This is a gem, a treasure trove, a hideout for geniuses and hair sorceresses. Two years ago, I felt like I had great hair. After two years of constant travel and on-the-road salon visits that resulted in multiple high- and low-end salon catastrophes, disasters, and heartbreaks ("let's just leave the bleach on for another 20 minutes" and "if you stand in light that's not too bright, it won't look so bad" and "let's just use the razor to get rid of this weight" and "it wasn't supposed to turn burgundy, but I think it suits you!" and "it's totally normal for most of your hair to break off after a hair color") I found myself with a little mop of horror instead of hair. Some stroke of unprecedented fortune brought me to Little Axe, where I arrived feeling hopeless and distrustful and shamed, and looking like my extremely long, extremely thick, and extremely textured hair had been dunked in a vat of black ink, then burned, and then put through a pencil sharpener during a hurricane. Haley (color) and Kristin (cut) are clever, kind, charming, calm, down to earth, and immensely sophisticated wizards and humanitarians. :-) Not only did they refrain from chastising me or freaking out at the large-scale mess they inherited, they also asked me what in my best dreams I would want it to look like, then devised a comprehensive and ambitious plan for making my mop into a glorious show-stopping mane. I didn't believe them. It seemed so far-fetched. So impossible. So improbable. I'd heard it all before, and left salons in tears and wearing a hat. Thus, as they snipped and trimmed and shaped and color corrected and hair painted and highlighted, I had a series of panic attacks and traumatic flashbacks and neurotic fears and they fed me tacos and rubbed my shoulders until I calmed down. How sweet is that? Two appointments later, and I am officially transformed, converted, and delighted. They went so above and beyond. It's the first time in years that I've been hair-happy again. In all seriousness: people who see me every day stopped in their tracks from a block away to shout "YOU LOOK GREAT! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?" People who haven't seen me in a year gasp and say, "what happened? have you spent a year on vacation? you look like a new woman!" And people actually pull me aside me on the street and subway to comment upon how lovely is The Hair and who are The Geniuses and other things that increase my will to live. :-) This cut and color is the best my hair has looked in probably forever, and it's to their credit that they inherited a nightmare and turned it into something magnificent. I also had a ton of fun there. They're good people. They're gifted people. And they do incredibly complex, high quality, imaginative, client-responsive work with creativity, humor, patience and grace. They're good for the hair, good for the soul. read more

Greatest cut I've had in a long time, and my first time color couldn't have turned out better! Kristen cut my hair exactly how I had imagined it! Which might be a first in my book. I've always liked my haircuts, I usually play it safe. I went to Little Axe to take my hair-do up a notch and I'm so thrilled with the results!! Coby is AWWWESOME! I've been getting my hair cut by Coby for about 10 years now. Prior to finding Coby, no other stylist ever really gave me the right haircut to suit my look and personality. Coby's amazing because she always gives me a look that suits ME. She's very intuitive, and also a great listener- communicating the look I want to achieve is never a problem. She's also very honest, and has never steered me wrong. Coby always keeps me current and encourages me to try new looks so I stay current. Without Coby, I probably wouldn't look half as cool... true story! I've sent many friends and co-workers to Coby who have either needed a new look or needed a botched haircut fixed, and *every single person* I've sent has raved about her. I have a lot of wavy hair and they know exactly how to razor cut it to give me exactly what I'm looking for each time. The grow out is amazing, and you get a free bang trim in between! I was referred to Little Axe by a coworker who recently started getting her hair cut there...her hair has never looked better and I wanted a salon close to my apartment in Williamsburg. I had the BEST experience. I had been growing out my summer highlights and was looking to return to a shade closer to my natural color - Haley could not have been sweeter and got exactly what I wanted in a few quick minutes of chatting. She applied a combination of gloss tones to my sad, grown out hair that needed a LOT of love. The color has GORGEOUS tone and looks rich and super healthy and natural and I have not stopped getting compliments since I walked out. Kristen cut my hair and helped support me through what ended up being a lot of inches off - I needed it, but I'm terrible with change - she totally got me and what i was going for strait form the get go and made excellent recommendations around how to get my hair to a healthier spot. Literally, my hair has never looked or felt healthier or more chic and I have never gotten so many compliments! I cannot wait to go back to her and Haley both! The salon itself is adorable and super welcoming. I immediately felt comfortable and at home. The products are gorgeous, I am obsessed with the dry texturizing spray i picked up and am already thinking about going back for a few more of the products Kristen recommended/used. On top of everything - the prices were extremely reasonable - as someone who has been getting their hair cut/colored by some of the best and most frequently recommended salons in NYC for over 15 years, this was hands down the BEST experience I can recall. I was incredibly nervous when I went in to get my dark brown hair colored to an ashy ombré. Haley was so understanding, comforting, & knew exactly what she was doing. This place is a life-saver for the right price in the right place. After attempting myself to bleach and tone my hair to get it to a lighter-without-looking fake blonde and completely failing to do so, a friend referred me to Haley at Little Axe Salon. A legitimate hair goddess and all-around great human being, Haley was able to listen to my dilemma, immediately understand my desires, and fix the problem carefully and quickly without damaging my hair further and without charging me a million dollars to do so! haley ozell is an EPIC, AMAZING color master!! i would and do recommend her to anyone without hesitation (and i've been to my fair share of well-established stylists). she is insanely talented, super sweet, and genuinely accommodating. and, she got her training from some of the best & biggest colorists in the business which i've found actually does make a difference. given the buzz around this place already, i am thrilled that i got in on the fun sooner rather than later. i'm naturally a dark brunette, and haley has transformed my hair to a beautiful, flattering, and natural blonde with depth and brightness. it doesn't look too "perfect" or "done" - it's juuuust right. i feel and look like a true blonde. haley is an artist - she just gets it. i'm amazed by this girl. she listens to everything that i want and makes some wise suggestions of her own, and we figure it out from there. my hair is really long and curly/wavy, and i am extremely picky about who i let near it. it's really important to me that anyone who does has to truly feel the aesthetic - and not just go through a rote process. haley rules. seriously. whatever your color situation (starting from scratch, tweaking what you've already had done, or coming in with a disaster left by someone else), she will make it all good. read more

If there was a 6th star, I'd give it. Kristin is officially the only person in the world I'll let cut my hair. The first time I went to her, I asked her to keep the length and she absolutely did. Today I went to her and needed my dead ends cut off but to still keep it fairly long, and it couldn't have turned out better!
