I have had my hair cut by Rudy a few times now, and every time, I love it! The last was a bit drastic for me- actual bangs. But I trusted Rudy, he took his time explaining his thought process, etc., and I love them! The main hair stylist had a temper. He unleashed it twice against me, the last (and final) time because I asked for additional trimming. The cut didn't seem quite complete. Suddenly he was yelling about another client waiting. He raised his voice. At me. I was stunned. Rudy cuts hair very well, but you have to be able to take the risk of being unexpectedly verbally attacked. Go here at your own risk. This was the second time he left me in tears. Needless to say, I can't recommend this shop, much as I would like to. I feel he should take a break or perhaps retire. The stresses of running a small business may be taking a toll on him personally I'll end this review. which I'm writing reluctantly. My haircut is 4" shorter than I asked for, but the color with Anthony is the ISSUE!!! $350 (just the color portion) for spots, streaks, and an overall HORRIBLE first & last time having my hair colored here. He also covered up my blonde, and did exactly what I said not to do which was make my hair warm and dark when I pull it back. TERRIBLE color! I've washed it 15 times in two weeks, and still can't get the freaking spots and streaks out. His answer when I showed him, "it will fade"! read more

My favorite curly hair cut in NYC to date! Rudy is a dream. I have been going to Devachan salon for too long - and always leave a bit unsatisfied... Wanting more shape, funk, style. But when you have natural curls - you know that you can't just go anywhere. I liked my friend's curly cut and she recommended Fez. The salon feels like a refined, sophisticated, and simple barbershop. I loved that. None of the pretension that comes with most salons. So apparently I don't know much about cutting hair, which is why I pay someone else to do it. I was of the delusion that Rudy was doing a good job until I saw another skilled person at another nearby salon just to give her a try. She pointed out how the bottom half of my hair looked thin and stringy despite the fact that I actually have lots of thick hair. I'd noticed this but didn't think much of it--figured it was just part of the growing-out process. I'm now getting my hair back into healthy good looking shape. All along Rudy used the wrong techniques and the vast improvement of my hair since leaving him supports this. read more

I really wanted this place to work out because my first visit was great, but the next two times Ieft in ruins, and have since found a better place. The first time, I wanted to take my hair from red to blonde--no easy feat for any colorist. But Roxie did it without even flinching. On top of that, she gave me a great hair cut for my curly hair. The second time, I went to touch up my roots, and I wanted a shorter hair cut, and I showed her pictures of what I wanted. After touching up my roots, she said that she'd play with my hair and try to get as close to what I wanted, as thick, curly hair can be limiting. Then all of the sudden, she said she was done, and what I had was a lame football helmet hair cut with no precision or vision. I asked her specifically to cut my hair shorter in certain areas and she wouldn't do it. I ended up leaving with wanting a bag to go over my head. I ended up going home and cutting it the way I wanted it myself, and it looked pretty damn good. I went to a friend of mine to clean it up in the back. Then I went the third time to get my roots done again. Not only did she not even realize that my hair was a totally different style, she even took credit for it!!! "Wow, your hair looks really good," she said. No thanks to you!!! Then the worst was yet to come. What should have been a simple roots touch up turned into a nightmare. After washing out the toner I realized Roxie looking nervous. I looked up in the mirror and my hair was f**** GREY! Then they applied another toner, and it was dirty dish blonde/brown. Roxie was trying to pawn it off on me saying although it was a different color, it looked good, and I said no way. So then she had to rebleach my hair again, leaving it in shambles. Since then I have started going to a different salon that gets cool, edgy hairstyles (even with my thick curly hair) and can take care of root touch-ups without any trauma involved. I have shoulder-length, tightly curly hair. I usually go in for a wash and cut, been four times, and I have only seen Rudy, the owner. What I like: no waiting, friendly service, massage while wash, no badgering from stylist (no judgment on going elsewhere, your current styling methods, etc), Rudy is Latino and knows curly hair, and above all is a good listener. I get exactly what I request, and he explains as he goes. What I would change: the products they use. Hmmm...a great salon with a lot of potential. But unfortunately, I just didn't get what I asked for. I came in for a consultation first, cause I get majorly nervous about changing my hair. I met with both Rudy (for cut) and Anthony (for color), and both seemed great. So I booked an appointment. I wanted highlights and a pretty simple cut with a few layers. I got the color first. Anthony is delightful. Oh my. Just so nice and so modest...loved him. I showed him a pic of what I wanted and he had showed me a swatch of color (so we seemed to be on the same page), yet somehow, my highlights ended up too subtle. I was looking to add some brightness to my face, so I was disappointed that that didn't happen. He said that in a week they would pop more..I guess they did a little...still too subtle:( I will say though that the work looks very good for what it is, and I think he's very talented. Rudy didn't follow what I asked for at all really. It was weird, cause we talked for a while about it. And I was like, really really simple..a few layers in the front...none in the back. Then he ended up putting a bunch of layers in the front, making the front significantly shorter than the back, and kind of choppy looking. Then I told him I like to style it really straight and sleek, and he made it all big and bouncy. That was bizarre. I left feeling weird. The receptionist gal is super nice. I really wanted to like this place. I just didn't get what I wanted, so what can you do. read more

