I went in for a curly cut with Sachi, and had a great experience. It's my first time trying a curly cut for my 2b/2c waves, and a step into taking a low-heat cleanse for healthier hair. After years of straightening I wanted to try and wear my natural hair out more. After hearing my concerns over my hair weight, frizz and wanting easy styling, Sachi was super great at advising what we should do. Penny assisted Sachi in the hair wash process and it was super relaxing. Everyone was super friendly, and the whole cut took about 1 hours. It is def on the pricier side, but as someone who only gets a cut once a year this seemed worth it to me. Curious what it's like to get your hair cut during COVID19? Salon 718 worked super hard to make sure this was a safe and pleasant experience. I'll start off by saying, I desperately needed a haircut. I've been blowing my hair straight since I could walk, and during quarantine I've been letting my hair go natural for the first time in my life. I needed some curly girl handholding and a stylist familiar with curls to help give me some shape. Jonathan was amazing at this. When I walked in they took my temperature and handed me a robe and towel wrapped in a plastic package for extra saftey. And as expected, all the staff + customers were wearing masks. Only 4 chairs total were being used at a time, so they were really mindful of leaving a safe distance. My stylist Jonathan also told he's required to get tested every 2 weeks. Now for my curly cut experience - Jonathan was so knowledgable about curly hair, cut style, curly hair routine (crucial and so complicated). He thoroughly explained all this to me, which I really needed. We just took a few inches off the bottom and gave a few more light layers to help with shape and volume. He walked me though adding product, drying my hair, and styling it. It was so much more than a haircut! Such a disappointing experience with Ariana. Before & After pics attached. After pic was taken 1 hr after my appointment at 718. Before pic was taken the day before. Came for a keratin treatment but left with frizzy, thin hair that reverted back to its natural state within 24hrs. Experienced SO much breakage during the process due to the stylist combing my dry 4c hair with a fine tooth comb. My hair was handled roughly throughout the entire experience and just hasn't been the same since this appointment...I think I may just need to cut it off at this point. So disappointing & not welcoming of textured hair as advertised. I was looking for a salon in my neighborhood to become a regular at. I saw that salon 718 touted itself as being inclusive of all hair types, carried Mizani products and even had Mizani certified stylists. I decided to give it a try. For context, I am half Black and my hair is a good representation of that. I came here a total of 4 times and took appointments with 3 different hairstylists. The first 2 appointments were with Stephanie and Kateryna. Stephanie did a good job blowing out my hair and I was also happy with Kateryna (at first), who seemed to take the necessary time to take care of my hair. My 3rd appointment was a last minute one and I got scheduled with Alyssa. She made multiple comments about my hair texture, which included: complaints that my hair was impossible to detangle, told me to stop using my current products like Olaplex and Ouidad (which I am very knowledgeable of -- I am a beauty journalist), did not use any detangling spray as I recommended, told me I need to put a special note when making an appointment because I have "too much hair". It was abundantly clear that Alyssa had no training and experience taking care of textured hair. This appointment left me feeling very uncomfortable and I decided to go back to Kateryna. Unfortunately, the tone was completely different this time around. I booked my usual blowout and a Mizani treatment which had been very kindly recommended by one of the assistants prior. When I arrived, I was told that the Mizani treatment wasn't available. I was disappointed but decided to trust the stylist's judgment to go with another option. I also noted that I usually get a treatment once a month and usually sit 15 minutes under the dryer (instead of way longer like most people with textured hair). I stayed under for 5 minutes tops. Again, I decided to trust her judgment as I am not familiar with the product. She proceeded to blowout my hair and I am very unhappy with the result. The ends aren't curled like last time and it overall looks frizzy. I immediately put it up in a bun as I walked out. If only it stopped there. Kateryna ended the appointment saying that I needed to be charged more for detangling on top of the extra fee for long hair that I am used to. I shared that this is something I've never been charged extra for (I usually go to a Black or Dominican salon) and that detangling is a part of the process for anyone with textured hair. She insisted and said I would be charged more next time I book. She did not say goodbye and left me with my wet towel, robe and frizzy hair in the chair. I was shocked by her attitude and bias towards me. It is important for me to share these experiences to inform other people of color, in particular Black or mixed people, what to expect as they may be considering this salon. I was shown on multiple occasions that my hair type was not welcomed here and that the stylists I've booked with do not know how to take care of all hair types as the salon advertises itself. I am extremely disappointed and hurt by these experiences. I highly suggest the salon stops touting itself as being inclusive when it clearly isn't. This experience makes me happy that NY state recently passed a law requiring all hair schools to teach students about textured hair. Hopefully the next generation won't have to deal with these types of interactions and micro aggressions in a setting that is supposed to be relaxing. read more

