I can! Limestone was always our go to restaurant when we lived in Lawrence. This weekend we were in town and had to stop in! It was just as amazing as I remembered. At times they can have a bit of a wait but it is well worth it. It was a tough choice on what I should order since they added a few things to the menu since we had been last, but I had to go with my favorite pizza which is the spud. It comes topped with thinly sliced potatoes, onions, creme fraiche, bacon & rosemary. Limestone has a house made hot pepper sauce that I love on top of my pizza so that was a must add for me as well. The pizzas are cooked in a stone oven to perfection and made using only the freshest local ingredients. They display on the wall where they are sourcing their local ingredients also which I find very interesting. The Toulouse and apple was the new pizza that caught my attention so next time I go back I'll give that one a try! Other great options are the farmer, the margherita and the house fries are a great snack, I also use the hot pepper sauce on these. If you are looking for a drink no need to look elsewhere! They have a full bar and excellent craft cocktails, craft beer, and wine. read more

First time dining here and loved it. Busy Friday night but got seated at the bar. Great service, not too loud, vibrant atmosphere. Serious about their cocktails! Bartenders clearly know their craft. Started with calamari which was done perfectly with a light breading and two sauces. The pizza was also done perfectly with just the right amount of chew and crunch on the dough and the sauce was excellent. Definitely recommend this place! Love this place - I've visited Lawrence 3 times this year and each time I've visited I have eaten here and every time has provided a unique treat. I'm not a huge pizza fan but this place serves such unique pizzas with unique flavor and local fresh veggies - it's great! Today I had the daily special which was a pizza with asparagus, Gruyere, hollandaise, and a fried egg. It was amazing. The bartender makes amazing cocktails as well. Not to be missed! read more

Pretty darn tasty. If you like "fancy pizza" this is the place for you. You might get arugula on a pizza, or some figs. It sounds weird, but it works. I've never had a bad dish here, and I've had some that have been inspired! It can get busy. Locals know it's a great place. But go early, or on a weeknight. It's worth it. The desserts are also a force to be reckoned with. My only suggestion would be to add some kind of protein with the salads (chicken, prosciutto, beef?) and make it a meal. Not every salad there would be worth buying on its own because it might not "stick to your ribs." read more

Solid "neo-prairie" pizza with quality ingredients. They are almost always super busy so plan on waiting a while for a table (bar seating is first come first served) or get the pizza to go. The staff has always been friendly and the specials are great as well. My one comment is that they could improve on the consistency of the pizza coming out of the oven. Each time I've been in there has been a different person working the oven and the result is that sometimes the pizzas a undercooked or burnt. The one time the crust was burnt I sent it back with no problem and the same for an undercooked pizza. The bartenders really know what they are doing as well and do a fantastic job of pairing drink specials with their special pizza. read more

I was concerned that this place might get boring quickly as the menu is pretty small, but it remains a gem in downtown Lawrence! They do a great job with adding in fun specials daily and the regular menu is always executed spot on. Try the calamari when you go - they do it quite well. read more

Every time I go to Limestone, it is a fantastic experience. Friends from AZ insist on going here when they're in town because there is nothing like the Farmer pizza anywhere. It's a pizza that seems an odd concept: bacon, greens and gruyere with an egg in the middle - you tear off pieces and dip it in the yolk. It's AMAZING. The grilled cheese is the best I have found. Went to Limestone for lunch on 2/3. Two of us sat at the nearly empty bar. The bartender was absolutely terrible and most assuredly stoned out of his mind. He spent 5 minutes talking to his two bro's down the bar before acknowledging our presence. Then disappeared to find menus and spent a few more minutes chatting with the host. We finally were able to order a drink and had nearly finished it before he even inquired whether we wanted to eat. The food at Limestone is generally consistently good, but as others have noted this place has two serious flaws. 1) Slow, almost non-existent, apathetic service. 2) The prices have gone up at least twice since they opened and have gotten to the point of outrageous. $15 dollars for a 10" pepperoni pizza, with tax and tip, if they ever deserved one, would be over $20. Disappointed because I liked this place but save your money and frustration and go someplace that you will most assuredly have a better experience. read more

From friends, I have heard mixed reviews. Personally, I've never had a bad experience while eating here. To begin, the staff is attentive, but not to the point where it is bothersome. The atmosphere is relaxing and the setup of the restaurant is rather neat. I've always sat in a spot where I can look into the wood-fired oven. The pizzas are good and the prices reasonable. Personally, I feel that more flavor could be present, with the addition of herbs and spices, but that is my personal liking. It has competition in the area, as there are a couple other places in downtown that are predominately pizza. Limestone, however, is a little "classier", or upscale, compared to its competitors. 2.5 stars. I like the concept of Limestone (specialty pizzas and craft beers) and I think it's perfect for Mass street, which is the only reason I'm rounding up to 3 stars. I could see myself returning, if the occasion called for it. But the pizza - the star of the show - was kind of sad and lifeless. I had "the farmer" which was supposed to come with an egg on top. Imagine my dismay when my egg came out, shriveled and dry...why use an egg if you are just going to waste its lovely runny yolk?? But it wasn't only my sad sad egg. I love a good, real, minimalistic pizza, but there were some major issues here. The crust was burned in several places, the rest of the pizza was bland (bits of bacon and silvers of spinach on top of a burned crust do not count as flavor!), and I know others have said differently but I didn't actually think the dough was that flavorful - but hey, what do I know, mine was burned. The crust did, however, have a nice chewy/crunchy balance, courtesy of the pizza oven. Sometimes I think places like Limestone gain popularity because people think they're getting artisan food, when in fact it is just poorly executed food made with artisan ingredients. I'm open to the idea that I had an aberrant experience because I think Limestone has potential - however, I can only give Limestone 2.5 stars for now. read more