Ever since I've convinced my husband to go to salons instead of a regular barber shop, he's become picky with who cuts his hair. So while staying with a friend in Cobble Hill, I searched Yelp for prospective salons nearby. Fez topped my list due to majority of 5 star reviews. And as you can see, we were convinced that this salon deserves 5. There was no fuss. We called that day and we were given an appointment. We got there and my husband got serviced right away. Roxie was his stylist and she just cut away! My husband was very pleased with the outcome. Their location is right across a school and a block away from a park. Their space is narrow but they have very tasteful interiors. I loved how they decorated for the holidays! They have friendly staff, too. read more

Rudy is one amazing guy. Not only did he create the uber-funky wire art on the walls of his salon, he will make your follicles blissfully happy and you will LOVE your hair. I was tired of local salons' staff exuding a "bored" attitude while minding my locks and charging me a stiff fee to do so... and decided I might be able to do better elsewhere. Rudy's name came up during a brief web search and led me to Fez. We talked a while about what I liked, didn't like, what I was open to, and how I *actually* style my hair on a daily basis (yeah, it sucks, I have it up in a ponytail all the time, but when I don't - I want fabulousness). He listened, shampooed me, snipped me, fluffed me, and I had a new style which was super easy to care for in no time. But wait, it gets better! Rudy's colorist is AMAZING. He put in some nice subtle highlights for me, and told me they would mature over time and I'd love them more and more. He was SO RIGHT. The gentle development of a beautiful blonde was great! I have never been happier with my hair than after this visit to this salon. So long as I live here I will never stray from my beloved Fez. read more