Haircut was ok, my ask was also very simple, but the overall service wasn't great, lack of attention, washing chair was uncomfortable, and I almost got heat burn on back of my neck from blow dry (by the assistant, clearly inexperienced), and only a casual sorry. I told the cashier about it when I pay, she was like "oh let me see...humm I don't see anything, it seems fine...I'll tell her it was too hot". I was speechless by that response, cold and unapologetic, take customers for granted, didn't even try to show empathy or care. All started with hairdresser in a bad mood asking me as I sit if I confirm my time cuz I was late, mind u I was scheduled for 4:30, they asked me to come 1 hour early, cuz was my first time and hairdresser want make me some questions, I told I couldn't do 3:30, but I could come 3:45, as I had to leave early of work, so I'm accommodating you, as I have no other option as last minute request I couldn't found other option! reality is she had another appointment at 5 so she didn't need take her time with me, she need rush to finish! Booked an appointment after attending a sneak peak of the services they provide during a yelp elite event and was happy I did! As soon as I entered, was pleasantly greeted, had my coat checked and was provided with several options of my beverage of choice, to quench my thirst. I waited a few minutes to be serviced due to arriving 30 minutes earlier than my scheduled appointment, and was happy to be seen earlier than originally scheduled. As I discussed the color and style I envisioned, my stylist Josh was very accommodating and insightful in recommending different options to achieve the look I was interested in. My process was a lengthy one, as I anticipated, yet I was super relaxed and comfortable with the entire process and surroundings. Thankfully I had a lot of time to spare and was not in a rush to leave and my stylist was great at checking up on me and my hair processes. I left very satisfied with the color and style as well as the discount, I surprisingly received. Jenn is a hair goddess!! I had never done something this crazy before (dying it silver) and she knew exactly what she was doing. My hair is dark brown so I was worried about the damage if I were to go full silver, and Jenn told me to go with a full highlight. And full highlight she did! It's beautiful. I will have to come back again for her. Save yourself a trip to Manhattan / Williamsburg and go here. First haircut since quarantine - yay! I'm a low-maitenance hair kinda gal so in my nearly 13 years in NYC I never bothered to find a go-to salon. I just hopped around whenever I saw a good promotion. Had some bad Groupon experiences... you know the drill... Was thrilled to find Karina last year, but alas she is on extended maternity leave. I took another chance and picked another stylist from the Vanderbilt location. Happy to report I found Jenn! Love my calligraphy cut- was skeptical it was just a gimmick but turns out it really makes a difference with thin hair. My hair has starting thinning recently due to a medication I take plus regular aging (sigh) and it's been giving me major anxiety. Jenn gave me the gentle push I needed to give extensions a try. Never thought I'd be "that gal" but as I get older I am finding that it's OK to invest in self-care, and, you really do get what you pay for. I'll be back later this fall and can't wait to see what magic she can do. One slight criticism - stylists can be a bit too assertive with the sales pitches for my taste - special products, upgrades etc. But I totally get that's how the industry works and especially crucial now with COVID affecting business. Lastly, I love that this is a Black-owned business with an inclusive business model that services different hair textures. Kudos to the owner and her vision! read more

I'm honestly a little hesitant to write about the gem that's Janine R. at Salon 718; however, my mom always taught me it's good to share. So here we are! I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair but for whatever reason, I've had a difficult time finding a place on Long Island. Salons that I've visited in that area tend to cut and style my hair in a way that makes me feel like I'm older in a bad way. I also tend to shy away from salons because pretentious ones make me feel uncomfortable real quick and then the whole event becomes unenjoyable. A girlfriend suggested I try a place closer to the city so I set my sights on Brooklyn. Finding this salon and Janine was serendipitous. My search parameters were proximity to a particular sushi restaurant and playground where my husband could take the kids