I hate leaving bad reviews for small businesses but still over a year later, the horrific experience I had here still haunts me. I had been going to Lisa for years! She was the best at highlights- I thought she was great at color. But I went in for an ombré and it was clear I was the first guinea pig. She painted on bleach (unevenly) to my hair and told me to sit - I trusted her process. I felt the foil burning on my ear, something was wrong. When I told her, she said, "oh honey, you're just cooking!" I sure was. When she rinsed me, she started speaking in any language but English to her coworker. My hair was falling out in chunks and when I reached to touch my hair in the sink it felt like overcooked glass noodles. Breaking in my hands. I watched her try to cover it up, pulling the hair that was falling out into a towel. I was in shock. The other stylist was telling me how nice it looked but the entire salon stopped talking. The other stylist was also working on my hair even though I specifically made an appointment with Lisa. She's not good about honoring that. Her friend walked in midway through my session and boom! She was gone working on that girls color. She may be good at color but not good at any new techniques. She burned my hair. I sort of went into shock, paid her, ripped her, and left. I cried when I went home and saw the uneven color in the back. Pieces of my hair didn't even pass my chin. I went in with hair past my shoulders. When I finally got in touch with reality I called her and left a message the next day. I told her I shouldn't have had to pay for this (top dollar I might add) and I was going to have to cut it off. She told me in a voicemail she didn't see anything wrong with it. (Holy crap you have to be blind to think that, but anyway) I've never been back but went to another salon and got the shortest bob of my life- hey when life gives you lemons... But I write this so you don't make that mistake. Sure, hair grows back but I still kick myself today for paying her and for not speaking up. So, I never know where to go to get a good men's haircut. I'm a regular guy, with curly hair, and while anyone can cut it, only a few people can make me look really good. There's all the overpriced places near my office in midtown, but haircutters are in and out of those places like revolving doors. You end up paying $40 for a crummy cut. Then there's the places in Brooklyn. They're either dirty "salons" where you're the only guy in there, or they're the barber shop down the street, which is fine, but they don't know what to do with my curls. Enter Nicole, at Lisa Lobue. I walked in off the street, and Nicole sat me down and knew exactly how my curly hair needed to be cut. The price was only $20! She made me look great and and I highly recommend her. You'll probably stop reading my review after this next sentence. But I am one of those go-to-the-nearest-GreatClips-for-a-$10-dollar-haircut kind of girl. Haven't met one? We are a rare bread. If you are still reading, I have had my salon experiences and quite good ones at that. I just hate spending $50+ for a trim no one is going to notice, so I usually reserved my salon experiences for "my boyfriend just broke up with me" kind of visits. That being said, I moved to New York (Park Slope) and become another one of those pretentious yuppies that doesn't mind spending a little more for some quality pampering. CUE: Lisa Lobue. She squeezed me in last second, and I gave her very little direction of what I wanted (a.k.a throwing in random Zoey Deschanel references and haircut horror stories) and she got the cut and style on point. Sometimes it can be hard to find a place for a good men's haircut. I was complaining to my boss that I've had nothing but lousy haircuts since I've moved to New York. He said, "Come on. We're visiting Lisa." Then everything changed for the better. Lisa gave me the best haircut that I've had in a long time. I gave her free reign to do whatever she wanted, and she broke me out of a stale style lock I had going on for 15 years. I was so impressed with her work. Many stylists can send you home with your hair looking great, but the next day it's hard to get it just like they did. That's not the case with Lisa. My hair still looks great a month later when it's time to cut it again. In the past I just kind of felt blase about my hair. Now when I see myself in the mirror, I love how it looks and even have a boost of confidence. Beyond the actual haircut, Lisa builds a great experience for her clients. I tend to be reserved when I meet new people, but she knew how to pull me out of my shell. She tells stories constantly - the kind where you want to hear what she has to say next. She's a lifetime Park Sloper and third generation stylist - so she has plenty of stories to tell. To give you an idea of my enthusiasm, I traditionally don't even talk about getting a haircut. However, each time I visit Lisa I tell everyone I encounter for the next few days. I don't really write Yelp reviews, but I spent 20 minutes on this because I want people to know how much I love her work. I've even blogged about her cuts twice. My hair dresser Nicole moved to this spot and I couldn't be more pleased. The place itself is amazing. Everything is new and stylish and everyone from the assistants to the hair dressers to the owner is very helpful and friendly. If you want to look and feel like you're getting a triple digit price haircut for a mere fraction of the cost, I would highly recommend this place. Nicole brings an unrivaled understanding of hair and styling to this fantastic shop. If you want someone who caters to each of her clients and takes into account such things as face shape, hair type, skin tone and lots of other things I would never have thought could make a difference, than ask for Nicole. What she also brings is her '$20 Wednesdays'. Even on her other days (Tuesday and Saturday) she only charges $25. If you're looking to squeeze in a pandemic haircut in a way that mitigates risk, I highly recommend Lisa Lo Bue. She's given my four-year-old the only four haircuts she's had in her entire life, the latest of which was yesterday OUTSIDE. Lisa's shop is open, but I simply asked if she'd be willing to cut my kid's and my hair outside instead, and she enthusiastically agreed. She moved the chair out to the sidewalk, sprayed our hair rather than shampooing, we skipped the blow dry, and we were both in and out in 45 minutes, for $65 dollars (total for the two haircuts, I think it's $20 for my kid and $45 for me). Lisa wore a mask the entire time, as did we. And she gave my kid a toy stamp at the end, further endearing her to my kid's heart. I feel like a new person and my kid looks so grown up - with less tangled hair as a bonus. I'm very grateful to Lisa for her flexibility and for taking our precautions so seriously! read more