I have lived in NY for four years and had yet to visit a NY Salon until this Friday. I was a student and would time my hair cuts for when I was home in SF for vacation - (Rachel at Oxen Rose I LOVE YOU!!) - but it had been 6 months and I am not going west any time soon so I bit the bullet and decided to try a new salon! I have really thick, wavy-curly LONG LONG hair. A stylist once told me my hair was stressing her out mid-cut. I have had way too many bad hair cuts and I am very very weary of new stylist but Rudy at Fez was awesome and I am so glad that I took a chance on a new salon. My hair looks great! He spent alot of time playing with my hair before washing it just getting to know my hair. He asked me questions about what I wanted and really listened. He gave me a great wash - with a very nice head massage. I was in heaven! Then he started cutting and did exactly what we'd talked about. He cut long layers and thinned out my ends a little before diffusing my hair dry. I am really happy with my cut. My hair looks so much healthier and the layers look great. They are really subtle which is exactly what I was looking for. I really liked Rudy, he was really friendly and attentive. He listened and was really sweet. It will take time for me to develope the kind of love I have for Rachel for a new stylist but I think Rudy and I may be one the way there. I will definately be going again and recomending him to my freinds. The salon is only 2 months old and is decorated with mid-century furniture with white walls and a white tin ceiling. Before moving to this salon he worked at the Chandalier (also on 5th Avenue). I really liked it. It was modern and a little funky with out being fussy or over done. I've been to FEZ a few times now and every time I walk out completely satisfied. Anthony is an amazing colorist who really listens to what his customer wants and also gives you his educated opinion. I don't get my hair cut that often, and I never go to the same place twice. This is usually because I don't get anything too complicated done and after the first time it feels like the salons I go to usually rush me through the process. I have gone to Fez Salon maybe 6 times now and have never been disappointed. They are always really nice, give me great advice on how I can do my hair and they never, ever rush my cut. I've been going to Fez Salon in large part due to the stylist Natasha! She is absolutely amazing when it comes to my uber thick and curly hair. She is patient and intuitive when it comes to helping me decided how to revamp, and whether or not bangs are always a good idea :) I also love that she is personable and willing to deal with my indecisiveness as times. Having just learned she is no longer at Fez, I will totally be following her to her new Salon Dhaga, added bonus is still in the hood! I decided to try Fez after my other salon raised their prices... in a recession- go figure. My first visit was good enough for me to go back. I didn't recall the name of the stylist who cut my hair before so I asked the receptionist to make my appt with the person i saw last time. She said he wasn't in that day, but when i arrived he was (and there seemed to be an issue between him and the new girl i was apparently seeing). I don't like seeing new stylists at the same salon but i stayed. Big mistake. my cut was the worst i've ever experienced and I felt like i was in the middle of an episode of Salon Takeover. She clearly had very little experience and no one seemed interesting in coaching her. It's been 4 weeks and there is still a section in front that hasn't grown out. Overall they are affordable, but by no means should an inexperienced stylist be charging standard prices for what has become the worst cut i've had in 15 years. This review applies only to Rudy and Reina (the only two people who have cut my hair at Fez) and only to haircuts (I've never had it colored, so I can't comment on that). I have long-ish curly-ish hair, which I prefer to wear straight. I'm low-maintenance, and one of those people who delays haircuts (and other maybe more important things, like dental appointments?) because I hate the inevitable lecture about how I waited too long to come in. I get 2 or 3 haircuts a year, and in the meantime, when I've had a little too much wine I think it's the BEST IDEA EVER to cut my own bangs in my bathroom. So by the time I come in for a haircut, I'm a disaster. Rudy and Reina never judge me. They just cut my hair. They kindly remind me that I can come in and get a bang trim whenever I want for free, but don't lecture me about how I should stop drunk-trimming. They also (and this is CRITICAL to me), don't give me the same speech I've heard since I was 13 about how curly hair is beautiful and I should really be wearing it curly. When I say to them that I prefer to wear it straight, they give me a haircut that I can wear straight. Sometimes they'll give me curly hair styling tips, or dry it curly for me just to see what it's like, but they respect that I know what I like. I also like getting my haircut by both of them because they're really chill. Rudy in particular is pretty quiet, Reina I enjoy chatting with a little bit, but I don't feel pressure to keep up a conversation and I can just relax. I've never had product pushed on me. I appreciate that. I no longer live in the neighborhood, but still make the trek out to Fez (which actually doesn't say much about my commitment to them, since, as I said, it's a semi-annual trip). read more

I found Fez Salon while doing a Yelp search for salons that participate the Locks of Love program (a program where you cut off at least 10inches of hair and send it to be made into a wig for children undergoing chemotherapy). I have never had short hair and to say I was nervous would be a complete understatement. A friend and I walked in, were greeted immediately, and I was in the stylists chair within 10 minutes. I told the stylist what I wanted and what I was concerned about. She consulted with me and settled on an inverted bob so that I wouldn't freak out with too much short hair. I warned Heather (the stylist) that I would probably cry. She put my hair in a ponytail and cut it off. She then proceeded to shape my hair into a fun sassy bob. No tears were shed! Heather was professional, comforting and made the experience enjoyable. I left feeling confident of my short hair and armed with a ziplock back with my ponytail to mail to Locks of Love. I will without a doubt be back to Fez (and Heather). Highly recommend!! read more