When I had to pick a restaurant for my myself, my fiancée, and my minister to get together for dinner and to discuss our ceremony arrangements, I immediately wanted to go to Limestone. I had been there more times than I care to admit, and I was excited to go there again. We sat in the corner table nearest to the window. The server was friendly and although the service was a bit slow, our food arrived hot and delicious. We ate and paid for our dinner, forgoing a desert in favor of wrapping up our wedding plans, although we did continue to order drinks until the server stopped coming up to our table. We were about 5 minutes from finishing and wrapping things up when an employee walked up to us and said "we have a waiting list right now so if you're finished with your meal I'd like for you to leave." I couldnt believe it! I had spent $70.00 in the hour that I had been there, and there were other open tables. I told the employee that we weren't leaving until our business was conducted, and other patrons could wait for our table the same way that we did. Then she said she'd like to sit a 6 top at our table and if we'd like she would clear off one of the dirty tables that had no one sitting there so that we could finish our business/drinks. I said that was acceptable, and she proceeded to give me the dirtiest look imaginable. At the same time, one of the members of the 6 top came up to me, an older gentleman who was obviously inebriated - drink in hand -walked up and said to us "Is this a library?" mind you, we were conducting BUSINESS, while eating AND drinking at our table. Then proceeded to get into an argument with me after I told him to leave us alone. His daughter, mortified, was embarassed of his behavior, apologized and left the restaurant. I told the employee who asked us to leave to get him away from us and our table, and she retorted "I don't control the actions of our guests." I asked to speak to a manager at this time, and she said I'm an assistant manager but the owner of Limestone is here, and you can speak with him. Me, my fiancée and our minister all explained what happened to him, and he said (and im closely paraphrasing) "since you guys are done eating you have to leave, even if you're ordering drinks, because I have to pay my mortgage." Are you kidding me!? The owner should be ashamed of himself. I have been going to limestone since the day after they opened, overlooking the oftentimes poor service on many an occasion, but this is/was too much. The minister that we were meeting with said she had never seen a restaurant staff be more rude to a patron. I know one thing that's for sure: I will NEVER eat at Limestone again, and unless you enjoy poor service, long wait times, rude staff members, and an uncaring and rude business owner, I would advise you to avoid this place like the plague! There are local pizza restaurants in downtown Lawrence where not only will you enjoy phenomenal food at a cheaper price, but the staff and owners actually are kind, attentive and appreciate your business (Like Rudys, Papa Kenos, etc). The food at Limestone is good, but you can get better customer service at Wal-Mart at 2:00 am. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!!! SHAME ON YOU LIMESTONE!!!! I would have demanded a refund, but with the way that you treat your customers, I think you're gonna need every dollar you can get. What the #@#* do I have to do to get good pizza in Kansas? Limestone is painful for me; because they are THISCLOSE to making genuinely wonderful pizza. I had actually kind of made peace with the Italian food/but esp pizza situation here but then I saw a pic of someone's Neapolitan style Margherita from Limestone's, and I thought, oh my GOD, it's finally happened, good pizza has come to Lawrence! What they did well (really, really well): the crust is bubbly and almost as soft and chewy as my Holy Grail Neapolitan pizza, so they could very well be using the correct 0 or 00 flour and letting it ferment long enough, the brick oven is hot enough to make the lovely little burnt spots, the mozzarella is very good, not sure if it's bufala Campana; truly excellent cheese regardless, and they put olive oil on the pizza right before they serve it. The wet topping/dry crust ratio was pretty much perfect. Even though they don't use fresh basil leaves, the paste substitute tasted fine. Spice pastes are clever cooking hacks; I use them myself sometimes. I prefer fresh leaves, but the basil component was still quite good. The service was terrific, and the hibiscus and lemon gelato tasted divine (even though they were not very dense, more custardy than gelato-y....a non-issue though because they were so yummy). So. The person who put together the template for their Margherita pizza knows what they're doing, which is why I want to know: wtf would they add so much chili/red pepper to the sauce? I have never in a lifetime's pursuit of the ultimate Neapolitan Margherita, tasted sauce like this stuff. It ruined everything. If you are using quality San Marzano tomatoes (which have a perfect blend of tart and sweet), you don't need very many spices at all to support and highlight the tomato flavor, and you certainly don't need overwhelming peppery notes. If the chef feels this strongly about pepper, they should offer it as a second option, or offer freshly ground red pepper at the tables. To eat a pizza that was so close to perfect, only to be ruined by unbalanced sauce....was painful. Eating this pizza was like reading all of the Harry Potter books and then having someone ruin the ending I understand the other pizza offerings here; they are perfectly orchestrated for the location, but why can't they serve up one proper pizza? Please, please, somebody make this for me! I've tried making my own, and without a brick oven it just doesn't work. I can't afford to get back to the East coast and I am in a bad way without good pizza. The people of Kansas are good people; they deserve equally good Margherita pizza. And someone at Limestone obviously knows how to make it, so I'd surely appreciate it if they'd do so. read more

