I love this place. I moved here from Denver for a job and the first thing I did was look for a Muay Thai gym recommendation, and this was the gym that was recommended. It was so important to me that I even chose my house to be close to this gym. When I got here it did not disappoint. Almost immediately I met kru Jom who has since taken my Muay Thai to the best level. To be completely honest, I move with a lot of Ego. I thought I had to be fast , strong, and impressive in order to be "good at martial arts" and kru Jom called me out immediately. "Sahira, I need you move more. Too tense" and "Sahira, I need you play more". In the 5 month I've been working with Kru Jom I've become more playful and relaxed in my motion, which is also translating into my regular life. Anger issues have noticeable decreased and I find myself applying Kru Jom's life philosophy into my healing practice as well (I'm a chiropractor). Kru Jom is my guy, and the entire gym holds excellent standards and requires high levels of discipline from me, which is the environment I thrive best in. "Train. Win. Repeat." is our motto, and it holds true both in the gym and outside of the gym. If you want friends to sweat with, play with, and get better with, this is the place for you. Training here has been such an unbelievable experience , this gym is great for anyone from a day one beginner up to a professional fighter. The Muay Thai coaching is some of the best I've experienced in many years between instructors who have fought at the highest levels , won national titles and local champions etc .. facilities and equipment are clean and plentiful. They do not have an inviting culture. Their mindset is profit over pedagogy. They charge you for everything. They don't teach you good form and the classes are mediocre. I was interested in the program for my teen son and filled out the online contact form since. I could not find out about fees/pricing since all they mentioned is the $49/week intro special for 1 week which they really pushed. I also wanted to know the makeup of the program. It says teen but I heard that it was mixed of both teen and little kids. I got 3 emails, 1 text, 1 live call w/in a 12 hr period but Vivek and team kept pushing and selling instead of answering my questions. Unsub from their email and text and MORE calls on different phone number. Like someone else on Yelp stated that they value profit first. Responding to Vivek's comment: Yes I did write back asking very specific questions after your very first email to me. And yes, it was from Sat to Sun. You contacted me 5 times in 12 period w/o once answering my two questions. I would be happy to wait to Monday/Tuesday to get some answers and was not expecting anything on the weekend but your team called me at 6am PDT (I am on the west coast although you didnt know that) and pretty much said the same thing ($49/week). If you took the time to call, at least personalize it or address my question. RESPONDING to 2nd comment: I gave a 1 star not because of the poor marketing alone (5 contacts in 12 hrs on weekend w/o once giving the information i asked) but for your practice of pressuring parents into paying for $49 BEFORE they even knew what the price and terms were. I was hesitant since I read that there was a ONE YEAR CONTRACT and that the rate was high but I wanted to find out for myself. All of your communications didn't specify the ONE YEAR CONTRACT nor the regular price. If you had been somewhat upfront about it, I would not have felt the need to alert other parents (via this review) about your practice. and finally, we have tried out a few other programs in the area. This review is for the summer camp. We had enrolled our son here multiple weeks of summer camp (which we've done for 3 years now). It was a lot more expensive than our other camp but we had previously had good experiences. This year he got sick his first week there (and in turn got our entire family sick) which caused him to miss the second week. We understand that getting sick happens but when we called to let them know and see if we could move to another week/get future credit they told us no worries, just contact Grace to arrange that because they're waitlisted. Well apparently Grace told the person I spoke with yesterday that there are no credits or refunds. Our son was basically healthy enough to send midway through the week but to be responsible, we decided to hold him back so that what happened to us, didn't happen to anyone else. Grace was supposed to call me back and has not. This policy is exactly why the parents sent their sick child. Our other camp allows us to move weeks or keep credit for future years because they don't want their kids all getting sick. Any other parents looking to send their kids to summer camp here should be aware of this policy as our whole family was sick for 2 weeks due to this. Avoid, we won't be back next year and no longer want a credit. read more

We have loved our experience at Pentagon MMA so much, and this review is several aspects of our experience. My kids spent several years here including a year of Digital School (pandemic times) for my oldest which then rolled into Summer Camps followed by classes. I have stood outside the door and watched my kids anywhere between 2-4/a week between both kids classes and have completed their Situational Awareness course. Summer Camp - My kids loved the weeks of summer camp at Pentagon MMA. The weeks are action packed and the kids stay active. There are trips, many activities and learning experiences. The kids went to Mount Vernon, they did obstacles, crafts, brought home science experiments. We have done a lot of county camps, sports camps, etc and I can say that this is a well run kids camp. The instructors run the camps so the kids receive the same messages of respect and discipline. MMA classes for little kids/older kids - the lessons my kids have learned in these classes including those of respect and integrity and the encouragement to work hard and persevere are priceless. I highly recommend them and if you have been thinking about it, you should give it a try. I believe there may be trial classes. Otherwise contract lengths are anywhere from 6 months to 1 year, which may sound long, but for any child to hear these positive messages from a respected adult and physically and mentally work hard 2-3 times a week was well worth it. (Moms and Dads have their own opportunity to experience the training