A few of us had been wanting to try Linear since spotting it this summer and now I'm disappointed we didn't go earlier. We went to dinner on a Friday evening with a reservation for 5:30 pm and had no problem getting a table. There were a few others in the restaurant when we walked in but it filled up quickly once we were seated and had a beverage. The service was perfect, friendly but not overly so that you wish they would just let you eat or feel pushed to clear their table. Her timing on delivery of drinks, checking in with us and the arrival of the food was perfect. Our plates disappeared once empty with us barely noticing which to me shows an etiquette you don't see often in the American food service industry. She was able to answer all questions about the menu and give recommendations when it was hard to choose between both the food items and the drinks. I choose one of the specials, the pumpkin bolognese and it was a bowl of goodness I couldn't stop eating until it hurt. Another got the wagyu flank steak (our servers favorite) and it was probably the best cooked steak I've ever seen and she couldn't stop raving about it. The vegetarian of the group opted for the vegan farro risotto and said the grain-ola added an unexpected and wonderful crunch to the dish. Unfortunately we were too stuffed from our meals to try the deserts but I will definitely be back. In fact it was hard not to go back the very next day. Its nice to finally have a place to eat that feels light and fresh not dark and over industrial. The abundance of windows and plants make this feel more like going to tea in the garden. Well I'm sure I'll be there many time before then I can't wait to pop in once the weather is nice again for drinks outside along the river. read more

Decided to give Linear a try for my birthday dinner. Happy hour specials are amazing. House wine for $4?!? Yes please! Entrees were delicious and good portion size. Beautiful view overlooking the Grand River. Interior is simplistic and modern. Only complaints would be the smaller menu, would be nice to have a little more options. Also, the Caesar salad didn't have the butt ends cut off, meaning they wouldn't of been able to properly clean the romaine. Slight issue, but the dressing was delicious. My wife and I were very excited to try Linear for GR restaurant week. Unfortunately, we were both fairly disappointed with our meals. We did the 5 course meal and the portions were way too small. We ordered the wagyu steak and the salmon - both were cold. The beet gnocchi was actually really good, but again, the portion was too small to enjoy... we were excited for dessert, but even the chocolate mousse was bad - it was salty and tangy - neither of us finished it. We've been to many other restaurants in GR for restaurant week and the portions are much better elsewhere. It was not worth the $35/person. read more

I think this is one of the most well rounded restaurants I have been to. From the decor to the staff and finally the food. We had the pleasure of sitting at the bar which is a particular favorite of mine. You get a great sense of the staff. With an air of relaxed comfort we perused the daily menu. After having the bartender create a concoction for my very own we looked through the menu and decided on a lovely avocado salad, beet gnocchi and one of the most amazing risottos I have ever had. The chef used a mastery of flavor that on this particular occasion had an Asian influence. From the hint of sesame in the dressing of the salad to the discreet taste of possibly ginger and soy in the risotto it was unbelievable. We finished off with a cherry bread pudding that blew my mind. Being from California we are foodies galore. Most of the time you find a place like this once in a lifetime. If you have the opportunity to visit I would do it many times i could and enjoy every meal. Bravo my friends... read more