while I got my hair done. I really like how you can make appointments online. I saw that there was an offer for 20% if you were a new customer, but I couldn't figure out how to get my online booking to reflect that discount so I just decided to call. I opted to get a calligraphy cut because I was equal parts curious and wanted to really treat myself. I had several questions about whether or not a calligraphy cut would be suitable for my hair and the receptionist answered all my questions thoroughly. Customer service was warm from the start as soon as I stepped through the door. The receptionist was gracious and offered me a choice from several beverages. Janine really took the time to just discuss what kind of hair cut I wanted and was also upfront that the picture I brought in did require some styling. I think what makes Janine a five star stylist is her warm personality and willingness to teach. She broke down exactly how to take care of my hair and style it to replicate the look I wanted without making me feel like I was wasting her time. Blow out was perfection and my haircut is exactly what I wanted. After three years of living on the East coast, I've finally found an amazing stylist! Tips are cash only. I like how they provide small envelopes for tips so you can avoid the whole hunting down who helped with your hair and giving tips out awkwardly bit. I saw Tristen for a full balayage and a haircut which I was more than pleased with. This was my first time at 718 (but not my first time getting a balayage). Tristen really made sure to listen to exactly what I wanted and delivered on everything, and then some! I have dark and very thick hair, which can take a while to work with. However, I was surprised with how fast Tristen was able to work with it -- I was out of the salon in less than 3 hours (usually it takes about 4-5)! For my haircut, I showed her pictures of what I wanted and she gave me exactly that, plus some useful styling tips as well. Very impressed with the ease she works with, all the while tackling other clients' needs. She's also easy and fun to talk with, so that's an added bonus too! I'm not surprised at all to see all of the great reviews of this place! I was a little early for my appointment but was immediately seated and introduced to my new hairstylist, Irving. I cannot say enough good things about him, he's just amazing! I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted but I just had two guidelines - keep a good amount of length & make sure that the shortest layers still fit in a ponytail. With only that said, he knew exactly what to do. He has a very unique cutting style that I haven't experienced before and cuts dry before washing then doing quick touch-ups when wet to make sure everything is even. He styled my hair beautifully with a curling iron and even gave me tips about how to twist my hair in a way that would preserve the styling for the next day. Not to mention he makes great conversation and makes you feel like you're old friends. What more could you ask for in a stylist? I recently moved out of Brooklyn but will 100% be coming back to see Irving for my next haircut. Side note: The first thing that I noticed when I walked in was two girls with big amazing curls getting cuts and/or color, which I have to note here since curly girls have trouble finding places that really know how to handle their hair. read more

I am super picky about my hair color. Until I was an adult, I had lightish brunette hair that naturally got golden highlights from the California sun. At 33 and living in NYC for the past decade, my natural color is more of a mousy brown. Colorists tend to think it's SUPER dark and don't believe me when I say it lifts a lot with bleach, so I often come out of the salon with unintentionally bright blonde hair. While I love being blonde and have gone fully blonde in recent years, I find unintentional blonde is never great. I had finally found a colorist I love at hairstories in Park Slope, but they shut down permanently during the pandemic. I went to another highly-regarded salon in October 2020 and was very unsatisfied. I figured, if I'm going to be mostly unsatisfied, why not find a salon walking distance from my home? That's when I found salon718 on Vanderbilt. I called them, told them my deal and requested a consultation. The coordinator recommended Ariana to me and quickly scheduled a virtual consult for that afternoon. Ariana seemed non-phased by my self-proclaimed difficult-ness, and really seemed to understand what I wanted and recommended a process that sounded spot-on. Overall, she did an excellent job! I usually feel a bit streaky and weird even after getting color that I like, but I did not at all. I kept checking it in different lighting to make sure there weren't any weird gaps, tones, or streaks, and I couldn't find a single thing I didn't like. I also have a LOT of long hair, and at that point it had been colored by at least 3-4 different people. Add in the challenge of highlighted hair that hasn't been properly kept on a color schedule (due to the pandemic), and I am so impressed. She managed to make my dark hair light with touches of golds without making it outright blonde. You can't see any highlight lines, it all blends really beautifully. I got a haircut from her a couple weeks later, and my only complaint is that she didn't take enough off. Which is my fault because I've learned to under-exaggerate how much I want cut as I find most stylists usually swing the opposite direction and chop off too much. I am so happy to have found a great colorist just a few blocks away! read more

