The service is good and prices are reasonable. They are open until 2am and door dash delivers.

I got a full bag of groceries for under $50: - half a papaya - amazing color, flavor so-so - Italian sparkling water, sale $3.29 - Lesser Evil popcorn (2), sale $2.99 - organic peaches (2) - organic carrots - Bariani olive oil - yay they carry this! Will explore more in the future - they source a lot of their produce from small producers like Tomatero but the berries are Driscoll and Giant. Service was professional and straightforward - they all looked like they enjoyed working in the environment. A perfect mash up of a gourmet, natural and conventional store.

Now Alameda is not a small town but I think this store has been around for a while and they just don't want to get rid of it. In my town, they've unfortunately got rid of any small or independent markets, all swallowed up by big corporate grocery stores. I frown upon that big time. Now even though I love the charm of this indy market, there are some things that aren't as ideal as I'm used to. I'll give some pros and cons here on some of my observations. PRO: They have a rack of Semifreddi Bread. And since that bakery is in the same town, it is pretty darn fresh. Small fresh produce section with decent organic offerings. CON: almost nothing in the produce section is labeled or has prices. I've never seen that before. PRO: They have a full time butcher's case with actual employees manning it. So nothing is prewrapped in styrofoam trays. And I'm sure you can get butcher's service like requesting a prime rib for the holidays, getting certain hard to find cuts that maybe they can order etc. They even make their own Italian sausage which I've already tried and is legit. CON: Some of the product can look a bit tired/dated, I'm just not sure if the traffic can support their inventory. I went once and was able to pick up a few things, then I went another time and I passed as many things did not look up to par. PRO: Pretty good gourmet offerings like cheese and condiments. Much more gourmet than Safeway and about on par with Whole Foods. CON: Pretty much same price as Whole Foods, maybe even more. I've only been in 3 times and not sure if there is a good enough pull for me. But I work somewhat near, so I may pop in here and there and see what they got. 3 stars = coin flip.

We shop there occasionally (three-four times a year). Can't say much about owner(s) or employees as I never interacted much other than "in out, bing bang" and that's it. I didn't notice or experience any rude or "strange" behavior, neither from customers nor employees, otherwise it would've been one star just like all those other reviews (I rarely give five stars to businesses). Also I noticed during my brief shopping visits that other patrons at that moment were from different cultures, speaking different languages, and from different ethnic backgrounds. Truly a diverse and multicultural environment. Finally to Abigail C.: Maybe you should take your rowdy, sugar hopped-up kids to the park to play or spend more time teaching them good manners. Don't be shifting your shortcomings as a parent to others around you. *I am not related to this business owner(s) and am not an everyday/"regular" visitor but reviewers with low self-esteem and an inferiority complex should consider some kind of therapy or even learning a thing or two about different cultures, or perhaps learning a different language before labeling people as racist, bigots, homophobes or any kind of "phobes".

I genuinely asked him what we did wrong and he angrily waved us out of the store. We are a multicultural family, so not sure if race played into things. It was a very unnerving experience!

I've lived near it for…read moremuch of my life, and Sam (plus his wife, and Amy, and Carl's brother whose name I can't recall, and Carl himself who now owns a market in Dublin) has made it the greatest. The pricing is always on par or usually lower than other spots in town. During the pandemic, a beloved clerk there (Kenny, miss you!) told me that a customer had told him they should raise prices on an item, because another market in town was selling it for 30% more or so. Kenny mentioned that to Sam, who firmly said, "no, I'm not raising prices." Our hero. He also stocks things for neighborhood locals if they even mention wanting them. It's the spot for every kid to run into and pick out an ice cream or candy (and maybe tell Amy about their baseball game, she always asks). I went in a few years back after living elsewhere for years, and Sam was so lovely. He also knows my entire family - Mom and Dad go in all the time; Dad is now buying most groceries there; my sister, brother-in-law, and nephews lived in the neighborhood for most of the last years and they travel here weekly now and usually hit up A-1 to get favorites. They have amazing vegetarian and vegan options; the produce is ALWAYS fresh and well-picked (and priced - best price for avocados); the frozen foods are always interesting and tempting; and they have fresh Firebrand bread every day! It's also a really safe space for everyone - kids, adults, all of us. Between the lovely culture he's created, and the insane merchandising skill, and the products... I think Sam might be a magician. Go! You will not be disappointed.

Checkout is usually pretty quick. Plus's for me are organic fruit and vegies, salmon, pappidoms, prosecco, brut, cheese, yougurt, sour cream, cottage cheese and tinned fish. The kids call it tinned fish now days. Try ordering "tinned fish" at a wine bar in SF and see your wallet shrink. Not so at TJ's, affordably priced like back in the day. Great selection for a light dinner or snack with the aforementioned cheese. Free snacks are always great. Go back for 2nds and 3rds. Also, single bottles/cans of beer so you can mix and match your on 6 pack with provided carrying case. If you drink to much of this stuff it's the only 6 pack you'll have, BTW. They recently put in a tall freezer isle to handle more product. They are still wirking oit the bugs since usually the glass is so fogged up you can't see anything and when you open the door there are 3-4 inch icicles hanging off the shelves and frozen items. So all in all pretty good but this is a smaller TJ's so less stuff I think.

If I have ever been in need of help they've always been there for me. The layout is easy. The signs are in good shape. Just about the same as other Safeways which is nice and familiar. They have a good amount of veggies and fruits that are both organic and not. Well stocked in other areas too. Oh did I mention that they have their gas station too? Like what's not to love! Solid for me. No complaints! 5/(
