Had an appointment for two haircuts yesterday morning. These appointments were made two weeks in advanced and were confirmed. I usually go to agatha so ever since my sister and mom have gone to har as well, several times now. But yesterday she seemed to be in a rush. My sister's hair was not cut evenly. The back had a longer piece in the middle hanging out. The layers were not proportional at all. Her right side layers were all choppy and her left side were ok but not as noticeable. This isn't the first time she has cut my sister's hair and she has done a good job previous times. I don't know what happened. For my mom she didn't even want to wash her hair. She wet it with a spray bottle and got to work. I haven't had time to check if it's cut evenly but I will do that tonight after work. I'm sorry but I don't think it's worth $45 anymore. It's a good price but for a not so good job no thank you. Also let me mention the last time I cut my hair I had to go back because I wasn't happy with the cut. My hair just looked so much more puffy. So we had to do some adjustments and do thin sheer cutting to lessen the bulky look. I don't feel like I should have been charged $25 which I was told was the price for just blow dry but when I've done cut and blow before and I've laid $60 even. Ana did a wonderful job with my full highlights. The blonde came out beautiful and she was very meticulous with every highlight. My hair went from long and thin. To a nice medium length blunt cut. Maria's Hair Salon is a busy, local shop that sees a bit of foot traffic. I couldn't find a number for them online, so I went in person to make my appointment for two days later. The staff was friendly and professional. I want to caveat this review by saying I have extremely low expectations for my haircuts and am very easy going about how the individual cuts it. The thing that stopped this from being 5 stars for me, was they washed my hair so quickly and it did not feel very thorough. I'm not too upset about it but I think it was a little off putting to start our session that way. I provided a reference photo, which they didn't reaaally look at, but I still ended up fairly happy with my results. I got a shoulder length cut with some long layers and face framing pieces, so it was pretty basic. The woman that cut my hair did so in like 15 minutes which was crazy. She washed, cut, dried, and styled my hair all in maybe 40? I was so impressed by the speed. I had heard it was pretty cheap previously so I didn't ask for the exact pricing, but before tip it was around $40-45. If you've been in NYC for some time you'll understand how gleeful I left knowing they didn't vacuum my wallet here. I think if you're pickier about your hair or have really high expectations, maybe this won't be the best fit, but I think it's worth a try! read more

I wanted a haircut, wash and blowout for my birthday party later that evening. I made an appointment about a week prior. It was very obvious that they were behind schedule and the stylist who ended up doing my hair was not the person I was scheduled with. The haircut itself was fine but everything else was disappointing. It was clear she was trying to rush through my appointment to get to walk in clients and other appointments who were waiting. Issue #1: They didn't know what my appointment was for. Issue #2: The hair "wash" took like 2 minutes, she basically just slapped shampoo on my head and rinsed it off. Issue #3: I asked for a blowout with LOTS of volume - my hair is flat and falls easily. I said I was going out and wanted the hair to last and showed photos of what I wanted the blowout to look like. She just basically ignored what I said, did a very very basic blow out and then brushed it through and didn't use hair spray. By the end of the appointment I was just frustrated and went home and did it myself, which was my biggest issue: I'm coming here for something I can't do at home, and felt like I was an inconvenience to the staff. I've been so happy with my experience with Agatha that I truly feel so refreshed! My appointment was at 1:30PM and I was sitting in the hair washing seat 5 minutes later. Agatha was super attentive, sweet, and truly meticulous at making sure she was pleased with my hair. She checked in periodically with how I liked the length and if I wanted more feathering angles in the front to frame my face. This place is clean, bright, and busy for a reason! I came in as a walk-in on a Monday around 5:45pm and they were able to take me right away. I told my hair dresser that I wanted a straight cut and showed her some photos as an example. She told me it was not a problem and got started right away. While she was cutting my hair, she stopped to make sure I liked the length throughout the process. Tried giving this salon the benefit of the doubt after not being thrilled the first time. They have so many good reviews so I went back to save $$ and get my bangs and split ends cleaned up... It was like he took a hacksaw to my head with the thinning sheers. When I pointed out the unevenly cut bangs he proceeded to "fix" it by continuing to thin them out and cut them even shorter until I physically pulled my head away because I couldn't believe what was happening. I walked out with uneven bangs on one side of my head and thinned out janky/layered looking bangs in the front. I know people love this place but I paid $75 to completely destroy of my hair. Then had to pay $200 for keratin and a cut to fix it. He did a great job on the blowout though, if that's what you need I'd say go for it. read more