during Mother's and Father's Days, and it's definitely a work out and helps you understand how much strength and endurance the kids have and develop). Situational Awareness Seminar - I attended a several hour long course on Sundays for a month for adults. It was life changing, very empowering, and educational. The course teaches you about self defense, the intricacies of self defense in today's world and how to change your mindset to survive. I highly recommend this course. The last thing I have to say about PMMA is that the instructors, the staff, and all the other members are amazing. They become like family. I highly recommend Pentagon MMA for all the above. Pentagon MMA is the place to go if you want to take interesting classes from world-renowned experts in Muay Thai (also known as Kickboxing or Thai Boxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and mixed martial arts, and GET IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE! Their website claims that "fitness goes to a new level with full-body workouts that build muscle and improve flexibility." They're spot on and maybe even a bit humble. A 45 minute workout here is a kick butt session that will leave even the most in-shape athlete drenched at the end of the session. Review for Muay Thai. I've been going for over a year now and I can't praise them enough. A very welcoming staff and trainers who want you to be your best self. They push you to challenge yourself without being overbearing and understand everyone has different goals. If you want to train hard to destroy in the ring or just want to improve your fitness, the focus is on improvement and not being the "best". The coaches all have different styles and allows you to really learn from different vantage points all in a fun environment. It is still very difficult(!) but the point at the end of the day is to have fun while pushing yourself. We LOVE PMMA! They are consistent in their demeanors, encouraging to the kids, firm, and focused. My two boys have been attending regularly for a year or so and they look forward to it almost always. The staff is always kind and friendly, so their best to work with you and go the extra mile. It is a tad pricey but for us this is really an investment that is worth every penny to me. Also, the summer camps are excellent. The cost is on par with other camps in the area but I feel like you get more out of it here. They will do a field trip 4/5 days per week with crafts, games, water play, and some martial arts instruction. I highly recommend them. read more

I started learning Muay Thai at PMMA a little over a year ago and have had nothing but pleasant experiences. After checking out some other boxing and mma gyms in the area, Pentagon stood out for a few reasons. First of all, the instructors and staff members remembered me after my first trial class. This seems like a small thing, but it impressed me how personable they were even though they had so many students and I wasn't a member of the gym. Also, no one pressured me into joining. Other gyms pushed a membership on me like used car salesmen. Pentagon let my experience speak for itself. Finally, the gym has an extremely inclusive environment. There aren't big egos or Alphas walking around. No matter your fitness level, the other students will help you and the instructors will push you HARD, but in a caring and friendly way. Full disclosure: I am an active fighter on the Pentagon MMA fight team. I jokingly call Pentagon MMA (PMMA) the "Apple Store" of MMA gyms. PMMA is neatly tucked just off of Columbia pike. As soon as you walk toward the business (which has a distinct black and orange motif) you will instantly notice that everything is simple and clean. Please note, the entire gym is a shoe free zone (save for the rest rooms). I first met Vivek (the proprietor of PMMA) maybe 7 or so years ago. Vivek and I learned the art of Muay Thai under a gentleman by the name of Aud. In all that time, I've known Vivek to be a hard working and firm, but fair individual. This matters because when I learned he was finally opening his own gym, I knew it would be something special. Upon walking into PMMA, you will see the main mat room. Here, large classes are often working (both in Muay Thai and BJJ). Ahead of you, you will see where the main desk is situated. There is a small pro shop (with some nice merchandise), a sitting area, a fridge full of beverages for sale, and someone on staff will be waiting to greet you. To the right from the main mat room, you will see free weights, pull up bars, a squat rack and massive heavy bags. All of the equipment is clean and of good quality. Just beyond the main desk sits a second mat room. Often, the grappling occurs back here. I have trained seriously in Martial Arts for over a decade. I've trained with a good deal of teams across various gyms. I've been a student, a coach, a fighter, etc. I have experienced many different gym cultures. I genuinely appreciate the culture Vivek has cultivated. Many gyms are adamant about competition, to the point where students feel forced to fight. At PMMA, the process to competition isn't as simple as saying "I want a fight". No student is allowed to compete before they display sound fundamentals. Working hard and having fun are key and safety is paramount. In terms of knowledge and ability (as well as accomplishments), the Coaches are as good as any in the area. Vivek is a Professional Thai Boxer with a deep amateur background. He's competed as recently as the tail end of 2017 and had fights in Thailand. Overseeing the Muay Thai program in Vivek's stead, you have Master Chon. Master Chon cut his teeth as a professional fighter in Thailand. He's tiny, humble and legit as it gets. He was a collaborator on the book "Muay Thai Unleashed" (he also was one of the models in the book). He's taught Muay Thai all over the world. The head of the grappling program, Sugi, is a gentle man that is an absolute animal on the mats. Sugi is a judo Olympian and a very legit BJJ black belt. His ferocity in the mats stand in stark contrast to his gentle demeanor (as seems to be the case with all the coaches). Students range from highly experienced to learning their first technique that day. Ages range from small children to those more advanced in years. The BJJ team is constantly hitting competitions and the fight team competes regularly. Regardless of your experience level, there's something here for you. I had a choice of where