Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu is an academy that focuses on M.A. based on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This place…read morewelcomes everyone, both children and adults, from those who have no experience to those who do, to an environment that is safe and is all-encouraging. I also love that they customize and tailor your lessons so it's you-centric! Looking at their schedule, I like that their hours cater and can work for those who have school/work. Reaching out to Mr. Emil to obtain more information, I loved that he was extremely responsive, very friendly, and was readily available for any assistance! I can see why this place receives such high and positive feedback from their happy clients! +ask for Mr. Emil! +jiu-jitsu! +friendly staff +safe environment

Took my 5- and 8-year-old to Six Blades Jiu Jitsu Nova for a free trial. The environment is…read moreno-nonsense and clearly built around serious training-- which as an Army veteran is something I personally respect and felt at home in, especially given the military-style banter. That said, I didn't find the tone ideal for younger kids. There was language and phrasing ("kick his ass!") that I didn't feel was appropriate for children, and I was disappointed by comments made toward boys being beaten by girls ("You'll walk home if you lose to a girl")--not exactly the message I want either of my kids internalizing. The instructors are absolutely skilled and committed, but they treat the kids like mini adults, which may work for some families, but not ours. We ended up going with another gym that's more youth-focused, closer to home, and offers more affordable memberships with military and family discounts. I think Six Blades would be great for adult students or older teens looking for high-level instruction, but it just wasn't the right fit for our young kids. Edited for further context: For further context, what the owner describes as "jovial" banter included quotes from coaches during the kids' training session: * "Kick his ass!" * "Whoop his ass!" * "You better not lose to a girl!" * "If you lose to a girl, you're walking home!" * "Pay attention, dammit!" "Banter" implies the kids could respond with witty comebacks--but what would they realistically say to grown men in a position of authority? They simply complied. That said, I truly appreciate the owner's openness to constructive feedback. It makes me feel more confident in my decision as a parent. For now, we'll stick with the more "budget" and kid-friendly option -- at least until my children are old enough to clap back at demeaning and misogynistic comments with confidence and humor that comes with maturity.

I've trained combative martial arts and sporadic trial BJJs in the local area and across the…read morecountry. Max and Heather at Shoreline offer, by far, the best instruction and environment I've encountered. The other belted students are also great teachers whether it's a class, open mat or regular roll. I joined Shoreline because they offered what I need that most gyms don't have; a purple belt female instructor with Muay Thai/competitive background, a black belt Gracie Barra bred instructor, an emphasis on mobility and understanding of deep fundamentals, and month-to-month contracts. What I didn't realize I'd also be getting was nearly private instruction, a view of Brazilian culture and traditional BJJ history, and a home/family feel at a gym that I've never had in the other many gyms I've been a part of (I move every year). If the gym size turns you away, your first step in becoming a better fighter is adjusting your priorities. There is plenty of space for great rolls and drills, you have the undivided attention of an instructor to clean up any slop in your movement, and you don't have a loud kickboxing class in the background competing for your ears. Your development is individualized on an actual program of building blocks, not a "let's learn a random sweep today" mentality. The cues and details in their brain are insanely helpful, and I've had massive breakthroughs in my jiu jitsu and overall athleticism. Bad habits I was always allowed to make that would've gotten me submitted or injured are getting drilled out of me and I'm gaining a LOT of advantage with subtle adjustments. Ladies, this is your sign to join. Heather offers insights from a really formidable background, and it's important to have the perspective in reference to a female physiology. You CAN toss around men who are stronger and heavier; she does it all the time! You'll learn momentum, mobility, speed and balance caveats that level the field. I started solely for self defense training. They're happy to teach to those parameters, but also are active in competing and refereeing, and I now am addicted to rolling and seeking comps. Your path will be respected. Finally, they're also just so much fun! Training can be frustrating when you're eager, but I've never left a class without a massive smile on my face.

It had been years since I started any kind of physical activity and to be honest it terrified me to start again. I decided to bite the bullet and start training again. You can train at your own pace and everyone wants to see you succeed The trainers are very hands on and make sure that everyone understands the techniques being taught. They make training fun and are incredibly knowledgeable in their craft. The hour flies by. The facility is also great. A huge facility with plenty of mat space and they keep it clean. I have trained before in different facilities and this location is one of the best. Last but not least, the schedule of classes is great. I work very long hours and having classes in the evening makes it where I could train every day. The schedule is very accommodating. Coach James is pretty laid back but he's serious when he comes to instructing me and my teammates. I've really fallen in love with the sport and a great reason as to why is because of the continuous support from everyone in the gym including coach. We'll have family fight nights and watch the fights together and teammates bring their children along. We also do carpool arrangements to help get each other to different matches, to support the different teammates that are fighting. Coach James is a fair and reasonable guy. Very approachable. It was so important to me that I even chose my house to be close to this gym. When I got here it did not disappoint. Almost immediately I met kru Jom who has since taken my Muay Thai to the best level. To be completely honest, I move with a lot of Ego. I thought I had to be fast , strong, and impressive in order to be "good at martial arts" and kru Jom called me out immediately. "Sahira, I need you move more. Too tense" and "Sahira, I need you play more". In the 5 month I've been working with Kru Jom I've become more playful and relaxed in my motion, which is also translating into my regular life. Anger issues have noticeable decreased and I find myself applying Kru Jom's life philosophy into my healing practice as well (I'm a chiropractor). Kru Jom is my guy, and the entire gym holds excellent standards and requires high levels of discipline from me, which is the environment I thrive best in. "Train. Win. Repeat." is our motto, and it holds true both in the gym and outside of the gym. If you want friends to sweat with, play with, and get better with, this is the place for you.