I will be a regular here. Super friendly, great prices, excellent cuts. There wasn't much of an introduction needed with Lisa. After meeting her, we jumped right into conversation (no uncomfortable silence like a lot of spots, no forced, rigid smalltalk like a lot of spots). She was even kind enough to offer help in my apartment and job hunt, taking my number and giving me a few leads to check out. A woman who deeply cares about her neighborhood and her work. Anybody with a bad experience, try again. This isn't a place so prideful in its ideas that you have to leave with whatever results you're first given. Speak up about what you want and request adjustments if they're necessary. A good hairdresser (read: Lisa) is performing a balancing act between their creative ideas and the vision in your head. Be clear about it, and trust that you'll be heard. To read a complaint that your hair was left too long boggles my mind: Ask them to CUT MORE OFF... Amiright? read more

I have been here a couple times and had a good haircut with Tamara when she was there. But what makes me frustrated is that i always make an appointment and am never seen on my appointment time. The last time i was in there was the absolute worst. I waited over 30 minutes past my appointment time and the owner, lisa gave me a very rough quick 10 minute blow dry that i couldnt see until she was done. It was so awful after she was done i had to go home and redo it. I was upset about how rushed and sloppy the work was. Your customers are paying you for a service and expect to be treated with care and respect. I will not be returning. She clearly needs more staff and to stop over booking herself. It made my night more stressful and she made me late to my event because she took multirole clients before me even though i made an appointment way earlier. Just ridiculous! read more

So I read the reviews, absolutely knew what I was walking into, but what's important for me is the end result, and it was good. Halfway through the cut I already knew she was cutting it right, unlike my other terrible experiences with other men's barbershop nearby. I've been going to Lisa for haircuts for almost 14 years. As my mom says, "she knows how to cut curly hair." I live in Detroit now and I still hold out on a haircut till I'm in New York and can see Lisa. It's the best cuts I've ever had, at a very reasonable price. And on top of that, Lisa is a wonderful person. i had just gotten home from church (i'm not religious, although my name is jewish) and my recent obsession of getting my hair trimmed was beginning to re-surface. ah yes. to my right, a hair salon. i enter. the interior is a baby born from west elm and ikea. it's stylish and the soft whispered - and dominantly beautiful - receptionist assisted me with my coat, a cup of water and a haircut in the next 5 minutes. there was only one stylist present - a sunday special - and she performed her task nicely. my hair is receding - in a sexy way - and she knew just what to do with a picture i forced on her of jude law. "oh, that's easy." i tipped 10 dollars - because of the extremely sincere service and because that's all i had in cash. ha. she deserved it. nice to have in the neighborhood. read more