I wanted to be, for more reasons that I could list, Pentagon was the perfect place for me. Myself and my family are thankful that Pentagon exists. My experiences are my own, but I assure you, you won't find a team more dedicated to ensuring that their students grow both as people and as martial artists. Come check out the gym. PMMA at large is the most community facing organization I've ever seen. However, unlike most community focused businesses, there is an unwavering focus on excellence. This review in specific is for the youth program. I cannot explain how much this has helped my four year old daughter. Your head would explode if you heard her shouting "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" around the house for chores. She has taken to the discipline very well and it's helped in her academics and in her social life, not to mention that she is learning to defend herself with some solid foundations. When our 4 year old was going through a rough patch with not listening we decided to enroll him in a martial arts program hoping it would help with structure and listening to adults. The transformation our son went through in just a few months has been remarkable. The Little Warriors program offers a mix of physical skills training (pushups, bear crawls, grappling, etc.) and self discipline. It is great for keeping kids active, but also makes them think things like focus and how they speak to others. Well this is my gym so that must say something. I commute 30 minutes through D.C. each way to the gym which I frequent 3-4x a week. This is one of the cleanest well run gyms I've ever been to. For regular students your instructors are world class. The instructor Kru Chon is straight out of Thailand and has had around 120 pro fights and was a 2x world champion in Muay Thai. He is a bad ass. He's also one of the most kind and patient instructors you will ever meet. The classes are on a very open Matt, perfect for sparring and mitt work. You aren't going to be attending a cardio kick boxing class or dancing more than your fighting. Your going to be learning basics of Muay Thai and holding mitts for each other. You learn techniques, build endurance and eventually combinations. If fitness is your goal you will acquire that, if learning to fight is your goal your also in the right place. Not many places provide both. Now for those of you interested in fighting.... We have one of the best fight teams in the DMV with many amateur fighters and a pro. We also host open matts and invite fighters from around the area to help bolster our own fighters experience. This is the best gym for kick boxers to come gain experience and compete. Every day there was a different activity with everything from going on a pirate ship, the zoo, and the pool. Fast forward a few months and all I can say is my son absolutely LOVED it. I remember picking him up one day a little early and he told me that he was mad at me for picking him early and wanted me to come back later. Now that takes me to the summer of 2021. Just like most I had put on the quarantine 15(+ a few more) and after a doctor's visit where I was told to make my health more seriously. I had just started going back to gym but I needed find a way to introduce cardio into my normal gym routine. I hate running and the cardio machines at the gym are just... boring. So I decided to give Muay Thai and Pentagon MMA a try. I was a bit nervous leading up to my first class and wasn't real sure on what to expect. Right from the moment I walked in the door, the team at Pentagon MMA do an amazing job welcoming you and calming any nerves you may have. The first class may have been the best workout I have ever had in my life and checking my apple watch after each class, I am routinely burning 900-1000 calories. I attended Pentagon MMA for about four months. It was my first time doing kickboxing and I really enjoyed it. Here are a few takeaways: Instructors and staff: Very nice and knowledgeable. Even with a full class, I felt like they were paying attention, checking form and providing tips to improve. The front desk staff was always pleasant and greeted me with a smile. Classes: The classes were fun. You definitely get a good workout. They can get crowded sometimes, but it really depends on the time of the day. People from all ages, shapes and skill level attend so I never felt like an outsider. Membership/Management: This is really the only area where I think Pentagon MMA could improve on (thus why I didn't give them five stars). Their membership options are limited. I was sold on a 6 month membership with the option to stop at any point after the first two months. The fine print was that I needed to provide a notification months in advance, if not there would be cancellation penalties. I understand that as a business they need to have policies in place but even when I emailed management directly to explain my unfortunately and unplanned situation they were not all that understanding. It was disappointing because they attempt to build a sense of community, but I definitely did not feel supported. Summary: I recommend Pentagon MMA, however, make sure you read the agreement carefully before joining. Don't feel rush by their promotional offers when you try their free class. read more

I've tried other places and felt intimidated, or that I wasn't really learning enough or getting enough help on improving my form. At Pentagon I feel so much more comfortable, and the instructors do a great job giving individualized attention to everyone in the class. The classes are always fun, and always a great workout! We've transitioned to virtual classes during COVID-19 and the classes are equally as challenging and are a solid workout. The instructors still give tips to correct your individual form during the virtual classes (thanks to the Zoom video platform!), which I think is fantastic and super helpful. read more

Everyone on staff is extremely welcoming and encourage the students to be welcoming as well; PMMA is truly a community. Classes are always fun and engaging and keep you motivated to train harder. The coaches and masters work hard to make the classes effective for all levels, so you don't need to have years of experience to start taking classes (but if you do have years of experience they find ways to make your class more engaging). This place is terrible. Sent my young child here and he was traumatized by the treatment. Not a good place for kids.