Went in for full highlights and after speaking with the stylist we decided that something with a little less maintenance might be the best option for me. So I ended up with a balayage. Jonathan gave me the perfect color. Super flattering and exactly what I wanted. I just wish I had more, but that can be a treat for myself another time. The only down side was the styling after. I don't think many stylists have experience with kinky or ethnic hair and it was evident when the other stylist was applying product. So this is an area to possibly improve upon. Overall a good change to start the summer, but not the best for textured hair. read more

Who is a happy girl? I am! Why? Because of Shannon and my new favorite stylist Kai Evelyn at Salon 718, that's why! I am from San Francisco, CA. I flew out to visit my BF in NYC with the intention of getting a new haircut after two years of growing it out. I also have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and am pretty picky about who touches my hair (even when it looks like shit!) so before I even move forward with a new salon, I always do my research. That way, I have a better chance of getting the look that I desire. After some intense research, I found Salon 718 through LivingSocial and decided to just go for it. I set up my appointment, and the lady on the other line was able to book me with Kai Evelyn for today 9/2 at 5 pm! I was nervous and excited at the same time. As soon as I arrived at Salon 718 at the Vanderbilt location; everyone in there was polite and are very welcoming. After a few minutes, they sat me down and even offered me a drink. (I got coffee with cream and sugar -- SO AWESOME!) A little after they set me up at my station, Kai was still working on someone else's hair and told me that she'll be with me shortly, I appreciate the communication (excellent customer service indeed). I am in no rush at all, as I was watching her work on the other client's hair, which gave me plenty of hope that my hair would look just as fabulous as hers! So I let her take her time as I observed her skills in the making. And yes, it was truly amazing and gorgeous!!!! As Kai was finishing up, my OCD got me slightly nervous but excited at the same time. Kai noticed me slightly hyperventilating and asked if I was making any drastic changes, told her I wasn't but it has been a little over two years since my last cut. Kai was so kind enough to talk to me and calm my nerves with a consultation on how she would work on my hair and make it look fuller. (My hair thinned out throughout the years due to stress/life/junk food/pizza/burritos/french fries/cookies/sweets/fatty foods... lol). I told her straight up that I don't do crap to my hair other than tie it up or braid it down. No products, no hairdryer, straightener, none of that. I also mentioned that I eventually want to get silver balayage but after observing my hair she knew that could not happen unless I want some sort of issues in the long run. She explained her reasons well on why silver won't work on my dark hair, and I completely agree, after that, she recommended alternative coloring solutions like highlights instead of all silver, and I took her word for it and really appreciate her honesty when it came to my hair. After consultation, she had me go to Shannon for shampoo and deep conditioning treatment. Shannon has MAGIC FINGERS!!!! It was by far the best head massage I have gotten in such a long time. I almost fell asleep as she was lathering up my scalp. Shannon was also very communicative and always making sure I was comfortable, like making sure the water she used to wash my hair was a comfy temperature. Oh man, it.was.great. After the conditioning treatment, I went back to my station and Kai took over once again. Kai did such a fantastic job, even halfway through the cut I was just overjoyed on how GOOD it looked and it wasn't even done! And even after she did the finishing touches with the blow-dry, she continued to check for any unevenness and continued to trim here and there to get ultimate results. EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT!!! They treated me so well, I'm willing to wait for my next cut/color with them the next time I'm in NYC. Thank you again, Salon 718. Thank you, Kai and Shannon and everyone there. After reading many great reviews about this salon, I knew I had to try it! Unfortunately, I had a really poor experience. I went in requesting a light brown, however I left with copper/brassy colored hair. I'm not surprised, though, since the stylist let me leave the salon with soaking wet hair and I didn't notice the color until I got home and dried it myself. So, I went back to the salon to correct the color a few days later and unfortunately I came home with this (see photo below). Again, when I went back the second time the stylist only dried one strand of my hair to show me the color (however it was not consistent all throughout my hair).