Absolutely amazing from start to finish. Linear might be the best place to eat in Grand Rapids. It's definitely the best at its price point. My wife and I had the friend mushroom starter and split the grilled avocado salad. Both were phenomenal and complex. She finished with the sweet potato gnocchi main course, while I opted for the stuffed quail. From what I tasted, the gnocchi was superb, but the quail stole the show. Three birds cooked to perfection atop new potatoes made for a perfectly satisfying winter meal. The preparation was on point and the portion sizes were just right for two. This may be my new favorite place. My brother and I took my Dad and his fiancee out for Father's Day and it checked all the boxes. The food was phenomenal. We all cook quite a bit, one of us professionally, so we do have high standards here. We did go with four courses because it was a special occasion and we were all full but not waddling out the door so I would say portions were perfect. The food itself was insane. For starters we got the ceviche and the snap peas. The ceviche was firm and bright without being too overwhelmingly citrus tasting, very cleansing and bright. The peas were a huge surprise, since they were my Dad's pick and i wasn't crazy excited about them before they got to the table. If you go here order them. The peas are crispy but still fresh and they are served with pistachio butter, which I had never had but is one of my new favorite things. I would eat this starter every day, as a meal and I dont even have a particular fondness for the ingredients separately when I come across them in the world. These guys just know what they are doing. Our soups and salads were bright, clean flavors and texturally perfect. Main courses we got a fish that was prepared with an Asian flavor pallet over soba which is not a hugely common preparation, but was delicious nonetheless. We also had wygu steak (phenominal) and veal tenderloin. As much as I love veal, I lived the red cabbage on that plate even more. It was very saucy (in an excellent way) and perfect tenderness. For dessert we got macarons, bread pudding, and cheese cake, all complex flavors, all well executed, none of which we ate and thought "gosh, I shouldn't have gotten any dessert after that meal." The food was "constantly remind yourself not to lick the sauces off the plates" good. Drinks were awesome. I generally like sweet drinks with clear liquors and I had several smooth drinks with fresh cucumber and dark liquor or dark liquor and vanilla that were scrumptious. A few of us went with wine as recommended by our waitress, all of which were awesome. We wrote down the names to buy later. Service was amazing, probably the best I've had anywhere. Our main waitress was Ame. We are admittedly an indecisive and quasi high maintenance group and she answered all our questions and gave spot on recommendations for everything. We never felt rushed even though it was a pretty busy night and there were new people on staff. We got to order each course individually which is great when you have this many courses so you can order, chat, eat, think if you are really willing to commit to another course, and repeat. We literally were there for almost three hours and never felt rushed, or like we were hassling anyone. We didnt even realize we were there that long until we left. The only issue we had the whole time was the wygu was dropped off by a food runner at the wrong temp. We had time to look at it, mentally clock the mistake, and our waitress was there, said it was the wrong temp, got us a new one and took it off the bill all without us having to say anything. We also had the manager checking in on us throughout the night. We didn't know she was the manager until the actual chef among us asked about working there he was so in love with the place and she gave him her card. Genuinely helpful and knowledgable, we all had a good chat about food processes and such. We also had a THIRD girl, super sweet, who was there on her first day ever. She came around to fill our waters every time we drank a few fingers down. It was as close as you can get to a literal endlessly unmoving waterline on a glass without being obnoxious. We are also those people that point at foods or drinks and ooh and ahh over them then wave down the first people we see to get us one and find out what it is, everyone was a great sport. Prices are what I would expect from this level of service and product. I'm definately going back with my girls sometime, lunch is also crazy reasonable. Probably not a 5 days a week dinner place in most budgets, but if you can afford it go forth and devour. The only "things to know before going" is you may want to call ahead for a dinner reservation to be on the safe side, we had called originally for 6:30 on Thursday and we switched to 7 because they weren't sure they could for sure fit us at that time slot. We were still seated exactly on time for our 7pm time slot. There is also a small parking lot plus street parking, so give yourself some extra time for finding a spot. This place is awesome and reasonably priced for what you get. We ordered several plates and got a variety of flavors which is one of our favorite things to do. So if you like sharing small plates this is the spot for you. The carrot pots de creme is a great appetizer. Our favorite entree was the quail but we also really appreciated the beet gnocci. The panna cotta dessert was light and fresh, not overwhelming in any way. We just wished it came with a few black berries on the plate as well, because the cookie is small, and it would be good to have something to eat with the extra panna cotta. read more