BEWARE!! I've been growing out my hair. I asked them to cut one inch, and they cut 3-4 inches! The hairdresser showed me she was taking off one inch, but then went back when I couldn't see and cut another 2-3 inches. I'm beyond frustrated with the inability to follow basic directions. read more

My first time here. I got a same-day appointment and was seen right away by Teresa. I needed a new style but had no idea what I really wanted. She listened carefully to what I do and do not like and my extremely minimalist styling routine, confirmed the length I wanted, and made a suggestion that sounded sort of okay and turned out amazing! When she was done, I had one small comment, and a few quick snips later my hair was even more amazing. The place is very clean and bright, super friendly, small and no-frills. If you want a trendy salon with a free cappuccino and designer decor, this is not the place. But what I really want from a hair salon is a great cut, not a great coffee. I can get coffee elsewhere. Went here for the first time last Wednesday. I needed my base color corrected , wanted extra hi lights, and a trim. My appointment was with Leo. While waiting, I watched him cut hair and style and I felt more at ease. I showed him what I wanted and he was honest about the upkeep of such light hair, and I knew he was right. So he basically knew what I wanted and adjusted it to make it easier for me to keep up with and not damage my hair in the process! The base color and highlights were perfect and the cut gave my hair so much volume! He is also amazing when it comes to blow drying/styling. Super nice and great conversation too! Great cut and treatment, but I will not be returning... My usual salon was closed today, so I decided to try Maria's, I'd been there before and was happy with the cut I got. So I decided to try a walk-in appointment there. I needed a deep condition/trim, and the male stylist there took me on and washed, conditioned, and trimmed my hair. I was very happy with the service, and my stylist and I were discussing routine and tips for my hair texture. I'm a mixed race woman with 3A/3C curly hair. When I informed him that I sleep with a satin cap at night he exclaimed "That's perfect! Call yourself Shaniqua!" After an awkward silence he told me "Sorry, you know what I mean though." He then proceeds to list off New York fashion trends he hates like "pajamas outside, pacifiers, men with satin caps on", all thinly-veiled "ghetto" and racist stereotypes. This man looked to be roughly in his mid 50s or so, and I was the only non-white person in the room. I was very satisfied with my service, but I would encourage any people (especially women) of color to take their business elsewhere. read more

The price was very fair and it was easy to book an appointment. Salon is no frills. The energy and people that work there seem to be happy and just nice! I overheard another stylist advising a client who didn't seem to know what she wanted but the stylist was SO patient and helped her figure out by showing lots of color swatches, asking questions etc. The stylists seem to really care in a genuine way. Cash only (wish they took cards, yeah) The salon is owned by a cheerful, positive woman who kindly receives you and there is cheerful banter all around while you are there. She cuts hair but I got my hair done by Pablo who is literally one of the best stylists I have ever worked with. Although I hate to write this because Anna was very nice, I am extremely unhappy with the result and feel the need to share my experience. I found Maria's Hair Salon after searching for affordable hair salons near the city, so I gave it a shot after reading good reviews, and the fact that I was able to schedule an appointment on such short notice. When I got there, I presented a picture exactly of what I wanted done with my hair -- a blonde balayage and she said she understood. She obviously did not. I previously had a balayage done in my hair 4 months ago which was grown out at this point, so I just wanted her to touch it up, fix the roots and brighten up the highlights. What I got was 3 platinum blonde, large, chunky streaks near the front of my face, but not even highlighting my face. These streaks also didn't even go near my roots, and already look a bit grown out. Not to mention, this part of my hair is now all dead and pieces have broken off, leaving short dead strands. As for the rest of my hair, COMPLETELY UNEVEN color nowhere near my roots like I had asked. In addition, the color of these "highlights" was basically orange. So now I have my dirty blonde roots, a platinum blonde chunk near the front of my face, and uneven orange highlights throughout the rest of my hair. I now have to pay more than double the price that I originally paid to have this fixed at a different salon. I will not be returning here, and I HIGHLY recommend finding a different salon if you plan to color your hair. read more
