We are mocha connoisseurs and didn't have high expectations. I will happily admit we were very wrong. Les Cheneaux opened their new building, right on the water, in January. It is beautiful; warm, spacious, contemporary and inviting. Plenty of room to sit, relax and gather with friends. And their deck. Wow. Beautiful waterfront views. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Felt right at home. We ordered 16 oz mochas in mugs. They were steamy hot, creamy and beautiful. The taste was rich and smooth without being too sweet; just the way we like them. After viewing another customer's breakfast burrito, we decided to each try them. The food menu is limited to bagels, bagel egg sandwiches and burritos. We had the chorizo egg burrito with potatoes. It was excellent. With a small park next door, a library across the street and plenty of room to stretch your legs and walk along the water's edge, this cafe is a winner. We are already planning a return visit that will include daily visits to Lesl Cheneaux Coffee Roasters. Next trip, we will purchase beans and bring the good flavors home with us.

Because there were so many, I ended up getting a couple of the bakers confused. But regardless, I made an appointment for my fiancé (ATT) and I to head up north for a couple tasting appointments. Again, to my surprise, this location was at the baker's home, which was gorgeous! It sat behind a lake and we entered through the back door that led straight into the kitchen. You could definitely tell that this baker knew what she was doing because everything was laid out beautifully and organized. We had one of the last appointments and thought we would be sitting one-on-one with the baker, but noticed it was more like a tasting buffet, where we got to mix and match different flavor cakes and frostings, which was nice because we could talk about each one in private. There was a couple girls assisting the couples and available for any questions we had and even had several binders full of past wedding/celebration cakes. My personal favorite was the vanilla bean cake but had a hard time choosing a frosting. Personally, the frosting was a bit too sweet for me. We ended up not going with BED for our wedding, but definitely thought the price was similar to the bakers around northern Michigan. I believe there was an minimum of $250 that we had to spend, especially because it was going to be delivered to Castle Farms in Charlevoix, which isn't bad. But we ended up going with a baker in SE Michigan for $150 for the same amount of cake/cupcakes for 50-60 people.

The cake and delivery fee were very reasonable, and the vanilla with vanilla bean frosting cake was so delicious (my mom kept ravings about it days after). The buttercream frosting was exactly to my specification. Highly recommend.

I was afraid the pancakes and french toast would be super sweet, but they weren't. The pancakes were fluffy and not too sweet. The toppings were well incorporated and not over powering. The French toast was perfectly cooked and not too big. The whipped cream was delicious and not overly sweet. I was afraid the coffee would be mediocre, but it was perfect. I wish I lived here so I could try more of the menu! Our server, Audley, was polite, understood the menu, and timely. It was the best breakfast I have ever had, so I wanted to make sure the staff knew what a great time I had. I asked to speak to the manager. Yelp is fine, but I strongly believe in paying compliments directly to those in charge. The manager could not have been less interested in talking to me. A middle aged, medium height, average sized, medium blonde haired woman with large earrings, anxious eyes, and a false smile... she was quick to come over and quick to ignore me. She made minimal eye contact, turned her body away from me, and proceeded to pick up plates before I had finished my sentence. She turned her body away before I was done speaking. As soon as she felt I had spoken long enough, she left. It was a strange experience for an otherwise pleasant meal. If I lived closer, I'd likely choose somewhere else for future breakfasts. When management isn't interested in doing their job, service tends to follow. It's too bad. If only she had managed to stand still, face me, and listen... I might have given this a five star review.