This is one of my favorite spots to go in Grand Rapids when I am in town. I frequently visit to see family and we always end up going to Linear as it is a family favorite. They have a full bar so can make any drink you ask for but they also have fun cocktails. On my most recent visit I got barrel aged gin drink and it was excellent. I highly recommend trying one of their unique cocktails when you go in. The frequently change up there dinner menu so there is always something new and different when I go in. On the most recent menu my family got the cheese board which has a variety of meats, cheese, and some dips. It is a great starter to share. We also had the scallop app with a carrot sauce. There was only one scallop on the app so I would recommend getting multiple of these if you have a larger party. It was definitely a fan favorite. The scallop was so perfectly cooked. I wish I could cook scallops at home that well. For dinner I had a scallop dinner which was served with Spanish rice and plantains mostly due to how good the scallop app was and it did not disappoint. My father has the duck dish. My father loves duck but is often disappointed with duck at restaurants but said this was some of the best he has ever had. He wouldn't even let anyone try a bit. The *alcoholic drinks were exceptional, however, the food was cold (flatbread w/sausage) and the portions were small. Also, it was 1 PM and they were out of brunch items so the menu was VERY limited. Kind of disappointing because the website says they provide brunch until 3 PM. The service was "ok." Some people at our table did not get water refills. Once again, unfortunate because we had to wait 40 minutes for the food to come out. *If it weren't for the (pretty darn good) drinks I would rate 1 star read more

Excellent Service (Ami is the BEST) and Chris (chef) is fabulous! If you haven't tried Linear, add it to your list! Great for foodies or if you want to try something new. Let's be serious. This is a serious dining and libation venue just outside downtown GR. The food is creative and delicious along with attentive and warm staff. When a restaurant in a mid-size city is about quality of cusine, libation and atmosphere at fair market prices it is a winner. Linear has it together. So refreshing to have this venue on the river. I choose this restaurant for a celebration with my girlfriend. There was an error with the reservation service for outdoor seating, which would have been completely fine and we would have been fine sitting inside instead. However, we were prompted with an extremely rude and agitated individual. IT WAS THE OWNER. The largest issue was that I called earlier this evening to confirm my reservation and it was still incorrect. I cannot believe the owner had such poor customer service on an issue that was so small. I understand that there will always be issues with overlapping reservations, wait times, running out of food etc. But the one thing you can always control is the reaction to said issues. The fact that the owner could not run this restaurant with respect is sad. We believe this could have been due to our age (20's) but we are paying customers who are willing to pay $100s for a classy meal for a memory. This left a disgusted taste in our mouth. Still, we ate dinner at this restaurant due to reviews. We ordered the recommended steak and the food was very average. The waitress we had was good but the issues continued. My bill had to be recalculated multiple times because it was incorrect. I even was overruled on the bill until I pointed out they charged me for an item which was wrong. On another aspect- we thought the lack of respect was simply targeted at us. We thought wrong. We witness staff tell customers to try their food before they can be given salt and pepper. Since when can a customer not have additional salt and pepper on their food? I was blown away that OTHERS were being mistreated too. From ownership on down, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming, the vibe was great, the food was amazing and priced so well that you could try multiple things! I've been wanting to try Linear since they opened and I finally made it in. It's a cute and cozy restaurant with nice outdoor seating available. The menu is diverse and offers a variety from wagyu steak to scallops to gnocchi. We went for my husbands birthday and we both enjoyed the wagyu steak - I got the special and he got the one off the menu. Both cooked great and delicious. My mother got a salad and was disappointed it was saturated in dressing. We each enjoyed 2 cocktails (one off the regular menu and one off the "secret" tiki menu). We told the server it was my husbands bday and it would have been nice to get some sort of treat or acknowledgement for that. Overall we enjoyed and we will be back! read more

The food was fantastic and the atmosphere is great. We had a large group and they accommodated well. I got the sweet potato gnocchi which was delicious and my boyfriend got the steak (cooked perfectly) My only suggestion to the restaurant would be to serve steak knives with that meal. We heard (and read) many good things about this new place and we had to try it. Let me tel you that you need to check this joint out. Now, please know that we sat at the bar and each had a couple of drinks, but we will definitely be heading back for lunch or dinner. Ok. So, we walked in and were immediately greeted. We took the option to sit at the bar. We were greeted by the bartender and shown the drink and food menus. We ordered a couple of the creative cocktails and they were delicious! We then went for an elegant glass of wine and a classy spirit (neat). The decor is fabulous and the ambiance is soothing. That may sound weird, but just go experience it for yourself. We needed to get home to the kids, but would've loved to stay longer. After our two drinks each we asked for the check and paid. We said "goodbye" (for now) and two of the staff knew our names.