My family and I have tried twice now to eat here and it seems harder an harder to get in. The first time it was a Sunday and they were closed. I can sort of understand being closed on this day for other locations in town but not for one with that location and with that many people walking up to their door on a Sunday. The second time we went in and put our name in and they told us 45 minutes for a wait. We were perfectly fine with the wait as it was 7 pm on a Saturday so we stood towards the front. The problem is this place has nowhere for anyone to wait. So after a few minutes of standing by the host stand we were told to move because they had a party of 6 coming in and I guess we were in the way. We said okay and moved behind the host stand to try and make room. A few minutes later, a waitress walked by and told us that we were in the way of them going and getting drinks. This was the point when we told them to take our names off the list and that we were going elsewhere. They did not seem to care and just said okay and we walked out feeling as though we were pushed out of there. This place may have really good food and probably is worth the wait but not when they do not make you feel very welcome. It may be a better place to try on an off night when they are not so busy. We may try this place in the future but we will certainly not go out of our way to try it. read more

5 Stars for the food & drink 2 Stars for service There is no doubt these people know what they are doing in the kitchen. That is apparent through the reviews that rave about it. Hands down delicious! The downfall is the wait & service. I understand that when opening a small business you start small, but I have never not had a wait at Limestone. Granite...I've only gone in the evening. With that wait there really isn't a place for you to wait without feeling in the way. The greeter will let you just stand in front of the front door until your table is ready. My group relocated to the bar on our own & was told there was more standing space in the back hall of the restaurant. We ordered drinks at the bar after previewing the oscillating menu on the tv. I chose the coffee stout & it was a fantastic choice! It made me very happy during our 20min wait. After being seated we were waited on and the waitress had wonderful knowledge of the menu & presented the specials to us by memory & it was very impressive. Food came in a timely fashion, waitress checked on us occasionally & all was great until our check came. My party consisted of 6 women around the age of 30 and we were handed one check.... we didn't all split a large pizza where we could ask to have the check divided between our credit cards. Some of us ordered drinks or salads & dinner etc. etc. Anyways...after trying to get her attention many times, our waitress returned to our table and agreed to split the check. After doing so, myself & a friend noticed that we were overcharged for our beers. The tv screen menu said that the beers were $4 and we were charged $5 (I know...$1 big deal..). But it's the principle. My friend asked if that could be changed on our bills since the menu we read clearly says $4. We were then told that the menus that had been on our table said that the beers were $5. Well we ordered at the bar where it says Specials and $4. The waitress leaves and then another lady (who didn't specify her roll as a manager) appears to let us know that the beer has always been $5.... We again inform this lady of the TV Menu and she said it must be a typo (a typo that appears in two different places on that screen mind you). Then she left. We all looked at each other a little confused and then realized that was her way of letting us know we were wrong and that we would not be getting our bills corrected. I realize $1 might sound petty, but it's the principle... As someone in customer service that's when you apologizes for the confusion and maybe thank the customer dining with them & maybe even for informing them of the misleading menus. Side Note- I am not someone who believes that "the customer is always right". I just think this was handled very poorly by the wait staff. read more

The hostess was incredibly snobby and rude, we had a group of 5 and that apparently ruined her whole night. Finally! After having my partner talk and talk about how we should try Limestone we finally went on a weekend. We ordered the special which was fried chicken, slaw, and mashed potatoes. Everything on the plate was delicious but I was not impressed with the pizza Margherita. It just wasn't flavorful like other Margherita pizzas I've tasted in the past. It definitely need more seasoning. It was sad that they're known for their pizza but that's the part I wasn't too thrilled about. Truly amazing pizza. I'm from Omaha where a similar restaurant called Dante (2019 Independent Pizzeria of the Year by Pizza Today) is all the rave but this place might be better. We had the Moroccan and one of the weekend specials which was the Brussels Sprouts Pizza. Both were absolute perfection and 100% worth the price. Service was okay, I'm not picky about service but I think the waiter should at least come by once and ask how everything is going, but that's not important as the food spoke for itself. That waiter knew damn well we were enjoying it and I respect that. Fabulous drink menu as well. 100% will be back very soon I'm curious to see how the specials menu changes. If you're getting pizza in Lawrence and want a fancier experience this is the only place to go. Still thinking about that Brussels Sprout pizza even though my stomach hated me this morning read more