When I came in for a cut, all I can say was that I was extremely uncomfortable in this tiny salon. There was a dog and a small child, plus two or three stylists. There was barely room to pass by people when I got up from the chair to go to the sink, etc. The hairstylist didn't speak to me at all during the cut. She looked miserable, which is why I still tipped well since I figured she was not paid well. The salon was dirty and cluttered, and the mirror was too high for the chair I was sitting in, and I could barely see as the stylist cut my hair. For $60, I can do better. read more

One of the worst haircuts in my life. I went there on a whim thanks to the good reviews on yelp. I got in with 10min notice and was scheduled with Maryann. The salon has this old school vibe to it- the lady that washed my hair smelled like cigarettes, everyone was gossiping about clients and friends and the accents were very SI/NJ. I guess people were nice. Maryann asked me what I wanted, I told her I need my hair thinned out a lot as I have very thick hair and just cut even. My problem is that I never know what my hair would look like as every hairdresser usually blow dries my hair while cutting so they can do the length better. She thinned it out and cut very little and it looked okay...coz it was blow dried. Next day I wash my hair...and it looks awful- she gave me a bowl cut. When I go into a salon and pay $50+ for a haircut I expect the person cutting my hair to have basic understanding of different type of hair. When you have hair as thick as mine, not cutting in layers results in absolute mess. all my hair from underneath puffs up and it just really looks bad. I called and asked for Maryann, told her I was not happy with my haircut and she told me to come back, which was nice... But I thought better of it, if she had no common sense as to what to do with my hair, having her do layer on me might be eve more disastrous...and there is no coming back as my hair was already short enough. After coming here 3 times to get my haircut I was overall happy with the results. The place is small and a little dirty but at least my haircut was decent. So when I made an appointment for Saturday at 1030 I was surprised when I showed up that the doors were locked. I called and a message said "we open at 1030 Saturday". Ok, that's great, but shouldn't you be ready for customers at 1030? I decided to wait for a few minutes after 1030 and saw one person who presumably an employee roll up at 1034. She didn't notice me standing there and was in some sort of flurry. No problem, I walked away, left a message that I am no longer a customer if my time is not respected and walked up to "from head to toe" on 7th. Everyone is welcome and its always a blast. I've sent more than 5 friends here so far and they all return. I've even had people ask me on the street where I get my hair cut because she rocks it! I've been going to Lisa since 1999.....this was way before she opened up her own shop in Park Slope and can I say, from the first time she cut my hair, I've been hooked!!!! Lisa is THE ONLY person I trust with my hair and that says alot about a stylist. Even when I moved to Virginia, I refused to let anyone color my hair because I knew they wouldn't get it right. Lisa is not the type of stylist that agrees with you even if the style/color will not look good on you. Trust me, I've had stylists who have done that in the past and to me, you're not a stylist if all you do is sit and nod your head....that's what dogs are for. But Lisa, oh no....she will tell you what color suits your complexion as well as the type of style that frames your face. Cause let's face it, at the end of the day you want to look and feel like a million bucks without breaking the bank, right? I've been every color as well as every length and you wanna laugh? When I go see Lisa, I let her have full reign when it comes to coloring my hair because I know whatever color she selects will look good........AND I've NEVER left unhappy!! I came into this salon for a wash and blowout and it was done well. I am reading amazing reviews for haircuts, so I have yet to try that...but my blowout was a success. I left a happy customer. Lisa is great. She listens to exactly what you want and can make it happen. I have longish hair on the thinner side and I'm really particular about cutting off too much length or over-layering, and she got it just right. The blow out was good too. And the best part - $50 for a cut AND blow dry. You just will not find that price at a place this good anywhere else. The only part that threw me off a little is that one girl washes your hair, Lisa cuts, and another girl blow dries. I asked if they split tips and they said yes, so it was fine. I believe Lisa does all the haircutting and coloring consultation/mixing, so it's nice to know that you're going to get the same service every time you're in the salon. read more
