This is an absolutely terrible airport if not the worst. It epitomizes inefficiency. Everything from arrival to going through security, even getting to your gate and finally earning the title of shining beacon of a completely antiquated tax refund system. If you made purchases outside of Portugal in the EU, get ready to embark on a nightmare of endless lines that move at a snail's pace.
Overall staff here is stressed and not very friendly at all. The spaces for movement are narrow and crowded with people trying to get to their destinations. Some architect had this genius idea to create approximate 48" wide pathways through retail shopping areas consequentially creating a cluster fuck of people stalled due to shoppers milling around endcaps of products browsing with no situational awareness.
The real nightmare is getting your tax refund from shopping. If Portugal is your last leg before departure, but you have shopped throughout the EU, get ready to embark on at least 3 to 5 lines before you get the refund.
First you must check-in your luggage with your airline and mention to the agent if the tax-free items are inside. This will never make any sense, but immediately afterwards, haul your checked-in luggage to another line for some guy to look at your papers and passport. He does not physically open your luggage in front of you, but next, it goes on a conveyer belt next which is to be loaded on your plane. Step two is now complete, and this guy does nothing to help the tax refund besides creating another destination for you and your luggage to go.
Step three can go two different ways. If you have other EU purchases outside of Portugal, congratulations, you get the 5 star experience of an exceptionally incompetent system.
The useless guy in "step two" directs everyone as if all purchases have been made in Portugal. Sadly, many find out after wasting another ten to fifteen minutes in the Planet or Global Blue lines that all purchases made in other EU countries need a customs stamp. You got it! There is another line for that! It is the obscenely long one with one agent who once again checks those receipts and your passport just like the useless guy downstairs. The only difference is you get a special stamp authenticating your purchase!! - but wait... The stamp agent just stamps. Now that you are ready for your refund, there is another line for that!
Proceed to step four and head back to Planet or Global Blue for your final step in the tax refund nightmare unique to Lisbon Airport.
Now you can go to your gate and relax. Not so fast! You must show your passport two more times before actually getting to your gate!
The turnstile to go to your gate is first, but if you didn't get your Portugal stamp in the passport, proceed to the far right to the customs agent. He will question you briefly about your destination and send you off with the stamp of passage to your gate.
Now, you can liesurely stroll to your gate and handle any hunger or restrooom business. I arrived three hours before my flight time and only had time to run to my gate. That would be slightly slower than sprinting.
If you are lucky, your flight may leave on time. Mine did not. I received further infliction of Lisbon's flawed and inefficient airport services. Traffic control says we have to wait 30 minutes due to "blah blah blah". Ten minutes later we do not, and our pilot announces the unusual circumstances.
There you have it. If you can avoid ending your Europe vacation here, that would be ideal. It is the worst airport ever. I ultimately missed my connecting flight!! read more