The best place I've gotten a haircut in New York. Plus, everyone there is wonderfully nice. I travel between Los Angeles and NYC often and usually get my hair done in CA, but when I recently needed to get a cut I took the recommendation of several friends and tried out Fez. I was originally supposed to get a cut from Reina, but I got out of work late and got to my appointment 15 minutes late and Reina was already busy. Fortunately, they were very gracious and fit me in immediately with Rudy. Rudy was a great listener and gave me the exact cut I was hoping for. It was fresh and unique and I love it. You can tell that Rudy has a great deal of experience and is a real artist about his work. He also created the great wire sculptures that adorn the clean walls of the salon. Literally, JUST got back from getting my hair cut with Rudy and had to write a review. I am someone who HATES getting her hair cut (way too many bad experiences in my lifetime) but was in desperate need of a cut. Saw all the good reviews, so I thought I'd try Fez. My hair is very long and very thick, with long layers. Before they washed my hair, Rudy consulted with me about what I wanted, gave me some really good suggestions about the length of my layers and the layers around my face. He was pleasant but absolutely no 'tude. Really got into cutting my hair, no chit-chat or small talk which is really nice. Blew out my hair and it looks amazing! My hair feels about 5 lbs. lighter! The wash/cut/dry took almost an hour. The salon wasn't too crowded on a Thurs. afternoon so I probably got a little more time than usual. They didn't push any products or services on me. The salon was very minimal, but I'm not there for ambiance so much as to get a good cut. The receptionist was friendly. Absolutely loved the "no attitude." Price for the wash/cut/dry was $60 which is awesome compared to other places. You could probably find cheaper, but not get the best outcome. They accept credit cards for the bill, but not for the tip. HIGHLY recommend Rudy!!! read more

When I moved to Brooklyn I found Fez on Yelp and made an appointment with Reina. She has always given me great cuts and been super nice. I've been growing my hair out and Reina cut it so that the ends flip evenly on my shoulders instead of one side turning under and the other side flipping out. Awesome! I'm not the kind of girl who puts much effort into my hair and it makes a huge difference to get a really good cut that still looks decent four months later when I still haven't gotten around to dealing with it. It is also lovely to go into the salon after a few months and not get a lecture about how you should really have a trim every 6 weeks. I brought my sister when she was in town visiting and not only did her hair look great, but the next person who cut it said her hair was in excellent shape and had been cut really well...even the professionals agree, Reina gives an excellent haircut. ------ Update, Reina is no longer at Fez, but don't worry she and Natasha are now at Dhaga (294 5th Ave between 1st and 2nd) read more

Turned my hair orange!! I went a few months ago and I asked specifically asked for someone who was good with blondes, and they gave me someone who turned my hair this brassy yellow/orange color. It was obvious when my hair was dry that she f'd up, and she said she could wash out the "toner" she put in. I was too afraid for her to do anything else with my hair and left $200 later. Even the owner knew it didn't look right and said I could come back if I wasn't hapyy, which was good business on his part. But I didn't want to step foot back into that salon. Oh, she also told me the orange would fade but if anything it just got worse. I ended up having to spend $400 to get a color fix and it's going to take at least 2 more processes before it looks normal again. There might be some good colorists there but I wouldn't chance it. read more

This place use to be great, but unfortunately is no longer. Rudy has either lost interest all together or just doesn't care about listening to what his clients want. Unfortunately, he doesn't even do a good job cutting them a haircut that HE thinks they should have. I use to go to Fez when Anthony worked there for highlights...he IS and continues to be a miracle worker, but he is now at Sanctuary Salon in Boerum Hill, and wherever Anthony goes I will follow. I don't usually write reviews but I'm so annoyed right that now that I feel compelled to warn people about Fez. I went in last Friday for a trim. They were nice to accommodate me at the last minute, but now I'm paying the price. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the woman who butchered my hair. Kiki? I dunno. She cut a layer underneath my hair about an inch away from the nape of my neck. I do not know why she did this. It does not add to the hair cut and now I can't put my hair back in a ponytail. Just in time for summer. Great. All I wanted was a trim! She said something about tightening up the cut--I didn't know this meant giving me a friggin' fade in the back. Do not waste your time or money going to Fez. There's probably a reason why this woman had a last minute opening. I should have known better... read more

Ugh, what a disappointment. I was really hoping this would be my new favorite place. Kiwi cut my hair. She did a great job with layering and adding some texture, and was friendly enough. However, the first thing I told her was that I only wanted TWO inches cut off -- max. That was the only thing I repeated multiple times to her. I ended up with at least 4, if not 5 inches chopped. WTF?! Do I need to bring a tape measure for you to use? The difference between 2 and 5 inches is pretty f-ing big when it comes to hair. Other than the initial disappointment, this place has a nice atmosphere and I might give it another try. It just seems like they need to pay more attention to detail. read more
